Jo Wilfred Tsonga takes a dive at Queens
Another fantastic day at Wimbledon yesterday saw some great tennis that kept us glued to the streams the entire day. From the first efforts of Venus Williams to overcome Date-Krumm, to the somewhat easy victory of Andy Murray, seeing him through to the third round, there was something on offer for everyone.
There were two great British matches on the ladies side of the draw, with gutsy Heather Watson on excellent form until an elbow injury saw her lose a lead. She managed to draw it out to three sets, but lost it at the final hurdle. Laura Robson, meanwhile, managed to keep her head despite the mounting pressure, and has scraped through into the next round, but will face the might of Sharapova.
So, what is on offer on the courts today? Assuming the weather holds, we might see:
Court | Ladies/Men | Player 1 | vs Player 2 |
---|---|---|---|
Centre | M | Soderling | Hewitt |
L | Na | Lisicki | |
M | Mannarino | Federer | |
No. 1 | M | Anderson | Djokovic |
M | Dimitrov | Tsonga | |
L | Robson | Sharapova | |
No. 2 | L | Halep | S Williams |
M | Rochus | Del Potro | |
M | Ferrer | Harrison | |
L | Wozniacki | Razzano | |
L | Baltacha | Peng |
Unfortunately, the weather forecast suggests that whilst there is sunshine in the morning, the rain will begin at about 1pm, which is exactly the same time as the action is scheduled to start on the show courts. Thankfully, we have the roof on Centre Court, so we will always be able to see some action, but the schedulers may have a headache by the end of the day.
The predictions are that the rain will stop by 7pm, which will leave little time for meaningful play, but we will concentrate on the positives. Federer will be out on Centre Court, and hopefully we'll all be tuned in to watch.
Love the post Christine, I didn't realise the rain was meant to be about for basically all of play tho! Hopefully djokovic will get the chance to complete his match, not having a day off between matches may be interesting for him otherwise.
On the plus side if things continue like this weather wise we'll get play on Sunday too!
I do think it's good that the roof means we're guaranteed some play, but when will the BBC ever be able to play those old repeats they love so much :)
they'll find some time they'll be distraught is they don't :)
LIndsay Davenport looks much prettier than she used to.
Looks nice and sunny out there for now, at least.
Oh dear, tears aren't good.
I don't like this camera angle at all! Zoom out!
woohoo, home in time to not miss much. Most unimpressed Rog is the last match and I probably won't get to see him. Need lots of sleep so I have sharp reflexes for Olympics Ticket Time!
We'll have to do our best commenting, so you can relive it later.
good idea. I may also be able to watch the replay at work but that pesky tv is still behind me :D
I'm impressed that the roof is closed, very forward thinking considering that the outside courts still look bright and sunny.
ooh telly showing highlights of when Hewitt won Wimbledon. He looks so young!
oh Ana, that ball toss. How are you still winning.
Loads of people falling over so far this week.
every time I fall over on slippery grass I ended up doing the splits. I can't normally do them. Ouch.
stop fist pumping, you're playing someone i've never heard of who appears to be absolutely rubbish. you ain't gonna lose.
I wonder if you shouldn't watch something else :)
lleyton hasn't started yet so i'm watching what the telly is showing me :(
this is completely ignoring that theres probably another match on the other channel. I cant find the remotes.
Serena has lost the first set.
I just cut to her opponent lying on the ground
She fell down and hurt her knee a bit. They had to wait a gazillion hours for the trainer, so Serena put her cardigan back on to keep warm. Yay for the cardigan!
She still won the first set though.
I am sad its not for sale on tennis warehouse.
Did I miss the cardigan? :( was making lunch.
Am enjoying the outfits addidas are supplying players with, I like the stripes of green.
oh the fanatics are there. I bet the prim and proper Wimbledon folk hate having them there, especially when there is Royals there!
It's raining very heavily here.. watch out sw19 this may be heading your way!
"Lleyton will know exactly where the Fanatics are"
of course he will, they're the giant group of people wearing yellow.
Halep slips again.
She needs better shoes.
she really does.
Halep is all kinds of failing now.
Serena's shouts are getting louder, am surprised we can't hear her from here
hooray I have found Serena on pay tv. Take that Lleyton.
How can Serena play with massive earings and those very long nails?!
its the big necklaces that scare me, I couldn't imagine running with something going bounce bounce bounce around my neck
I remember when they had that crazy beaded hair, and I wondered how anyone could play without whipping themselves in the eye.
remember when Venus's fell out? Good times.
hehe! It would be so annoying. Serenas earring got caught on her hair earlier when she was about to serve. I can only imagine that would be painful too (not having had my ears pierced)
Djokovic is playing atm too .. Ohh why are all the good matches on at the same time!
I do not, but I have googled it!
Wimbledon has the worst scheduling in the world. You'd think 125 years would be enough practice.
:D I wish my internet was good enough to watch a match there so at least I could watch two..
Serena is killing it now
Blimey, what a waste of match points.
Halep is making a right old racket with each hit of the ball now.
Pun intended.
Thank goodness. If Serena started screeching any louder, I was worried she might explode.
:D
Andrew Castle commentating on Djokovic's match! :)
He looks different with a hat on. Weird.
woah, how did hewitt win the first set.
Bit easy for Djokovic at the moment.
Hewitt playing ninja shots now. Soderling looks rattled.
wohoo Djokovic wins in straight sets
Ninja!
maybe I should switch channels back, I didn't realise Lleyton could do that!
There are two old women in front of Hewitt's fans. They look thoroughly unimpressed.
the Fanatics make me proud to not be Australian. They're awful.
It's safe to say that they're adopting the British "Out of sight, out if mind" approach... their faces are a picture.
It's also nice to see they've let Barry Davies out from captivity to commentate. Knowing his luck Motson will get the final now.
Pat!!
Hi
Sorry, different Pat.
*sobs* Jamie Murray is playing now and the bbc aren't showing it!! :(
*humph*
my friend is now in the queue for tomorrow. Crazy.
That really is crazy!
she's queueing up now... for tomorrow?.. she could just get in for the after 5 slot?.. maybe get a ticket to Fed's match if there are any when they resell them in the grounds?
@Wimbledon A sprinkle of rain here at #Wimbledon. Some players coming off outside courts. No sight of play stopping on centre yet.
er, maybe because the roof is already closed? whoever runs their twitter is an idiot.
shes a rafa fan
ooooohh hehe Del Potro nearly got covered with the court covers hehe!
oh goodness! well she could get in, watch the rafa match have some strawberries and cream maybe some pimms, and then rejoin the queue later? :D i hope she has a tent.
rafas playing tomorrow, hence the queueing now :D
indeed, here she demonstrates the tent http://lockerz.com/s/113359184
is it really that hectic when Rafa's involved. she should have gone to queens, Rafa was signing for ages and chatting to the fans before his warm up (i was watching the jamie ward match so could only watch from afar but he seemed welcoming to fans :)
the queue is hectic every day, people who want centre court start pretty early. She does it every year, all part of the Wimbledon experience apparently :) She goes to Queens too and I believe shes doing the US Open this year.
hehe! at least it's nice and big :)
i could never queue for that long, that could be because i don't like camping tho. ohh yaay for the US open! :)
the year I plan on going to Wimbledon I'm going to join Tennis Australia and get tickets through their ballot. I just don't do tents!
Soderling has called for the trainer due to a blister on his finger apparently.
hehehe! i did Duke of Edinburgh's award and that's enough for me, despite this my uni friends want to get me to go camping. they suggested they all come round to mine and camp in my field.. why they would wanna do that when we have a perfectly warm and comfortable house i'll never know.
aannnd the covers are coming off the courts again, that was a quick delay.
hmm if I was to sleep now I wonder what time a good alarm would be to catch some of Rog.
Could be anything from half an hour to 2 hours for this game to finish. Dunno whether they'd start Fed on another court if Soderling/Hewitt goes on too long?
never!
we've still got Na Li vs Sabine Lisicki after Hewitt it could be hours!
ohh Amy btw i was wondering the other day, the curfew for play on centre is now 11pm right? I can't remember from last year.
I don't think Fed is sacrosanct Amy. Anyways, I'd rather watch Hewitt: those curly locks, all that jumping around...
he's like the one player they haven't put anywhere but Centre at a slam for years and years and years.
Although this is Wimbledon who couldn't schedule if they had a gun to their head :)
I think I'll come back in 3 hours and see whats happening then. Or, my alarm might go off and I might turn it off.
yep, 11pm.
thank you :) mum swore blind it was 9pm yesterday, i can now tell her i was right :)
Whilst everyone is getting a little too excited over ebooks, Hewitt's ninja skills are breaking out again.
Thank goodness Judy is keeping us up to date with Jamie's match
#stupidbbc!
@judmoo
Earache stops play on crt 7. Jamie smacked Stak's head with a 1st serve. Ice therapy? http://yfrog.com/klk0sjj
You can follow it here too: http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/scores/index.html
ah yes i have been, but it doesn't tell me what's happening, only the score. :)
We were all so busy worrying about Isner and Mahut, but this is the match that is going to take forever.
Oops. That's my fault.
I wonder if it is worse to go out in three sets like you weren't good enough, or in five despite battling so hard.
gotta be the latter.
if it's the former you were outclassed, the latter you were so close.
You may be right. You can always get better if you aren't good enough, but if you play five sets, it's probably like: "What else can I doooo?"
Serena thinks she and Venus are picked on because they're always put on Court 2.
i though henman said being on court 1 sucked. no pleasing some people.
Judy explains this tweet:
@judmoo
GSM Murray Stakhovsky. GBH Murray on Stakhovsky. OMG. TFT. http://yfrog.com/kk8loafj
Here:
@judmoo For all u tweeps who didn't understand...GSM - game set match. GBH grievous bodily harm. OMG o my god. TFT. Time for tea. KIR. Keep it real
she is too cool! lol!
Hullooo! Have been watching some of the tennis at a friends. Gooo Li Na.
Some great pictures: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/wimbledon/8593974/Wimbledon-2011-a-selection-of-the-best-pictures-from-the-All-England-Lawn-Tennis-Club.html
Wwwwwhhhaaaatt at Mattek-Sands' coat!
I love the picture of Laura wearing it though :)
Hehehe :D
Not sure autography lady has quite thought through 'the on her arm' idea
I suppose it is one guarantee that they won't be for sale on eBay.
Very true!
oh goodness, mum just came in 'you know federer is playing on court 2' cue mad rush to press red button etc...
me 'mum it's ferrer not federer...'
oh deary me. back to watching Tsonga's epicly long match.
ohhh and it's raining. 3rd time it's rained during this match, but despite the heavy rain they're still playing!
Hehe. Laura Robson must be so sick of waiting by now :)
i feel for Federer, he should be playing by now but we've had 2 very long matches on centre court today.
He better not be, I promised Amy we'd report :)
hehe imagine in Federer played on court 3 and we didn't know! :)
This has also reminded me of the bestest joke ever that Giggles would be proud of
What posh chocolate do tennis players buy?
Federero Rocher
*watches tumbleweed*
Li Na or Na Li seems incapable of winning this match!
wow they really are playing through this rain on court 3... i love it, they've had enough of stopping, stuff the courts they're gonna play :)
I really need to stop turning up at the end of matches.
dad just asked me who was older, Tsonga or Dimitrov.. how am i meant to know?! anyway i did some research and found out Dimitrov is 20. how depressing.
the ball boy slipped! Poor guy
The umpire has decided its too wet for the safety car.
@laurarobson5: My match has just been cancelled! Going to do a bit of gym work then go home and sleep!
oohhh a ball boy falls over.. McEnroe says it's rain is ridiculous.. and play is suspended.
Tsonga may need to wrap this up tomorrow now... light will go and the court may not dry effectively given they've been playing for about 10mins in the wet!
Can't believe they kept on playing. Wimbledon people are usually so strict about their precious grass.
hehe i think they got bored of stopping all the time.. 3 times in one match! how frustrating!
Poor Isner too, who has had his match disturbed a few times too!
Lisicki has two match points now. I think it's because the commentators kept going on about how many people would be watching if Li got in the final.
finally Federer can play! ohh yay for Lisicki too.
That's a lot of tears.
Federer on court now. His jacket looks nice and warm too.
Ooh, Lou, you're writing the Wimbly post for tomorrow right?
ahh i missed them, had to help mum with some of the dinner before the match. :)
yep :)
Marvellous.
Mirka!
Break points for Sir Rog already.
gonna be a quick set, wake up amy or you'll miss Roger!
It's hard to do a report on this when it's just Roger doing what he does :)
:D
Nice to see they're using "Hawkeye" a lot this year. Still waiting for "Radar" "Klinger" & "Hotlips" #wimbledon
- @NeilCole
Gotta love a MASH reference :) :)
oooohhh tsonga is back on court.
impressive stuff from Fed.
roger serving for the match.
The crowd are out of control!
hehehe at that maxican wave!
wohoooooo!!! :D
That was impressive stuff.
Poor umpire at the end just happily waiting for the mexican wave to end :)
1hr 30mins.. not too bad :)
Mo would have giggled..
Is he like, a well known umpire then? I noticed the piccie you took from queens and assumed he was a well known dude :)
he's the most awesome one. if you google Mohamed Lahyani you'll see that many people love him. He can admit when he's wrong, giggle when it's funny and tbh he just appears to absolutely love the game. so lots of people love him :)
Gutted for Isner :(
