Today is the start of WWDC 2010. No, not an F1 Working Group on the merits of David Coulthard's white trousers but Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference. There's a fair amount of love for the fruitily named shiny products of 'i' around here but we understand that not everyone is particularly bothered about Steve Jobs' black turtleneck attire today. So here's a breakout thread for discussing all things Apple.

What can we expect? Well, there's a lot of rumour and very few facts yet but the odds are pretty good that the refreshed iPhone will be announced - iPhone HD or suitably titled wundermobile. Today, there has been a lot of buzz about some sort of magic trackpad that looks like a wireless keyboard... without any keys! A refreshed Mac Mini and/or Mac Pro line up is also mooted but I could roll these out for a while.
While we wait, you might want to check out the story of a Sydney restaurant that has replaced their paper menus with iPads.
Several sites will be tracking the news as it's released, here are a few I'll be keeping an eye on.
Please suggest any that you find useful or not prone to crashing! Especially if you find a video stream.

Word on the street is that Apple has filmed a finale commercial to the ‘Get a Mac’ series but this time with just John Hodgeman. The commercial was filmed at a bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn last week and get this: PC pretends to be a bartender and gets a guy drunk in order to get his hands on his new Apple prototype!

960 must be 960x720, which is hd, so maybe the telgraph have it wrong?
the next iPhone will have a screen resolution of 960 x 640. This is quadruple the number of pixels on current iPhones, which have a screen resolution of 480 x 320

There are so many iterations, its all so uncoordinated, most handsets are non upgradable, patches are next to invisible.

it depends what you might use it for. for me, portable movie editing is heaven. will have to see how they implement it, but to me this = creativity.
questions remain whether the camera will be open to all developers. but the future is looking fantastic, if you're:

i think they're wrong though:
the new iPhone cannot accept regular SIM cards, requiring instead a smaller chip called a Micro SIM. This is a terrible thing.
it's not a terrible thing, it is progress. apple were the first major manufacturer to drop the floppy disk drive and who pines after those any more?
or to put it another way. how big would the iphone be if people had insisted the floppy drive stick around?

I guess its a different way preople use phones. Most people in the US/UK will never take the sim out unless something goes wrong with the phone.
People in this part of the world generally travel more, and have seperate sims for work/personal use, and since they are unlocked people swich between handsets

This will make it difficult for many to adopt the new iPhone. Why so? They can't just buy one off the shelves if they don't have a micro SIM yet. They will have to wait for their mobile providers to make micro SIMs. Given that these micro SIMs will have to be made alongside regular SIMs (as only the iPhone will support them for now), not all mobile providers will be able or willing to take this risk financially.
Will it damage the new iPhone's sales? Depending on what the others offer, it might. At the very least, it will slow iPhone adoption globally compared to previous iterations.
Indeed. 90s CPUs had both floppy drives and CD drives. Made it easier for people to go CD.
i guess so, but in the case of the floppy drive, cd's had been around for 15 years and still the floppy wouldn't die. mostly because of the edge case people who wouldn't give it up, until forced to.
if the functionality is the same, only the packaging is smaller, i'm all for pushing people to change.

why though? every provider who sells the iphone will ensure they have one.
1. iPhone isn't the only thing out there. You have Android phones, you have Windows phones, you have Blackberries, you even have Nokias. And they're all catching up to what the iPhone has provided to date.
2. If a provider wishes to sell it, good and well. But they'll need time to create those micro SIMs, and they need to ensure that they have sufficient supply of both iPhones AND micro SIMs. You can't sell one without the other. And IIRC, the slow supply became a bit of an issue with the iPhone 3GS last year.
my only question is, why not kill off the dvd drive too. shipping software over the net, or via usb sticks would make me very happy.

Data DVDs might be killed off in favour of data Blu-rays. I'm not sure of the cost of a data Blu-ray vs. a USB stick.

final cut costs £999, who cares about the price difference of a usb stick when you're spending that much?
You still need something to build your machine from scratch, but I guess a 4or8 gb USB would do that job
a different angle on the same argument, is browser support. how long to do continue thinking about ie6 users, when they're the edge case and represent about 1% of your reader base? i say move on and support html5.

Might depend on your market. Not everyone is tech savvy enough to update browsers.

if the internet stopped working, you'd find a way to upgrade your browser. you just would.

their was an agreement that all phones would use a standard charger (micro usb?) which apple was a part of, but they havent implemented it?
I don't mind that ... much. If my netbook had a hard disk it'd be dead by now. I have a habit of dropping the poor thing.
