Wimbledon took a day off yesterday, allowing F1 the centre stage. It was a cunning strategy by the All England Club - some might point out that it's a traditional break, but I scoff at that - as a Sunday afternoon spent being bored to tears by a procession in Valencia has whetted my appetite all the more for what looks like being a classic day at SW19.

Kicking us off on Centre Court we have round three of Andy Murray vs Richard Gasquet. Gasquet, one of the games more mercurial talents, has perfected the art of losing a two set lead to Murray, having done so famously at the same stage in 2008 and in the first round of last year's French Open. One suspects though, that Murray would prefer not to spend four hours on court this afternoon.

Following that, there is Venus Williams' chance for revenge against Tsvetana Pironkova, who dumped her out of last year's tournament in straight sets. The ladies draw seems to be inexorably creeping towards a fifth All Williams final as Serena faces Marion Bartoli, to whom she has never lost, on Court One. Given Serena's health and injury problems in the last year, it really would just be conformation that they own the women's game at Wimbledon.

Roger Federer should continue his stunning progress through the draw against Mikhail Youzhny. The third seed hasn't even looked like dropping a set yet and completes the day on Court One, presumably after Novak Djokovic has quickly disposed of Michaël Llodra.

Game of the day, however, is the final match on Centre. Rafael Nadal vs. Juan Martín Del Potro. Del Potro, US Open champion in 2009, is a hugely dangerous player to be facing at this stage of the tournament, and is only so low down in the rankings because he spent the best part of 2010 out of the game with a wrist injury. Surely Nadal can't be knocked out at this stage, can he?

Wimbledon Day 7 - Schedule of Play

Centre Court (13:00)

  • Andy Murray (4) vs Richard Gasquet (17)
  • Venus Williams (23) vs Tsvetana Pironkova (32)
  • Rafael Nadal (1) vs Juan Martín Del Potro (24)

Court 1 (13:00)

  • Marion Bartoli (9) vs Serena Williams (7)
  • Michaël Llodra (19) vs Novak Djokovic (2)
  • Mikhail Youzhny (18) vs Roger Federer (3)

Court 2 (12:00)

  • Shuai Peng (20) vs Maria Sharapova (5)
  • Caroline Wozniacki (1) vs Dominika Cibulková (24)
  • Mardy Fish (10) vs Tomáš Berdych (6)
  • Feliciano López/Andrea Petković vs David Marrero/Andrea Hlaváčková (16)

If you're looking for an outside court treat then you could head over to Court 15 in the hope that Bethanie Mattek-Sands lives up to her reputation for her bonkers fashion sense as she teams up with Meghann Shaughnessy in the doubles. Or you could amble over to Court 18 to see 'the next big thing', Bernie Tomic, face off against Xavier Malisse for the right to be battered by Djokovic in the quarter finals, followed by the unstoppable doubles machine that is the Bryan brothers.

All in all, a good day awaits, and the weather is even set to play nice.

    Fabulous post, Simon.

Should be a good day, all of the matches you mentioned feature someone I've heard of which is progress :)

It's super hot today, though. I don't envy them playing tennis in this.

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 10:16

    Goooo Delpo!

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 10:33

They should move Wimbledon up to Edinburgh for the day. Overcast and cool but (hopefully) not going to rain. I'm sure it can't be that big an operation, just stick them all on the train.

As long as you've got a tennis court or two, I can't see a problem with that.

Overcast and rainy here in Dorset. Was mega-hot yesterday though!

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 11:22

Trains aren't running due to the heat

Is there no excuse they won't use to cancel trains?

I am now giving my weather app a stern talking to, by the way. It promised me no rain today, but the big puddles forming in the garden are telling a very different story.

As long as you've got a tennis court or two, I can't see a problem with that.

The Craiglockhart Tennis Centre. Hosted the WTA Doubles World Cup from 1995-1997. And it doesn't get more prestigious than that.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 11:24

Sharapova is struggling already, and we're only two games in.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 11:24

The Craiglockhart Tennis Centre. Hosted the WTA Doubles World Cup from 1995-1997. And it doesn't get more prestigious than that.

    That'll do nicely.

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 11:29

Tomic is 5-0 up on Malisse already. Plenty of support out there for him.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 11:47

Sue Barker talks of Tomic and says: "He started the tournament as the youngest player..."

And then what? Aged at double speed or something?

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 11:50

Something like that. Maybe he'll be 54 by the time the tournament finishes.

Malisse seems to have turned up for the second set. This is tempting me to not bother turning over when Murray and Gasquet begin.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 11:57

Sharapova gets the break. Looking a bit better now.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 12:02

    Wills and Kate.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 12:03

What a wonderful day of tennis we have today. Go Murray and Del Potro! :)

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 12:05

Tomic has taken the second set against Malisse, 7-5. Stepped it up at the perfect time.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 12:06

It must be those extra years of experience he gained.

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 12:08

It must be those extra years of experience he gained.

Exactly the sort of game you would expect from a man of his (very quickly) advancing years.

Lisicki through again. She's on a proper charge.

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 12:31

Tomic about to serve for the match against Malisse. Has just broken to lead 5-4 in the 3rd.

  • Alison27/06/2011 at 12:34

Oh dear. Watching Murray match is making me very tense.

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 12:36

Tomic wins through, outstanding performance. Now time to turn over for some nerve-shredding Murray action.

Set points for Bartoli against Serena. Weird!

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 13:00

Set points for Bartoli against Serena. Weird!

She's doing her stuff to stuff up my assertion that we're heading for more Williams vs Williams.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 13:01

    She did it! Unreal.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 13:01

    Serena lost a set?!

goodness. right i'm gonna need that live scores thing up on my mac, gonna need to keep up with everything! eek for tennis! :)

  • lou27/06/2011 at 13:07

    wohoo! come on Murray!

  • lou27/06/2011 at 13:07

    6-3 hurray!

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 13:08

That was a brilliant point to go 5-3 up.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 13:08

    yaaayy!

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 13:08

Nicely done. Gasquet played largely the better tennis but Murray takes the set, I'm happy with that.

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 13:11

Straight sets would be very nice given the heat, but with Murray I suspect that is too much to ask for.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 13:12

It's the British thing. Remember all the times Henman managed to turn a two set lead into a five set epic.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 13:14

It's the British thing. Remember all the times Henman managed to turn a two set lead into a five set epic.

hehe! only Murray will one day turn a 5 set epic into a grand slam win.. am sure of it :)

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 13:16

It's the British thing. Remember all the times Henman managed to turn a two set lead into a five set epic.

The British thing of not quite being good enough but being ridiculously stubborn about it :)

    yay for Mo! :)

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 13:18

The British thing of not quite being good enough but being ridiculously stubborn about it :)

That's the one. I'd like to be wrong, but I don't think Murray will ever quite have enough to win a slam. The US Open is his best chance.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 13:20

Bartoli and Serena tied at 5-5 in the second set

  • lou27/06/2011 at 13:46

  • lou27/06/2011 at 13:48

    Murray 2-0 up! :)

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 13:48

Bartoli has broken Serena to lead 6-5 in the 2nd.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 13:48

    Wooooo!!

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 13:59

    Tiebreak now.

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 13:59

Surely Serena will go on and win now. Expect Bartoli to crumble.

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 14:04

And another break for Andy. This might actually be a straight sets win.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 14:04

    now 4-2 to Andy :)

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 14:08

Andy has just held serve for a 4-2 lead.

  • Alison27/06/2011 at 14:09

    I hate tiebreaks. They're silly I've decided :P

I just think it's so mad that match point is about 2 points removed from a tie....

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 14:10

    Gazillionth match point for Bartoli.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 14:11

I just think it's so mad that match point is about 2 points removed from a tie....

Same as when football comes down to penalties. You've got to end it somehow.

  • Alison27/06/2011 at 14:11

    Gazillionth match point for Bartoli.

She's gonna get one sooner or later surely.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 14:11

    She did it!

  • Alison27/06/2011 at 14:11

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 14:15

So is it Bartoli vs Lisicki in the quarter final?

I think so. That'll be an interesting one.

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 14:17

    Could be a cracking match.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 14:17

    Wohooooooo!!!!!

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 14:18

Brilliant from Murray. Likely to face Kubot in the quarter final, he's 2-0 up against Lopez (1-1 in the third).

  • lou27/06/2011 at 14:19

Brilliant from Murray. Likely to face Kubot in the quarter final, he's 2-0 up against Lopez (1-1 in the third).

I can deal with that... :)

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 14:20

Right, time for a break. Back for the end of Venus vs Pironkova and then Nadal vs Delpo. See you all in an hour or so.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 14:21

Whoever is commentating on Wozniacki sounds like Ted.

They showed a clip of his interview earlier.

    "Ohhhh, it's a feeling."

    Insightful!

    Tennis day?

    Every day until Sunday :)

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 14:58

I missed all the first matches because my friend came over but now its 1am and she's gone home and I should sleep, but I need a tennis fix :)

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 15:00

Serena is out, Venus has gone down a break. Bad day for the Williamses!

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 15:04

3 set points to Pironkova. Who, incidentally, doesn't look like she's sweating at all.

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 15:11

Looooou my queuing friend the other day had an excellent view of tennis AND photographers! :D

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 15:19

Pironkova breaks in the second set too!

oh wozzy, you'll never get that slam

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 15:39

I really did jinx the Williams sisters today.

I wouldn't say it too loud, they might come after you.

  • Matt G27/06/2011 at 15:40

excellent view of tennis AND photographers!

So good to see some Nikons in there :)

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 15:42

Venus looks like she knows it's over.

  • Mr C27/06/2011 at 15:44

Venus looks like she knows it's over.

yikes. is she wearing that daft dress again?

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 15:45

After last year's defeat, there must be a bit of "what do I have to do to beat her" going thorugh Venus' mind.

  • Mr C27/06/2011 at 15:45

ooh, cheers for the post simon.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 15:45

yikes. is she wearing that daft dress again?

Yea. If it was me, I would have spent yesterday at the shops! :)

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 15:46

yikes. is she wearing that daft dress again?

She is. Not entirely sure what made her look at the net curtains and think "that'd make a good dress for Wimbledon".

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 15:48

Pironkova serving for the match now.

  • Mr C27/06/2011 at 15:48

Not entirely sure what made her look at the net curtains and think "that'd make a good dress for Wimbledon"

she coulda made the effort and designed new tops for each game :)

    Or just say brother!

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 16:03

    Or just say brother!

    that also works :D

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 16:04

    Or just say brother!

Exactly. If you don't know, don't be specific. It's not the most difficult rule of broadcasting to follow.

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 16:08

commentators impressed that William and Kate have stayed all day. I'd do the same :D

That's excellent. And bonus Webber as well.

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 16:37

That's excellent. And bonus Webber as well.

indeed! It's excellent things like this though that make me realise I can unfortunately never get a better job as I really don't want to give up my free tennis :)

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 16:46

    Oooh, time violation for Nadal!

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 16:47

Arguments in Spanish now. Can't tell what's happening.

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 16:47

    Oooh, time violation for Nadal!

    you go carlos!

  • Marti27/06/2011 at 16:48

Arguments in Spanish now. Can't tell what's happening.

If you catch any word, tell me.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 16:49

And now the trainer. Not a happy chappy that Nadal.

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 16:50

And now the trainer. Not a happy chappy that Nadal.

I hate how snarky he gets when he rightfully gets a violation. Suck it up.

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 16:56

as awesome as Mo is, Carlos is possibly the only umpire with a fanclub.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 17:12

    Trainer again!

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:12

    Trainer again!

    suck it upppp.

that may be mean though, my commentators say he's 'in trouble'

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 17:13

Phew, what a day!! Was a bit worried there would be no tennis once I got in as the BBC weathermanwoman said there was a threat of rain tonight but yaaay :)

Also just seen that Murray won, woohoo!!

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:14

    "i think he's done, i think he's cooked"

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 17:14

Who are they talking to now?

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:15

Who are they talking to now?

no idea, perhaps a tournament doctor?

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 17:15

    Oh dear :(

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:15

my commentators are convinced he's retiring from this match. that'd be interesting.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 17:16

He doesn't look positive about it.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 17:16

    oh no at Wozzy! :(

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 17:16

Wow, Venus Williams lost too. Seems quite a bit has happened today.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 17:17

Wow, Venus Williams lost too. Seems quite a bit has happened today.

It has been quite epic today.

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 17:17

Wow, Venus Williams lost too. Seems quite a bit has happened today.

    And Serena too!

My mind needs a lay down.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 17:17

i can't believe i've missed the first bit of his game too.. never fall asleep in the sun!

    I hope rafa is alright!

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:17

    oh no at Wozzy! :(

maybe it's time for her to stop trying to be funny in pressers and start playing tennis :D

  • lou27/06/2011 at 17:17

My mind needs a lay down.

but Andy won and is through ;)

  • lou27/06/2011 at 17:18

I thought Rafa likes to go off court when he gets a medical time out?

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:19

I thought Rafa likes to go off court when he gets a medical time out?

it depends what its for, normally they do that when they need to take their pants off :D

  • Alison27/06/2011 at 17:20

I thought Rafa likes to go off court when he gets a medical time out?

    What's wrong with him :( :( :(

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:20

it depends what its for, normally they do that when they need to take their pants off :D

I really should have said trousers

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:21

  • Alison27/06/2011 at 17:22

    pain in his foot

    Come on Rafa :(

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:24

my commentators have said 'he's gone' at least 20 times in this tie break.

  • Alison27/06/2011 at 17:24

King Rog has just lost first set.

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:25

    bah, stupid tie breaks.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 17:25

my commentators have said 'he's gone' at least 20 times in this tie break.

He's definitely still there. I can see him.

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:25

the scores on http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/scores/index.html are so delayed, bring back slamtracker I say.

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:26

He's definitely still there. I can see him.

and not being hammered in the tie break so far. I think my commentators might cry soon.

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:27

    limping a bit between points

  • lou27/06/2011 at 17:28

I really should have said trousers

  • lou27/06/2011 at 17:29

I kinda want Del Potro to win this..

  • Alison27/06/2011 at 17:29

I kinda want Del Potro to win this..

    Nooooooo!!

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:29

I kinda want Del Potro to win this..

I dooooo, I want him to epically climb up the rankings, which he will anyway since he's defending nothing all year, but still.

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 17:30

Delpo's my favourite player, so obviously want him to win. Come on Delpo.

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 17:31

I kinda want Del Potro to win this..

I like him because he reminds me of De La Rosa

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:31

commies have changed their mind, its ok, he's no longer dying

  • lou27/06/2011 at 17:31

I dooooo, I want him to epically climb up the rankings, which he will anyway since he's defending nothing all year, but still.

:) i only want him to win cause i saw him play at queens and took pics of him. #fickle

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:32

:) i only want him to win cause i saw him play at queens and took pics of him. #fickle

haha yeah, I like it when he does well because it makes Kait happy :)

I also do enjoy a great comeback from injury tale, career best performance at Wimbledon is a much better story than 'oh that guy who won it last year'

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 17:32

Ooh, talking of pictures, anyone up for the post tomorrow?

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 17:33

Ooh, talking of pictures, anyone up for the post tomorrow?

    I'll do it :)

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 17:33

    I'll do it :)

    Ace!

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 17:33

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 17:34

    Ooooh, Delpo :(

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 17:34

Blimey! Rog lost the first set :o

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 17:35

    Where's Nadal gone now?

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 17:35

Berdych 2 sets down to Fish as well. What a ridiculous day of tennis.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 17:35

    He's saying tiempo a ot.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 17:35

    a lot.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 17:36

Nadal does like walking around without a top on doesn't he..

  • Alison27/06/2011 at 17:36

    Where's Nadal gone now?

Trying to drum up a bit of crowd support. There really was no need to come out without a shirt on was there :P

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 17:37

Nadal does like walking around without a top on doesn't he..

    Blatently showing off.

  • Alison27/06/2011 at 17:37

I've been watching King Rog. What is Del Potro angry about?

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:38

I said I was going to go to bed after the first set of both these matches but now I dont want to :(

  • Simon Furnivall27/06/2011 at 17:38

I've been watching King Rog. What is Del Potro angry about?

Nadal's taking roughly three hours to do anything and keep disappearing off court.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 17:38

it's kinda complicated to tell those two a part from that camera angle, they both have a headband on! at least Andy wore a cap today!

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:39

I've been watching King Rog. What is Del Potro angry about?

time between points and the time of the medical time out. He's clearly angry now because when Rafa got a time violation earlier Delpo told Carlos he was wrong to give him one :D

  • Alison27/06/2011 at 17:40

time between points and the time of the medical time out. He's clearly angry now because when Rafa got a time violation earlier Delpo told Carlos he was wrong to give him one :D

Nearly as fickle as us eh.

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:46

I feel Rafas injury made me think this might be interesting to stay up for but theres no sign of it now. Faker. ;)

  • Amy27/06/2011 at 17:53

ah yes time to call it a night I think. See you all for tomorrows action :)

  • lou27/06/2011 at 17:54

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 17:54

ah yes time to call it a night I think. See you all for tomorrows action :)

    Night Amy.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 18:00

wow when Murray misses a shot he looks angry.. when Nadal misses a shot he looks sad.. that slow mo made him look like he was going to cry! :o

  • lou27/06/2011 at 18:01

    come on Delpo!!

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 18:18

3 set points to del potro. Nice.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 18:19

    Wohooo!!!

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 18:24

Nice to see Tsonga is two sets up against Ferrer too.

  • lou27/06/2011 at 18:41

    Delpo! Noo!

  • lou27/06/2011 at 18:49

Oh phew, hes now playing. Looks a bit painful for him tho :( right I must now disappear. Hope he is okay

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 19:42

It seems Mr C is cheering for Delpo simply because "Nadal wins all the time."

Not only am I forcing him to watch, but he has opinions now too!

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 19:59

It's not looking so good for Del Potro right about now.

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 20:00

It's not looking so good for Del Potro right about now.

I liked his bravery just there with the mega shot.

  • Christine27/06/2011 at 20:05

    Awwww.

  • Lukeh27/06/2011 at 20:05

    Aww. Unlucky Del Boy.
