It’s back! The season kicks off on Thursday Night Football with the Denver Broncos hosting the reigning Superbowl Champion Baltimore Ravens (01:30 Fri - Sky Sports). On Sunday an NFC South divisional game sees the Atlanta Falcons, with their high-powered offence, face off against the New Orleans Saints, led by sure-fire Hall of Fame QB Drew Brees (18:00 - Sky Sports). Later, perennial contender Green Bay Packers host February’s runners-up San Francisco 49ers (21:25 - Sky Sports). The late game features an all-NFC East matchup as the New York Giants play ‘America’s team’, the Dallas Cowboys (01:30 - C4). Monday Night Football sees Chip Kelly’s up-tempo Philadelphia Eagles play the Washington Redskins, now with a healthy RG3 back under centre (12:10 Tues - channel TBC). Finally the ever-competitive Houston Texans travel to the San Diego Chargers, who hope their fortunes are revitalised under new management (03:20 Tues TBC).
NFL Week 1
Published by Will Davies on
I'll be back at 6pm Sunday.
Just saw the score. My fantasy team made a good start thanks to Peyton Manning getting 46 points for passing 462 yards, passing for 7 TDs and not being intercepted. I think after that I can forgive him for -2 rushing yards.
The Broncos D only got 8 points despite 2 interceptions and 4 sacks because they lost 27 points.
My cheap Tight End Dennis Pitta has a lot of zeros against his name but he was there because he was cheap.
Great start for the Broncos.
Aw, I can't even say that?! Fair enough. Haven't checked any of my fantasy leagues yet, can't even remember who I drafted!
Pitta is cheap because he is injured, and will give you nothing for a good few weeks: change him!
family friendly comments chappie ;)
Welp, turns out I'm losing currently in EVERY league I'm in. Smh.
Who's watching what tonight? In fact, who's watching?
I'll either be watching RedZone or the Saints.
Evening all. I'll probably miss the Falcons-Saints but be back in time for the 9ers-Pack.
Come On Falcons.
I'm watching the Patriots game. May side-by-side it with Vikings-Lions too.
Despite my vested fantasy interests, I'm just gonna watch Falcons/Saints on Sky. As they're my second team, I'll be supporting the Saints.
Just watched the reminders from the NFC championship game, it is still painful.
Falcons Saints should be an offence heavy affair. And that Birds' kicker better do some good kicking ;)
That's balcked out for me, as is SF-GB
Must work on my NFL Power Rankings too.
it doesn't matter which games we have, just that the ones at the top are at least on the tv for some of us, rather than game pass.
NFL baby yeah!
Yeah, I was going to go for Gamepass this year but as I've only JUST started earning, I can't really afford it. Next year I'll be there. Who's our first team by the way? Eagles for me.
First team is the Falcons.
i'll be around for the 1:15 game, not sure i'll see the end of that. can also do the sky games this year, just not the first one :)
Ridley's first rush of the season was a fumble.
Falcons punt on first possession. Come on Brees, do your thing.
Jets at Buccaneers or Pats at the Bills. I guess I'll check in with the Pats game.
it's been a while.
Bills challenging that Ridley was down by contact - guess it wasn't given as a fumble after all. Weird thing is, I'm sure the Pats had the football anyway.
...and I start with....ads. :s
I took advantage of Paddy Power's offer to refund all losing multiples of five-fold or more and put a tenner on seahawks/colts/bucs/saints/steelers/pats all to win - returns £72. Not bad and if I lose I'll put it on more sensible stuff next week.
Gooo Green Bay Mermen!
Bierman. I also am a Beer man.
Dalton throws a pick. Fantasy team in ruins.
Buffalo lost their daft challenge. Although even if they'd won it, Patriots would still have had the ball. Odd one. Anyway, Pats have now punted.
AP with a HUGE (78 yard) TD run. The man is a machine.
Bills fumble! Pats first down in redzone
Harry Douglas is the man.
Ryan to Gonzalez, simultaneously boosting and screwing over one or another of my fantasy teams.
PICK! Dennard... though now ruled incomplete. Looked fine to me.
Oh, yeah, he didn't hold on.
4th and inches for NO
Going to go 14-0 up now.
Wow, so there's three 2-0 games at the moment!
Good from NO def, holding on to just the FG. Ryan could be in a little trouble too, took a very late hit to the ribs.
I currently have the Patriots, Jets, Steelers and Raiders games all on :-)
You guys get so many more games than I do. :( I could pay more for NFL Sunday Ticket, but I pay so much already for satellite. Boo US coverage of another sport I like....
We get regional games only, so by being outside the country you have your pick.
Tell you what, Manuel looks pretty good in the pocket right now for the Bills.
Dalton throws a TD. Fantasy looking up.
Detroit FG. Minnesota lead 7-6.
I'm switching to check out the 2:00 Rolex sports car race. Catch you later.
Detroit TD seems to have been brought back for a penalty.
Oh, and Stafford's been picked off now.
What did Julio Jones just do?!
First and goal on the five.
This may get reversed after review.
Oh, yes, it will. No question.
Dalton just threw a second pick.
Ridley fumbled. It's returned for a touchdown. Awaiting verdict. I think it will stand.
Yep, that will stand. That's twice he's coughed up today. There's no way he'll be starting next week.
Evening. Thought I'd have a look at the Saints game as I like them.
Ruling confirmed. Ridley will likely spend the rest of the game on the bench.
He'll never start again.
He will, but he won't next week. He might not get another snap today. BB will happily give Vereen or Blound the ball for a while.
I was planning on being here for the start of the Saints-Falcons game but I seem to be a few minutes (ahem) late.
EJECTION! Alexander (Panthers) booted for throwing a punch.
Great place for a Merc logo on the inside of the roof of the dome
Arrington forces another fumble. He's been brilliant so far today.
425 yards total offence in te Falcons Saints first half.
And back from dinner. Seems I missed a good period of play in NO/ATL.
Amendola off - looks like groin.
Tyrone Walker off on a buggy with an injury
Falcons to punt with 39 seconds left in the first half. Ryan sacked on second down then penalised for intentional grounding at 3rd and 20. Although it looked like the receiver turned inside on his run when Ryan expected him to go outside
Having said that, Ryan's throw was a good ten metres outside the sideline, looked like. Very fair penalty.
Touchdown Patriots. Edelman again.
It was a very poor throw. No doubt about that
By the way, if you've not seen the score after three seconds in the Titans - Steelers game, check it out on NFL.com. It's quite a fail.
First player in the whole league in his coach's bad books this season. Quite an achievement
Brady picked off in a weird collision between receiver and Rodgers.
*Rogers - not up on the Bills team tbh
Also, Bruno Mars announced as half-time act at Superbowl 48: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000239792/article/bruno-mars-to-play-super-bowl-xlviii-halftime-show
Touchdown Bills. Two plays. Manuel looks so composed.
The biggest of mehs.
It did help that his man was wide open, but still, he doesn't look under pressure at all.
Does the Superbowl clash with something all the better acts are at?
50 yard Steven Jackson run. Boom.
A bit nervous about my bet now..
Saints take the lead again with a touchdown for Graham. 17-20 including the PAT
Pats went for it, 4th down on the 1; Brady dropped the snap.
3rd quarter at New Orleans has finished
Bills outplaying the Patriots on all sides at the moment.
Russell Wilson just threw a beauty. Touchdown, and the lead.
Seahawks 2PC no good. 12-7.
Brady sacked on 3rd down in the redzone
FG good. Bills lead 21-20.
I expected the Pats to comfortably beat the Bills
Saints going for it on 4th and 2
Looks like they were trying to get the Falcons to jump offside. Kicking team get a field goal giving a 6 point lead.
Falcons have 3:12 to get a TD
Game winning drive. Good job Matty is made of ice.
Falcons 1st and goal from the 7 with 1:10 to go.
3rd and 3 - 52 seconds
Amendola with a bif 3rd down reception with 8 mins left.
Incomplete 3rd down pass.
4th and 3 for the game
Interception. Saints just need to kill 43 seconds to win
Took a couple of knees and the game is over.
Falcons 17 Saints 23
Bills not trying to take any time off the clock in their 3 and out. Weird.
Jacksonville still going strong with their two points.
Two minute warning. Bills lead by 1. Pats have a first down in Bills territory.
Hey there. I hope to be tuned in by the next KOs.
N one league I'm currently regretting playing Calvin over Steve Johnson!
Another crucial first down throw to Amendola!
Jets leading by 1 at 2:00 warning; Tampa with the ball
Gostkowski will kick it to win it.
FG is GOOD. Patriots lead with 0:05 remanining.
The Bills have been really unlucky to be honest. They were the better team today overall.
Tampa kicking to win it.
Kick is good from Lindell. Just over 30 seconds left for Jets to come back.
Talk about doing it the hard way
WOW. Jets get a shot at a field goal after a STUPID personal foul penalty.
The Jets can snatch this.
KICK IS GOOD. JETS WIN.
Davis is crying.
Blimey... Tampa got rather close to the goal line on the kickoff. Still, it's over, Jets win 18-17.
Now the Yankees have won in the most ridiculous way possible I can concentrate on the Packers-49ers
Horrible start for the Packers.
1 yard run followed by Rogers getting sacked for a loss of 8. Got some yards back on third down but had to punt
It still seems wrong seeing a 49ers team run the ball so much after all those years of the west coast offence.
Almost got a touchdown from a 30 yard pass but the receiver's feet were just out of bounds
Kaepernick to Vernon Davis for the TD
Evening Finally set up :D
Just in time to see the Packers equalise
Right, going to enjoy the BALLGAME now. Falcons will bounce back.
Cardinals 7-0 on the Rams
yup - got a sleepy baby^ in my arms, and i'm teachng him about the nfl
Is he going to comment as much as the cat?
not yet, just lower the typoing standards znd speed of mune
in t he sidepodfantasy league my bench has more points than my starters
I have picked up some useful points. I need Frank Gore and Michael Crabtree to get points in this game
Dude, Crabtree is injured
Congratulations to you and his mom.
I need to check up on players I pick
Bolden wide open
Crabtree out till November at least
I wanted Kaepernick as my starter so much. But I can't really be sad because I have P. Manning. I had no idea what I was doing in the draft, so it was purely by accident that I clicked some of the right things at the right time and there he was.
having him on your roster stops someone taking his points
I didn't do the draft one. Peyton was a good buy this weekend
Kai, that could score 161 points this week according to projections. WOW.
Very clever marketing to have the "Get Tickets" button snuggled right in with our fantasy stats. Very tempting.
it is a brilliant way to market
That's crazy. I can't say enough how clueless I was at that draft. I should've called them the Happy Accidents.
me2, i'm just theorising as i go
Thank you for your help that draft day, once again. You were very patient as I fired questions at you via twitter.
That was messy
Yeah. Very Week 1 looking.
that's ok - thisis my first year akso, so i'd already had to learn it all... plus that was my 3rd draft (i'm in 3 leagues) so i knew my way
VERY happy I got Victor Cruz. <3
That was crazy. Way out of bounds when he did that
Who goes after a QB's neck when he is out of bounds?
evil horsecollar tackle
That's the way to stop all that other crap.
This game could get very scrappy
so long as kap puts up the points
I'm still watchnjg , but in bed, so not real commenting. Realised I can see the Packers game via Red zone :-)
I now have both arms+hands back... we'll see for how long
It looks like th 2/3 Fleagues i'm most interested in doing well in that my matchups have tanked... poor choices on my part mainly
10 yard penalty against GB for holding
just gives rodgers 10 more yards to work with
Interesting tackling technique by Rodgers
Love a good qb tackle.
Such a good INT
i want to see the tackle again
He ran into the blocker and bounced off him into the ball carrier
i know, i just want to see it again :D
Bad call. He had both feet on the ground when he was 'tackled' and when he hit the ground there was no contact between them
i don't know what the letter of the law is
It's a tackle if there is contact between the two players and the ball carrier has anything other than his feet on the ground
Bolden is the new Crabtree
so glad i benched the packers' D
A lot of movement on that kick.
14:14 at half time
Jumped the gun a little. SF have one play
Incomplete pass from Kaepernich from a long way out
The finley td is good for my fantasy in the sidepodcast league.
Second half just kicked off
are you in any other leagues dan?
Steven, this might be a useful link to check players: http://fantasy.nfl.com/research/scoringleaders
Oh I like that, too. Thanks, Will.
After that pass I wish I had Lap and Boldin
You can click on a player to get info, or search for them... generally to see who's healthy and who's hot
I have Kap in 1 league... i need him to score 30+... he has 23
Good drive by Kaepernick. 21-14
I look have Boldin on the bench in my other league. WHY!
Good drive by the Packers. Would have been harder if the 49ers hadn't donated 15 yards for a penalty
i loved the qb-run for the 1st and the 9ers back catching finley and sending him oob
I'm flipping between the game and the replay on tv of the Rolex race. I didn't know Dario was racing here at Laguna Seca until they interviewed him. oops.
I saw a tweet from Kanaan about an hour ago about Dario. That was the first I knew he was racing
Great pass and reception. Kaepernick to Vernon Davis
Love those across the middle. Beautiful.
Adam's team is having a great day - Is That Your Final Ansah is up to 111!
49ers looked like they were going straight up the field for a TD but had to settle for a field goal
Packers 3 and out
I used to be more of a Packers fan, but with Kap and Davis and others, I'm rooting for them. And Matthews being an idiot has helped me open up to the 9ers.
49ers were one of the first teams I liked when we first got the NFL here. Joe Montana and the west coast offence was a fabulous way to learn the game
True. They were winning everything so I liked the underdogs. :)
49ers rushing game seems to have fallen apart
I do like the 2 sides trading scores :) This is a good game to kick my season off with
I agree. I always like a good game vs a blowout with 'my' team winning.
Was that a late hit on the QB?
There really are a lot of great players out on the that field today, on both sides.
wasn't watching closely enough... after the replay possibly not
It looked like he was hit just as he went out of frame in real time
looked like Kap still had the ball the Mathews launched himself
49ers O line giving Kapaernick loads of time to make plays
I wonder if anyone understands what Kap is saying. Can barely make out a word
"hey guys i've found fido!"
or is that jut brady's audible?
Rodgers so close to getting sacked
Kaepernick sounds like the father of a family in danger in a horror movie.
glong 4th it
oh, and let's beat the hell out of each other.
Made it on 4th and 2
i love it when a plan comes together
9ers win as the hail mary never gets thrown
Anyone hanging around for the next one?
No. I have Sunday night shows like Breaking Bad to watch. :)
Thanks for the thread and I'll see you guys next week.
Maybe! It's a school night, but I may be able to stop by. Who's playing?
eagles - skins
texans - chargers
Wait. Giants and Cowboys tonight?? hmmm.... I may pop in....
the amount i watch depends on whether Baby^ falls properly asleep... when he does i'm moving us both upstairs, so i'd end up listening on the radio.
i'll be watching, but happy to passively consume rather than actively comment.
i fell asleep to the hockey this morning, i may as well pass out to the football tonight.
Sports. Giving you pleasant dreams for over 50 years.
channel 4 coverage starting now.
Bookending the day dozing to sports, perfect.
i'm not that old ;)
haha! I know. I was trying to pick a random, large-ish number. 100 seemed like too much. 20, too few.
hehe. staying up until 1am watching football makes me feel 20.
VK presenting the C4 highlights show, called it 2+ weeks ago
c4 doing Wembles & Superbowl
he's a big fan and plays safety in the UK amateur league
he plays on defence for the London Warriers
One of the little guys that stands 30+ yards behind the line of scrimmage and mops everything up.
as tiny as this guy?
He's not a pretty face that is being told to say stuff, he is a 100%-clued up fan of the game
well he just confirmed it. not sure i believe it though. you're all rick rolling me i'm sure.
All the gear... http://img.thesun.co.uk/aidemitlum/archive/01663/VernonKay_1663298a.jpg
how is this news to me.
Dunno, he's been doing it for a while
I met him a good few years back, after he did some dying
And here he is on the roster: http://www.londonwarriorsafc.co.uk/index.php/team/roster/senior
dj-ing - I even thought about not making that mistake.
i tried to guess. came up blank.
j and y are reasonably close on a keyboard... :S
fireworks on the roof of an enclosed stadium is odd.
what a start!
INT already!! Maybe this game is going to be better than I'm expecting
what the hell does that guy have on his wrist? nfl cheat codes?
yep - for want of a better description
i want some.
shame...wilson is supposed to be breaking out this season
£7 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Martin-Sports-Football-Quarterback-Wrist-Coach/dp/B0049ECRR2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378687939&sr=8-1&keywords=wrist+coach you can put important coding thingies on it for quick reference
What happened? He's on my team.
(as in wilson fumbled)
heard that too. :)
brilliant return, could've been better though
of course, but soo close to the pick-6
OK, I'm calling it, this game will be better on the radio (Absolute Radio 90s) to send me to sleep.; Night all, see you back here for MNF (more like TMF for us ;) )
woah. nbc 360!
somehow they've brought the matrix rig to live sport. that may be the most impressive thing i've seen on tv in a while.
there was something a bit like it during gymnastics at the olympics, but that panned about 4ft. this angle just covered the whole end zone.
oh, it's debuting today: http://www.thewrap.com/tv/article/tca-touchdown-neo-sunday-night-football-plans-matrix-style-replays-106441
Sounds immense... Turns out there is only 1 radio game each week, and that was an earlier one. Shame 5L gave up in having 3 games on a Sunday
I kind of fell asleep and missed the last game.
Vernon Kay has often talked about playing and he even did a program last year or the year before where he got his old team back together to play some other team for some other reason.
From down here 6 ft 4 is not tiny.
heeh. skinny then.
As an update to the scheduling British Eurosport is now the carrier for MNF in the UK.
i think that's a good thing. we have SD on the TV and christine subscribes to the HD stream on their app. not quite as convenient as having it on the beeb though.
It's a better thing than having it hidden away on the red button, so no iPlayer app for mobile get a look in.
Here's Eurosport's "Why to watch the MNF opener on Eurosport": http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/the-rundown/six-reasons-why-watch-mnf-opener-british-eurosport-081303341.html
i couldn't miss the debut of the chip kelly offence
this could be tricky. i need more screens. one sec.
This could be one of the best shows of football... 2x read option offences, minimal D, plus the Eagles' up-tempo approach
I hope i'm not wrong
righto. nfl on the telly, tennis on the small screen. our poor bandwidth.
The game has started. 1 minute played
i missed who's presenting. is it just the US stream?
my coverage just switched to PGA Golf. good to see Eurosport haven't lost their touch!!
If i'm slow or bD at typing, its because i've got Baby^ in my right arm
Redskins score a TD after a pass from Vick was batted down, picked up and returned 80 yards for the score.
Play under review now
wow, good start to this one.
Ruling on the field stand. 6-0 Redskins
(I'm at work, difficult to watch)
Vick was unlucking with those calls, then not enough to be able to overturn
Another reason I'm not a fan of that 'Skins TD on defence... I need RG3 to do all the playmaking tonight
Vick had a wide open receiver in the end zone and didn't even see him. Eagles kicker lined up to go for the field goal on 4th down and his own head coach interupted his run up to the kick to challenge the previous play
Ruling on the field is confirmed. So now the kicker has to go again
He makes the kick
Eagles 3 Skins 7
Skins fumble the ball and turnove possession
First play of the new drive and Vick completes a TD pass from 25 yards.
Turnovers can be very important in the outcome of a game
That was a really well designed play, giving Vick a year to throw the ball
I love this Eagles offence... they're my pick for the
aww, i was gonna guess...
2nd and 18 and Vick sacked for the loss of another 10 yards
Eagles get a safety. Poor pass from RG3 but it should have been catchable
in case you missed it yesterday. has to been to be believed.
amazing and trippy
it wasn't anywhere near that fast when they showed it, but you get the idea.
I do. Love to see it to pick out some of the mistakes going on here.
Michael Vick seems incapable of spotting open receivers tonight.
i am done y'all. catch you for more next sunday.
also thursday games if you up for them. #literally
couldn't say much for the ht show... just a Europsort WATTS clipshow :S
I'm calling it there... the need for sleep is outweighing this (great) game
I shall keep watching alone, in this, my season of american sports :D
I don't like when the Eagles win because Michael Vick is a horrible person.
the Chargers first issue is their logo looks like a toupee.
at some point i have to do some work, so, no.
