Winners of Group B, Germany, now face the challenge from the runner up of Group A, Greece - with Germany riding high on three successive victories so far. Greece also have the small problem of their captain facing a one match ban after picking up a yellow card in the game against Russia. There are political tensions surrounding the match but it will come down to the players to get their team through to the semi-finals. Whoever wins will take on the victor of the England/Italy match.
Germany vs Greece (Quarter-final)

Hallo everybody. Can't wait for Germany and, er, erm, err, Greece... oh, sigh.
you thinking it might be a bit one-sided? score prediction?
3-0, I mean Germany aren't even starting with Muller, Gomez and Podolksi. Although granted they are starting with Andre Schurrle who has currently scored five games in a row for my Bayern team on Football Manager.
€200bn - 0
It's already started.... https://twitter.com/simonbirdmirror/status/216238830875983872
:)
hehehe
Greece, can't even kick off right.
jeeeeeez. great start!
good pass, but over ran.
i'm gonna predict 4-0.
The Germans only need to do what is necessary in the first 45, because as we all know, the Greeks take the second half of everything off.
goal.
G... ohh wait
oh. not a goal.
erm... okay, so how was that offside, he kicked the ball at the keeper.
If the offside man had stopped, the other would've scored it.
Something to do with phases, its still in the first phase of play.
oh right.
if you'd asked me before the competition if understood the rule, i'd have said yes. now... not a clue.
Hi all
yo chap.
Evening. Bringing goals?
Lino flagged and the ref blew his whistle, so it was offside :)
but why did he flag?
I don't see this as 0:0
Because he is confused by the offside law :)
Lack of stamina?
who isn't!
heeeee!!!
Nothing beats a pitch which has seemingly been rained on for 24 hours.
germany playing in green and brown this evening.
Just to clarify to people, there are no phases in the offide law. It's all about when the ball is played by the attacking team. It's actually very simple.
When I were a lad there were games where every player on the pitch was brown fro head to toe
but he kicked the ball at the keeper. can you not shoot for goal when your player is behind the opposition either?
I have heard referees talking about players being inactive in one phase then active in the next phase
The other players were deemed offside when they touched the rebound. A goalkeeper saving the ball is not deemed to have played the ball as he isn't taking a controlled touch.
oooooh!
how the hell does the linesman keep track of that??
If they are talking about that, I think they are talking in a very complicated way about touching the ball before and after an I controlled touch by a defensive player.
*an uncontrolled touch. iOS is stupid!
So basically, phase 1 would be when the ball is first struck, phase two is after the keeper saves the ball. But in the law, there are no phases. It's a technical term to make referees sound clever.
BTW, I would say the assistant got it right :-)
now you've explained it. i agree :)
useless shot
That should have been an easy goal
Pitch slowed and made it difficult.
oh my lord.
That'll be all that water then
Germany have carved Greece wide open. Germany will score soon and then they will keep scoring
Was there not a goal earlier in the tournament that was a shot that deflected off a defenders leg to an offside player who then scored? Can't remember which match (there have been so many).
ooh, nice work keeper.
The second Croatian goal against Ireland? Maybe.
Defenders' touches no longer affect offside. What matters is the attacking player's position the last time a team mate touched the ball. It used to be any contact of the ball and a defender and he could not be offside but not any more.
That's what I thought, but I do remember it being given *looks for highlights video*
Once the Germans stop rushing they will start scoring. They are trying to be too direct. The success they have had in this game has been when they were more patient
Much better. Play passes - draw the defender out - switch the play and the Greek defence opened up completely
Just wait, the Greeks will let the Germans over-run them, then come out for the 2nd-half with some kind of wooden-horselike-mascot.
If Germany try to be this direct against Spain in the final they will get mollicated
Never trust anyone with a horse mascot. #worksforF1too
:)
g.o.a.l
GOAL for the captain
The strikers couldn't do it... so they let the defender do it.
Takes a full back to do that. Great goal
If the defender had stayed on his feet that would have hit him.
Greece are now defending 20 yards further forward than they were before the goal
Bring on (even more) jokes about Germans kicking the Greeks out of the Euro.
Oooo, this is fun, real-time odds analysis (with funky graphics): http://188bet.kickoff.co.uk/fixtures/?country=england&league=6&match_id=1063217
I thought he had scored
same
likey
should've been way more than 1-0. good half though.
According to that, the Greeks now only have a 4% chance of winning.
Seems optimistic.
Greece didn't have a touch in Germany's box during the first half.
ouch.
Greece bringing on a striker for a full back
3-4-3? I like the intent
Ohh no, 4-3-3.
anyone told them they're a goal down?
Great running there - knocking past the man, going after it, and getting there
They 'only' need 1 goal, and to prevent Germany scoring, then get through extra time then they can possibly make something happen in the lottery that is penalties.
They don't want to be two or more goals down. Gradually they will commit more resources forward but there is no reason to open up their defence to the Germans just yet
A back heel flick there? Really?
hmm... germany... penalties.
Although we know Neuer's not the best at winning shootouts recently.
Well I'll be damned.
OMG
...
...
...
never seen the like.
The commentator doesn't mean debt, he means deficit.
Two attackers - three defenders !!!!
Stats update. To win in 90 mins: GER 33%, GRE 26%
All I can say it that goal was SPL quality.
i don't know what that means, but it was my favourite one of the tournament.
Scottish Premier League. Scorer plays for Celtic. Almost never scores
ooooooh!
Normality resumes.
wow
Germany take the lead again
blimey
The advantage of playing Turks against Greece.
:)
The defender was completely on his heels. Both feet flat on the ground. Pathetic at that level
Gekas looks like a scale model of Razor Ruddock
Terrible pass
Goal
3-1
Game over
Comedy goalkeeping.
He, er, err, I've got nothing to defend him there.
Also, Klose looks like Odo from ST Deep Space 9.
Greek defenders are awful
The Germans there swapped a fruity drink for some yoghurt - Schurrle + Mueller.
:)
I wonder if they keep him in a bucket between games
German win only 98% sure
Well so much for the Greek's plan to score and then park the bus
As soon as I move to another tab or Twitter, I forget about the live comments :(
Stop moving then
They parked the bus for sure, they just forgot to close the door.
Comments on one half, surfing on the other.
4-1
Goal.
iPad can't do that :(
Thump.
Bad times.
I just got told off because I'd made the post "Goal" already tonight.
You need imagination when you comment here because repeat comments are not allowed.
Either that or you type
goal
goal.
goal..
goal...
I added the full stop :)
Didn't realise that feature extended back over the whole thread.
What a tackle
Germany vs Greece, shots 26-8, pass accuracy 91%-67%, possession 69%-31%.
Wow, only the second penalty of the tournament. Both have been awarded to Greece.
How can you give a penalty for that?
Pity?
He knew it was somewhat of a gift.
After that 2nd-half, I can't see how we'd beat them when (if) it comes to that.
I remain unsure as to how Greece scored 2. I do like this German team, should win the whole thing.
I can't see us even beating Italy.
The Germans have proven then can score, the other favs, Spain, look less confident.
Greece were terrible after they lost the first goal. I would not judge Germany too highly based on the a performance against Greece.
I think Italy will beat England though
I was thinking of how we'd play against to them (probably very similarly unfortunately). But I agree, Italy will be a big ask.
real life needs to stop getting in the way of my football.
it's on the list.
am 5 weeks behind on coding, but it's coming.
