Hello there, how are you doing? It is Saturday so that is probably good news. I accidentally rejoined the world of work this week so the weekends are precious once again. What are you doing with your weekend? Perhaps you are working, or studying, or spending it in front of the TV. Let us know, particularly if you are watching some kind of sport. We love sports. All of them. Well... most of them, anyways.

So, what has been going on recently? I've been playing around with the iPad quite a lot this week, as Garageband was released, and it's pretty fun. However, Mr C would like me to point out that I started writing this daily on the iPad but gave up and chose a regular computer instead because it's just easier. Sorry mobile fans, it's just the way it is.

Today should be the final day of F1 testing before the 2011 season gets underway. So far it has been quite a mixed week in Barcelona. Red Bull were on top for a couple of days, then Sergio Pérez managed to end on top despite having his fastest lap on a previous day disallowed. Yesterday it was all about Michael Schumacher so who will it be today? Place your bets now.

We published the second part of our Aside with Joe podcast yesterday. The chat with Joe was our first of 2011 and was so long and amazing that we had to split it into two. If you've got an hour or so to fill, then Joe can talk you through all the important news ahead of the season.

It's also worth mentioning HRT, I suppose. Or is it? They launched their 2011 car yesterday, officially, although we had already seen pictures of it. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we're going to see it in real life because it couldn't go testing yesterday due to lack of parts and it can't go testing today because those parts were refused at customs. It seems to me that HRT were more prepared for the upcoming season last year, and despite what Colin Kolles says, they really aren't in control. At least most of the people we love have already escaped from the team.

Speculation began yesterday that with the BBC making cuts left, right and centre, Formula One might be under threat. I don't really know how I feel about it, but it would be a travesty if Wimbledon wasn't on the BBC. It's such a massive part of the year, I can't imagine those two weeks in June without it. What do you think? Does it matter where something is broadcast or will you follow it wherever it goes?

That'll do for me today, I think. Thoughts and love to all in Japan, of course. Have a good weekend, lovely people, and stay in touch.

Christine, thank you for the lovely daily :)

Great Aside with Joe part deux. Points...

    - Jow better have another "Audience with" in Canada! Or Else!

    - Being on the east-coast (Montréal) I don't know any other way than getting up at 07h00 to watch the quali / race. It is fantastic to watch a race and at 10h00 you are done. (not being a baseball/football fan also contributes) On the other hand I can watch ALMS, Rolex Grand-Am, etc. The (local) afternoon races are a nice change, but I honestly don't think I would want to watch a season of them, even though I watch other racing in the afternoon.

    Great 'cast, as usual. Cheers!

I have a very vested interested in that the BBC does seem to offer the best coverage of the F1 races (expect Allen and Legard) and ITV coverage was very poor in that well you would miss the only crash, mistake or pass of the entire race....

About the only other channel that I could pick up F1 racing was on Speed. Okay, I ca see Jack for Jacques, Alex for Alexander, but Tiger ? Nuff' said. Then there was Fox coverage. 8 hour tape delay.

Tennis is not a big deal. Cut the funding for it if you have too. But I have taken a quick glance at teh BBC TV schedules and especially for BBC 3, BBC 4 and BBC HD, what the heck is there left to cut ?

Who was/is Tiger? The only driver I can think of for whom that would make any sense is Tiago Monteiro (Tiago is Portuguese for Tiger), and somehow I don't think you'd have been bothered about the nickname if it was last used 4 years ago...

hmm, $29.95 for all 5. That's not a bad price per game. Maybe I shall wait til more are released :)

  • Amy12/03/2011 at 11:28

In other exciting 'what I've done with my PS3 today' news, Sony have released software for Vaios that enables them to talk to the PS3, so now I can link my laptop to mine, and use the keyboard for typing, or use it as a Remote Play device. My mind has done a Lukeh. Boom.

That isn't bad at all. I played it on the iPad so it was something like 3.99 which is more than acceptable for a bit of Doc action. How far did you get?

I don't think so because the teams have a tight deadline to get stuff to Australia, and the one team that doesn't appear to care (Mercedes) appears to think there's not enough water to excuse Rosberg from running the car...

ohh that is strange. Not sure i have any control of that. I need to sort out my blog in a moment too.

One criticism of Tumblr is it's not that organised.. no tabs or anything that i've found yet *sobs*

However it's very simple to use.. Having an experiment with it and my blog today. Day of rest is quite productive :) Will try update more regularly than i have with my blog, the simple aspect should help i hope.

  • Lukeh12/03/2011 at 16:59

yeah. while Lou's Tumblr is fine, it's a bit boring tbh.

how about something like 'a life in focus' or 'on a roll' (roll of film?) or something'? something catchy to do with your photography and how integrated it is into your life? Just random ideas :)

I don't know much about tumblr, never really known about it but i assume it's like an insta-blog type of thing, an easy way to share photos and like.

when you have so many earthquakes every year you try to build to cope because you know it'll happen again, rather than be shocked when everything falls down repeatedly.

Good point. I've heard that Californian buildings are built to sway in quakes, because they're less likely to fall if they bend a little (I haven't read up on it, but the science sounds solid).

  • Rubbergoat12/03/2011 at 17:16

It's definitely true, we do it in New Zealand too. The earthquake standards for buildings in Wellington are higher than for other cities because they were the city expected to get the next big deadly one.

Yeah emulators can be a burden as much as they can be a blessing I find. Maybe it's just the perfectionist in me who doesn't like the fact emulatso don;t perfectly port the game as they can get a bit buggy though.

  • Leigh O'Gorman12/03/2011 at 21:36

I'm still shocked that IndyCar are pulling streaming. Apparently this will get more people watching it on TV.....

    ...idiots.

  • Alianora La Canta12/03/2011 at 21:38

What do I need to know about today?

The test in Spain (for F1) was pretty much a washout (I joked Paul di Resta would have felt right at home had Force India been testing today).

The test in France (for Le Mans Series) went OK - the new Ferrari 458 was in the upper midfield of its class but it was really cold and a bit damp, which may have affected things.

Apparently there's also a test in the USA (for American Le Mans Series) but I haven't given it much attention.

Italy beat France at Six Nations rugby.

Someone mistook me for a NASCAR expert.

That is insane. They put it on TV and advertisers pay because people watch. Why not stick ads on the stream? It is exactly the same thing except everyone in the world can watch.. Just like f1. Living in the old protectionist world.

I saw that Lewis was 30 seconds off the pace so I figured it was unlikely the McLaren could be that bad.

Wales beat Ireland with a as the result of dodgy refereeing decision and Ireland being stupid in the last minute.

Fair enough. I can't imagine ever getting anything other than free to view tv tbh.

  • Alianora La Canta12/03/2011 at 21:46

    Interesting

It was quite amusing - I was asked what grade of sportscar licence Michael Waltrip would be given, which would have been easier if I'd:

    a) heard of the bloke

    b) heard of the level of NASCAR he was in

    c) known it was even possible to get into Sebring with a new car at this late stage (rumour has it that's what he's doing, and the question was chasing information about it)

  • Steven Roy12/03/2011 at 21:47

Ihavehadthis parked on a tab since someone linked to it a few days ago and only just got round to checking it out. THe first few shots are incredible and the guy in number 24 is barking mad.

I don't think the beeb will drop F1 as it's 6 million viewers worth. I think they are trying to get Bernie to frop the price.

I don't think the beeb will drop F1 as it's 6 million viewers worth. I think they are trying to get Bernie to frop the price.

    That sounds highly likely.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2011 at 21:47

Still brainless. Looks like I'll be picking up an illegal stream - and everyone else - will blog my annoyance later

The TV companies don't seem to understand that their transmission can be re-broadcast.

  • Alison12/03/2011 at 21:48

I don't think the beeb will drop F1 as it's 6 million viewers worth. I think they are trying to get Bernie to frop the price.

If the beeb don't have to bother about adverts, why do viewing figures matter so much?

  • Leigh O'Gorman12/03/2011 at 21:49

If the beeb don't have to bother about adverts, why do viewing figures matter so much?

    justification for the cost

  • Alianora La Canta12/03/2011 at 21:49

If the beeb don't have to bother about adverts, why do viewing figures matter so much?

It helps them justify the licence fee level to the government.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2011 at 21:50

Fair enough. I can't imagine ever getting anything other than free to view tv tbh.

The BBC are just using Bernie's negotiating tactics. No way are they going to give away F1 or Wimbledon or any other major part of their offering. Imagine them trying to negotiate a higher licence fee with their usual line that no-one else can do what they do if they have given away some of the big set piece events. They can shut down BBC3 and BBC4 to save money because all they do is what a hundred other channels do. Stick their content on the iplayer.

  • Alison12/03/2011 at 21:50

    justification for the cost

It's hardly that expensive though... I guess I feel like I get good value from their podcast/radio output, I'm not that bothered about what's on tv.

  • Alianora La Canta12/03/2011 at 21:52

They can shut down BBC3 and BBC4 to save money because all they do is what a hundred other channels do. Stick their content on the iplayer.

Or put it on the near-useless daytime TV slots (which would effectively put them on iPlayer but perhaps raise the viewing figures for the whole day with things that make people happy and/or more knowledgeable.

  • Alianora La Canta12/03/2011 at 21:53

It's hardly that expensive though... I guess I feel like I get good value from their podcast/radio output, I'm not that bothered about what's on tv.

The government thinks it's expensive to an extent that most people don't. Which is a problem because the government are the ones doing the negotiating on our behalf.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2011 at 21:54

    a) heard of the bloke

He is Darrell Waltrip's brother. DW is the guy in the commentary booth who for reasons no-one can possibly understand just as the cars reach the green flag to start the race screams out "Boogity, Boogity, Boogity. Let's go racing"

    b) heard of the level of NASCAR he was in

He has been a top level driver for about 15 years

    c) known it was even possible to get into Sebring with a new car at this late stage (rumour has it that's what he's doing, and the question was chasing information about it)

The race already has a huge grid but I guess in the USA if you want a TV audience you squeeze a Nascar driver in somewhere.

Didn't he do the Daytona 24 hours? So he should already have the appropriate licence

  • Alison12/03/2011 at 21:54

The government thinks it's expensive to an extent that most people don't. Which is a problem because the government are the ones doing the negotiating on our behalf.

It's a bit rich really isn't it.... I pay the government that much tax every week and I'm pretty sure I don't get half as much for it :P

Can you sneak in a plug for Fantasy Racers? We now have the 4th biggest private league with 48 entries and there have not been many in the past couple of days so time to poke people again.

I've heard of Darrell Waltrip before. Had no idea he had any relations, let alone that anyone would assume I'd know them...

The race already has a huge grid but I guess in the USA if you want a TV audience you squeeze a Nascar driver in somewhere.

Something to do with AF Corse having an extra car available for some reason.

Didn't he do the Daytona 24 hours? So he should already have the appropriate licence

He's won it twice. Sadly it's not so simple. Sportscars have four categories of licence - "Platinum", "Gold", "Silver" and "Bronze" - where "Bronze" is anyone with an international B licence who doesn't fit into the (tougher) other three categories. It was clear from the moment I looked up what Michael had done that he not only qualified but was overqualified for "Bronze". The question was which of the other three categories he was in - anything other than "Silver" would have affected the plausibility of one particular variant of the rumour because the GTE-Am category this year only allows one Platinum or Gold driver per line-up and he was supposedly sharing with a Gold-category driver.

I wonder if the FIA were consulted on the invention of this over-complicated licence structure?

In Nascar everyone seems to have relations. Every driver seems to have brothers or father or son or something that races too.

Something to do with AF Corse having an extra car available for some reason.

Who has a spare car at the start of a season? I guess their production people manage to knock out cars faster than they expected.

I wonder if the FIA were consulted on the invention of this over-complicated licence structure?

I think the ACO designed the licence structure and they have always been at least as bad as the FIA

Who has a spare car at the start of a season? I guess their production people manage to knock out cars faster than they expected.

Depending on the rumour, they've either got a spare F430 from last year for GTE-Am or they've somehow grabbed the last 458 off the production line before the race (in which case they'd put it in GTE-Pro, where thankfully nobody cares what metal your licence document is made from).

  • Steven Roy13/03/2011 at 00:07

They are still getting after shocks in Japan. I have never seen anything like this number of quakes in one place. They stay on the map for a week. This map shows 297 quakes in the last week.

In that case, it's an even better idea. Since it's obvious that no outsider's going to win this thing, the best picks are the ones who are totally out of context and whose presence will be appreciated nonetheless.
