As you might be aware from Steven Roy’s post, this week is Sky Sports’ rookie-week; so if you’ve not got into NFL, either so far this season or not at all, then this is as good a time and an even better place to start. The Sky show should explain a lot of different aspects of the game and the rules, but anything they don’t quite cover can be posed to our ‘NFL-regulars’. The games they have chosen for this showcase are the Baltimore Ravens hosting the Washington Redskins (1800 – Sky Sports) and the New Orleans Saints playing at the NY Giants (2125 – Sky Sports). The late KO will see the Detroit Lions, who are currently on a 4-game losing streak taking on the somewhat resurgent Green Bay Packers (0130 Mon am – C4). Monday night plays host to a huge matchup between the current top two AFC seeds when the Houston Texans play in New England against the Patriots (0120 Tues am – BBC); a Houston win all-but assures them the #1 spot.

Can I bring myself to cheer for the Oilers tonight... hmm....

I'm worried about the Colts tbh. If we lose tomorrow night we're 11-2, they'd go 9-4 with a win against the Titans, and we play each other twice in the last 3 weeks. If they win those, and match us in the other game, they'd win AFC South ahead of us...

    It's conceivable...

The VT's using actual games seemed good. Not so sure about the cheerleaders.

The big attraction of this game is the Redskins QB Robert Griffin the third or RG3. this is his first season and looks like he is going to be a big star

    Answer: Both?

Ooo the Ravens-Skins is tempting... but I think it's the Chargers again for me.

  • Steven Roy09/12/2012 at 18:15

    Answer: Both?

The both have done well but making that kind of decision in the past has cost people their jobs when one is immediately a star and the other never matches his college form

It's tough, though, sports psychology-wise. If you stop giving him the ball, then he gets that vote of no confidence. It could defeat or motivate him, depending on his personality. You have to walk the right line for each player.

@Sofia on twitter shared this today and now I've been keeping on eye on the Gävlebocken (giant straw Yule Goat) to see if anyone will burn it down this winter.

The wiki says "The goat has since had a history of being burnt down roughly every other year, 2011 being the 25th time...In 1971, the Southern Merchants became so frustrated with the continual burning of their goats, that for 15 years they stopped building them, and the task was taken up by the Natural Science Club of the School of Vasa. The Natural Science Club's Yule Goat fared no better; besides being burnt and vandalised, one year it was even run over by a car."

on the wiki, the year by year account of what happened or didn't happen is cracking me up. They fireproofed it in 2006 and someone said not even napalm could bring down the goat. It survived that year, but has been torched since.

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 19:43

I wonder how much of the guy's name has to do with choosing a goat. "In 1966 Stig Gavlén came up with the idea of a giant goat made out of straw. " I guess the location is significant, too. "... in central Gävle, is a giant version of a traditional Swedish Yule Goat figure made of straw."

    I don't know.

This reminds me of the statue of the Duke of Wellington in Glasgow. This is more than life size and he is on a horse on a plinth but he permanently has a traffic cone on his head. The Council used to remove them but the next day another one appeared

During the Olympics every time someone from britain won a gold medal a post box in their town was painted gold as a celebration. So the Duke had to get a treat too

    Can't be a co-incidence

I'm gonna go with climbers. There are quite a few stunts of a similar nature in Cambridge, albeit not as long lasting I expect.

I asked Sofia why they have a traditional Yule Goat.

@AndersFinn eeeee .... uhm You got me there. No clue. It has always been straw goats but smaller version. Our cat used to take issue with it

Just reading about him now. He was active before I was born... I've only really followed NFL in any detail the last 5-10 years.

The injury looked as bad as it sounds

Theismann's career ended on November 18, 1985 when he suffered a comminuted compound fracture of his leg while being sacked by New York Giants linebackers Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson during a Monday Night Football game telecast. The injury was voted the NFL's "Most Shocking Moment in History" by viewers in an ESPN poll, and the tackle was dubbed "The Hit That No One Who Saw It Can Ever Forget" by The Washington Post.[14]

    Luckily we're only 27, huh, Steven? ;)

No, not feeling old, not at all...

    Luckily we're only 27, huh, Steven? ;)

    Exactly

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU09/12/2012 at 21:22

I'll be 25 in the new year so not TOO far behind you...

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU09/12/2012 at 21:22

    Redskins FG, game over.

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 21:23

The injury looked as bad as it sounds

I will never forget seeing the tackle and then LT jumped up and pointed to the sidelines urgently because he knew it was bad. He heard it crack. Ew! :(

  • Steven Roy09/12/2012 at 21:23

Who would have thought you could take RG3 out of that team and still win that game

  • Will^09/12/2012 at 21:23

Ravens lose to a rookie and then his even less experienced replacement.

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 21:23

I only ever saw that injury once all those years ago and it is as clear in my mind today as it was then

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU09/12/2012 at 21:24

I'm squeamish so I'll pass thanks...

    Eagles won :o

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 21:24

I only ever saw that injury once all those years ago and it is as clear in my mind today as it was then

I successfully avoided seeing it all these years, thank goodness. I just saw LT hit him and jump up.

  • Steven Roy09/12/2012 at 21:25

I'm squeamish so I'll pass thanks...

Apparently it's on youtube but I would avoid it

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 21:25

Apparently it's on youtube but I would avoid it

    yes.

    Wait, Cowboys won?

  • Will^09/12/2012 at 21:26

BAL, PIT and CIN all lose tonight - don't think that does much to the playoff picture... the rest of the AFC aren't challenging too closely.

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 21:26

    Saints/Giants kick off.

  • Steven Roy09/12/2012 at 21:26

    Wait, Cowboys won?

They just showed that before that kick

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 21:26

    Wait, Cowboys won?

    poo.

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 21:27

    Victor Cruuuuuuuz

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 21:28

I like the Saints so this is one of those that I want the Giants to win, but I'm ok either way.

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 21:29

    phheeeewww

    Almost picked off by Saints

  • Will^09/12/2012 at 21:31

    Loose ball. Loose ball.

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 21:31

    Saints turnover.

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU09/12/2012 at 21:32

Is there an event of some sort this weekend? What are the round patches near the left shoulder? Noticed it on the Redskins, thought it was just them but see the Giants and Sainst are wearing them too?

  • Will^09/12/2012 at 21:32

    Chargers had them as well...

  • Will^09/12/2012 at 21:34

Answer: they are all 50th Year of Pro Football Hall of Fame commemorative patches.

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU09/12/2012 at 21:34

oops. Interception for TD, New Orleans.

am I ahead of you guys? I'll try to wait a bit before I comment?

  • Will^09/12/2012 at 21:38

Tried his best not to catch it. Maybe Eli shouldn't've rushed his adjustments.

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU09/12/2012 at 21:38

I'm ahead if anything, hence partly why I've gone schtum.

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU09/12/2012 at 21:40

    Giants TD.

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU09/12/2012 at 21:40

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU09/12/2012 at 21:41

  • Will^09/12/2012 at 21:41

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 21:41

    woo hoo. :) Fun start.

  • Will^09/12/2012 at 21:42

Checking the clinching scenarios for this weekend...

No-one can now clinch anything that wasn't already clinched. Indy's win blocks Houston, Baltimore lost, Atlanta lost and the 49ers needed a losses by Dallas, Tampa Bay and Minnesota who all won...

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 21:47

    Wow! Turnover again!

Those of us who can eat anything without worrying about what is in it don't realise how easy we have it. All we have to think about is whether we will like the taste

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU09/12/2012 at 22:03

Pass interference? I was expecting unnecessary roughness there...

  • moss02209/12/2012 at 22:05

it looked like a horse collar tackle to me

SPC Fantasy Football League next year?

  • moss02209/12/2012 at 22:07

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 22:15

I checked in with the Bengals and Jets, and Cowboys and Jaguars but I didn't care about those, so I watched the Skins/Ravens with these fine fellas.

  • Steven Roy09/12/2012 at 22:15

SPC Fantasy Football League next year?

Has to be worth a try

  • Steven Roy09/12/2012 at 22:16

No. Despite watching NFL games for more years than I am prepared to believe I still don't have a favourite team.

I liked it when I was there, but I was there in July, not December. My sister in Portland, Oregon has rain and in the 40's F (~ 4C), too. It's the same on each coast right now. We need it colder and snowier. That is my request.

  • Kai09/12/2012 at 22:29

Based on a very rough count they are up there. Looks like the Pats have the highest combined for/against points count with 690 followed by the Redskins 672.

    Bucs 662

    Raiders 650

    Saints 648

    Broncos 632

  • moss02209/12/2012 at 23:50

Good job the Seattle player dropped that. Think he was embarrassed to catch it.

  • Steven Roy10/12/2012 at 00:13

Surely if you are 18 points don with 9 minutes to go you have to fake the punt and try to get some yards

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU10/12/2012 at 00:14

Based on a very rough count they are up there. Looks like the Pats have the highest combined for/against points count with 690 followed by the Redskins 672.

    Coming back to this:

NFL Team Pd Total Pts Pts per Game

    New England Patriots 12 690 57.50

    New Orleans Saints 12 648 54.00

    Washington Redskins 13 672 51.69

    Detroit Lions 12 615 51.25

    Tampa Bay Buccaneers 13 662 50.92

    Tennessee Titans 13 657 50.54

    Oakland Raiders 13 650 50.00

  • moss02210/12/2012 at 00:14

    yeah you'd think eh

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU10/12/2012 at 00:17

Interestingly, the two teams involved in the lowest scoring games?

Seattle Seahawks (37pts per games) and Arizona Cardinals (35pts per game)

  • Steven Roy10/12/2012 at 00:17

    Coming back to this:

Looks a bit different when you look at the number of games played. The difference in the type of season the top two have had is interesting. Pats 9-3 and Saints 5-7

  • Noelinho10/12/2012 at 00:21

Pats have 170 net points. And people say they have no defence...

  • moss02210/12/2012 at 00:23

If both teams are scoring, highest combined score is...

Most Points, Both Teams, Game, 113

Washington Redskins (72) vs New York Giants (41), Nov. 27, 1966

  • Mr C10/12/2012 at 00:32

    https://en.wikipe…onship_Game,_1940

silly question, but have nfl scores always been the same?

e.g f1 chops and changes so you can't compare historically, but it 73-0 still comparable to 58-0?

  • moss02210/12/2012 at 00:32

    good question

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU10/12/2012 at 00:33

e.g f1 chops and changes so you can't compare historically, but it 73-0 still comparable to 58-0?

Was still 6 for a touchdown, 1 for a conversion, aye...

  • Kai10/12/2012 at 00:34

If both teams are scoring, highest combined score is...

the alternative is hard to imagine, but...wow.

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU10/12/2012 at 00:34

If you want more modern examples...

Most Points, Both Teams, Game, Since AFL/NFL Merger, 106

Cincinnati Bengals (58) vs Cleveland Browns (48), November 28, 2004

Most Points, Shutout Victory, Game, Since AFL/NFL Merger, 59

Los Angeles Rams vs Atlanta Falcons, Dec. 4, 1976

New England Patriots vs Tennessee Titans, Oct. 18, 2009

  • Mr C10/12/2012 at 00:35

Was still 6 for a touchdown, 1 for a conversion, aye...

cheers. just wondered if it was harder to amass points these days. nice that it's consistent.

Btw, picking up a point from earlier, Patriots have conceded the 8th fewest points so their defence is pretty good. Mind you, they have played a game fewer than most as they don't play til tomorrow.

  • Mr C11/12/2012 at 01:32

  • Noelinho11/12/2012 at 01:33

  • Noelinho11/12/2012 at 01:44

  • Noelinho11/12/2012 at 01:45

I expect they wanted to rearrange as the Texans hammered them on the groin son those first two plays

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU11/12/2012 at 01:45

How was that first formation illegal, I didn't see?

  • Noelinho11/12/2012 at 01:46

Think there was a wide receiver on the line that wouldn't have been

  • Mr C11/12/2012 at 01:49

i've never seen two people look more out of place :)

  • Noelinho11/12/2012 at 01:56

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU11/12/2012 at 01:57

    Aye.

**restarts live stream as seems to be a play behind**

  • Mr C11/12/2012 at 01:57

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU11/12/2012 at 01:58

I'm on the BBC site, and you've not spoiled anything, I'm prob a bit less than a play.

  • Mr C11/12/2012 at 01:58

    phew

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU11/12/2012 at 01:58

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU11/12/2012 at 02:24

    Well this is going well...

  • Mr C11/12/2012 at 02:24

    ahh.

  • Mr C11/12/2012 at 02:25

this game is yet to deliver on its promise.

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU11/12/2012 at 02:27

Not far off what I'd expected though. We're a good solid team, but don't think we're quite as good as 11-1 suggests. There's a reason I'm still wary of the Colts... though do think we can beat them to win the division.

  • Jay (@burwellian) - HOU11/12/2012 at 02:29

Our 1 loss wasn't particularly close... 42-24. The Packers led that one 14-0 after the first quarter as well, like Patriots tonight.

  • Mr C11/12/2012 at 03:04

first half done. i'ma gonna call it a night. cheers for the comments/reminder all :)

  • Kai12/12/2012 at 23:17
