Somehow, there are only six bakers left in the competition, and this time they're facing the challenges that pastry brings. A glimpse at the TV guides suggest our intrepid kitchen adventurers will have to make suet pudding, choux buns and some puffy-puff-puff pastry. In fact, the BBC say: "As they reach the end of their pastry marathon, the bakers reach the showstopper and must make three different types of perfectly puffed pastries. One type must be filled, another must be iced and the third is up to them. From palmiers to cream horns, they have just four hours to impress the judges." Mmm, cream horns.

Mr C likes pastry. Hopefully he won't be watching, and we know he wouldn't ever comment on a baking show. Phew.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:01

This seems like a good place to plug my post: http://mrschristine.com/2013/09/29/is-the-great-british-bake-off-getting-too-complicated/

    Still love it though :)

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:02

    Evening all.

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:02

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:03

    Ooh, only one chap left.

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:03

what are they making and would i like it?

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:04

what are they making and would i like it?

Some of these things sound nice. The word suet puts me off right from the start.

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:05

    ice-cream in pastry?

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:05

    Sounds good to me :)

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:06

    Rupert the cat.

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:06

She has cats, that is a plus for me :D

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:07

As they explain themselves to Mary and Paul, it's awful to watch their confidence draining!

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:07

    barberry??

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:08

    barberry??

That is a berry... but I have no idea about taste etc.

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:08

    Ooooo, lamb suet pudding :)

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:10

I don't understand the closed tin/clutch bag thing.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:11

Making a string handle is proper planning.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:14

This one seems to have a lot of waiting around, as the stuff is cooking. Also, the lamb one went into boiling water, does that count as baking?

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:15

Erm, it is all with suet pastry, so ticks that box.

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:15

    second guessing the judges...

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:15

    ♥ choux

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:16

The one in the tin has come out perfect shape!

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:17

Doesn't feel like his caramelising of that sugar is going to go well...

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:17

Doesn't feel like his caramelising of that sugar is going to go well...

    That's gone very wrong!

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:17

    blowtorch!

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:18

    Them curly things are awesome.

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:18

    That's gone very wrong!

The cake will burn, rather than a cold creme brulee, which will not (well... until waaaaaay after the sugar has done its job).

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:19

He second-guessed the judges the wrong way round!

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:19

    "that's weird"

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:19

I like the look of that one :)

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:20

eek. me no likey that lamb thing.

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:21

eek. me no likey that lamb thing.

Needs more of a meety-brown colour inside for me

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:21

They're all doing well with the flavours so far.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:22

I am worried she's going to be referred to as goat girl now.

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:23

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:24

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:33

Glad Glen didn't get last place, he was panicking a bit there.

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:34

    lovely piping.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:34

The bakers have run out of things to say, now just eating.

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:35

    wow - making puff!!

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:36

The trouble with this is it's really quite too obvious how much butter you're putting in there. At least when you mix it in, you can forget about it :)

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:38

    chocolate what?

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:38

    chocolate what?

    Elephant ear, obvs.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:40

Scary Paul and Mary watching on and muttering to themselves.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:42

    "Getting a good puff"

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:43

After watching this I'm actually considering making my own puff pastry, but probably only once.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:43

You want it to rise, but also want to weigh it down?

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:44

After watching this I'm actually considering making my own puff pastry, but probably only once.

We definitely need a blog post about that!

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:44

If you weigh the middle part down then it should give you nice walls around everything (I think) once the outside edges rise a whole load.

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:45

We definitely need a blog post about that!

Will do... when I get round to giving it a go ;) can't promise you it will be any time soon :P

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:46

You have to start training Baby^ at some point.

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:46

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:47

Ohhhh, she's making cornet-y cones!! Ridiculous

Cream horns... yet another thing I've never thought about being actually made from ingredients and stuff.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:47

    It looks like a pillow!

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:48

Mrs^ says that she wanted to give me a sous-chef :) But I might not start him on puff.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:49

Glenn's is a right mess! Not good.

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:50

    Who's not finished?...

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:50

    Magic pastry.

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:51

I fear for him - avoiding making puff might just be a contest-killer.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:52

A piano of cake. I'll have that.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:55

    Okay, I'm hungry now.

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:55

I like the idea of puff baskets. Intriguing. I ain't making no home-made puff though :)

  • Will^01/10/2013 at 19:57

Never done it before, I feel I might try once... but shop bought is just soo good there is no need to DIY.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:57

That was quite obvious, but it'll be less good without him. All lady quarter finals.

  • Christine01/10/2013 at 19:58

    Beca's switched to competitive mode.

  • Mr C01/10/2013 at 19:59
