Divisional rivalries are out in force for week two, with matchups from the AFC East, NFC North, NFC West and AFC North. The TNF game pits New York Jets’ rookie QB Geno Smith against New England Patriots’ sure-fire HoF QB Tom Brady (0125 Fri – Sky Sports). On SNF, the smash-mouth Minnesota Vikings take on the multi faceted Chicago Bears (1800 Sun – Sky Sports). Next up our only non-divisional game, but that doesn’t make it any less special; it’s the Manning-bowl. Peyton’s fast starting Denver Broncos are hosted by brother Eli’s New York Giants (2125 Sun – Sky Sports). The late game sees favourites to become Champions, when the San Francisco 49ers face the Seattle Seahawks (01:30 Mon – Channel 4). The Monday night game is a hard fought rivalry, as the aging and regressing Pittsburgh Steelers play the young and talented Cincinnati Bengals (12:10 Tues – Eurosport). Difficult to say which game is more of a must-watch than any of the others... so just watch them all!
NFL Week 2
Published by Will Davies on
Really thought I was going to make the TNF game this week, but it turns out sleep is a much more valuable commodity. #nothere
I've watched every drop-back from the game over my lunch Summary as follows:
Geno Smith: played well, until the first interception, then went downhill
Brady: lots of overthrown passes
NE receivers: quite a few drops, seemed to be behind on running routs
Ridley: didn't fumble; nearly did
NE defence: pretty good, but Arrington the star man again. Made a play on first INT.
Overall: New England not looking great, Jets looking worse than Bills, but Geno Smith coped well generally. Needs better protection though.
I ended up watching the last quarter, as I was properly awake at that point, and I was very glad I'd not made a point of being up for the whole thing.
I think the weather played a big part in making the game so scrappy, but that's the last time I start any Pats in Fantasy for a good few weeks.
Gonna be on Redzone tonight, I think. Picked the Raiders in my survivor league so hoping for a big showing there.
The first game today is the Vikings at the Bears in two and a half hours.
Thus evening I'm going to start by doubling up on Vikes-Bears & Bolts-Birds.
I'm starting with Redskins - Packers. Perhaps we can cover the lot between us? Could double-up with Dophins-Colts.
so long as you make sure thst luck, wayne and hartline have good games
I'll be around the grounds with Redzone.
Who has Amendola btw? Sounds like he could be out until the bye week.
dunno, someone unlucky
nahh, i have too many rbs ;)
Not sure which game I'll watch later, not wild about any of them to be honest.
I have four in my starting lineup. Oop.
me2, plus a t leaqst 2 more on my bench
I'll be watching the Manning Bowl.
Redzone goes live. Let's football!
Flacco plays even though his wife gave birth an hour ago. That's either one very giving or one very ******* off wife.
robert has dannyA
Kick off in Vhicago
And in Philly and Baltimore.
Normally it is Devon Hester who returns the kick off 105 yards for a TD. Must be odd for the Bears to be on the other side
Outstanding, just seen that on redzone. 105 yards!
Nearly a TD for Texans. Inches to go.
Hester only got 80 yards
eagles go 3 and out
Not sure. Was a pass.
That could have been the weirdest start to a game ever if both teams had returned the kick offs
Unfortunately not him. I have him in another league.
Vinatieri FG miss from 52. Left upright.
Bears TD Forte to Benett
Cutler not Forte
Packers TD ruled out - Cobb went out of bounds.
12:12 to go in the first quarter and it is already 7-7
Rivers is outplaying Vick so far
Rogers sacked on two consecutive & goal plays. Ouch.
Chicago Bears doing the haka??
TD Falcons, Jackson.
boom! got him in the sfl.
Jamaal Charles TD for KC.
eagles with huge yards afterthe catch - mccoy
soz, updating server stuff today (non race weekend etc). commenting may be bumpy until i've finished.
Charles Tillman just picked up a female pitch side reporter and spun her round just as she was about to get squished by a vehicle
Been fine so far
cool. what were you testing then? assumed i'd died.
No problem :-) And we're always happy to test anyway!
not noticed anything
it'd died, the server, not me. i didn't die.
huh! carry on then :) :)
Is the server as dead as Ringo?
Lacy is out with a concussion :(
Both my games are in ads at the moment
Some Colts guy is floored... Donald Thomas
Knee. Looks like he's not getting up.
Oh, and Miami lead 7-0. Completely missed it.
which two are you watching?
Charles Tillman is getting his knee treated on the sideline. The injury was not due to the pitchside reporter being too heavy
Dolphins - Colts and Redskins - Packers.
It was a ten yard pass for the TD
Colts in the redzone
where are you watching those? i have bears/vikings?
Me too. The next game we have is the Manning Bowl
Mayhem after the Packers punt. They think they have the ball
They won't get it
ah-ha, just found mia/ind on sky go extra. didn't even know we had that.
okay, i'll watch that one then. 1 sec.
Indy FG is GOOD
teehee, Rivers running 10+ for the first... like a baby goat
And I'm at ads again. Maybe I need to go four-up. Always feels a bit greedy though. And a little harder to follow.
You missed a great start to the Bears-Vikings game.
Bears kicked off and the Vikings ran the ball straight back 105 yards for a touchdown. Then the Vikings kiced off and the Bears ran it back 80-ish yards and looked like they would get the touchdown too
have the same game as steven on, will comment between server work :)
i've bears - vikes as well
RGIII almost picked off.
i love multi-game watching between everyone :D
Bears recover the ball but they had 13 players on the field. You would think players at that level would know to get off fast
Packers will start their next series from around the Washington 40.
Me too. These are my eighth and ninth full games so far this season :-)
i'm yet to do a full one, just a lot of titbits
Miami just burned the Colts on two successive plays
bears sack Ponder just as he pulled his arm back to pass
14-3 Miami. AFC East could be quite tasty after all this season!
Rodgers needs better protection, making some bad decisions.
amazing sideline catch by thr chargers! challenge thrown out
Packers TD on a 4th & 3.
they were out of FG range.
10-0 Packers now.
after 1, eagles look relatively ordinary
Plenty of big passing plays around the league so far
20-ish yard run followed by a 35 yard pass
Another one from Washington - Garcon for 41 on 1st down.
Bears took 3 plays to go from their own 10 to the TD
Luck stripped, recovered by his lineman.
Clay Matthews just sent RGIII's helmet for a walk.
Anyone would think he didn't like QBs
both my games are now end of 1st; Mami 14-3 up, Green Bay 10-0 up.
and I'm back. Who missed me/what did I miss?
Vikes 7 Bears 14 at end of the 1st too
chargers 10-3 eagles at 14:00 in thr 2nd
Vick just dropped the ball... but it bubbled out of bounds.
Colts TD; Redskins player down and out in that game. All go
Miami 14 Colts 10
Merriweather the Redskins guy down, having taken Lacy out earlier...
Sky box bugged so lost Redzone - on Vikes/Bears now.
Packers in the redzone
it's coming back - holding
That was beyond silly
Vikings punted and as the ball was about to go into the end zone one of their players flicked it out. It was then touched by a Chicago player making it a live ball so one of the Vikings picked it up and took it in for a TD.
Officials decided that it was a touch back though so no score
Chargers are out-Eaglesing the Eagles, going no huddle but running the playclock to 1 every time
TD Pack. This one stands.
Packers 17-0; TDs for Cobb and Nelson, Rodgers 200 yards.
Merriweather out for the game. Gave two concussions in his time on the field - one to himself.
Brandon Meriweather announced as having a concussion, out for the game.
td eagles, cooper on thr catch
Great catch by Bennett but just beyond the endzone. Looks like he landed awkwardly on a soundman or photographer and is getting treatment
but is the camera okay...
Cutler sacked and dropped the ball. TD Viikngs after a 61 yard return
need a replay of that.
Once the pick all the bits out of his back we will see
Cutler should never have lost that ball. He was tackled round the waist from his left and was carrying the ball in his right hand
Eagles calling the Ozzy Osborne D - they're using photos
Hester returns the kick off to the Minn 25
TD Pack. Getting dull now.
i'm facing Rodgers somewhere... it's going b adly
Interception in the endzone for the Vikings. Unbelievable.
From the Vikes 1 yard line Cultler has a pass batted up in the air and after a few hands got a touch it was interceped.
Yep. Bears decided to throw it on 1st & 1 after running it all drive, batted up in the air and caught by a Vikes d-man.
you're a bit ahead of us, that was unreal.
If you throw a pass with that kind of pack in between you and the receiver floating the pass is a bad idea. There needs to be height to get into the back field
This may be the first time I've ever seen any NFL really. I can't ever see where the ball is.
Just realised I have Aaron Rodgers in another league. BOOM.
It always goes back to the guy in the middle of the play first, then he'll either throw it or hand it off to someone else to run it. Keep an eye on that guy for where the ball goes - PICK SIX BEARS!
You could not make this up.
Chicago intercept and return it for a TD.
you picked a good first game.
then the Manning bowl!! Great 2nd game
It's all about badgers and mascara.
I totlally lostrack of the score. By some miracle the Bears are leading 21-14
RGIII sacked. Redskins nowhere.
Redskins going for it on 4th & 5.
Sort of have to at this point, don't they?
That smells of desperation
Yep, 24-0 down and playing like it.
Chargers fumble in ther redzone again
two minute warning at Lambeau.
Colts TD. They lead.
Vikings scored a TD but we saw nothing because the feed died
XP GOOD. Colts 17 Miami 14.
Ponder got the ball from the shotgun and passed 20 yards deep right to Rudolph
21-21 with 1:11 left in the half
Touchback in GB. Fumbled it into the pylon. Muppet.
Chargers 13-10 at the half, having left 14 points inside the 10yard line.
Rodgers has 335 first half yards.
That explains why the opposition is going for it on 4th and 5
Miami kicking for 17-17 at HT. 54 yard attempt or so.
Kick is good, but the Colts have iced him.
He's looking nervous - take 2.
He smacked it straight down the middle. Kept his nerve well.
Falcons are beating the Rams 24-3 but have only one rushing yard
Chargers WR down for a while...
Missed the Bears scoring a field goal to take a 24-21 lead at half time
Malcom Floyd was sandwiched between 2 defenders, he's been moving on the field, but it's probably just very precautionary.
Kick off in Chicago
Hester only managed to get to the Chicago 20
Redskins FG NO GOOD. Nowhere near.
Great scramble from Ponder on 4th & 1 to make a first.
This is a crazy game. Vikings go for 4th and 1 despite only being 3 points down with 11 minutes of the 4rd quarter to go. They make that and the officials are checking to see if they turned the ball over on the next play
Miami challenging Colts catch on the 1. They win.
Colts TD coming back, GB PAT GOOD
Colts FG good, they lead 20-17; GB 31-0 up against Crock.
Redskins just ran for 33 yards. Maybe they'll finally score.
Update: Chargers 20-10 Phily
They have 20 minutes left and they are only 31-0 down
Redskins in redzone.
Let me know how it goes... I feel I have interest in the whole of their offence at times.
Redskins will surely challenge ruling of balls out on 1.
Eagles tie it up with a huge TD
Redskins challenge. Looks at TD to me.
This game got even nuttier
Vikings drive goes 55 yards then on 3rd and 6th Ponder passes to Carlson who fumbles it and it is recovered by the Bears in their own end zone.
Typing too fast.
3rd and 6 from the Bears 10.
Play under review
Are you sure?
Receiver never had possession so it was a fumble.
4th and 6 from the 10
First TD of the day for the Rams
End of the third quarter in Chicago
Hey, Miami scored a TD while I was examining electricity prices with a toothcomb. 24-20 they lead.
Cutler intercepted on a wildly optimistic pass. Tried to throw it 30 yards down field and out to the touchline despite there being two defenders on the receiver
Chain gang in Indy have broken their equipment.
Ponder runs it on 3rd and 2. Dives in head first with the ball in both hands in front of him.
Looked like he failed to get first down but the officials gave it
Chicago challenging the position of the ball
4th and inches and the Vikings make it
Chargers 23-20, with 10:37 left in the 4th.
Phily TD now up to 26 to 23 - 7:06 to play
Chargers cough it up on a ko return, only to recover the fumble. *and breathe*
Forte of the Bears rushing the ball had it ripped out of hands. There was no real tackle. The ball was just ripped away
I missed a Vikings field goal. The lead 27-24
Redskins scored again. Have 14 now.
Redskins leading 14-7 since HT.
Old style game of 2 halfs
1st and goal Vikings
TD Chargers to take the lead... Eagles' D are letting their O down.
Redskins in the redzone. No idea how. Rather distracted right now.
Good defence by the Bears means the Vikings have to kick a field goal. 30-24 Minnesota with 3:15 left on the clock
Nooooo... hearing of an Andy Luck INT.
Luck threw an INT, 20 seconds after I switched audio to Lambeau
Cutler threw a pass that went straight to the Umpire's ear
Hester with 249 ko return yards for the Bears on the day!
Redskins win the challenge. Refs feeling sorry for them, I think.
Yet another pass with not enough height on it. Bad enough when the D line can get a hand to it but when the umpire's ear gets in the way then the ball is way too low
2 minute warning in Chicago
RG3 just threw a third TD
Boom, thanks :)
Vick is on the sidelines, Foles is in the game... and needs to come through if the Eagles want a W.
Redskins missed what I guess was a 2PC/
Vick is back in after the 2MW
Phily FG to tie it at 30. Chargers have 1:50 to win it.
Bears lead by 1 with 10 seconds to go
Another Vikes KO return to seal it? Or will Ponder be asked to throw a Hail Mary?
Bears recover the kick off by ripping the ball from the returner
RGIII has rushed 4 times for 1 yard today
GB win 38-20
Chargers trying the FG from ~30... or it's BONUS FOOTBALL in Phily.
Ruling stands. Surely even in this game the Bears can't screw it up.
Cutler takes a knee. Game over. Bears win 31-30. I would hate to be trying to do a highlights or summing up of that game with everything that happened
BOLTS FG (7s left)
I have Arizona-Detroit on now too
Miami win, 24-20.
Dolphins must be confident now.
Saints-Bucs has been suspended (weather).
San Diego and Phillidelphia both have over 500 yards of offence
Mannings doing the coint toss
Akers missed a FG. Twice. But that's because I have the game on twice on my screen.
Roughing penalty. Akers re-took. He missed again. Missed one wide left, one wide right.
Time to retire, perhaps?
Peyton finding open recievers on every play
Eli throwing an absolute BOMB
Broncos go 60 yards on their first drive and Peyton hands off to be run in for the TD and the ball carrier spills it in the end zone.
Eli's first pass goes 60 yards straight up the middle to Victor Cruz
First OMAHA OMAHA I have heard from Eli this season
what are you watching?
for the first time tonight, I'm watching one game. The screen seems massive.
For some reason I'm noticing how shiny and new their uniforms and helmets look. Maybe it's the allergy medicine I took. The mold count is really high right now and I am suffering. :((
I have Texans OT on. They have 2nd down inside the 5.
Texans TD given. Titans offside declined. BUT I want to see review. May have been OOB.
It's a touchdown. Texans will win.
I think you need a sidepodhug
yes, I do. Many thanks. They help the most. :)
I've gone back in time. NFL Redzone is stuck in last week.
Do the OMs help?
it loaded last week's. Fixed now, but it's the Jaguars game. Will switch over to Saints-Bucs.
oh yes! Good reminder.
Oh, of course, Saints and Bucs are currently hiding inside.
Should have said the helmets do look particularly shiny
Feely FG GOOD, Arizona 3-0 up vs Detroit.
Looks like we have gone from a game with points every few minutes to one with the defences on top after the first drive by each team
I thought I may be hallucinating just a little.
It's easy to check. Hol your hand out. If it is shiny you either have skin or eye problems
We may have another safety...
Detroit kick returner couldn't decide what to do, may have grazed the line
He should have been in the Vikings - Bears game
Not ruled a safety, not challenged.
I'm ok. Not shiny.
Nice coverage on that play.
The pass had a tiny window too, nicely done. Detroit 7-3 up.
That has to be good
Great job by Peyton not to get sacked
Nice drive by the Broncos, good TD run.
Wait, it was Ellington.
The Broncos are building a really good team round Peyton
They look good.
Their offence is scary this year.
I heart Cruz.
Even though he was kinda sorta out of bounds for a sec. ;)
i neeed a quiet game from him please
Eli seems to have a lot more shouting to do than most QBs. I think that is why he is constantly shouting OMAHA OMAHA. They need to find a way to get him to say less
I forgot about my fantasy teams. I need a blowout because I have both Mannings.
Saints-Bucs to restart in 10 mins
I may have a slight problem with the blow out as I also have the Broncos D. I have Victor Cruz too. This fantasy thing is complicated
I thought they had given up on that game. Didn't realise that they were going to re-start it
i have peyton as my bonus
I have Peyton as my QB and Eli as the wild card
I just can't take that name seriously. I remember when Megatron was an F1 engine
Oh, that's a bell ringer hit.
Robots in disguise ;)
I thought that was a TD. Missed the ball being stripped
Makes me think of transformers.
About half way down the page it explains that BMW engines for customer teams were re-badged as Megatron
nonono cruz thnks
Another Giants field goal
i don't rate eli in the redzone, so have the NYG kicker in 2 leagues
Wow. I have Wilson on my team. So happy about that.
Giants lead 9-7
i'm rather behind then
That is why I love watching Peyton. Sets, reads the defence then changes everything in about 5 seconds
Brees TD. Bucs coverage busted, had no idea what they were doing. Should've taken a TO.
Broncos get a field goal after the receiver dropped the ball in the previous play
Broncos 10 - Giants 9
INT by Broncos in endzone
Eli throws an interception. Looks like the QB and the receiver were on different pages
Feely FG GOOD. 14-13 Detroit.
I think he said Eli got hit, too? not sure.
Wait, who threw the interception? Eli INT?
Probably did but it looked like Eli expected the receiver to turn out at the end of the run and the receiver thought he should turn in
Eli threw it
Pick 6 - Detroit reutn INT for TD, 66 yards.
Detroit lead 21-13
Eli sacked on the first play of the second half. Started on hiss own 26 and lost about 10 yards
3 and out without the Giants ever catching a pass
Feely FG good. 21-16
I thought Decker was going in on that one, but he met a sea of blue.
Now TD Broncos
Me too but next play TD Broncos
Every Welker TD is a dagger to my heart
Something to watch out for
Michael Carlson retweeted
Chase Stuart @fbgchase
When Patrick Peterson gets an INT this season, he'll be first player since '61 with to complete, catch, and intercept a pass in same year.
I see Julio Jones had a good game - 24.20 points.
He appeared a lot on the highlights
The Denver D seem to be trying to set a record for penalties
Late flag on the play
Pass int on D
Another penalty against Denver for pass interference. Looke perfectly good to me
Phil Simms thinks it's a bad call.
That's who we have commentating
Another penalty against Denver
I'm off - must sleep
Sky studio saying people used to say Jacobs looked like Tarzan but ran like Jane
That looked like it belonged in the Bears Vikings game. Both teams lost possession in the pne play
That is the second time Peyton has escaped a sack to make a pass
Giants looking pretty mediocre in this game.
..as they turn it over?
Looks like another turnover
At first I thought the ball hit him on the helmet
hit him on the heel. Wow.
It takes amazing awareness to be a QB. Apart from having to memorise the playbook you have to make sure all your players are in the right place and read the defence. Then you have to watch the clock and call a time out a second before you run out of time.
I think Peyton could get a job doing that
Coughlin not at all happy with that decision
It is incredible.
I was making lunch for tomorrow. How did it get to be 31 for the Broncos? That was quick.
81 yard TD on the return.
I have no idea. I saw all the scores but the total surprised me. Oh look there is another 6 points
3 TD's by Denver in 5 mins.
"maybe" a backbreaker for the Giants? They've seem flat footed all day.
The Giants look like they need a couple of class players added to their roster to make some big plays and lift them
That was an amazing return. He went through a bunch of 5 Giants at one point
Thrilling to watch.
Jim Gaffigan @JimGaffigan
"I don't like this movie." - my 4 year old daughter watching Giants-Broncos game.
Should have shown her the Bears-Vikings game. It was like a badly written movie
Eli doing the only thing he can do at this stage of the game and go for the hail Mary
Second attempt intercepted
didn't quite work out.
Back again... score?
Wowee... Glad I picked them in Pick'em
Broncos scored 3 TDs in 5 minutes but gave away 6? penalties in one Giants drive
Another 15 yards against Denver for unnecessary roughness
Sloppy, but whatever works for them
Good. A TD at least.
I can't believe he got through there
What does John Elway have hanging from his belt?
Broncos 41- Giants 23
I have some things to do for tomorrow, so I'm going to leave you for the evening. Thanks again for the email, Steven. You're a good friend/SidepodFamily. Have a good week.
I hope your allergies and everything else improve quickly.
Thanks. I'm going to sell my boss on eBay, as you saw on twitter. That should improve things.
I hope you make some good money from him
That INT means it's over.
Broncos win their 13th straight regular season game and look like they could do well in the play offs.
Giants don't look like they have a hope of being in the play offs
I don't think I can manage another tonight, although I'll try to find a radio stream. Night to those staying - it should be a great game.
I am going to bed. Hopefully the 49ers will win and Gore and Boldin will get me lots of points
...Seattle D is tough to run on, but never say never.
Having said all that I'm staying up for some~
Seahawks hearing whistles and stood up, 9ers block it.
SEA INT at 1y line - another tip drill
Defences trading turnovers
Seattle's 12th man is loud tonight!
Defences now trading 3 and outs
Delay of game, for lightening... till whenever.
that's a new one.
it happened last week and also earlier today.
I've given up - esp as it'll appear on 4oD at some point.
