We’re passing the halfway post and soon enough playoff ambitions will be realised or those dreams will be shattered. This week’s action begins with the Bengals, class of a mediocre AFC North, taking on the middle-of-the-road Dolphins on TNF – Cincinnati play Miami (01:25 Fri – Sky Sports). On Sunday the Saints who are second across the NFC travel up to the New York Jets (18:00 Sun – Sky Sports). Next up the Philadelphia Eagles take their QB issues way out West to take on one of next year’s home teams at Wembley, the Oakland Raiders (21:25 Sun – Sky Sports). Then the Indianapolis Colts will try to put distance between them and the rest of the AFC Southwhen they play the ailing Houston Texans (01:30 Mon – C4). Then on Monday Night, some say that this is the oldest rivalry in the NFL; the Chicago Bears are at the Green Bay Packers (01:40 Tues – Eurosport). NB: we’re back to regular times this week, folks.
NFL Week 9
Published by Will Davies on
Evening NFL-ers.
Some good games up in the first slot today, I've got the Chargers-'Skins and (probably) the Jets-Saints.
hey chap. have the NYJ game on here, a least for a bit.
Yey, company. The Jets have played well on odd-numbered weeks.
Oooo Jets pick off Drew Brees.
Kai will be pleased - she's started the Jets' D in our sidepod-FL league.
righto! struggling to tell these two teams apart!
Colour-wise or quality of play? ;)
what they're wearing. might need more contrast on the telly. they both look green :)
I'm watching on 1/4 of a LT screen, and definitely agree - that gold, and that green of the field, with the Jets green also, are all rather similar to me
Wow - the Bills' undrafted rookie QB just smoked the unbeaten Chiefs' D with a HUGE pass over the top.
Chargers have punted and given the 'Skins a start on their 1 yard line - teehee.
San Diego intercept RG3 in his own end zone for a TD.
oooh that was borderline.
Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham hooking up again(!)
wow nice run.
Saints D looking mortal
TD!
Refs in Washington just called pass interference, despite there being ZERO contact - glasses much?
Jimmy Graham again - do the Saints know how to score any other way?!
can they call for a review?
heh. i guess the how doesn't matter so much.
Erm, dunno, you must be able to review PI. The Chargers didn't, and have converted to the next set of downs regardless.
He's supposed to have a bum-foot
doesn't look like it from here :)
just realised the race in a fortnight clashes with the sunday night games. can't double-up on our sky sub.
That sounds awkward
The Chargers just threw a screen pass and sent a 300+ lb, 7+ foot Lineman to bulldoze some blocks - for the TD.
There are enough games on during the week that I guess i will miss some of the Sunday matches
Sounds like Perry on steroids
Ahh nm - it will just make that afternoon/ evening very sporty :)
yeah, but i've been using our 24hr sky pass to watch f1 and nfl. so £9.99 for two sports, in a fortnight it'll be £9.99 for one.
You must still be able to see some NFL
by the time we finish f1 stuff, the late C4 game will be on :)
They need to start the race 2 hours earlier or 2 hours later
Wait, that'll be like Monday.
race doesn't finish until 9pm(ish). can't complain though, i hate early starts more :)
blimey, how many camera angles do they have of one replay? it's like he's in the matrix.
another td for the nyj's.
Jets play well in odd weeks :)
That just has to make a coach really happy
At least they are consistent in their inconsistency.
:)
Bugging Mr C with NFL questions today. Flashbacks of when we first started watching F1, I bet.
nah. back then i knew some answers :)
Are you asking why the ball is a funny shape?
Ask them here if he runs out of answers, we might be able to help...
No, I did that one a few weeks back :)
"why do they start at the other end instead of the middle"
*shrugsies*
Bad couple of seconds for QBs on the highlight reel. Ponder gets sacke in the endzone then KC intercept a pass in their endzone and run it all the way back
Why does who start at the other end of what?
The green peoples got a touchdown wotsit. Then I couldn't figure out what happened next. My natural instinct is they should all hustle down the middle and start again. But instead they went all the way to the other end, which seems like the team that didn't get the touchdown have a lot more work to do.
They start where-ever the other team has kicked the ball (off) to.
It is one of the oddities of this version of football. In any other version except Aussie Rules the team that loses the goal/try/whatever gets to kick off. In NFL the team that scores kicks off from their own 35 yard line and generally they thump the ball as far as they can to give the other team more work to do. Last week one team even kicked the ball through the goal posts
Mr C has the video
After a TD that team gets to try to add an extra point with a Field Goal.
They then kick the ball off to the white/gold team to run back as far as they can.
When that play ends the white/golds get to play 'normally'.
I think it's confusing me because I thought they were kicking it back into their own goal, but apparently they walk up the other end in between, but we didn't see that.
Mr C says he's never seen it but he knows it happens.
Suspicious.
I think you should keep asking him questions to see how much he really knows
Yup - they walk from the end they've just scored in to their end and kick off from back there.
considering the length of time i've been watching. veeeeeery little.
I wonder if you're not secretly watching something else. Like peeps that have a comic inside War and Peace.
this is the kind of sport that cannot be rushed! sure, walk the whole length of the pitch, kick the ball right back again.
They could just hand it over, really.
it would save HOURS.
But then there would be no kick off returns, which often provide the explosive 100 yard TDs. #seriousanswer
This one is only 90 yards but he was a rookie and it was the superbowl
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVT91mNMS8A
"brought to you in high definition tupper-vision"
wut.
A Vikings' rookie (one of the purple teams) did something around 100 just last week (or 2).
Ooh, that is good. Each week I learn a little bit more, and this week I think more than ever!
But I'm still off to do something else.
Enjoy :)
Have fun doing something else
Don't work too hard ;)
Brees intercepted
Holding penalty against the Jets. Cancel the interception
Nice break by the CB to get in front of the receiver and tip the ball - shame for the Jets.
Brees flattened but no interceprion
Brees sacked. His QB rating is 40 points worse when he plays on the road
Sacked again
Kai has the JetsD in the sidepod-FL league.
Good choice by her. They have been so close to sacking Brees on half a dozen occasions since I tuned in.
Saints got the field goal
From 55 yards
I thought it was abad pick up, but it turns out to have been inspired.
She knows her NY teams.
KC defence gets another TD
Ridiculous - they're outscoring their offence.
Jets are ripping through the Saints defence
'Skins make it a 2 score game with 7 to play
Menelik Watson from Manchester is making his first ever NFL start for the Raiders tonight. I don't think he has to worry about the big kids beating him up as he is 6 foot 5 and 315 pounds
Chargers Fumble, it's under review, but looks cast iron from here.
Brees flattened again. Ref calls it roughing the passer but I call it a tackle
The shoulder hit him on the thigh
The tackler had made the dive before the throw - poor call
I appreciate the vote of confidence. I really didn't know how it would work out. Nothing can make up for Peyton's bye week, though.
Quarterbacks are like goalkeepers. Ludicrously over protected
I lost more than half my team and only remembered 20 minutes before the Thursday game kicked off
not a fumble after all
Adrian Peterson goes 11 yards for a TD to give the Vikings the lead against Dallas
It'll be a mixed up week for sure. That's good.
Panthers D gets a touchdown. Seems to be a good night for defencemen to pick up a TD
ha! Wow. Jets D! Who knew? not me.
Chargers TD - 3pt game, 4m remsining
They have to get a TD tonight.
I am sure you knew Brees's QB rating is 40 points worse on the road
oh, er, yeah, of course, everyone knows that!
;)
I knew you would know that
I played Adrian Peterson this week, too. Yay him.
Surely AP starts every week?
I was playing with my lineup and I thought he was one I was switching back and forth.
But Andy Dalton is my QB and 6.72 points is not good. :(
KC D got me 22 points so far. I forgot I picked them and they have scored 2 TDs so far
He had a great weekend last weekend, so I went with him and not Kaep. Boo.
Great!
Dalts has 3 good games, then a ;poor one - sorry.
Brees is my wildcard though
Kaep is off this week
aha. Good reason I couldn't play him. :)
Chargers have the ball, and 2 minutes on the clock.
Saints offence finally woke up. Making serious progress on this drive
I've had Peyton all season. I can't complain. :)
He is your ticket to the playoffs.
Me too. I went with Russell Wilson this week
He's been my ticket to everything. Lucky.
Who's he with? How'd he do?
Seahawks. Has been great in all the clips I have seen all season. They are 7-1. They play in a later game
TB @ SEA
Seattle will destroy the Buccs
I hope he does well for you.
That is my plan. I also have Kellen Davis at tight end
Thanks. I had never thought much about him until I saw a bit of one of his games a couple of weeks ago and he was outstanding. He is another from the same year as Luck, RGIII etc
Chargers inside the 1.
Good catch, but oh well.
haha. The ball hit the Jet in the leg, looked like!
Brees has jet leg.
Brees almost through another interception. Hit the Jets player on the hand with the ball
Almost another interception
4th and 19
Half sacked half incomplete shovel pass
O.M.G. terrible for the Saints.
Your D is loving this!
Now the commentators are saying they need to keep an eye on the Jets D. I guess you got there just before they got a big rep
Chargers FG to tie it up... Headed for free Football in Washington
yeah! :) I'm really surprised.
Why are the jets running plays. Just take a knee they kick a field goal and get a 9 point lead
Saints have timeouts, so Jets need another set of downs?
27 seconds left. Take the field goal and the 9 point lead rather than risk losing the ball
Saints coach looks like Capt Ahab.
Chargers and Redskins are in OT?
tied at 24
Yerp. 'Skins with the ball.
:)
The Jets D must look like a whale coming at Brees
:D
We are now at the Eagles - Raiders game
I'm waiting for Steelers/Patriots in 15 mins but have the OT Chargers/Skins in the meantime.
That my choice for a next game
You cannot challenge or review a penalty once the crew have made their decision.
Is the NE game a TV game?
The TV games are the ones I listed at the top... I can't remember which atm.
Eagles @ Raiders is the Sky game.
Ah, it seems not, which means I can watch. Excellent. Currently watching Rivers lose in OT.
Ahh, penalties are non reviewable, but calls are?
Might need to clarify what you mean by a call, but that's certainly always been my understanding. Movement of chains, catches, drops, fumbles, possession, all that can be challenged, but flappy hands, holds, etc... nope. Ref decides, and that's that as far as I know.
That was kinda what I meaning :) Cheers, I'd never worked out exactly what was challengeable.
Eagles get a TD 7-0
Chargers can't stop the 'Skins' drive, TD and the win.
I'd look it up in my NFL rule book, if I could find it.
Raiders go from their own 20 to the Eagles 15 in one play. All but 10 yards was after the catch
Raiders throw the ball away on 3rd and goal
7-3
Madden at the Raiders game
How are the Raiders this year?
First time I have seen them but they are 3 and 4 so not good. They play in the next Wembley game so I guess that is why we have that game tonight and not because they are a must see team
I see.
Steelers and Pats still 0-0 with 8mins left in the 1st
Clipping penalty on the Pats.
Strong pressure on Brady in blitz. He throws it away.
Pats ompletion to Gronk for 30? yards
*completion
Eagles get another TD. Abysmal coverage from Oakland. Changed days
TD Gronk - nope - close. Now offsides penalty. They only have inches to go.
I've got Pats & Steelers on the radio.
oh good.
They were saying Gronk looks better than last week. I haven't followed the whole saga about his arm closely, but I'm glad he's back.
Totally missed this story
Gronkowski on the Pats broke his forearm and there have been multiple surgeries. I'll see if I can find a synopsis. He's such an intense player, it was a huge loss to the Pats.
He is one of those players who always seems to deliver
Pats are stopped short of TD! WOW! Pitt takes over at the 1 yd line.
Oh balls, I'm not there yet. I always forget Gamepass is behind.
Pryor about to be sacked for the loss of about 10 yards so unloaded the ball and got a penalty and loss of down. Take the sack in future
oops. Sorry.
Turnover on downs, maybe the Pats' O aren't fully back, just yet.
Steelers intercepted.
Pats take over at the 34. AND TD!!!
I knew only good things could happen with Big Ben on the galf-yard line :-)
*half
Pats TD?
Ah, seen it now.
yep.
Amendola on the first reception after the turnover.
Think I might check out of the comments - need to keep the suspense for my Pats games :-)
TD Eagles despite the receiver almost being tripped before he caught the ball
21-3
Don't know who the Raiders play at Wembley but I am betting whoever they are they will win
yeah, I've been trying to wait a bit before posting...
haha
Steven - scroll down to the 2012 season section.
Gronkowski -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Gronkowski#cite_note-24
I had no idea that he was so young. He seems to have been around for years
I had the same reaction. He's only 24 and he's been through so much in his career already.
Freaky pic of Alonso after his 28G adventure over the kerbs. Just RT'd it from ESPN and another guy.
PS - yey for the Pats' D!
Pryor ran from half way to the 9 yard line. Not bad for a QB and the Raiders get a TD on the next play
I saw that picture go through my timeline earlier and didn't realise it was him
I had to triple-take.
Raiders crowd finally getting involved in the game. Didn't help because Eagles converted 3rd and 16
Sorry, Buccs up 3!! scores?!
Eagles over 300 yards of offence and just scored yet another TD
I guess Wilson is not going to get me as many points as I had hoped for
Looks like two passing TDs to Wright and Underwood. The third TD must have been by the D as it is not listed in the offence stats
Pats stopped Pitt on 4th down. They take over at the 35 or so.
Both Steelers and Pats defenses looking pretty good.
Gronk TD for Pats.
Who needs two good arms?
and a good back?
So he had herniated disc back surgery, broken forearm surgery, then he broke it again and had another surgery on it, then 3 more for infections in his arm.
I do love how there's a target for Gostkowski to aim for on the XP
Terry Blount from ESPN is worth a follow for the Seahawks game. It sounds utterly bizarre.
Pats 14
Steelers 0
10:30 left in the 2nd.
That game is running late. 1:06 left at Oakland
It was a 9:25, not a 9:00. That's why. the later games always have a split kickoff.
Arrington just got burned.
I see what you mean
Terry Blount @TerryBlountESPN
After two timeouts, Seattle can't stop Tampa from running for the first down. And now a fight.
Have you seen Tampa's third TD?
Not yet
It's worth a look, fits the crazy nature of the game.
Raiders have 77 yards ruching and only 12 yards of that is not by the QB
Raiders setting up for a 53 yard field goal with 8 seconds left in the half
ooh.
Made it. 28-13
Wow!
Gronk has 119 yards and Bolden rushing for 12.5 yards/carry at the moment
Back in 15 minutes
Steelers 10
Pats 17
1:55 to go in the 2nd
ALO got the all clear. That's good.
I already knew that. Should have said
I missed a minute and a half of the third and by the time I got back the Eagles got another TD
Another Eagles TD
Flag on the play
End of first half
Steelers 10
Pats 24
Defence holding. TD stands. 50 yard pass
Eagles 42 Raiders 13
Foles 331 yards passing, 6TD passes, 0 interceptions.
man oh man.
QB rating 143. Would be better but has only completed 13/22. 13 completed passes and 6 of them for TDs
Don't see the Eagles rshing Michael Vick back any time soon
Yikes, that's a terrible D.
My numbers are wrong. I read Pryor's pass attempt/complete numbers. Foles' are 19/24 and his real QB rating is 158
OMG
Foles threw from his own 25 to McCoy on the Raiders 15. That is just the throw. No running
Eagles get another TD. 7 TDs all passes
That breaks a record, if I recall a tweet correctly.
49-13
Wembley management must be gutted they got the Raiders now
That is the actual throw. The snap was around the 30 and McCoy ran a couple of yards on the end.
He equalled the record for throwing 7 TD passes but there is still a third of the game left
SI NFL @si_nfl 21m
Nick Foles has thrown six TD passes, one away from the NFL record.
21 mins ago, so that latest one would be breaking it.
aha
7 is already the record held by a few people. Peyton did it earlier this season
God @TheTweetOfGod
I almost never interfere in athletic events, but I had Nick Foles in My fantasy league and I was sick of losing.
haha
Better Foles than Dalton today!
Foles now has 400 yards passing
You have to feel sorry for Pryor. He as 250 yards passing and 87 yards rushing
QB's trying to play the game by himself?
Eagles intercept Pryor although the ball hit both hands of the receiver
Other than him they have 12 yards rushing
oh god. Pathetic.
Eagles go 3 and out. How did that happen
Seattle intercepted on the goalline.
Steelers TD
Anyone would think they don't care about my fantasy team
selfish
they should know what to do for you. Did they miss the meeting?
Gronk limping. What no one wants to see.
after being tackled down low.
The more injuries he gets the better he plays
Clean hit by Ryan Clark into his right thigh. Looked like knee got a jolt.
I wonder how many G's his knee took.
Steelers and Pats tied at 24 w 5:38 to go in the 3rd.
Must take a lot
Gronk back out in
Foles sacked on the first play of the drive
Amendola (Pats) having a great game with another great catch.
Brady sacked.
Foles had to throw it away on third down after holding the ball for about 10 seconds. I guess it is not so bad to struggle for open receivers when you already have 7 TD passes. This is only his 9th ever start
FG Pats
27 -24
!!!!
Job security.
It *is* the Raiders!
The Patriots' opponents never learn - Gostkowski kicks high, aiming for the edge of the endzone, inviting teams to return - and they always bite. They never realise because he's kicked it so high, they'll not get so far.
Eagles intercept Pryor
They must have heard of hang time
Seahawks now level with Tampa 24-24
Foles out of the game and Barkley in to get some playing time
Have Pats and Seattle side-by-side now.
Julian Edelman gets it done, every week. Great punt returner.
Now the Raiders have their back up QB on because they are checking Pryor's knee in the locker room. Probably the strain from carrying the team
Pryor had 382 yards total offence and 13 points to show for it
OT in Seattle, and Pats lead by 10 at home.
Raiders had 4th and goal and McGloin had to throw the ball away
2 minute warning in Oakland
Raiders get a second TD
Gronk looking strong with that reception. He's so talented.
Raiders onside kick recovered by the Eagles.
29 points down with 51 seconds remaining. Surely an onside kick is massively optimistic in those circumstances
:)
GAME OVER
Eagles 49 Raiders 20
FG Seattle, TD Pats
Pats score again 41-24 now w 9:16 in the 4th.
I'm going to get ready for tomorrow, guys. Have a good night and thanks for the company.
Thanks for the thread, Will and Mr. C.
Good night
Good night. Have a good day tomorrow
Just checked back with the game quickly - 55 for the Pats??!
#nothere
Looks like they will win then
#nothere either

This game is crazy! RT @gerrydulac: 55 points by Patriots most ever allowed by #Steelers in franchise history.
Cute little Polamalu looked sad. :(
Poor Troy.
His curls were even droopy.
But he also looked kinda mad and disgusted, so that should fuel practice this week. He can use this for motivation.
I feel sorry for whoever his direct opponent is next week
Ok, I'm going again. Good night. :)
I'm not sure I believe you this time
I might not believe you, either. ;)
This is getting complicated
Honestly going. Good night. Have a good Monday.
