Our first baseball game of the season sees the New York Yankees visit Fenway Park to take on the Boston Red Sox. The season is only two weeks old and the teams have only played around a dozen of the 162 games that make up the regular season. So we don't have any clear idea yet of the kind of season the teams will have. This is the biggest rivalry in baseball so you can guarantee that both teams will be determined to get the upper hand. Like most sports it is easy to grasp the basics of baseball but the subtleties can take a lifetime to understand. If you are new to the game we will do our best to keep you right.

Just discovered the game is on ESPN America. Looks like I need to look at the cost of adding more channels
hey chap, i haven't forgotten. just multitasking
Hey Mr C
I think the first pitch is not for 20 minutes yet
aces. just fighting some tech here. brb.
I have images of Mr C engaging in a battle with cyborgs.
Hello btw. :)
Turns out today is the 100th anniversary of the opening of Fenway Park. I had no idea. Lots of Red Sox greats on the field
Hi Mark.
What's happening here, apart from the sheer awesome of FDR being toasted?
100th anniversary of Fenway Park
Well, many happy returns to it.
hey ya!
I knows all about baseball now. I seen Brad Pitt do it. I assume he will be there somewhere.
I am so pleased you are here. We need a real expert
GO SOX!!
i recognise fenway from the film.
Who's Fenway?
oooh, who am i supporting?
The game is delayed?
The stadium- Fenway Park
Let's see, who do I want to lose...
You have one baseball shirt. Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees.
omg! i should put it on.
Well, one of the teams appears not to be able to spell socks, so not them.
Don't touch it! It's EEEEVIL!!!
Yankees are not evil. Yankees are awesome even of they have reverted to being the NY Highlanders for this game
Fenway Park looks awesome. #HeavyAnalysis
If anyone hasn't tried it I highly recommend the gameday live data feed
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2012_04_20_nyamlb_bosmlb_1&mode=gameday
Yankees are like the Man U of the MLB.
Man U are evil
It's very green.
And thus my argument has come full circle. :D
Environmentally friendly then. ;)
Three of them under the ball and still it is dropped. Go Jeter
Do they have Wimbledon type issues at the end of the year when all the grass is worn out?
Not really because the field is a huge area and they are not running up and down the same lines all the time
Ugh, I've actually opened the feed now.
I'm supposed to be working!!
On...something....
Why does it say YES in the corner? It's very positive.
hows it going ?? theres something quite old fashioned about baseball isn't there ??
TV Company
hey chappie. old fashioned?
Plus they have cut them little orange walkways.
They are wearing the uniforms they wore a hundred years ago today when the ballpark opened
well, their "uniforms" ... could be 60 years ago if you take a photo...
Can we have a compilation of Christine quotes after the game? :)
ah i see now... what do the normal ones look like then ?
That's where they run in straight lines all the time so grass would get trashed there
Not massively different
I just say what I see :)
My only previous experience of baseball is Bull Durham, which is probably useless for this match.
Who did Babe Ruth play for 100 years ago?
.., thats why I got confused probably then..
ooooooh!
See! We have history!
Red Sox. Then he left and became a Yankee great
They just put in lights on our stadium a couple weeks ago.
Who is pitching for the Sox?
Just looked up Ruth's wiki page. Only, *only*, 95% voted for him to go in the Hall of Fame. Anyone jealous at all?
Turns out he played for no-one a hundred years ago. Didn't join the Sox until 1914
I wasn't sure if he had or not. Still in the orphanage?
Buchholz
I always like it when the Yankees take an early lead
Can I start heckling? Think they will hear me?
It is essential to heckle when watching sport
If the Yankees only had Maldonaldo.
And do what? Run into the wall when he rounds third base?
Yeah Big Papi!
Their little "this is what it looked like 100 years ago" trick had to end quite quickly, because of the Burger King sponsorship that appeared on screen.
Works for me!
radar gun readings?
Pitch speed
SPEED!!!
that guy was show boating catching that one!
I wonder who would have advertised 100 years ago
Burger Squire
Woodrow Wilson?
:)
Surely presidents never paid for ads at baseball
Yeah! I got Alonso points.
Maybe.
You never know...
Back then behind the home plate it said, RedSox.AM
That was funnier in my head.
Hehe!
madness. but i like it.
meh
right. undivided attention. what have i missed.
Nice catch. I thought when he hit it that it was going to be a home run
Weirdest. Advert. Ever.
Yankees batted first and scored one run - Derek Jeter.
Red Sox just finished batting and didn't score although it looked like they might.
Now they are going to repeat that 8 times
awesome. ta.
I know. Repeating lyrics is what we do
Does everyone understand strikes and balls?
We have a new gourmet hot dog place opening up near by work. This makes me want a hot dog. Steven, get me a hot dog?
Yes!
HOW many turned up on an off-day? 54k people??
I think you are probably a little closer to Fenway than me. About 3000 miles closer
Wait, where are you?
Scotland
Home run over the green monster
Is a strike when they miss it? Like the opposite of ten pin bowling.
There's a monster???
It eats spectators.
I'm closer, but only by about 400 Miles or so. Interestingly enough, I can get on the highway here headed east and it will take me right to Boston without having to change highways at all.
Has one eye, one arm, and flies.
nice!
@Christine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Monster
Picture a zone above home plate(the white box 'plate' in front of the batter) that goes from the batter's knees to his chest. If the pitch goes through that zone it is a strike. If it doesn't it's a ball. 4 balls and the batter gets a free walk to first base. And as I am sure you know three strikes and he is out
huh!
So, when people get a home run do the fans consider that to be great hitting or bad throwing?
Depends on if you are cheering for the team that hits it or not.
If the batter swings at a pitch it is a strike regardless where the pitch is.
If the batter has 2 strikes, connects with the ball but it goes foul (doesn't stay in the field between the baselines) then it doesn't count against him.
Steven I want a pizza now.
I wonder who put the 1912 prices feature together and when they were looking for interesting items chose mattresses
I did wonder why there didn't seem to be much hitting going on.
I guess. Just curious, because people say in football penalties the pressure is on the kicker not the goalie, and this is one on one like that.
I was trying to be silly. It depends on the pitch I guess. There is also the whole psychology (strategy) behind how you pitch to different batters.
Is baseball a batters' or pitchers' game? averages of about a quarter to a third suggest pitchers.
I am so glad we are seeing some hits and runs in this game. The first one we live commented was deadly dull
Accepted wisdom is that pitching wins matches
everyone seems so much more relaxed during this one too.
It's early in the season I suppose
I think throughout the history of the game it changes. Mid 90s to 2000s I'd say it was batters with McGuire (sp?), Sosa, Bonds, et al. Now I think it has shifted to the pitchers.
Boring, Steven? Wait until we live comment the Wigan Bolton match in the Premier League.
Didn't Wigan just beat the Gunners?
So when the steroids level goes up the batters become more dominant
just seems like they're all very happy to be playing. i like it.
Ken Griffey Jr. was in that mix and never did steroids.
I am not available that day.
Yes
I need to change my license plates...sigh...
shush you with your facts overriding my crass generalisations.
Well I wish that weren't the case.
What kind of Red Sox fan would not catch that and guarantee a home run
someone who catches like me :)
"I'm telling you it was in my hand!"
And batting in sunglasses? Cool :)
There are loads of videos on youtube of people diving over high walls like that to catch a ball and falling 20 feet to the ground
HR! Big Papi!
Doesn't the monster wall give the Sox an advantage?
Not really. They have to deal with it 81 games a season
Fair point. As a leftie it suits me to hit to the crowd there though.
Sacrifice to get the man to 3rd.
He must of thought this was golf with that pitch.
Man, left a person in scoring position. Weak.
3-1 Yankees end of the 2nd
How long does a game last?
We are doing this momentarily: http://sidepodcast.com/event/recording-feet-up-friday-sidepodcast-live
We want to keep up to date with the game though, so relying on you lot to keep commenting here too :)
We are about a quarter of the way through the game so 3 hours ish
w00t! we'll include live baseball scores in FuF ;)
Yay, we'll be back for the end then.
curse of the bambino!
I just turned the sound on.
They are talking about some of the ex-Sox who turned up today and some of the history of Fenway
Swisher walks so the Yankees have two men on base
Buchholz has thrown 39 strikes and 20 balls
I'm not sure about calling them balls. He must have thrown lots of balls to get the strikes too.
Double play clears the bases. Yankees fail to score
It's not the clearest terminology. He has thrown pitches that are either strikes or balls. I find myself calling pitches balls all the time too
Was that a fan recording the stats for the game?
I think so. Certainly someone with a score card
There we go.
Sweeney gets a double for the Red Sox
Nerd.
That's pretty interesting.
End of the 3rd and Yankees still lead 3-1
Another home run. Chavez for the Yankees
Everyone who has hit the ball seems to have hit it out of the park
Fabulous catch
End of the 4th. Yankees now lead 4-1
Another home run !!! A-Rod this time
A-Rod is a tennis player. Baseball can't have him.
Sigh. ARod used to be a Mariner.
The tennis player stole the name. Baseball has had an A-Rod for about ten years
Oh, okay. You can have him then.
Bottom of the 5th. Time for the Red Sox to start scoring before it is too late
What does bases loaded mean?
There's a batter on them.
A runner is one 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, base.
Pitcher is in danger of being scored on. Lots.
Where did that come from? Are you just throwing out baseball terms you have heard?
Potatoes loaded means they have bacon, cheese, chives, and sourcream on them.
I think it might be the only baseball term I know and it just came to me :)
I was so busy playing with different browsers I thought maybe I had missed the Red Sox loading the bases.
Red Sox scored a run though so 5-2 Yankees
Potatoes loaded is much more interesting!
Yankees scored again and I missed it
How did I miss that. Red Sox catcher is called Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Great name
End of the 6th 6-2 Yankees
Pitching change for the Yankees. Cory Wade taking over for the bottom of the 7th
End of the 7th inning and it is still 6-2 Yankees
Nick Swisher hits a double.
Has anyone made a single today?
Didn't Jeter in the first?
Looks like a pitching change for the Red Sox
I think you are right. All the rest have been doubles or home runs
Justin Thomas now pitching
Back over on MBL. ;)
Great stream from vipbox tonight. Hasn't missed a beat
I thought that it was because I was on campus and not at home.
Ibanez makes a single
Runners at the corners.
Another pitching change for the Sox
say somebody had been indisposed for, erm, about an hour or so... what might that person have missed?
Quite a few home runs.
Score is now 6-2 Yankees. Yankes have a man on 1st and one on 3rd and the Red Sox need to get two Yankees out
ta.
It's time for... a sacrifice fly!
Sox did what they had to do. Yankees leave a man on third like the Sox did earlier
Sweet Caroline was written about Caroline Kennedy? Who knew
Sweet Caroline, Jackie's Strength, there's a lot of songs about them Kennedys.
Who sang the 7th inning stretch?
Didn't see/hear it
If it stays like this Mr. C will have delivered the final score on the podcast too.
Would that put him 1 up on Christine in the weekend's predictions
Huh. I just had a tour come through my office.
Thems be fighting words, Me Steven.
Hi everyone in Tundraland's province of Red Sox Nation.....
6 - 2 Yankees? Doesn't anything ever change at fenway.....
hey squire!
win!
So..I just logged onto badger to make predictions for this weekend... Has their motto always been, "Formula 1 isn't boring"
Hi Jordan. it's been a bit different. I think 6 of the runs scored in the game have been home runs
for as long as i can remember, certainly.
Huh. That's not quite a screaming endorsement.
bit defensive i guess. think it means "...and here's why."
i am loving these hundred year lookback clips. need this for every game. perfect for newbies.
Ah.
I'd almost be up for FBFBing one of these things if it didn't last a gazillion hours.
I love the way American sports respect their history
How about a hockey game? They are into the playoffs now.
Actual hockey? Or ice hockey? No one watches actual hockey, do they?
It's only three hours. Less than a GP with the pre and post shows
It's Fenway. The outfield wall is about 10 feet shorter from the plate down the lines and alleys.
Ice Hockey. I thought it was hockey.
Inside the Green Monster
A few of them went over the green monster. Sox got one that hit the padding at the top of the monster
i am loving these hundred year lookback clips. need this for every game. perfect for newbies.
It is the only ballpark that is 100 years old is running in the Majors....
Wait, is Fenway the House that Ruth built, or was that Yankees stadium?
Christine, I have a movie for you if you haven't seen it. Check out The Sandlot.
It'd make sense that people just shorten it to hockey, because no one actually watches normal hockey :)
That was Yankee stadium after the Sox got rid of him
it's a mini history lesson every ad-break.
I was in NYC back in March. Didn't go to a game...don't think the season had started anyways...
Going in to the bottom of the 9th. I guess it is Mariano time
Time to put on the rally caps.
Season only started a couple of weeks ago
Wait, is Fenway the House that Ruth built, or was that Yankees stadium?
That was Yankee stadium after the Sox got rid of him
Ruth as well as almost the entire so-called "Baseball's greatest team" of the 1929 Yankees - most of whom where the 1918 Red Sox....
Go figure. The Catcher had a crap year in 29 and the Babe had a so-so year....
Cody Eppley pitching for the Yankees. I don't understand that. This is the situation that Mariano Rivera is made for
That is a weird pitching action
Come on Sox! We got a guy on first!
If they lose this lead while Mariano is playing in the bullpen I will not be happy
That is a weird pitching action
He's called a "submarine" pitcher.
The half way to tying run.
Who's on first :)
What?
Never seen that before
Yay!
Who's on first :)
I don't know..... :P
I knew you would love that
Samuel L Jackson has an iPhone..
he's on second.
What's on 2nd
Steven Roy20/04/2012 at 23:29:04
He's called a "submarine" pitcher.
Never seen that before
Nothing compared to Dice-K's movment.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLprXHbn19I I like this one by them.
Good eye hbatter!
Nooooooo!
Mariano really is too good.
I read somewhere than when he first came into the league an opposing manager said he should be playing at a higher level
Man, Eddy Izzard is putting out some fantastic pictures on Twitter.
There is the rally cap.
And that's the game.
Bah!
Game over
Way to lose at history Boston!
It does take the edge of their celebration. Probably worse that the Yankees took the lead in the top of the 1st and never lost it
They can try again in 50 years.
Or tomorrow night
Which prompted me to change my FB status to "50 years?!?! I'll be soylent green by then!"
jwcrummett‽20/04/2012 at 23:36:19
Way to lose at history Boston!
It is a sad part of their history of the many, many,.many painful ways they have lost to the Yankees since sending Ruth to them. Used to be called "The Curse of the Babe", as a matter of fact.
cheers for the comments people. enjoyed that one. great day for a game. apologies i had to duck out. yell if ya fancy doing more.
Thanks to everyone who joined in tonight. We need to pick another game soon for Christine to break out the FBFB
Thanks for the entertainment this evening Mr. C!

Still not sure what that is or how it works.

seconded.
Tomorrow's game by any chance?
Happy to. As long as no one shouts at me for knowing only about Brad Pitt, and everyone helps me with proper knowledge.
We will keep feeding you information so you can feed it back to us
I'll be finishing my paper tomorrow and hopefully not being overly distracted by the internet.
