With the regular season over, let the playoffs begin; we’re now on the final stretch of the road to Super Bowl XLVIII. This weekend the third and forth seeds in each conference host the sixth and fifth, respectively. On Saturday the Kansas City Chiefs (last season’s worst team) are at the Indianapolis Colts, lead by last season’s #1 Draft pick QB Andrew Luck (21:35 Sat – Sky Sports). Later the wildcard New Orleans Saints play the strengthening Philadelphia Eagles (01:10 Sun – Sky Sports). On Sunday the San Diego Chargers face the Cincinnati Bengals (18:05 Sun – SkySports). These two have already faced each other this season; the Bengals were narrow victors first time around. Finally, last year’s Super Bowl losers, the San Francisco 49ers are at the Green Bay Packers, who are getting healthy on offence at just the right time (21:40 Sun – Sky Sports). Winners in the AFC will face the Broncos or Patriots, and in the NFC, next up are the Seahawks or the Panthers.
NFL Playoffs - Wild card weekend
Published by Will Davies on
Evening all.
Still time to get an entry in for the Playoff Challenge: http://playoffchallenge.fantasy.nfl.com/
Set up a team, then find the sidepodcast group :)
As it's all on Sky, I'll be watching tomorrow night. Tonight, just picking up what I can find. NowTV tomorrow., Gamepass isn't very useful in the postseason :-(
There is that.
The Chiefs & Colts are taking to the field... Kansas City on O first. Here we go
any players in your team tonight?
Nope, none. I've got a lot of byes, I've only 1 playing this week.
How about you?
Charles, but that's it. Two others this week. AJ Green and someone else. Rest are all Broncos or Seahawks.
Smith does some escaping with his legs, but misses an open TE
before Charles went down? That was a nice run.
AJ Green is my guy tomorrow at 1805.
Yeah. It was a decent gain, but it looked like there was one of the 2-bunched TEs who was very open.
Yeah, but the way Smith plays is always about first downs, moving the chains. Nothing big. As long as it gets a first down, it's good enough for him.
...hence why I dropped Dwayne Bowe in Fantasy - dropped him like a stone.
Looks like it's to the locker room for some concussion protocol for JC.
Fantasy curse struck already
We saw last week that the Chiefs backup RB Davis was a decent runner (against a poor SD D) but JC being injured will mess up 68% of people's playoff challenges.
that's a flag in the regular season
And the man who was dropped like a stone catches the TD.
He was useless in the regular season (compared to so many other WRs)
Decent drive. No third downs, were there?
Apart from on the last play, I think
That last one was a 3rd, unless there was a last minute penalty that ruled it out.
Chiefs-Colts Game Center + drive chart
If the Colts do the length of the field for a TD on this drive, this promises to be a long game :D
Good separation by Hilton on that TD
That was even easier than the Kansas TD> No D showing yet.
Winners will be whichever D show up.
...eventually.
152.6 QB Rating on that drive for Luck.
Meh.
Smith's was 121.4
Evening all
I thought he was going to pass the ball to the guy who was following him
me too
Some awful attempts at tackling there
Anyone who has Bowe in their team is already well in the points.
Unfortunately not me
Mike Carlson just tweeted the same thing
They should go for it. Field position is great if they fail.
Evening.
Honestly, Alex Smith is so much better than people give him credit for.
Colts secondary evaporated there
Stepped up at the perfect time, threw it at the perfect time, right on the money. Couldn't have played that any better.
I think his reputation took a hit because he was pushed out of SF by Kaepernick
I'll be honest, that's a surprise lead.
yeah, and that was only because CK can run. Not that Smith can't...
Love this
https://twitter.com/FauxJohnMadden/status/419594247780564992
What was he doing passing the ball from one hand to the other in tight coverage like that?
I don't think the dink-&-dunk scheme this season helped his rep.
(Baby^ bedtime meant no hands for typing for the last couple of series.)
No, but he executes it superbly. People get too hung up about explosive passes. They forget this sport is fundamentally about moving the chains. If you keep moving the chains, you win.
Just as well you are not a Colts fan or Baby^ would be awake again
No penalties yet, though we did have the no-call on an endzone hold
Then if the D turns up, and it looks like they've remembered to rush the passer, then the opposition finds it much harder to score.
Lovely shovel pass!
That was brilliant. More space on the replay than at first glance.
I always love to see those because you know they are not planned and players are thinking on their feet
Looks like KC are really missing JC, having to move more towards the pass is a real burden.
Only the completion ratio stopping Smith having a perfect rating right now.
Maybe it is the new master tactic. Pull your star player out and screw up the plans of the opposition's defence
earlier I was thinking they'd be made to pay for only getting an FG on 2nd series.
do you think that's why the Pats got rid of Welker?
Currently the only Colt in the ideal Fantasy line-up is the TE Fleener.
Only if Brady turns into their leading rusher in the playoffs
Do you think the Colts' safeties now need to offer more over the top support?
They may as well blitz as sit back and let someone run through them llike the second TD
There is that. Chiefs seem to have their number.
Colts' O is also toast if Hilton is out for too long.
Hilton back.
Have to go for 4th and 6 inches
Nicely played.
I was expecting a quarterback draw until I saw where Luck lined up
He's a master of the when-necessary scramble.
ok, question: what's the latest time you think the last game tomorrow will finish?
Colts need a stop. (Statement of the obvious)
0230 Monday.
it's more likely to be no later than 0130, right?
JC is OUT for the rest of the game (official).
fantasy fail
Yes
I'm trying to work out what time to activate the NowTV pass.
Assuming the Chiefs win, you'll still get double with him next week.
Ahha - understand.
I won't want him next week though. I just wanted loads of points rushing through the Colts' D tonight.
Fair. He'll likely be up against the Broncos' D, so not nesc a good match up.
Yeah 0130 (-0200 if you're unlucky, -0230 if the weather or another blackout comes to town)
Hmm, next question is, how long do I want to stay up tonight? Saints vs Eagles... should be close.
If I make the end of this game I will have done well... I'm definitely not going to watch the late game.
I'm always amused by the way they always cover their mouths.
And show the opposition half of their plays?
that too :-)
also, when did Andrew Luck start growing his Amish beard?
He has had his neard for ages (since last season?)... it's now just out of hand
Fair enough. Think this might be the first time I've watched them this season.
neard being his neck-beard, not a typo.
Great running for the 1st.
Is Smith trying to negotiate a new contract? He is doing things he normally never does
I think Smith has Bowe in his fantasy team this week.
Double shakkas was the call.
Kansas lead by 21. If the Colts can get a TD before halftime, it's not awful, because they get the ball in the 2nd half.
And then because Luck is so good at leading game-winning drives.
Best rushing average in the game: Andrew Luck. Second-best: Alex Smith.
If that was RG3, he would've fumbled the ball as he fell on it
If that was RGIII, he wouldn't be in the playoffs! :-)
Accurate.
Interesting fact, this season's Chargers are 4-0 against teams playing today.
pick
When you are 21 points down and have just been sacked don't try to force a pass and get intercepted
Looks like Peyton has left some of his January nightmares in Indy.
I like how the Chiefs were still going for it at the end of the half.
This is going to take an incredible comeback from the Colts to win this.
I only hope they saw what Texas A&M did to Duke a week ago
We've seen plenty of teams do it this season, but I somewhat doubt it.
Another interception
That is not how to start the half (or even play any time)
Oopsie.
Too easy.
G A M E O V E R
Bring on the 50-burger.
I didn't expect Luck to throw so many bad passes
The Suck for Luck campaign is taking on a new meaning.
The sucked so they got Luck. Now they have Luck and they still suck
Sounds like a cold day in Philladelphia. Hundreds of people shifted tons of snow from the field and grandstands
The Broncos pretty much know they'll face an AFC West rival next weekend.
Great pass and catch
That's more like it.
Colts TD? What happened? I last saw the KC TD
Huge bomb to Derrick Rodgers, then Brown made himself skinny and ran it up the middle.
Damn Americans with their food adverts!
Didn't look like any Burger King I have ever seen
After Harbaughbowl last year, I'd love to see Alex Smith bet CK in the Superbowl this year :-)
Me either, I could quite easily go for all that stuff on the grill right now.
KC don't need Charles. They should trade him to NE.
That could be interesting. Since we also had the Manningbowl how about Peyton and Luck next season
We would likely have Peyton-Luck next week if the Colts can manage to win this.
We all saw that fumble coming from three seconds away, didn't we?
Colts need to recover that
I think that's a good recovery.
That might be overturned - looked like he was still bobbling it as he did his final roll OOB.
Yes, but the view is concealed, which makes that hard to overturn. His other hand is planted, I think.
There is one shot that does look in from between his legs, which until then I thought he was solid. Now I'm less certain.
Hmm, I'm leaning towards not a recovery now, actually.
Apollo 440 being played in the studium?
But if you're indecisive, play stands. So it stands.
Not enough evidence to oveturn that.
Comms called it a challenge. Silly sausages. By rule, it's an automatic review. I hate that rule, but it's the rule.
I thought that he did not have possession but it was one of those calls that was never going to change the ruling on the field regardless of what that ruling was
I heard them say that, and I've gotten used to automatically ignoring the mistake.
Yep, totally. Can't rule by instinct on replay.
It's just, the rule's been there for two years. They know the game inside out, supposedly. That's a basic mistake.
TD Colts.
Jost keep giving the ball to Donald Brown
I kind of think that they've been working the game for many more years before the rule, so it gets said on auto-pilot. Should be an easy correction tbf
Good play call. KC were a mess along the line
2-score game.
Cheifs WR Donnie Avery ruled OUT.
That was a really innocuous knock.
Or, it was in-knock-uous
They are often the worst. It's like players who go down with no-one near them in football
Losing CB Brandon Flowers, not to be confused with the lead singer of the Killers, will seriously hurt defending against Luck's deep bombs.
I think it's his back rather than his head, but I'm not sure.
Dunno if he makes it back before the Colts' next possession.
If he's gone to the locker room, I'd say doubtful. Maybe back in 4th.
I can see KC slowing their offence down, taking time off the clock.
Chiefs are benefiting from resting their starters last week. Need some backup this week.
Looks like giving all their backups a whole game to get up to speed is proving a great decision.
They need to speed up a bit. Only 75 mins 'til 2nd game is meant to start. It's slowed down a lot.
It would have been interesting to get an interception off the heel
I was after a blocked punt. Can never get enough of those.
Or a fake punt :D
Flowers was a head hit. Evaluating for concussion now.
That looked like Hilton tried a QB hand off
INT?!
fumble
That was bad all round by the Colts
Interception. Receiver didn't have possession.
well, bad dropsies more than a fumble
You don't win when you're minus three on turnovers.
I think the Bengals managed to against the Ravens last week, bu tthe Baltimore's only offence is Justin Tucker.
It was better when it was Billy Cundiff :-)
I missed that one.
So did he :-)
The practise field goal kick seems to have become popular this season. Every time a time out is called the kicking team justrun through their play
Lay up - no one could resist dropping that punchline.
Forget the Bengals-Ravens comment, it was 4-3 on turnovers.
Great play by Luck to avoid the hit and then make the pass
Luck is a beast.
Darn it. Website backup just started and it's killing my bandwidth.
Never normally NFL on a Saturday evening for it to get in the way of.
I just cancelled it.
TD Colts.
10 point game
Fleener and Luck were at college together IIRC.
missed it. I've killed my conenction :-(
Commentator earlier on was talking about someone who was at Stanford with him but I can't remember who
are we on 1st down?
1st and 10, just caught by Bowe
I'm with it then, albeit with full audio but 2fps
I miss fibre.
It was those 2, both at Stanford. The Colts took Luck in the 1st round in 2012, then straight away picked Fleener in the 2nd round.
3rd quarter FINALLY ends!
That was a pretty big quarter.
10 points in it at the end of the third. Far closer than I expected it to be. Colts could be leading if they had not given aways the easy interceptions
That could have been the game
That would almost have been the game.
4th down
Luck now has more passing yards than Smith.
A huge completion to TY Hilton
did the Chiefs turn it over on downs, or punt?
got to 4th, so punt.
Chiefs are looking weak at cornerback
Colts should just keep running it down the left and then throw over the top.
Although they'll need more distance to throw for that obviously.
Too far away for a QB-keeper?
Ridiculous. Fumble - recovery - TD
WOW, just wow!
YES! WHAT A PLAY!
Holy...
What an interesting game.
Hi Kai
hey! What a time to join.
Amazing skills by Luck.
Great presence of mind.
It didn't look very interesting at half time but now anything could happen
Despite all those picks, Luck and Smith are tied on fantasy points.
I have/had JC and the KC Defense. harumph.
I had the KC defence for most of the season but I ditched them for the playoffs
Chiefs D with 8 points isn't awful, but then they might not be around next week (at this rate)
Would be a good thing for the health of all of their hurt players, but bad in every other way for them.
If the Colts hold the Chiefs to a FG, then score a TD, that'll be the lead.
1 point for JC.
That's the #2 RB who's down.
3rd and long - Smith looks dejected.
I want a punt, then an Indy FG, then OT. Although they won't like that in Philly.
Does the KO get pushed back during the playoffs?
I think so.
He got the 7 and another 20
yes. They're both on NBC.
That'll do it. :)
Presumably Fox have tomorrow's?
Timeouts getting burnt
Yes
CBS have game 1 and Fox game 2
CBS/Fox have all next weekend's games
CBS has Chargers and Bengals at 1:00 EST
Fox has Packers and 9ers at 4:30EST
Actually CBS/Fox have every other game except the Pro Bowl which is on NBC
May as well be on Nickelodeon.
Well, OT is off now, tbh
Miss the Xpt? Fail the 2pter? I agree, unlikely.
Working from the premise that, occasionally, unexplained accidents happen, and these should be ignored, OT is off.
If they keep going at this rate the Chiefs may have no players left next week
Is this due to strong tackling by the Colts, bad luck or fatigue by the KC players?
I haven't seen anything untoward from the Colts
Me neither, and only 60 snaps too. Chiefs have snapped 72 times.
TD Colts
WOOOOOOW
Like I said, throw it over the top and you've done 'em.
Colts lead, Colts lead
Didn't expect to be saying that.
THe only problem with that is there is still a lot of time on the clock
I didn't mean they were doing anything wrong, just tackling well.
Yes. And if anyone can wipe the time off, it's Alex Smith.
That is my issue, but then the way the Colts' D has been playing this half, that isn't as bad as it could be
Some of the injuries have happened when there is no obvious cause.
20/22 KC starters supposedly had a week off last week.
A TD and XP would tie record for most points in a playoff game.
But they would need the two point conversion if there was time left.
So this all just sucks, then. :S
3rd and 17 then.
Although, if that failed, they'd lead by 5. But I'd still risk it. More likely to work than a failed PAT.
Remember when I said they should go for it on 4th and goal on the 2? Mmm. Importnat now.
That's incompetent.
What? I was getting Stollen.
OOB
ooBowe
Reid took a TO straight after the 2:00 warning.
He was poor with timeouts in Phily
-3 on turnovers and they win. Not one and done. WOW.
I still can't believe KC lost
Luck has the most 4th quarter comes backs in his first 2 years than any other QB.
Jay Feely telling everyone he'd kick it. Although he's biased, he's got a point. Compare 4th & 11 vs 61-yard attempt?
Just woke up in time to see the 4th quarter. WOW.
News to me.
What a finish. A mess for KC.
IIRC - he has 10, I think that's the most, if not it's close.
Of course, my Power Rankings predicted the Colts would win.
Kansas City Chumps
ESPN says it's the second largest comeback in NFL postseason history.
Bills came from 32 points in 1993.
THe thing is they were worse than the points difference suggested. Colts were just giving the ball away
That was a great start to the playoffs.
People talking about the possibility of Luck vs. Peyton...
Second-highest playoff game in NFL history.
*scoring
Bengals win tomorrow, then yes
One of those stories custom-made for NFL Films, no doubt.
Next game fact: Brees and Foles went to the same high school.
You can imagine what the film would be like if the COlts won the superbowl
It's 26F/-3C in Philly right now. I'm glad they didn't play last night in the righteous cold we had.
Right, game 2: pick you winner!
*your
Saints
Will say Philly. Homefield advantage bigger than usual given the weather.
They have had hundreds of people clearing snow from the field and the grandstands today
Philly for me as well.
I love Reinebold's Xs and Os segments.
My Power Rankings picked Philly to win.
It also picked this as the closest game.
For the Colts:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NV6Rdv1a3I
I just hope it's a good game. I'm a new fan of LeSean McCoy, so I'd like to see him do well, and the weather favors Philly. I can get behind either team to move on. No clear favorite for me.
NO-Philly? After what we just saw??
why y'all commenting nfl on a sat/sun evening?
(asking for a friend, obvs)
Playoffs :D
Playoff games - two tonight, two tomorrow. It's 6pm and 9pm or so tomorrow.
We're playing two hand touch in the backyard. We couldn't wait until tomorrow.
ahh, does that mean, no more to watch on C4?
We invited some very large friends over, too.
:) :) :)
Super Bowl will be on C4
:D
I'm Nick Foles.
Same again next week. 2 games Saturday, 2 Sunday.
You just missed an amazing game
BTW
Hands up everyone who got a mention in the editorial in this month's Motor Sport?
Just me then
tell me you were created as "the steven roy from the podcasts"?
*credited
what for?
Sadly not. I have spent years on the internet giving arguments, points of view etc on F! and I make it into a magazine for arithmetic.
Damien Smith quoted a tweet saying that the only change double points would have made last season was to tenth place in the championships
amazing.
For doing maths, I love it
The editorial was on the subject of the proposals for double points, fixed driver numbers etc and quoted a few tweets
Can't argue with arithmetic, I suppose. Frame it!!
For all these years I have been trying to provoke discussion and now I have found out that counting is the way to the press
So many people can't do it or can't be bothered ;) It works for me as well.
I might if it was for something profound I had said or for something I had predicted but not for arithmetic
Maybe they should have double points for every race? Makes the maths simpler.
THey already give 2.5X the points
omg! they really did (just bought it). well done sir.
I'm reeling in the bite ;-)
Oooooooo
You didn't go and buy it just because I got a mention. That is crazy
Did the Colts punt at all tonight?
I wonder if I can get commission on extra sales
I said I would go to bed after the first game, now I might just watch the first drive for each side.
Is the NowTV pass safe now, do you think? Mustn't miss the end of the Packers game tomorrow.
I don't remember them doing so
i sometimes buy it, that and grand prix+ are the only two f1 mags that are legible on the ipad mini.
Should be reasonably safe
safe?
I have bought the last couple of issues of F1 Racing since I found Stuart was deputy editor
30 minutes more and you'll be very safe
it lasts 24 hours. I need to know the last game will be finished 24 hours from activation. Because the last game is the biggie :-)
Colts punted once for 45 yards according to Game Centre stats
i can buy that on christine's ipad, but then i have to borrow it. on the plus side, free f1 racing :)
Colts: 1 punt = 45 yarder
ahhh.
Yeah, I'm not paying £20 for one week.
Anyway, have some errands to do, so might just drop in and out of this one. :) Enjoy!
lurker!
The first game had 1,049 total yards - playoff record.
And 58 first downs - that's huge.
If this is as good as the last one you will regret it
Ok - I'm going to have to go to bed, which really just means switching to a TuneIn radio stream.
Good night
laters sir.
Night all.
Right, pass paid for, will just wait a few minutes to activate
I'll be mad if I miss the end of the Packers game tomorrow.
what device are ya watching it on?
I have choice of PC, iPad and Xbox.
I was thinking about getting a NowTV box.
awesome!
can't say enough good things about them. i'd buy two if sky didn't limit users to four devices. xbox is probs just as good mind you.
Sky Go limit you to two, or at least used to. Was a real pain when I had the onlnie only sub - one had to be PC; if I was at home, I'd want to use Xbox, but then couldn't use iPad if not at home. I had to plan my devices around holidays. Ridic!
Also, could you not just use two accounts, or is that too much hassle?
Sky are very kindly sending me one of their wireless connectors for free
http://www.sky.com/products/kit/on-demand-connector/
Interception on the 2 yard line
Woohoo!
it'd cost twice as much? not a problem for daily sport, but for the monthly entertainment pack that's just wasted money.
yay for on demand!
Whooop, finally found a local station that's not geo-locked, there's always one.
NowTV is on :-) But of course I'm now a minute behind :(
it's a bit of a pain, i normally queue comments until a play has finished.
4:19 left in the quarter
Tell me when it hits 3:30.
NOW
That was right on the second
I'm at 3:30… NOW
51 second delay
Minus 4 seconds where Chrome couldn't decide whether to send the comment or not.
Al Michaels is my favourite commentator.
It's not been a pad start, but it feels flat after the mad first game.
Foles stood there for ages trying to find an open receiver. The sack was inevitable
Anything was going to be an anti-climax after that
That was an awful kick. From the moment you heard the noise from the boot, you knew it was going nowhere near.
Maybe this is going to be the lowest scoring playoff game ever
Less than 5 wins the record.
Philly ball?
No, on second look, he's down.
He's down
Down by contact it is. No idea why that took so long when it looked obvious on the first replay
Spotting the ball and setting the clock.
THe bean bag should have been thrown to mark the spot whether it was a turnover or not
True, but does anyone really believe the beanbag is ever thrown that accurately?
Sometimes it is really accurate. I know before ball bearings were banned as a filling one was thrown so accurately it hit the ball carrier in the eye
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Triplette#Officiating_career
Right, I need to sleep. Will catch up on this game tomorrow. But will be around for tomorrow's games.
Good night
That radio silence from me was brought to you by Idris Elba's episode 1 of King of Speed that I just found online.
Shift change.
What did you make of it?
I liked it, but I'm biased because I love him so much.
I was quite disappointed at how little he drove. He talked a big game but did very little.
Second episode is much better
The nascar stuff wasn't just ok. The country bumpkin history of racing in this country puts me off, but it is the history of how that racing started. I just find nascar pretty embarrassing.
Yeah.
*was just ok
When he was talking to those street racers about bets then didn't deliver I thought he is going to be hopeless. Also why drive to all these places lying on a bed?
TD Eagles
Looks like your weather may get even worse
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-25609411
His trash talking is embarrassing to me, too. Makes him look weak trying to impress those guys. I grew up around that with my dad drag racing. My dad didn't like the trash talking and didn't do much. I guess that's where my distaste for it came from. He let his driving do the talking...and mostly won. ;)
I knew your dad raced but I didn't know that he won a lot
Great pass by Brees
oof. Sack.
Yep. He was really good in the first part of his career at Dover Drag Strip in Wingdale, NY, then when my sister and I got older he did well later. He raced brackets. Tons of trophies. We ran out of room for them all.
What are brackets?
Each driver predicts the time it'll take to do the 1/4 mile track. Whoever comes closer to that time without going over wins.
The trophy is the prize. No money.
46 yd FG attempt
OK. I have heard of that. Seems almost counter-intuitive to not go as fast as you can but I guess the skill is balancing what your car is capable of and driving to a percentage of that and not exceeding it
It's good. 7-6 Philly.
Made the FG just
It takes knowing the car, how the weather is affecting it, the track surface, your reaction time, and if you should get off the gas before the end...if you're ahead of the guy.
The last part must be weird. I am blowing away the other guy but I need to lift or I will beat him by too much
If you 'break out' and go over you lose anyway even if you beat him over the line, so you gotta be smart about it.
Drag racing always seemed to me like way too much work for way too little racing
Yeah. My dad loved it and asked me if I wanted to do it. I suppose he would've given me his car in his will, in retrospect, but I never even wanted to try it. It didn't appeal to me. I was immersed in racing culture growing up, and I love that, but I wanted to turn corners. It was always road racing for me.
Bracket racing, FYI
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bracket_racing
It's one thing giving you the car but you need someone to keep it working. Especially when you need it to perform consistently to have any chance of hitting your time
True.
So what kind of car did he race?
A Barracuda in the 60's and 1969 Road Runner in his second stint.
Even I have heard of the Barracuda. What kind of times did he run?
Another intentional grounding
I don't remember his times. :( He had a bored out 383 in the Plymouth Road Runner IIRC.
Sounds like a proper muscle car
It was. We could only start it up at home when we knew the neighbors would be okay with the noise. :)
Nice run by Ingram.

TD New Orleans
I remember the first time I started up my Formula Ford. I had just bought it and was 'borrowing' a mate's garage. 3 of us spent two hours trying to start the engine before we realised the fuel tank was empty. None of us were mechanical geniuses.
We eventually got it started around 8 pm and my mate was in the car playing with the throttle. The next door neighbour came out and was most upset as he had just got his two kids to sleep.
I can only imagine how much louder your dad's car would have been
This is going to be a close game all the way
Riley Cooper caught and dropped. Big mistake
:)
This guy is a dope for frying his tires like this in a neighborhood, but at least you can hear what my dad's car sounded like. He'd never waste money like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTuqyTyS_bU
That is what a muscle car should sound like
My job was to sit in it and drive. Making the engine work was someone else's job
Colllinsworth always looks so awkward when they show the announcers in the booth. hehe
You would think that he would be used to being on TV by now
I really like his commentary. Maybe he just doesn't care what he looks like.
Better than the guys that care too much.
Definitely
Some really good passes from Brees
He was -1 a while ago for me, now he's up to +7 fantasy points.
Sproles is a sprite, isn't he? 5'7"? Brave.
TD Saints. Their running game is decent tonight.
15 carries for 91 yds for Ingram.
I like a nice mix of running and passing
Too bad I have Graham instead. haha
It's amazing the range of heights of players who can play similar position
I would have chosen Graham too
Lewis is hurt. Not sure what happened but he grabbed the front of his helmet.
Eagles have only about half the total offence yardage of the Saints. Didn't expect that. When McCoy has less than 50 yards this late in the game you know they are in trouble
Sweeting is in for him.
Looked like helmet to helmet on the tackle
WOW!!!
Great throw and catch
Could've been. Or helmet to shoulder. Either way, he was groggy when he got up.
Go for it
Good choice - TD Eagles.
TD Eagles
I said they needed more McCoy
13 points of a gap seems huge. 6 not so much
20-14 Saints with :32 left in the 3rd.
I was starting to think that my prediction of a Saints win was looking safe. Not any more
I love the playoffs bc we just don't know.
End of the 3rd and still wide open. Perfect
You didn't tell me about the traffic in New York. It's a bit different to here
http://t.co/uTf4fTevSq
"where we're going... err, we might actually need roads"
:D
People I've known who have trained as pilots told me about looking for highways to land on in case of emergency.
It seems a logical place to land in an emergency. Here he would probably get a speeding fine
Eagles have to settle for a FG.
Flag on the play
False start
For all the talk about the Saints and their road record, the weather doesn't seem like a factor at all.
It doesn't look as cold as I expected.
Dry and no wind for them. that's good.
Missed on 3rd and 4.
Have to go for the field goal
Saints stopped too. Trying for a FG.
23-17 Saints with about 7:40 to go in the 4th.
Celek going off hurt
The Cooper chant sounds a lot like when the Cowboy fans used to chant Moose
yeah.

The kicker is playing for his ninth team. Do you really want your playoff future to depend on someone who has not made it at 8 other teams?
This is his chance to redeem himself.
C'mon Shayne. You've been everywhere. Make this count.
:03 left in the game. This is it.
Yep. They do it. Saints win 26-24.
Made it. It's weird when a team wins a game and the crowd goes totally silent
Today was a great first day of the playoffs. To fascinating but totally different games
yeah. It seemed like even the mic levels were like "wha?" when it went so quiet.
It is now a few hours past my bedtime and I have loads I need to do tomorrow.
So good night from me.
Good night. More tomorrow.
The Saints win means no Hawks-'9ers game possible next week, but sets them up for a meeting in the NFC championship (wins permitting).
feel for the Kansas city fans, geez I thought it was only the dallas cowboys that could lose games that way, makes sense though the chiefs started out as the dallas texans before moving to Kansas so maybe its a dallas curse type thing. great game though.
glad the eagles are gone. cant stand them, new orleans will have a tough game next week in seattle though.
of tomorrows games, both could go either way, the bengals in a close one over the chargers, and im thinking the 49ers will be too good for green bay but with Rodgers anything is possible.
Evening all. Bengals just choice to receive in the 2nd half.
The rather petit Danny Woodhead to return KOs for San Diego today.
Bengals' rush are making hay, so Chargers ended up punting.
Ooooo, now the Bengals are forced to punt.
Hi Will^ and the lurkers
Hey Steven
That sounds like a band name.
We must be due 1% of their lifetime earning for supplying the name then
1% of nothing won't pay many bills.
Looks like their is a Charger injury
Nick Hardwick, the veteran Centre.
Having to use a backup Centre would be a big loss for anyone - weakens the protection through the A-gaps, increases the chances of mistakes on the snap, and the Centre often marshals the OLine's protections. Although it seems ok so far...
I have seen games turn completely round when a centre has to be replaced
It happened to the Charger earlier in the year against the Broncos - they were up, then it fell to pieces.
Ooopsy. Rivers isn't as good at improv as Luck.
BOOM! TD Chargers.
I was going to tip the Chargers before the game started
I had been all week thinking the Bengals would win, but hoping otherwise, but just before KO I changed my pick to the Chargers :)
I just checked the Chargers depth chart and they have Woodhead listed as 5' 8" and 200 pounds. Must be the slimmest 14 stone 5'8" I have ever seen
I'm here, having sorted a NowTV issue.
He must be incredibly dense - which might explain why DBs have such a hard time slowing his momentum.
Either that or 50 of the pounds are there to make him sound heavier
Maybe his hair is made out of lead.
His head is made of timber.
Accurate.
I can't argue with that
Poor throw = 4th down.
Jeff Triplette is the ref who hit someone in the eye with a beanbag full of ball bearings
Didn't his crew also balls up a call in a Bengals game in early December?
Yep. The week after he screwe up at the Redskins-Giants game
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Triplette#Officiating_career
I don't get the point of the Pro Bowl not being played in conferences
Oooo errrr. Let's see how this plays out.
It sounds quite fun, that 2 ex-stars are drafting their squads from the voted-for pool.
Also this: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/05/jeff-triplette-returns-to-cincinnati-scene-of-a-major-blunder/
That's what I wast thinking of. But Ed Hochuli is the ref later!
But what's going to make the players play any harder?
I agree that is a big issue, and the draft doesn't solve that.
Nothing is going to make the players treat it like a competitive game
I love it when the grind out the yards like a rugby team
One alternative I've heard is to take the 2 worst teams, and have them play the wooden-spoon bowl, winner gets the 1st pick in the Draft.
TD Bengals
Play hard enough and you lose your job to a college kid?
Hmmm, true... Play hard enough and give your Franchise the best chance of succeeding next year.
Sounds like a worse idea the more I think about it.
Besides who wants to finish the season watching the worst teams. I like the idea of the Pro Bowl being an all star game but that doesn't work now that players from superbowl teams can't play
I do like the idea of an all-star team, but they don't seem to take it seriously any more.
It's a bit awkward when they mention OJ Simpson on the NFL coverage.
More or less awkward when they are forced to mention all the pieces NE have lost between last season and this?
Players come, players go.That's NE. Problem will be when Brady goes.
Bad challenge.
I was meaning any mentions of Hernandez (allegedly).
Catch.
I don't understand the challenge because it always looked good
Jeff Triplette submitting the whole match report at once in an effort to look competent.
Maybe someone in the stands is transcribing it for him
Urgh.
Great catch
Ah, two minute warning. Choosing what kind of bread to stick in the machine tonight. Half time is for putting it all on.
Fumble
Humping tackle, that.
He made a football move.
Almost took his arms off with the ball
I don't really think that's close at all.
Securing the ball in his hands and turning looks like a football move
Full speed I would have said he didn't have possession but on the so mo he definitely had control
He made a move, Butler smacked the ball out. Easy decision.
If it was outside two minutes, you would challenge. But you'd lose.
Will this be the blown call?
nope
He gets two in the playofs.
I thought the Bengals were offside there.
Great defence there.
Hang on, they're trying to review a play after another has gone off?
If they are reviewing, what happens to the spike?
Don't think they are allowed to do that!?
That has happened quite a few times this season. They are making up the rules as they go like Bernie
They are not
Officiating craziness.
So they'd reset the clock and erase that spike?
Yes
In that case the whistle should have been blown at the point forward progress stopped
The clock is still at 2 seconds not 12 or 13.
...Should have reset the clock and allowed them to rerun the spike.
No, you set the clock to whenever the call to review was made, but ONLY IF the whistle is blown BEFORE the spike snap. Otherwise, you can't review. I think the latter happened.
Looks like another Triplette screw up. Clearly he only thought about forward progress after viewing the replay. There should not have been a review after the spike and if he was going to do that the clock should have been reset
...ok.
But they wiped the spike off, so they're claiming the snap happened after the whistle.
Ahh yes, got you, that makes sense.
I think he was a little bit optimistic to think he wasn't touched
If we learnt anything from week 17, it's play to the whistle.
Absolutely
So I don't fault him too much, it's not like he ran off after the refs had killed the play.
They are giving Rivers far too much time
The Chargers are unleashing Rivers

Yep, just started here too.
We had it pass over a bit back.
Interception
He did what It thought hew as going to do one play before.
it's almost as if the Bengals' and Chargers' Ds have swapped places.
Even after resetting the game clock, it was wrong. THey put 23 on instead of 28.
I don't understand why the QB would come back with the ball in that position. Let the RB come to him and the worst you get is 4th and 1
Looks like the Lambeau grass has emigrated

Another interception. That could be the game
And 15 yards of insult added to the injury

Bengals have been woeful this half.
Who led at halftime in the Saints game?
All three teams leading at halftime have lost.
Next week
Colts @ Pats
Chargers @ Broncos
There is no grass at all on Lambeau Field
That was another brilliant game :D
That may be a little bit of an overstatement
I am going for the 49ers in the next one
The remaining AFC teams are the Broncos, and 3 teams that have beaten the Broncos this season.
I was saying that with a fan's hat on, not a shade on yesterday's 1st match.
I've gone for the '9ers.
Hadn't realised that
Sorry about sporadic comments - on iPad :-(
I hate the difficulty of multitasking on iPad when it comes to comments
But good news for FantasyF1 players, I've got some nice stats working in the break between games :-)
It's ok, I've been intermittently juggling a child and a cat.
I was considering not watching this one as I'm back in work tomorrow, but as that's only at 4, I'm in.
I'm watching this until the end, or when the winner is decided,
need surface's side-by-side apps. apple have to fix that this year.
There's a great vintage tint on the field today
Ok, here we go.
Yes, NEED. That's easily the best feature, followed by tactile keyboard.
Evening :)
Hi Mr C and Kai
howdy, just lurking as usual.
Greetings, one and all.
SPC really has no better analogy than being the back room of your house :-)
:)
someone came up with a decent pub analogy once. wonder if i can find it.
I always imagine that you have a screen on the wall that just displays the /comments screen, so you can see if anything is happening on your website.
It's 5F/-15C in Green Bay now.
we really need that. one day for certain!
ah-ha! http://sidepodcastdaily.com/post/daily-7th-august-2009#comment-428335
Clearly not grass growing weather
That is a seriously low temperature. I'd only be out in full snowboard gear.
Like some places have a tweet-wall, you'd have a /comments wall.
Hard to think the Packers are without Clay Matthews.
Frank Gore has no idea what is going on right now.
Kaep comes through on 4th
That looked like the two defenders stuck with the same man as Crabtree ran between them
I spotted some with skiing goggles on
Sounds like they have the right idea
Only problem was he was wearing them on top of his head
49ers just couldn't get a receiver open anywhere
Good D for GB
'9ers RedZone offence seems to have not been put on the plane.
...in the endzone.
Kaepernick really needs to have more to offer than a run to the right and desperately hoping for a guy to be open on the front pylon.
Frozen cheesehead
Shields off on the cart
And Mike Neal LB
What was that shout in the middle of second down?
Red 18 rrddtt
Replayed it and that is as close as I can get
Fair enough, it was just because the shout was in the middle of the play. BTW, terrible punt. Just too cold?
I went back and checked. The call I posted is just before the snap. After the snap it sounds like turn turn
Why does Kaepernick need to have his plays on a wrist band. He already has enough ink on his arms to incorporate them all
So close to a delay of game
Lang with great reactions there.
At this rate the '9ers will have rebroken Rodgers' collarbone before he completes a pass.
Two sacks from three dropbacks.
Not good.
30 seconds to go in the 1st quarter and he has not completed a pass. Wouldn't have believed
Protection has been awful.
But it's ok for the Packers, as so far in these playoffs the teams who've lead at HT have all lost.
It's their only hope right now, from the looks of it.
There have been big turnarounds in recent games and for all their dominace SF only have 6 points
All it takes is one big Lacy break-though (esp as Rodgers isn't doing much in the air)
Hopefully the Packers can neutralize the SF defense and actually complete a pass or two.
That will do!
Interception. That should bring the crowd into the game
I knew that would be an interception. All I could hear was "tick, tick, tick" on the thread - it had to be!
#SidePodPlayPredictor
Maybe Green Bay can take a sneaky lead?
Every twist and turn Lacy makes is worth at least two inches.
First down!
A completed pass :O
2 completed passes :O
and to my fantasy player. Things are looking up.
Rodgers' rating is now well above Kaepernick's
Speaking of fantasy, I scored 3pts this week, and AJ Green is out of it.
Maybe so but he has 24 passing yards against 108
I got 1
I have none
I know, it's only because of the pick :-)
Only 1?! Was that JC?
Yes
Wait, no. I have 8 points, from 3 players, from 3 different teams, who all lost.
Scared that was going to be picked off.
c'mon Green Bay.
Lacy missed an opening on the left there. Thought he was going for it for a little bit.
TD Jordy Nelson
WOOO!
TD Pack
Could this lead be any less justified? Probably not. Still, shows what happens when you stall in the redzone and then throw a pick.
Bad stuff.
If they can hold it for 6 minutes they should lose
Kaep ran about 50 yards there
42 not 50
Davis had a huge opening also - where was the D?
No point stopping passes if you let the Qb run half the length of the field
Gore with the score
TD Gore
Green Bay's offence and defence swapped places.

Quick Gerry clearly didn't work
Some real crunching blows when they hit the ground today. Brutal surface.
How cold is it in Green Bay?

Based on the halftime scores, 49ers' to lose.
Wait, I mean 49ers to lose. Apostrophe important there.
haha. Wow.
Beer freezingly cold
pourmecoffee @pourmecoffee 1m
At halftime, Packers get full transfusions replacing their blood with cheese making them more powerful than you could possibly imagine.
It confuses me every time I hear them say Fangio
stuff of nightmares.
Timeout wasted, ALREADY?!
They used two in the first six minutes of the first quarter.
Will we see them really needing that back as the game gets critical
Good thing for Daniels or he would've had some room to run.
Should have made that catch but you are never going to catch a ball with your facemask
If this is true it has to be the worst reason ever to burn a time out
Joe Browne @NFLonTheHill
Don't think Kaepernick came on field in 3rd Q w/ his play-calling card on his arm. When he realized it, he had to call Timeout.
Now we know where the grass went
https://twitter.com/StoningtonCTRE/status/419969714152947712
I thought that's what I saw, but wasn't sure. Dope.
He doesn't even know 1 play to call it off the top of his head?!
I go back to my earlier comment. He has enough ink on his arms to put a few plays in the tattoos
Problem is, if he's leading a drive, he needs a lot of plays.
Too easy to photograph
Is there no other way for him to get it from the sideline after that one play? He needed a timeout right then?
Pretty sure that's a joke. :)
Any substitute could bring it on
Well, if someone else is calling the plays, probably. Remember, he's still a young QB.
Exactly.
Only pretty sure?
I know. I hope it doesn't come back to bite him later. That's just irresponsible and he can't do that in the playoffs. Hopefully it doesn't matter. I like him a lot. That was just a bad move.
Nope. The NFL are crazy protective about their plays.
Steven was making a joke.
He should know all the plays and be able to get them signalled into him if necessary.
I remember an interview with someone at the Colts a few years ago. He was asked what made Manning special. He went on to tell about Manning going through every play in the book with new players. He would go through play after player asking what they should do different if such and such happened. He expected all the relevant players to not only know every play but to know what to do in almost any situation.
Ah, thought you were saying I was joking. Yes, I realised it was a joke :-)
oh good. I couldn't tell. :)
Only problem with that is that the 49ers' OC generally calls from the boxes, rather than the sidelines, so Harhaugh would have to call the play.
If they need to get a play in normally either that has to happen or a substitute has to deliver it
Another time out blown because of a misunderstanding
2°F / -12°F wind chill
Rodgers sacked.
Another sack of Rodgers.
2 sacks in a row
ouchy.
now 3rd and 22
Just got the play off before the play clock ran out. Very risky pass
Game finishing before 0130 looks like a good bet.
Still a very close game. Could go to O/T
Just thinking of Noelinho's NowTV.
Which is what all of the close-to-frozen fans would want... haha
I am sure they won't mind as long as the Packers win and they don't get hypothermia
It has to finish by 1:40, so it'll be fine.
Don't lose too many fingers, toes or beers.
Bruising run
At least you can drop your beer in that weather.
True! And still have it later on. It'll be cold.
If that was a 1st down it was by a millimetre
the leather on that ball couldn't've been any thinner
players leaning on the guy holding the stick? :)
The last 4 superbowl winners played in Philladelphia's home opener. This year the team that did that was the Chargers
It's still alive, but I'm not putting money on that.
Sky commentator said that streak ends now
99 doing a little ballet on the line. :D
I can't see the Chargers winning 3 more, maybe beating the Broncos (again), but it's too soon for a deep playoff run for them.
WOW!
WOW indeed
Amazing he got away.
Pretty sweet play in the end.

He slipped on his way to the leap.

Please, no OT tonight. I have work in the morning.
Rodgers found himself all day in the pocket
Rodgers making people miss like England penalty takers.
"All of them" & "embarrassingly so"
This ties the game and increases the chance of O/T
I'm tempted to say that generally does, but I know what you mean :-)
I do like the look of those capes/cloaks the climb into while on the sidelines.
Yeah. They look cool. Like superheroes. :) I hope they've been kept in a heater of some kind so they're toasty.
They should have heaters built into them
I'm half expecting them to have electric blankets stitched into the liner.
That was a game chance.
Good idea. Hope so.
player warmers!

A quick Google suggests that nowhere has thought of putting heaters in the capes :(
There is a list of sidepodcast inventions somewhere. This belongs on that list
Great run by Kaep. Should never have been allowed to get that far

SF win
I'm sad for Green Bay, but SF played well. Good on them.
So much for home advantage
I picked SF so I'm pleased, but I do like the way the Pack play, esp now they have a running attack.
Only the Colts upheld home advantage?
Green Bay would have been mashed at Candlestick. They're nowhere near as good.
Would have been nice if the last game at the stick was a playoff
yes, would have been great
The mistake that mattered was letting Kaep run for 10 yards on the last drive
It can still happen. The NFC Champs game will be at the Stick if the '9ers and Saints win next weekend
and SF wins with a last second FG. *the crowd goes wild*
Won't happen!
one way to bring the (old) house down
49ers winning to go to the superbowl would be a great way to close it.
ahaha. Love your crystal ball of certainty.
Very true. But it is still possible.
I can't see it either
No point sitting on the fence.
That's what I love about the playoffs. Weird things can happen. Most of what I read this week didn't happen.
Kaepernick. It's not that cold out there.
I don't believe him
San Fran at Carolina, Seattle host NO, right?
Yup.
Charger @ Broncos
Colts @ Pats
In a lot of cases one play can turn a game. That and how people cope with pressure can turn a game upside down
Cracking games. Not a bad game next week.
Divisional round is my favourite weekend of NFL (excluding Super Bowl Sunday)
Kaep says it's not that cold.
Navorro Bowman says It' Freezing
He also asked the reporter to make it quick, so...
That was a really good first weekend of the playoffs. Not a single blow out and every game had something different
Yeah. Good games. That's what I love most. And Downton Abbey US premiere is tonight! #eclectic
Bed time. Night all.
Till next Saturday.
Good night, guys.
