The first thing I learned from watching the slopestyle heats is I've been pronouncing Sochi wrong for 7 years.
The yellow dude with the chequered braces looked like a NYC taxi! Military chic now. When did the guys' outfits get more fun than the girls'?

considering its now 5.55am here I think my attempt to move onto Sochi time has been successful.

I can't explain it. I grew up very close to NZ's curling region though so maybe they put something in the water.
There is a lot of it played here and every Olympics/Commonwealth games it gets a lot of coverage but I can't get massively into it. I watch it and enjoy it but once it is gone I don't miss it

The internetz tells me that Great Britain are targeting 1-2 medals in it so you must do alright.
New Zealand has only qualified for Olympic curling once ever and we came dead last but it was aaaaaaawesome.

Scottish teams always do well in world level competitions. There are even a few famous curlers although I the current lot are unknown. So far

I'm horribly late with this response, but I wasn't around during the day, so better late than never. :)
The sport as a whole is called figure skating and has four disciplines: men's single skating, women's single skating, pair skating and ice dancing. The last two look similar at first, but they're actually quite different. Pair skating's main focus lies on acrobatics, which means the pairs jump, the man throws the woman (either away from him or up into the air), and the man lifts the woman above his head. In ice dancing, the main focus lies on dancing, which means there's no jumping, no throwing, and lifts above shoulder-level are not allowed. Ice dance routines also include a lot of classic dance steps (waltz, tango, etc.), which is why you often see ice dancers hold hands like they're ball room dancers.
What you saw today was pair skating.
I hope this helps a bit in case you encounter more figure skating during the Sochi Olympics and get confused by it.

First women's hockey game is on in 4 hours which is the highlight of my day.
The British guy is leading the semis and he didn't snowboard until he was 17. Maybe it's not too late for me to go to he Olympics.
The Russian guy who had his mobile number on his helmet during the qualifiers has taped over them for the semis. But he got lots of messages from ladies so I'm sure he's happy :)

watching the skiiers do this looks way more scary because they ski backwards a lot which looks terrifying. i guess its impossible to snowboard backwards.

I love it when the skiers go inverted and spin with theirs skis crossed up - looks like a helicopter.
I think all the types of skiing look more scary, cos those sticks on their feet look like they could really do some damage!
i dont understand how it's ever possible to crash on skis and NOT break your leg in multiple places
i am not going to pretend i know whats going on, blokes sliding down a hill, doing some crazy flips and twists it all looks the same to me, but its good to watch something different. not sure about sports that really on judges but just like the diving ill look for no splash and by the end i might be able to work out who looked better than the rest.
they were talking during the semis about the judges being really harsh, but i dont mind that as long as they're equally harsh to everyone.
thats it, consistency is all you need in these events.
Commentator says: "It all comes down to this guy, he's running better than everyone else. Except in that first run." So not really better then.

they've changed the format of the women's ice hockey this time around after the USA and Canada outscored their opponents in the prelim rounds 72-3 in 2010.
It's probably too early to say it's worked but the 3-0 scoreline in USA v Finland with 10 minutes to play looks good.

This cross country skiing is weird cos they're all going on the same tracks, like trains.
geez already sick of our coverage this year. last winter olympics we had 8 or 10 channels showing pretty much everything in full, this year all we have is one dodgy free to air channel showing a non stop production of the same ads over and over again. seriously commercial tv has no idea how to cover sport properly,already grumpy with this coverage.
theres two channels, one of which is 24/7, and 6 online streams. this is the greatest free to air coverage of a winter olympics ever.

Navigating a hairpin on skis doesn't look easy.

The way they glide along it doesn't look like they're putting in any effort at all. Clearly they are.
sometimes when i show up early to my hockey games the short track speed skaters are still practising on the rink. its crazy how much they get coached for something that looks effortless

Arnold Schwarznegger did an AMA recently on reddit and he mentioned that for The Sixth Day there was a stunt he had to do where when they practised it several times with goggles it never was a problem. When they went to film that scene the goggles didn't do what they were supposed to do and it all became very dangerous until a stuntman director pulled Arnie old.

I've seen a lot of cycle helmets crack into pieces like that, it's quite normal after a big hit. They're designed to do that I thought? Not sure if a snow helmet would be the same.
They are essentially the same constructions, with a shell over the top with protects the core from minor knocks and general minor wear and tear.
I do like snowboarding clothes. It would be weird to get some and just sit at my desk though.
Maybe if you sat there with a snowboard strapped to your feet it would look less weird

I struggle with ice hockey cos the puck is so small and fast that I can't keep up with it, so it just looks like a lot of people bashing into each other!
They say it keeps the game more competitive between countries because if Canadian women were allowed to check they'd win by more than they already do since they generally grow up playing with the boys

Indian Olympic Committee were thrown out for dodgy dealings or something, so he is competing under the Olympic Flag. Happens when an athlete does not have a recognised Olympic organisation to compete for eg South Sudan for London 2012.

Ski jumping is like motor racing. You need to qualify for hills in order of size. You start off on a tiny little jump and go up in steps until you get qualified for the crazy big hill
but its literally not an option at the moment

The bit I don't get is how can they stand up. That has to be a physical impossibility. Their skis are on a slippy surface that is practical vertical. If they stand up and put weight on their skis the skis should slide from under them.

I think the ski jump shoul just be about distance. All the other stuff is like the rules the FIA put in so that they can fiddle things
I'm not sure why they do it at all... Is it a safety thing? To encourage people not to take crazy risks trying to jump too far?
I think it is because it is massively affected by wind and that there is a limit to how far they can safely jump. If someone jumps beyond a certain distance they move the seat they start from down a step for the following jumpers. It can be moved a few times during a competition.
They have to make sure that they land while they are still on the down slope because landing on the flat or on an upslope will hurt badly

yeah its get the stones as close to the middle, if you have the closest 2 or 3 stones you get two or three points. there are ten ends.

I haven't been skiing in years but the last time I went was the first time I saw moguls. It was like a revelation that this was why skis had been invented. I am not a great skier so I was going through them very slowly but they were still great fun. It would probably take me 5 minutes to get down that hill

I was just listening to the commentator tell you about how most of the athletes shouldn't be jumping because of knee injury but decided to anyways because it was an historic occasion.
It just seems like every other person he's talking about recovering from knee surgery!
Apart from the impact youcan imagine the effecct on the knee when they lose control of their skis and they twist. Especially on landing.

the czech team has one nhl goalie and they didnt dress him for this game.
he's generally considered to be a terrible nhl goalie but surely he would have been a better choice than these two non nhl guys.
I couldn't tell you anything about him other than his name. I have a feeling he is a goalie but I am not sure

I find the concept of positions in hockey odd because they seem to swap so offten
it looks like that but once you learn what players play what positions you do notice where they tend to be found on the ice.
Jagr was drafted in 1990 which is only beaten in ridiculousness by Teemu Selanne who was drafted in 1988 and is about to play in his 6th Olympics. Six. That's mental.

people would say that about the hockey too but it really is a different game. the womens game allows you to see more puckhandling because they can't be as fast and they're not allowed to be as physical, but the fast and physical is generally better to watch.

A friend and myself used to play the old NHL games on the PS2 like, 10 years ago and it'd crack us up that the goalkeepers would sometimes just wander out of their goal and around the rink sometimes when there were calls leaving us without a goalie sometimes. Good times.

when the other team takes a penalty so you are up a man, thats when you are on the power play. The other team are then said to be on the penalty kill.

THere is long track and short track but I have no idea what the distance is.
This is long track - 400m lap. I think the long track races are between 500m and 10k. I think all time trial. The 'races' are on the short track.
Tennis alert. Murray is playing someone called Vasselin on Sky Sports 3.
I thought they only had two people in separate lanes doing time trial on the long track and proper races on the short track but I wasn't sure.

THey put pine needles in the landing area so the competitors can see exactly where the ground is. Same reason they spray water across the surface of the pool in diving.

i think what benefited me was being the exact right age for the rollerblade boom of the early 90s so the first time i ice skated it was super easy.
my brother was rubbish at it because the rollerblade boom didn't extend to boys, at least in new zealand anyway.

I was a slightly better ice skater than a roller skater, but that's not saying much, completely hopeless on wheels, terrible on a skateboard too, haven't done any of them in a long time.
i always thought my height was the only thing between me and pro tennis but after learning lauren davis is the exact same height as me i think the only thing between me and pro tennis is the fact i had no lessons until i was 26.
i was terrible on roller skates but fine on inline skates. odd how the position of the wheels makes so much difference.
saw davis play this year. she does that bounce the ball behind your back between your legs thing when she serves. she is tiny too.
I only tried roller skates once. We were on holiday when I was really young and it was the old skates with a wheel in each corner. That day I understood how bambi felt about ice. I simply couldn't stand on them let alone move. They must be the only things with wheels I couldn't cope with
i like her because she has the exact same stumpy legs i do too. hate that ball bounce thing though, hate it on isner, hate it on her.
I tried on a pair of inline skates once, stood up, sat back down, then took them off, could see there was to be a lot of damage to my limbs in a short time.

I must say that I really don't like the on-site "flower ceremony" followed by the Sochi-Olympic-Park official medal ceremony. I think that it is not fair to the athletes, having to wait and not getting the full experience at their venue; nor to the spectators who have bought tickets and gone to the venue.
Or conversely, given that they are set on doing the medals back at the Park, at least the competitors get a ceremony with the fans soon after the end of their event(success).
It is a bit weird. Although a lot of championships etc don't have the ceremony straight after the event - especially if it's late at night. But if they're having a flower ceremony, I don't see why they can't just get their medals too.
Remember the weeping rowers - that wouldn't have been nearly as good if they'd been in tracksuits the next day.
it looks like their idea all along to commute back to the stadium... but I agree that it might be best to do medals while everyone is still in situ.
I can see the argument for Championships themselves, but for individual events? F1 has the podiums after every race. They give the Stanley Cup at the end of the last game, same for the NFL, NBA, MLB. IPL cricket tropies are handed out at the end of the match.

Local news is reporting much dissatisfaction with the cross-country skiing results, both for Canada and for other teams. Canada's Alex Harvey actually withdrew from his race yesterday (a 10K?) saying that he was loosing speed and distance on the downhills. The results of today's women's 4X 10K (I think) was also declared to be unexpected.
Reports indicated special preparations of the snow to help it cope with the warm weather. Reports saying that there was "fertilizer" used, surely to raise the melting temperature.

They should do them in the order of least insane to most insane. That way you would see bobsleigh and think it was crazy then the luge and think that is the craziest thing ever then the skeleton which is the craziest thing ever

Yes, it was pretty bad. However, once a team presents in the starting block there is a 1 minute count-down timer that is started. The team must get to a point (something like) 15 feet down the track (i.e. committed to a run) otherwise they are disqualified.

in december the canucks commentator started talking about a shutout with 35 seconds left. He apologised straight away and said people could slap him if anything happened, and then they got scored on with 7 seconds to go.
The very next game when they were also about to get one he said nothing and as soon as the whistle blew he started yelling SHUTOUT SHUTOUT SHUTOUT SHUTOUT. it was glorious :D

the IIHF considered the Czech team the continuation of the old team so Slovakia kind of got the shaft so I am always cheering for them to do well. I feel this could be an issue for the GB curling team in the future ;)
Plus Slovakia's last Olympic captain died in the Lokomotiv Air Disaster and that makes me sad so I want them to do well for him.

I think the marking is pretty random. Like the commentators are fairly expert and they are quite bad at deciding what the score is going to be.

Each skater gets SO long on the ice. I also think each event has several different skates that are added together to get the overall score.
The curling I think is hilarious. They spend weeks all playing each other in every combination and then at the end they nearly had a 6 way tie, which would have made all the first matches pointless...

they have 4 lines of 3 forwards and 3 pairs of d men, then one spare forward, one spare d and two goalies.
NHL teams are only allowed to dress 20, they don't carry the spare F+D

you get guys who only play less than 10 minutes of the 60 so some might say you could do away with them. we only roll 3 lines of fowards in the AIHL and I think it makes a difference.

My brain does that on its own. I don't have blurry vision at all.
It just really did NOT like both eyes being in focus at once.
That's what happened with my driving glasses. The brain compensated for the left eye blur. It was only one day I closed my right eye for some reason and realised I could really see any more.

they picked guys most qualified at reffing big games. swedish players are ok with it because they know them from the nhl. swedish media are not ok with it.
