Fresh from the introduction of our baker's dozen of candidates last week, we're moving on to a new week of challenges. This time it's all about bread - Paul Hollywood's speciality. Twelve contestants remain in the competition, and hopefully they can get through this session of baking without too much in the way of injury - last week was all about those sticky blue plasters. So, get those aprons on (or perhaps not if you're just watching from the sofa), it's time to bake!
The Great British Bake Off - Bread
Published by Christine Blachford on
We need TV's to invent smellovision as the smell of bread baking is the best smell ever.
Yes! Although smell-o-vision things never smell very good.
I guess... we could bake actual bread?
We could... but... also, Greggs.
Should've thought about that earlier... we must think ahead ahead of next week.
How long does it take to bake bread?
Depends what kind of bread... inside a couple of hours is about right, but it can take a good few more if you're making an 'interesting' loaf.
I always imagine dit would take like 7 or 8 hours for some reason. My brain tells me something that smells that good takes a long time. I would love to make proper bread if I had some time and just focused on it
I find it's not so much the baking, but the waiting in between rises that puts me off.
It can take 6, 7, 8 hours for a loaf :)
Thinking about it, I've used a recipe for ciabatta that takes 24+ hours, even before it is put in the oven.
I couldn't wait that long for a ciabatta. I'm bad enough at restaraunts waiting for it
Is it baking day again already?
It is indeed!
christine's stolen my vevo and replaced it some cooking channel :(
still, yay for only connect.
And Mrs Coren-Mitchell, your favourite ;)
shhhhhhhh!
I haven't watched that in ages. I forgot all about it. How did I manage that?
They've just finished a series, not 2 weeks ago - we never miss it :)
I used to watch it all the time. When we had the daily threads it was always discussed. It was very popular here.
It has been a long time. The last wall I played was the first Children In need one which is number 66 and now there are over 300
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00lskhg/features/quiz
we haven't watched since we got effectively unlimited sport. hopefully the novelty will have worn off before the next series starts.
We started this series so well and then just lost it somewhere. Darn it.
we lost it to baseball.
I'm cooking curry for tea. It's not quite baking but it's the next best thing, 'onest.
We've had pizza, which is bread with tomato and cheese after all :)
I have plain naan bread, hurrah!
Even the BBC2 announcer lady is getting in on the puns.
Ooh, I forgot it was all lookalikes.
Despite having already eaten too much, I'm blatantly going to be starving by the end of this.
I love that you two are watching baseball.
To combine sport and baking I have a quiz question. 5 points to the first person to get it right.
Which English football team got their name because of baking?
I am hoping for more Howard awesomeness
Aston Vanilla.
Danny Baker!
It's good but it's not right
I know there is a lot of him but he is not a team yet
Breadsticks... testy :)
Paul's hair shards.
Chelsea Bun FC?
spaceman!
Would it help if I said their name is not at all obviously connected to bakery
Woohoo Howard is creative!
#bff
Ful(l-of-cake)ham?
Greggs FC?
You are very inventive. I will give you that but unfortunately no points
Tottenham Hot-cross-bun-spurs.
I'm out.
arsenal have a half-baked squad.
Are they a league team? Must be new
they're rising through the leagues quickly.
I wish that was correct
But this is the season that they are going to invest. Honestly
I hope ruby doesn't cry at everything this weke.
LT has decided to sleep... :(
The first person who put chocolate, mint and ice cream together was a genius
Mmmmm. Giant matchsticks.
How did she have the time to make that?
Actual genius.
I love that oven door'
Hehe, glasses steaming up from the oven. Familiar territory
Bit of maths there.
200!!
How can she count them and be 2 short?
I don;t think I;'ve had 200 in my life
Yey for maths, boo for bad maths ;)
Phew, gregg wallace saved one of croftys.
It was lucky he was looking!
burnt matchstick is amazing.
those masterchefs have eyes everywhere
Ooooh I like bread! Love the matchsticks, although hope she's not blowtorching them all
Ohhhhh, giant matchsticks as in matchsticks for fire. I thought she meant chocolate matchsticks.
As in the elusive sneaky thin cousin of after eights matchsticks.
Chocolate matchsticks in a matchbox?
shhh
Someone is doing chilli chocolate and ginger
That's the match woman
Nigella seeds? You can grow your own Nigella?
"Very neat, very precise, very you."
Mmmmm, reminding me of the amazing bread I had on holiday last year - went out for dinner and pretty much just ate bread
Yep. The trouble is you have to wait 20 years till they grow up and you have to look after them all that time
All these sticks are amazinf
Oh I see. Bit odd doing sweet (choc/ginger etc) breadsticks. But amazing with the box
I want some breadsticks now.
I want chocolate matchsticks. Damn matchstick lady
Rosemary and raisin seems an odd combination.
What odd breadsticks
Baseball in the bake off. The game is finally taking off here
Blimey, that girls moods are mad! Tears last time. Euphoric now!
The Romain Grosjean of moods
Sue reminds me of Danny Wallace.
oooh, slow mo bread.
I saw a plaster there.
Since no-one got anywhere near the football team I am going to give a huge hint. I am going to tell you the name and all you have to do is find the baking connection
Sheffield Wednesday
If there was even an F1 Bake Off, you know who would make a good contestant?
Plaster Maldonadough.
I had no idea that muffin size was such an issue
if was started by a chef?
It was started by bakers
Wednesday is the day after Bake Off day. Easy.
:)
The Muffin Man? I thought that was George Bluth.
Pretty much. It was the only day they could play because of their work. Quite why Wednesdays were less busy for bakers I have no idea
They eat cake
I am sure they ate it as they baked it
cheffield wednesday.
Oh dear.
In school we had to make muffins and I put self raising flour into mine by accident and left it for too long. I wish I had a photo from that day so you could see the one giant muffin with 12 legs.
they're not MUFFINS?!
I agree, i thought they meant chocolate muffins. chocolate is causing a lot of confusion for me tonight
No Red Bull. Besides none of these amateurs sniffed the ingredients
Ohhh, Sue!!!
Hehehehe!
I always get confused about muffins and crumpets and pancakes
Someone has the evidence already
https://twitter.com/BritishBakeOff/status/372441205017034752
So brilliant.
Uhoh, this week's teary girl could get more teary... :S
I think she must have been listening to Mr C
she is not having a good week.
"put your elbow into it"
I thought no-one got that
No, pulled it out the bag!
problem with this show, next time i have to cook... i'll be able to :(
I was meaning Lucy...
Awesome, even Mel is making puns
Haha!!
Just saw this fly by on twitter
Post-doughmatic stress disorder.
"Here is my loaf of Hovis."
Is this challenge the dough-stopper?
i know things now. buns n'stuff.
We need to get sidepodradio 2 organised so you can prove it
Volunteer!
I've never seen a bread peacock.
Hell, even a real peacock
Can it technically happen? If it can I can volunteer loads of people to do shows
Oh thought you meant Ruby. She is doing much better this week
not yet. waiting for apple to release something. well anything really.
I have seen a real one but never heard of a bread peacock. That sounds like a peacock sandwich
Picasso!
I think I would make a tardis bread.
well anything really doesn't sound massively optimistic
This week is really not going right for that lady
all our equipment desperately needs replacing. they can't/won't/haven't announced any new stuff for aaaaages.
That's a collection of tools for the spaceman!
he's turned up with a carpentry set.
I just figured out who the woman with the blue and white top reminds me of. Melissa Porter
'escuse me?!
Paul the psychic octopus :)
Well he didn't see being eaten as a loaf of bread coming.
what the...?
Sweet and savoury in the same bread? Ambitious.
White chocolate and apricot and chicken tikka?
What kind of combination is that?
That yin-&-yang bread could either go really well or really badly (or maybe a bit of both)
Oh look. a thing.
♥
I'm using that.
That's a snazzy thermometor.
#want
One of my colleagues almost got shot in an Indian airport because he had one of those thermometers in his bag and two soldiers thought it was a weapon
That's not how an oven works.
You can buy them on ebay for a feww pounds.
I like the bits where they watch the oven
I hope that tomato bread is a stroke of genius...
Cephalopod surely he means CephaloPaul
it sounds pretty rubbish so far but I don't want to say anything as she's done everything else wrong today so far and I feel bad
Hehehe, he's forgotten which side is sweet. I would so do that.
Jeez, they really have it in for her
I'm just hoping for her that her own yeast mix and use on tomato liqueur has made her loaf the best thing since sliced bread.
It just looks like a loaf of bread - not really a showstopper. Oh dear.
Looks like it's wrapped up
Paul is such a tease.
It is so pleasing when ridiculous combination work :D
The sun bread looks like it came of Valentino Rossi's helmet
Looks like theyre leaving tomato nread till last...
*bread
Match lady has done well today.
That knot is very cleaver - v jealous.
I'm very confused by that bread
Quite the turn around for Ruby
Wow - rubbish last week to star baker this week!
Ruby is definitely a bread baker more than a cake baker
Oh I wonder who?!
Yeah, not a good week for her really...
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Dessert¬
Definitely getting the snacks in for next week then.
Desserts next week so no-one should be stressed
V hungry now
I didn't think I could get into a baking program but it is amazing what live commenting can do
Yay!
Thanks for the comments again, my food-loving friends.
Doesn't mean I will ever bake
You don't have to bake. Bakers need people to eat their wares too.
I can do that
