We're rocketing through the series, almost halfway through already! This fifth episode takes us into the world of biscuits, so make sure you stock up on snacks so you don't get hungry halfway through. I don't want to spoil any of the challenges coming up, but a quick read of the BBC suggests the Showstopper is a really tricky one! They seem to be getting harder and harder, but that's just whittling down our bakers until we get to the ultimate star baker for 2013. Yum!
The Great British Bake Off - Biscuits and traybakes
Published by Christine Blachford on
Mmm, biscuits.
I was looking through the recipes on offer from the GBBO series so far, thinking perhaps I could catch up my "Inspired By..." series at a later date. But I have to say there's not an awful lot there to actually inspire. It's either a weird combination of flavours, something I've never heard of, or too tricky for me.
I wonder if the amateur status of this competition is just going to keep getting further and further away.
I should probably take this opportunity to drag my face away from GTA V. Also, biscuits.
Addictive? The game not the biscuits.
yaaaaaayy! so excited for more baking! Made an Apple Curd cake with mum today. hmmmmm apples.
You can curd apples? I've heard of lemon curd, but not the apple variety.
Ever so slightly. That's what happens when you create something that has everything.
It even has in depth tennis for goodness sake!
i hadn't heard of apple curd either, but it's delish! It's a blessing really as we've found out we have another 4 apple trees - and there is only so much apple crumble/ pie we can take. This curd is apple and cinnamon. It tastes just like the yummy filling inside a crumble. It's good on toast too, and super easy to make!
Are you sure you didn't accidentally change the channel? :)
I'm awaiting the baking minigame.
they're blowing my mind a little bit.
Yummy sounding though.
I might try and make some egg custard tarts, they seem quite easy to m...
...*remembers last weeks disasters*
.....hmm
... or, just do the top 3 at the end of the series :) Like a Christine's mini bake off? Favourite, technical, show stopper etc etc? :)
It just turns it from "I could bake that" to the normal "watching people make stuff on TV." Very entertaining, perhaps slightly less inspiring.
If I see anything I like, I'll think about it :)
It's baking day again. This is a really bad time for it to be on because it is Champions League night and I have just discovered that on Sky's red button I can watch all 7 games at the same time with selectable commentary.
everyone likes biscuits ;) :)
We need red button baking
Watch all 3 trays in the oven, live.
but.... baking!!!
:)
Traybakes seem doable. I assume it is mixing up a lot of ingredients and then putting them in the oven. Although I have thought that before this series and been boggled at what they've come up with!
Towers of biscuits!
my friend who had NEVER ever baked until she came out of hospital for a major op (long story) baked a millionares shortcake traybake thingy.. having literally never baked before... and it was amazing. you can totally do traybakes :)
brownies are the best traybakes, i challenge you to mess up brownie making :)
Howdy all! :D
just in time! :)
5 a day!!!! XD
Wagon Wheels aren;t a biscuit!
They've been studying my diet :O
I did brownies! http://mrschristine.com/2012/11/28/super-chocolatey-chocolate-brownies/
Although that was almost a year ago, so probably about time I did some more.
Whatev's
Yay, Mel said 'whatevs'
oohhh yes!! well, then, how about blondies??
hmmm! breakfast flapjacks!!!!!!
Mmmm. brownies.
(except the hazelnut)
Ah ha, a quick google suggests this is something I might be able to cope with. :)
Bannoffee!
:) send me one ;)
We had a technician with us all day yesterday for our servers who looked just like Paul to the point most people started calling him Paul.
Honestly, spitting image. Less flour though. He didn't bake us anything.
ahahahaaa XD I love that she tried to get an upgrade on a train XD
I definitely can't name five different types of cherry :)
i didn't know there was 5 types of cherry!
I've got:
- bright red ones
- slightly darker ones
- cherryade
Nope, me either. Morello, glacé... that's about it.
red cherry, cherry coke, cherry springer, black stone cherry, the other one
:)
hmm marshmellow...
TIL baking stuff is female
Marshmallow is definitely one of those things that I never consider comes from ingredients.
There is one that is famous in Scottish comedy history that is called marschino or similar
hahaha yes definitely know what you mean. The girls and I at uni tried to make marshmellow last year. It went horribly wrong. we didn't have an electric whisk, it didn't set in the fridge and well. it was a task and a half. Have been put off making marshmellow since.
Sometimes it's good to keep the mystery behind things :)
Bless Howard!
Easier to settle wth going to Tesco and going 'where does it come from?!!!'
(probably not when in tesco)
too many things are made with nuts on/in them and it leaves me very conflicted
I bet the crew on this program go home fat after the series
wow!!
There needs to be a cooking baking show where they are not allowed to use nuts or cheese
edible jenga!
Edible Jenga may be the best thing I've ever seen.
The loser has to eat the tower
*takes a bottom piece*
Uhoh, got his science wrong there.
Ruby gives up too easily,
Typical. I switch over to see edible Jenga. Well you would. Only to find they have moved on to grotesque cakey things. I switch back to the footbally only to find that i have missed the only goal in the game so far
...Going all zen on us.

Tuiles are super easy, but then super impossible!
I thought a tuile was a flower.
the more you know.
i LOVE eating tuiles... cooking them tho....
Oh that's fiddly. Hammer hands Christine couldn't do that :)
howard reminds me of alan rickman
Howard has got it
Things you can only hear on the bake off - "dissatisfied with the size of this nozzle."
They all appear to have made swirly crisps
Crackage.
it's a lot of effort for something so... minor
oh i so so want to try making these. they are soo so tasty.
Crazy lady :)
I was thinking that. They definitely don't make that much effort for Pringles.
i have a mum who will offer her services the moment i get to the kitchen so it'll be two crazy ladies :)
but they taste SO GOOD!
they do look nice
Howard's doesn't look good
Well done Christine.
Good work Christine

Thanks all, can't believe it's halfway but onwards and upwards! Till next week :)
wut?
I guess someone is on nightshift baby patrol
Nightshift Baby Patrol sounds like a new version of CSI or something.
There is a lot of detective work in trying to figure out why it is still crying when you have done everything on the list
I'm glad it comes with a list, that's handy.
it's a short list if you get to sleep by 9pm.
The list starts in 4 or 5 hours with a little person making far more noise than it should be posible to get from such a small package
...All very true: We'll try to get him to down early so that we'll hopefully get in enough 2-hour naps before morning to constitute "a sleep".
Or, when he doesn't want to settle for hours and I have to hold him, then at least we've started early (as is the case now).
