The remaining two participants in Group A get together to fight for points as joint-hosts Poland take on group leaders Russia. Their last game saw Russia score just the four goals, whilst Poland secured a one goal apiece draw. Poland have the added issue of their favoured goalkeeper being banned, so a deputy will have to stand in. The pair have met in three friendlies in recent years, and taken one win each. I assume the other one was a draw. However, Russia are unbeaten in their last 15 matches. And did I mention they won the last one 4-1? A tough opponent.
Poland vs Russia (Group A)
Published by Christine Blachford on
Did someone mention the Warsaw Pact?
Just watching the news. Polish and Russian 'fans' fighting each other and the police. I thought we'd moved on from this. The stadium had better be secure.
It was all very bad scheduling to have the 2 playing on a holiday that was to do with their history. The police probably would've done a better job if they had started by controlling the streets.
not hanging about!
Another great match for the commentator!
oh wait, watching a replay, carry on.
*oops*
watching on mute, what they say>
This is what happens when you try and multitask!
i... just... can't...
The un-pronouncable names.
I can't wait!
hehe, rather them than me.
They would've been doing well to have scored ~10 mins before kickoff
wouldn't stop schumacher.
Roy Keane tells us that there are tree-lads up front. Didn't realise they were playing Ents.
The game of consonants?
Another team with a stripe.
So... How long until the first red card?
Player / manager / fan ?
Any of the above.
25 mins
i'll go for 9 minutes.
Nine minutes, or minus nine minutes?
ooooooh ouch
:)
Blaszcisszkowski is my favourite.
Good luck saying the Polish no.16
tell me you copied that from somewhere..
It's not right. Close.
I'm gonna go for 30 mins. Although I don't think it'll be as bad as the Battle of Bramell Lane in the card stakes...
Bla zsis kow ski?
That's what I'd go for.
He has played as part of my FIFA team *lets slips a little more about me*
..kov ski, apparently
Blajjakovski. Sorted. :)
The ref is German. That seems sensible ¬.¬
Next!
Neither team will like him
They say "that was a great save" but I'm looking at it and wondering if he did it on purpose or was just lucky. Leg in the right place at the right time.
Ryan would say he fell there intentionally
Heheh, I don't want to cast aspersions on goalies, they're ace. But also sometimes just standing in the right spot :)
You do seem to have to be quite lucky :)
I'm saying red card won't happen until 2nd half
i may have been a bit harsh...
Hey all.
For those interested, I'm hearing that 'Arry may have left Tottenham.
hey chap
He's bleeding a lot.
Evening
Hey Mr. C. We are hiring a new Director fore Technology and Media. I bet you would be totally interested, right. ;)
so long as it doesn't require multitasking. ...apparently.
GOAL
made it look easy!
Off sides
or not
Yeeah that was off
shame
I wasn't in the room!
Good job i'm not running the line then
Wonder what that guy was yelling.
Does this confirm our earlier thoughts ... ?
Good spot by the linesman. I wouldn't have spotted that
That man is accident prone.
Ok I swear our commentator said that one of the Polish players last name was German for "stupid."
4 mins till 'my' sending off.
that went begging - somebody hit it
Looks pretty balanced between the sides.
My limited German says no.
I'm sure I didn't hear the whole story.
Oops - turns out they've been good boys so far
They all seem to be apologising to each other all the time!
GOAL (for sure this time)
really sure? ;)
I don't believe it. They put the 1 up last time and it went away again.
heck of a run to get on the end of that.
Where was the defending on that free-kick. There were 3 guys who could've headed that in
Shouldered that in.
So does Poland have any chance of going through if they lose this game?
I know, I know, the thing with Russia is they always try to shoulder it in.
If Lukeh was here, he would be proud of me.
:) :)
You ask complicated questions!
By the way, if you thought commentary was fun, live text is hilarious: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18138408
Yes. They play the Czechs in the final match and a win should do it (assuming Greece don't beat Russia - hahahahaha)
They would have to beat the Czechs on Saturday and I think a draw might be enough too, on goal difference is it? Russia will surely beat Greece to win the group.
I had to refer to this to see the tables and matches http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/european-championship/2012/groups-schedule
It updates the tables live!
They need a win Cze have 3pts and Pol 1 at the end of this.
It requires math!
I think you'll find that it requires maths.
They must have buttons to press to get the names to show up!
I see underneath it says it comes from the Press Association, it was more fun when the Beeb did their own.
Ah yes
I'm going to record a comment for SPC and say "jag-waar."
:)
I can handle that so long as you don't talk about it being made using aluminum ;)
gonna wear out that 'paste' button.
Football strip! Oh no, we did that one.
The first post I wrote for SPC I put alternate spellings in words like color(colour), but Christine edited them out.
:)
Which did she leave in?
I don't remember.
Here let me see if I can pull it up on my cell phone. :p
How do they make flags so big!?
Oh no, did I? Bad Christine.
Seems 'Arry's not gone after all - but that statement sounds like the one someone puts out before next week leaving. It did seem a little strange tbh - that's rumours for you.
Where would he go to? RG reckons it might be better for spurs if he did...
Apparently it was a(nother) disagreement about Modric, but I can see no reason why he'd go - he'll not get a better job without showing more results.
Is that the same guy again??
Evening all
Must be goal time
:)
ooh nice
WTF!! How do you do that?!
Wow
STEVEN
Too easy
Steven is from the future.
I swear you must be watching the source feed a few seconds ahead
heheheeh
It's Bajjikovski!
Oh, now he is saying Bashakovski.
It is Scottish TV rather than English ITV
Last night I turned up around now and goals started happening too
he's like michael owen, when owen was young and could still run.
And wasn't always injured and played more than one game in 20 etc etc
In the Bundesliga he has Kuba on his shirt
exactly. just like him.
Great goal!
Wait, are you from the future too?
So what's the 'Arry story then?
All of sidepodcast is.
If this result stays, then 'all' Poland have to do is beat the Czechs to qualify.
There is no story. The internet lit up with rumours he'd walked because of a disagreement regarding Modric. He's come out and with a strong statement, denied it.
Thanks
I maybe bought into the intrigue of it all.
I have polish colleagues. They are lovely people, but they have ridiculously complicated names!
Whew there
Save!
No, I'm a bit behind!
Man so close!
Russia play like a slow motion second rate version of Barcelona
Game has really opened up now
How can it not be a free kick when he dived on top of him?
That cross demanded a bicycle
They haven't shown a replay here either.
YOu just gave me an idea for a tshirt.
Poland had a shot straight after it so they forgot about that incident
Every time Arshavin gets the ball a Pole gets it next
Someone needs to tell him he doesn't play for arsenal anymore!
The Poles need to stop letting Russia get back - when they're breaking find the final pass!
Imagine being a Polish kid starting school and having to learn how to write your name
I'm not sure who I want to win. I have good friends from both countries!
The tournament keeps more magic to have the host still in ...
imagine getting a shirt with these name on it. letters will cost more than the material.
There have been remarkably few fouls in the games I have seen
:)
Poland. Russia will go through anyway and if the Poles win this it makes Saturday's game more fun.
Indeed. I have a colleague whose name is pronounced Jens-Ray. It's spelt Jedrzej!
'Aww what?'
Their last name might as well be Koenigsegg.
And yet the Russian goal scorers first name is Alan!
Whenever they mention Polanski, I get interested that the controversial film-director has changed career.
The Ghost Writer is a very good film btw.
Shame Kuba was floored - that was a nice move
Arshavin gave it away again
@MrC - Just thought - that the next round of matches will be interesting - having them both at the same time - how is that going to work? 1 thread or 2?
Oh no, multitasking.
christine has already figured it out (but i forget what she decided...)
NOOO!
new drinking game
Time for a Poland goal I think
I mostly just figured that you would be bound to comment in the wrong thread, so one thread would be more friendly.
You would never see the end of the game
your faith in me never ceases to astound ;)
Looks like nominating a team to score was a step too far
Shame - I'd just decided to have both matches on my LT (in top L and R corners), with the corresponding thread below each (bottom L and R corners).
That is a great idea!
I can be persuaded, but multi-tasking is a significant issue round these parts :)
I was even surprised when you had a thread per game in the group stages...
Me too!
I just got a email from Codemasters to beta test the F1 game!
how are we gonna watch both anyhow? i'll comment on what's on the telly, i promise not to screw it up (this time).
To be fair, if they're all together, then talking about who does/not qualify does need to be cut/pasted/etc - you know what i mean
Watching two games is OK. The problem is listening to a different commentary in each ear
*boom*
Especially with your ears
#truestory
The one coming off looks like he's going to stab someone
Why do they all keep on making changes with no time left?
Even more confusingly, Saturday's games coincide with Le Mans and the last half of the Milwaukee IndyCar
2 games & 2 races !!
Look how many police are behind the Russian goal!
A result must still be a great result for the Polish
we're gonna need a bigger server.
To waste time and break up the flow of the game. When the current score suits a team they will make pointless substitutions just to kill the opposition's momentum
I had no idea there was another Indycar race this weekend
By the way there is MotoGP on Sunday too, during Le Mans
The other thing they will do is tell the player who is coming off to go for a walk to the furthest away part of the pitch so he can waste more time with the long walk off
Sport just needs to stop for a minute, I can't keep up!
POL v CZE is their final match. Poles qualify if they win, Czechs otherwise. (Unless the Greeks beat Russia by a few)
But that won't happen so no need considering
Stranger things have happened!
Late addition a couple of months ago I think. Michael Andretti is the promoter now. If this doesn't get people in the door we'll lose the Mile forever. No pressure.
Crafty :)
I am starting to think maybe you had the right idea when you were only interested in F1. But you can't turn the clock back that far
Good job there's not a 3-week-long F1-tournament
I need to find a way to lever it in to my viewing somewhere
Would be pretty cool to have live racing after work every day for 3 weeks.
second goal was a blinder. hadn't seen from that angle.
I am going to disappear to finish writing the LM stuff and if time, stuff for my site too. Cheers for the threads, company etc. :)
See you for Denmark v Portugal hopefully. May have to disappear for a while tomorrow evening but I hope I won't miss much.
cheers for the comments all. catch you tomorrow for more.
Despite LM stuff tomorrow, I for some reason really want to watch NED v GER too
I'm looking forward to that one. Lots of outdoor screens here, so I might go out for that one.
That could be a great game and so could Denmark - Portugal
Can't promise I'll be back in time for the beginning of DENvPOR, but I'll defo make it before too long - see if it's my turn to bring a goal
