The press invite declared "we've got a little more to show you" and months of rumour and speculation appears to have been true. There aren't many left that still deny that Apple is very likely to be launching a smaller iPad to the world and in a short while we will find out for sure. Many have wondered whether it'll be called the Mini, Air, Jr or even iPad Touch but my guess is that it'll be differentiated only by it's size, similar to the MacBook Pro and iMac line-ups. Join us for the special event from the California Theatre in San Jose to see what gadgetry goodies will be vying for a place on this year's wish list.

in the uk @EE have announced 4g data plans today. no mention of tablets. seems an odd time to make an announcement if the ipad is being updated later?

    things i'm hoping for today:

    - full epub3 support in ibooks

    - movie trailer enhancements in itunes (cause http://trailers.apple.com is so much better it hurts)

    - revamp of itunes movie extras (soo crappy right now)

    - updated imacs / mac minis

mostly i'm looking for software updates. happy with whatever hardware comes out.

  • Christine23/10/2012 at 12:30

They revamped iTunes last time. Would they do it again so soon?

  • Christine23/10/2012 at 12:56

    13" Retina MBP

    iTunes 11

    Refreshed 10" iPad with Lightning

New 7.85" iPad [no suffix] in cellular

Think iMac or Mac Mini but not both

    Plus lots of iBook demos

  • Mr C23/10/2012 at 16:41

Plus, tomorrow is already stolen thunder in the tech press

  • jwcrummett23/10/2012 at 16:50

yeah, will have to hear what the reviews say. video editing needs cuda from nvidia

  • littlepurplegoth23/10/2012 at 17:25

Interesting - flash drive is under the trackpad. Might be more vulnerable to liquid spills.

But it probably frees up somewhere else for other tech.

And anywhere is vulnerable to liquid spills if you are a twonk

  • Bassano23/10/2012 at 17:25

  • Andy Taylor23/10/2012 at 17:28

    does it need firewire800 now?

iMacs have is - plus there's obviously room on the back.

MBPro Retinas are too thin, so there's the adapter for those.

  • Mr C23/10/2012 at 17:28

Some of us have FireWire externals

They're only about 40 quid from PC World. You don't need an Apple one.

  • Mr C23/10/2012 at 17:34

apple are not hardware developers, they're scientists.

  • lou23/10/2012 at 17:34

the number of cds i have, and my ridiculous bad luck with internet connections (always always slow for any download) disagrees with you ;)

Interesting - there's plenty of room on the back of that ;)

  • Bassano23/10/2012 at 17:36

This was rumoured a while back for the MBP

  • Mr C23/10/2012 at 17:36

Hybrid drives have been around for a while, this isn't anything new.

i had to actually go to the apple store and get a genius to download mountain lion onto my mac because no internet connection i have access to would download it in anything less than a week.. i couldn't help but think that having to take my mac into the store to download something was a bit backwards. not apples fault. but annoying. :)

  • Andy Taylor23/10/2012 at 17:38

    are they that smart though?

    Yes, they're that smart.

  • jwcrummett23/10/2012 at 17:38

  • jpancoast23/10/2012 at 17:38

    I kinda want an imac.

  • jwcrummett23/10/2012 at 17:39

  • lou23/10/2012 at 17:39

i wonder if i could persuade uni to buy a new imac for the photography mac suite....

  • Mr C23/10/2012 at 17:39

  • littlepurplegoth23/10/2012 at 17:44

Andy says no way sub 250.

I have pointed out that under 250 most school districts don't require a special dispensation per device permission...

  • Mr C23/10/2012 at 17:45

I have pointed out that under 250 most school districts don't require a special dispensation per device permission...

    i ♥ phil.

  • littlepurplegoth23/10/2012 at 17:49

The real problem is school districts having ANY money to buy stuff like this.

Yes, but a lot of schools have money they can't spend without district permission if the per device price is more than xx. take it under that bar and individual funds given or raised direct by the school come into play for these...

  • jwcrummett23/10/2012 at 17:49

  • lou23/10/2012 at 17:53

ohh i think i'd prefer an ipad mini rather than an ipad.. cuteness.

  • Bassano23/10/2012 at 17:53

Without the Nexus though, I'd find it harder to justify the smaller device

  • littlepurplegoth23/10/2012 at 17:53

OK, any residual desire for a kindle has gone...

  • jwcrummett23/10/2012 at 17:54

    Black! Kindle, six foot under...

  • Andy Taylor23/10/2012 at 17:55

i'll have a pretty black one please..

This is the correct (and only rational) choice.

  • jpancoast23/10/2012 at 17:55

    no work for developers.

Yeah, right. I'll believe it when I have one in my hand.

  • Mr C23/10/2012 at 17:55

  • Lynch23/10/2012 at 17:57

this is a bit of a cheap shot....

  • Bassano23/10/2012 at 17:57

Nexus doesn't feel thick or heavy

    And they beat that, nice!

  • Mr C23/10/2012 at 17:58

    And they beat that, nice!

looks as thin as the touch. and that is thin.

  • Bassano23/10/2012 at 17:58

this is a bit of a cheap shot....

It's less than Steve's desire to go thermonuclear on Android

  • littlepurplegoth23/10/2012 at 18:01

I can see the ipad mini becoming a choice device for DJs/Digital musicians... two devices to a gig, new version of Djay that spilts the decks with your phone/opdtouch as the control/mixer device...

  • Mr C23/10/2012 at 18:01

    iPhone 4S CPU?

same as touch. it's just a big touch :)

    Yes. Quite a lot.

I've used it for mentoring, and am talking to a singing teacher atm who would teach via it...

When you spell it incorrectly like that, that is the proper way to pronounce it!

  • Bassano23/10/2012 at 18:06

While the video is on. Anyone know if you can transfer Google Play credit to another account, like a gift?

  • Andy Taylor23/10/2012 at 18:06

They are using the English pronunciation of Aluminium.

That's because the International Chemical Union specified that the correct spelling of Aluminium is Aluminium.*

Or it's because Jony Ive is British :)

*We have to spell Sulphur with an f. Fine by me.

It's cute and I can see it would be good for people that want one but don't want to shell out for the full one. Personally, if I want small I have phone, if I want big I have iPad. Small iPad is no use :)

My biggest gripe is no ADSL compatibility. Hence buying a new NetGear router a week or so back. Yes, NetGear. iOS 6 works just fine with it.

  • littlepurplegoth23/10/2012 at 18:32

Do you type on a device that small when it's on it's back?

yes. I did a lot when I had the iPod touch 3rd gen. it too wobbled horribly under speed. Ended up with a wireless keyboard which was, well, a bit incongruous (being umpteen times the size of the device).

Drove me back to pen and paper for everything of length for a while. Phone not so bad. But this pretty is best :-)

  • Bassano23/10/2012 at 18:33

Ha! didn't used to do that til you mentioned it. but still type properly for speed! Small hands have their advantages.

Oooo I bet I could get up quick a speed on the ipad mini

Also, Milton Keynes sufferes the double whammy of aluminium cabling and phone lines routed around 3 sides of the grid roads. Fine for telephony but useless for anything else.
