I'm writing this still reeling from the fact that Rafael Nadal was knocked out of the second round of Wimbledon - the first time he's been out at this stage in major tournament for seven years. It doesn't throw the tournament wide open, Federer is playing up a storm so far, but it's certainly thrown a spanner in the works. Meanwhile, we have third round matches to enjoy today, including the aforementioned Federer, Clijsters and Sharapova plus Sabine Lisicki. Here's to more good weather and/or the roof!
Day 5 at Wimbledon
Published by Christine Blachford on
If I say how rubbish the weather is again, will I make it sunny two days in a row? :)
well i think i need a couple more tvs, its all happening, tennis, football and cricket all on the same time, i think the remote might be getting a fair workout over the next couple of hours.
i think you live under a cloud :)
i blame you for rain delay.
yeah they have been off three times in the cricket too. is it summer over there?
i think they're just using up all their rain before i arrive for 17 days of glorious sunshine
it has to stop raining sometime soon we are having abit of rain here too, 12 and raining the next 2 days
we've been saying that since april :)
wohoo the tennis is starting
now wheres that remote of mine gone?
flicking between the cricket and tennis now, lisicki started well against stephens, djokovic should win easilly but last night there was an reasonable sized upset (didnt see that coming) footy is all but over and ping.... cummins just claims his first helmet as bopara forgets to duck.
@Wimbledon: Stepanek made to change v. bright red & blue shoes by ump because they break predominantly white rule. Now playing in white & green shoes.
You'd think by the fifth day, he might have noticed the white.
i didnt think that rule applied for shoes aswell
stephens breaks back against lisicki
i guess they try do the world a favour and keep him off tv as much as possible
this may be my favourite new twitter
https://twitter.com/GBTennisJourno
because it really does sound like too many of the journos I follow :D
lookout, here we go again, stepanek gets the first set v djokovic
ooooh!
It must be the shoes.
sharipova struggling to serve in the wind. still winning, but in a grumpy fashion.
surely women should be allowed to wear shorts in the wind? it's a bit awkward.
sharipova wins. easy.
They are allowed to wear shorts anytime but I guess if their chosen designer didn't give them any... they can't.
ahh, major designer fail. holding down your clothes until the wind dies out seems like a silly way to play tennis.
zvonareva is crying on court while playing clijsters, down a set but up plenty of tears, not sure whats going on but she has called for the trainer. now she is having a medical time out, i think she is sick, not an actual injury.
Federer appears to have lost a set, too.
Tiebreak in the second set. If I recall Amy correctly, Fed is not so good at the tiebreaks.
It's gone. Federer two sets down.
whats going on now federer has lost the first 2 sets, geez if it wasnt 4 am in the morning id start drinking.
hehe
Some would say that's prime drinking time!
Oh no, Benneteau fell down.
yeah, sometimes i am still drinking at 4am after a big night, not just cracking the first can at 4am.
although next time if i go to bed early, set the alarm, it could be an interesting sunrise
Federer has broken early in the third set. Wonder if Bennie is either a) injured or b) totally shaken from that fall.
Federer breaks again. Oh well.
roger has lifted his game
Mrs Federer stifles a yawn. How much tennis she must have to watch.
oh boo sorana cirstea is out, beaten pretty easily by kirilenko
Third set Federer.
lleyton hewitt doubles match 7-7 in the 5th set
make that 9-7 its all over a rare win for the aussies at wimbledon this year.
On serve in the fourth set. Ball just bounced off the umpire and back into court. Funny.
Federer is losing too? What is happening to Wimbledon this year?
I don't think he'll be losing for long.
Does he know that?
You should have seen what he was playing like before!
How did he see that?
incredible.
I presume it was just blind optimism.
Tiebreak.
How is Amy holding up?
Now is a bad time for a teabreak.
Oh!
hasn't been seen since 2pm :)
I hope she is sleeping, her schedule is scary.
second cracking match in two days she's slept through. should we headping?
I think there are too many tiebreaks in this game for Amy to enjoy!
Maybe wait and see if Federer wins the tiebreak first. No point waking her for 6 points
ahh good, she should be sleeping but i had images of her being awake and not being able to sleep through this match.
Any reason why the roof is closed?
bit scared by this match.
@wimbledon The Federer v Benneteau match will be played under the roof until its conclusion or until 11pm tonight (whichever comes first)
tense.
Cos it was raining earlier and they don't wanna stop it to take the roof off.
That makes some sense.
Plus they'd have to put it back on again when it gets dark, and it takes half an hour to "acclimatise"
that's like me in the morning.
dang
2 sets all
The crowd is also a lot happier when Federer wins something than when Nadal won something yesterday. Didn't realise he was that popular.
Benneteau limping a bit now. He's asked for the trainer.
He can't go a whole set like this.
He had a bit of a massage and now seems better. Weird.
Having said that, Fed has just broken, so, it's probably all downhill from here.
The TerminatorFederer does not make mistakes.Turning it off now, final set is no fun.
I disappear for ten minutes and someone dropped the match on its head
Looks like Amy will be happy when she wakes
They really get these guys into interviews quickly
Amy = not sleeping. http://twitter.com/AmyFulton/status/218802451468390400
heh!
Sleep tweeting?
apples fault!
Although normally I sleep through notifications so maybe its fate I woke up for the end of that
bbc beta launch their olympic video player and test it with wimbledon. pretty damn cool:
