So, it comes to this. The final day of Wimbledon 2012 and the men's singles final. We enjoyed a longer game than expected for the women's final yesterday, although it was not a surprise to see Serena Williams take home the championship - she has been on good form all fortnight and was more than a match for Radwanska. Today, Andy Murray will take on the might of Roger Federer in his first Wimbledon final, and whilst I have an inkling I know which way the match will go, I just hope it's a good one.

hoping for a very long match, so we can catch the end after the grand prix.

either that, or hoping for a very short GP :)

It's a day like today you wished your TV has Picture-in-Picture capability. :)

  • CAMikaze08/07/2012 at 12:53

GHere in the states for many years, we had the coverage of the Championships on NBC until last year. Starting this year we have to watch the finals on ESPN which is a cable TV channel. :(

  • CAMikaze08/07/2012 at 13:06

I had the oppurtunity to listen to some tennis action some years ago and the style of Play-by-play reminds me of a ice hockey match. But with more stoppages. ;)

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 13:07

the ladies have to cart all their own stuff onto court for their final but the men don't.

how about we let Murray win a slam when theres someone else in the final? Nadal can lose one, that'd be great.

  • Lukeh08/07/2012 at 13:24

this is why it should be renamed murray mount. mount feels like hilly than hill.

    ...obviously.

that hill is so tiny in person

can't wait to see it.. eek!

  • CAMikaze08/07/2012 at 13:25

Wouldn't mind if there was a Murray (Walker) Hill/Mount at Silverstone, though I don't know if there is one with a good view of the on-track action.

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 13:25

it was my very important role to correctly pronounce Aorangi Terrace to my tour group. I wonder who they ask when theres no Kiwis on the tour.

    not as many as sampras!

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 13:43

    Too many?

Two too little - Sampras won it 7 times. Fed needs to win it 8 times. ;)

heheh. I mean 'publicly known' wise but yes, would be very odd.

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 13:47

You can't put Alex Fergusin in the Royal box. With his language people would think prince Philip was there

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 13:59

Federer had his chances there, but he didn't lost them. Murray just won them.

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 13:59

Andy has used all his challenges already. Does he get more in the next set?

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 14:00

Andy has used all his challenges already. Does he get more in the next set?

yes. and if this set goes to tiebreak he'll get one more.

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 14:00

yes. and if this set goes to tiebreak he'll get one more.

    That's not so bad then

There was a puzzling moment in yesterday's final when Serena's service was called long, she challenged and Hawkeye showed it to actually be inside the service line, by a few centimetres... I wonder how accurate that system really is.

  • lou08/07/2012 at 14:08

    lou are you a photographer?

    yep!

  • lou08/07/2012 at 14:08

    Lou,

Would you need accreditation to do a photoshoot in a factory as a team prepared for a race? Just thinking about different options

  • lou08/07/2012 at 14:39

Would you need accreditation to do a photoshoot in a factory as a team prepared for a race? Just thinking about different options

nope, think that very much depends on the team and how much access they want to grant a photographer. accreditation is mainly for events where photographers need more access etc. factory stuff is a good plan tho!

I guess the same would apply to straight line testing as that is not FIA sanctioned. And you are a lot less likely to get in the road there than at a race

geez roger you are doing it very tough right now.

  • CAMikaze08/07/2012 at 14:49

You think there'll be Mixed Doubles in Olympics tennis in 2016? I know men and women compete against each other in archery and equestrian and I remember there was a Team competition in Luge at the Youth Olympic Games earlier this year where boys and girls races on the same team.

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 14:51

theres mixed doubles this year, i assume they'll keep it.

  • CAMikaze08/07/2012 at 14:51

If I had a DVR, I'd try to sync the video and streaming audio of the match so that they would not be any delay between what I'm seeing and what I'm hearing.

  • CAMikaze08/07/2012 at 14:52

theres mixed doubles this year, i assume they'll keep it.

Ah, that's nice. :) And if memory serves, the Gold Medal matches are on Court 1 instead of Centre Court.

They'll be on Centre Court then? 0.0

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 14:54

They'll be on Centre Court then? 0.0

yeah, why wouldn't they be on the main court?

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 14:56

Why don't players hit the net cord all the time? Far more effective than hitting the ball to the other player :)

  • CAMikaze08/07/2012 at 14:56

yeah, why wouldn't they be on the main court?

    :)

Get the roof on and get on with it. The clouds may be cumulonimbus now but the past couple of weeks have taught us they are likely to turn to big black sods with more rain than there is water on the plabet

Keeping it outdoors helps Andy doesn't it?

it doesn't help him so much as they think closing it might be more in Rogers favour

  • Mr C08/07/2012 at 15:20

if they close the roof all the time though, what's the point in opening it at all? no reason to put it on runners at all, just have indoor tennis.

but i don't think i've been happier than sitting in the rain at Spa watching the F1 cars (i realise i'm alone in this) .. and sitting in the blazing sun while watching Andy win Queens! Nothing beats a glass of pimms, sunshine and grasscourt tennis!

  • Alex Andronov08/07/2012 at 15:27

Murray's in there going, "I don't want to stay calm Lendel"

"You have to try and keep balanced".

"I don't want Evan Lendel, I WANT ODD LENDEL"

    *HULK MURRAY*

once I get to London I'll let you know my UK number because I imagine arring by text is easiest. Southfields is the main tube station if you're heading to Wimbledon.

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 16:09

    Thought that was out

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 16:09

Can't you get your Welsh cousin to visit for you?

well that would possibly be easier, and mum says shes a friendly girl who gets on well with everyone, my friend is like that too so they'd be great together!

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 16:09

    How does Roger do that?!

hmm, I have to leave in about 6.5 hours, Wimbledon curfew is in just over 5. Perfect, I can get some sleep regardless.

"the annoying thing about Federer is he doesn't look surprised when he does that sort of stuff"

  • Bassano08/07/2012 at 16:14

Surprised Murray didn't get a racquet abuse caution there

  • Raddar08/07/2012 at 16:14

Surprised Murray didn't get a racquet abuse caution there

    that was mild

  • Bassano08/07/2012 at 16:15

    He's rattled

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 16:15

they haven't wrapped up any of their deuces on the first go

  • lou08/07/2012 at 16:15

MURRAY WHY CAN'T YOU JUST WIN THIS GAME!

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 16:15

Murray is turning into Classic Murray.

  • Raddar08/07/2012 at 16:16

Murray is turning into Classic Murray.

that's classic Fed for ya - a silly error!

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 16:16

MURRAY WHY CAN'T YOU JUST WIN THIS GAME!

I'm asking the same of Federer.

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 16:16

Murray seems to win a lot of his secnd serves fairly easily

  • lou08/07/2012 at 16:17

    just.one.more.....

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 16:17

    10th deuce *weep*

  • Lukeh08/07/2012 at 16:18

    Ohhh damn slipping

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 16:18

    on the line!

don't challenge murray, the chalk clearly went up

  • lou08/07/2012 at 16:18

Murray you aren't tsonga you're not made for falling on the floor.

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 16:18

don't challenge murray, the chalk clearly went up

    He didn't see it though.

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 16:18

Murray you aren't tsonga you're not made for falling on the floor.

Tsonga has resolved to dive less! thats what makes him him, it'll never last.

  • Bassano08/07/2012 at 16:18

Lots of challenges with a while to go

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 16:19

    FINALLY

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 16:19

    YES!

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 16:19

Federer is really on top now

  • lou08/07/2012 at 16:19

Lots of challenges with a while to go

that's Murray's style. use all the challenges

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 16:19

Federer is really on top now

Needs to hold and consolidate though.

  • lou08/07/2012 at 16:19

Federer is really on top now

    only in this set...

  • Bassano08/07/2012 at 16:20

that's Murray's style. use all the challenges

But ones remaining, are the for the set or match?

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 16:20

    shankerer

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 16:20

But ones remaining, are the for the set or match?

    For the set.

  • Raddar08/07/2012 at 16:20

Andy needs to break back now, I'm sure Fed can pull back from 1-2, but can Andy??

  • lou08/07/2012 at 16:20

But ones remaining, are the for the set or match?

    The Set.

  • Bassano08/07/2012 at 16:20

    For the set.

    That makes more sense

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 16:20

that's Murray's style. use all the challenges

I can see the logic. Gets him a few seconds rest and points early in the set can have a bigger effect on the direction than those later

  • Lukeh08/07/2012 at 16:20

Next thing you know, people may be asking for lights at Centre Court if there aren't any set up already.

They had them on in the week didn't they, for Murray's late match

  • CAMikaze08/07/2012 at 16:22

The way it's going, I'm thinking this match will finish close to sunset.

  • Bassano08/07/2012 at 16:22

    Was that Lendl?

    Lendl is Murray's coach

  • CAMikaze08/07/2012 at 16:24

Future Davis Cup tie venue, perhaps?

  • john08/07/2012 at 16:30

    yes roger

  • lou08/07/2012 at 16:30

All i wanted was for him to try, and he is more than doing that.

however i wonder how quickly i can get home...

  • lou08/07/2012 at 16:30

right, hold on Murray, i'll be 20mins!

  • CAMikaze08/07/2012 at 16:31

I wonder if there are punts taking place on Over/Under for # of shots in each point rally...

  • john08/07/2012 at 16:31

right, hold on Murray, i'll be 20mins!

hopefully its over by then, im so tired, trying to hold on.

  • CAMikaze08/07/2012 at 16:31

You think the delay might have taken any momentum out of Murray?

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 16:32

I have spent more than 2 years wondering if I am a jinx so I hope Roger gets one more set :D

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 16:32

    Beckham for Germany - Becker

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 16:32

You think the delay might have taken any momentum out of Murray?

Nah. He had an easy hold in his first game on serve. It was that LONG dozen-deuce game that killed it.

  • CAMikaze08/07/2012 at 16:33

Nah. He had an easy hold in his first game on serve. It was that LONG dozen-deuce game that killed it.

True. TIme to get some momentum back to force a 5th set then.

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 16:34

Murray should just do second serves.

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 16:34

Murray is looking at his box too much and theres too much animation up there. Commentators hope he's looking at Lendl because his face doesn't change.

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 16:35

Murray is looking at his box too much and theres too much animation up there. Commentators hope he's looking at Lendl because his face doesn't change.

Murray's always been the kind to look for affirmation. Tennis' answer to Nigel Mansell, basically.

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 16:35

Murray's always been the kind to look for affirmation. Tennis' answer to Nigel Mansell, basically.

yeah. and he by far has the most hangers-on in his box, they had an article naming them all the other day and it was just ridiculous.

  • john08/07/2012 at 16:37

Murray is looking at his box too much and theres too much animation up there. Commentators hope he's looking at Lendl because his face doesn't change.

he really has always done that when things start turning bad for him, thats why they got lendl, he wont put up with any of that nonesense and is there to get it out of his game.

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 16:37

  • Raddar08/07/2012 at 16:57

yep, could have been the last chance to get back into it

  • lou08/07/2012 at 16:59

ahhhh :( just got back. gutted. come on Andy!!!

  • john08/07/2012 at 17:00

second set was unbelievable from roger, murray had him on the ropes, every service game was a struggle he was down he looked in real trouble every game but he managed to fight his way out of it and held his serve, meanwhile murray was breezing through his service games, but at 6-5 i roger had one small opening and he took it. i think thats probably best, or one of the best sets he has saved while struggling and thats given him the confidence to step his game up in the third and fourth set. what a champion.

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:01

Whatever the result, i'm so proud of what Murray has done today, Federer is playing fantastically! And he has put up a super fight!

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:03

its all about the body language, federer gives nothing away to his opponent, while murray doesnt quite now how to control it

    Very true. Federer potrays invincibility

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:11

its all about the body language, federer gives nothing away to his opponent, while murray doesnt quite now how to control it

it seems to be that the moment you show your emotions to Fed he wins. he has crazy powers

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 17:11

Somone woke up the crowd. Shame they were not like that for the last two hours

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:12

  • john08/07/2012 at 17:12

    Very true. Federer potrays invincibility

he is always so controlled, even on the times he is beaten

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:12

    this is so tense.

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 17:12

he is always so controlled, even on the times he is beaten

thats why i love those times that he snaps, because they're so rare

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:13

    oh murray, desperate times.

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 17:13

  • Lukeh08/07/2012 at 17:14

ahh.. unlucky andy, bloody good effort.

  • Mr C08/07/2012 at 17:14

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 17:15

YES! Better luck next year, Andy. I'll root for you when you're not up against Fed. :)

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:15

aw well done Muzza, put up such a good fight, but Fed was amazing.

    *hugs for muzza*

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 17:15

Federer deserved to win. No question about it

  • Lukeh08/07/2012 at 17:15

least he got himself a grand slam final set :)

  • Will^08/07/2012 at 17:15

Look at Murray - soaking it up like he'd won the thing.

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 17:15

Still the best British performance in the last.. what? 6 or 7 decades?

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:16

Look at Murray - soaking it up like he'd won the thing.

i saw that as him feeling a bit disapointed. but maybe i'm wrong.

Murray is younger than Federer thought right?

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 17:19

Murray is younger than Federer thought right?

Yup! Not sure by how much, though.

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 17:19

Murray is younger than Federer thought right?

yeah but when Murray lost his first final everyone said 'ahh well he's younger than Roger was when he got his first' but thats far from true now.

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 17:19

Yup! Not sure by how much, though.

    1981 v 1987

    How old is Nole?

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 17:19

yeah but when Murray lost his first final everyone said 'ahh well he's younger than Roger was when he got his first' but thats far from true now.

But Federer didn't have to beat Federer

  • jwcrummett08/07/2012 at 17:19

    1981 v 1987

Thanks, I was just trying to look it up.

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 17:20

    How old is Nole?

hes one week younger than Murray

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 17:20

    HIS KIDS ARE SO CUTE

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 17:20

His name was on the board already. #protest

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 17:21

hes one week younger than Murray

    That's Murray's HUGE problem.

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:21

    Murray is emotional! <3

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 17:21

    That's Murray's HUGE problem.

Roger took 8 finals before he lost one, Rafa won his first two I think, Novak won his second, I can't think of the last person to make 3 and not win any of them was.

  • Mr C08/07/2012 at 17:21

    awwwwww

  • Christine08/07/2012 at 17:22

oh no here come the water works, get on with it

    Or you could try empathy!

  • Raddar08/07/2012 at 17:22

I like that reaction of "I'm getting closer" - suggests he's not about to give up

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 17:23

he never gets emotional.. leave him be.

reminds me of Federer also crying when he lost to Nadal in... where was that again?

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 17:23

main issue though, Nadal got his first v Puerta (er, who?) , Roger got his v Mark Philippoussis and Djokovic got his v Tsonga. Murrays matchups have been much harder.

  • Lukeh08/07/2012 at 17:24

I like that reaction of "I'm getting closer" - suggests he's not about to give up

He'll get there, this'll only make him wanna push even harder to get that grand slam. Look how much it means to him!

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:24

i can't even imagine how he must feel. he's been put under so much pressure, by himself and by the UK, he couldn't have done much more today.

    awww even Kim is crying.

    Hang in there Muzza!!

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 17:24

main issue though, Nadal got his first v Puerta (er, who?) , Roger got his v Mark Philippoussis and Djokovic got his v Tsonga. Murrays matchups have been much harder.

i.e. Too many good players blocking his way?

This was Murray's best shot to date - he didn't need to face Rafa or Nole. But Fed was still there - and he's still better.

  • Lukeh08/07/2012 at 17:24

    awwww :(

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 17:24

reminds me of Federer also crying when he lost to Nadal in... where was that again?

2009 AO which people still give him crap for. 'wahhhh he tried to steal Nadals moment, he cried on purpose' because Roger has a lot of critics. I've never seen anyone say that about Andys crying.

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 17:25

    awwww :(

    Judy crying too. :(

  • Lukeh08/07/2012 at 17:25

the whole of the UK are now in tears

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:25

<3 <3 awwww!!! Tears in my eyes. bless him..

  • Raddar08/07/2012 at 17:25

He'll get there, this'll only make him wanna push even harder to get that grand slam. Look how much it means to him!

Lendl lost his first 3 finals I think before winning one, so he can teach Andy how to deal with that :)

  • Will^08/07/2012 at 17:25

Ok - so I withdraw my last ;)

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:25

the whole of the UK are now in tears

but not cause we're disappointed... because we <3 him and he's done so well, and we know how much he wanted this

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 17:25

I hate that the first thing they ask a champion is about the loser.

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 17:25

I appear to be crying too. Damn empathy.

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:26

:) you'll have to start liking Andy sometime!

  • Lukeh08/07/2012 at 17:26

of course, that speech was emotional stuff!

  • Steven Roy08/07/2012 at 17:26

I appear to be crying too. Damn empathy.

    Severe lack of sleep maybe

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 17:26

:) you'll have to start liking Andy sometime!

I will let him win one, as long as its not against Roger. Thats a big improvement from a few years back!

  • Journeyer08/07/2012 at 17:26

Someone made a good point: Nole, Rafa, and Fed have now won 1 GS each this year. Who wins the tiebreaker in NY? Or will Murray finally sneak through to win?

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 17:26

    Severe lack of sleep maybe

I can't not cry when other people cry. I think I'm going to cry at the Olympics at least 6 times.

  • Lukeh08/07/2012 at 17:27

I can't not cry when other people cry. I think I'm going to cry at the Olympics at least 6 times.

true. I'll cry when the players walk out. I'll cry when someone wins. I'll cry if they cry. I'm screwed.

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:27

I can't not cry when other people cry. I think I'm going to cry at the Olympics at least 6 times.

oh i'm like that too. I'm awful in happy films... in sad films... when people win things... when people loose things.

Someone made a good point: Nole, Rafa, and Fed have now won 1 GS each this year. Who wins the tiebreaker in NY? Or will Murray finally sneak through to win?

Dimitrov! no, wait, that would be Federer again...

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:28

true. I'll cry when the players walk out. I'll cry when someone wins. I'll cry if they cry. I'm screwed.

  • Amy08/07/2012 at 17:30

  • Mr C08/07/2012 at 17:30

@tonyfernandes Devasting to see andy murray lose. But what a gracious loser. He's a winner in my mind today.

  • lou08/07/2012 at 17:30

  • jwcrummett08/07/2012 at 17:30

  • john08/07/2012 at 17:39

roger way too good, mentally alot stronger than murray, until murray learns to keep his emotions (on the court) in check he may struggle against the stronger players because roger nadal and djokovoic are all very tough physically and mentally, but no doubt murray has the talent to win numerous slams, just needs to tighten one aspect of his game and he could make it number one, talent alone he is almost there.

enjoyed talking late night tennis with you over the last 2 weeks, but now i need sleep, 4 hours should be enough before work

    cheers
