Good morning, Sidepodcasters!

Are you enjoying this long weekend? The Royal Wedding was celebrated yesterday, and yes! Finally William and Kate got married in Westminster Abbey, but, talking in terms of money, was the wedding good for the British economy?

If you live in Britain you are heading into the second day of this particular weekend. If not, don't worry. The world is very big and full of unlucky people, who had to go to work/study yesterday... Yes, I didn't stay resting at home, instead of this I got up at 06:30am and went to my High School. How lovely my routine is!

Would you like to take a look at the images of the Royal Wedding? Here is a gallery, made by the BBC, and here is another, made by the Spanish newspaper 'La Vanguardia'.

Let's talk about Formula 1. Jarno Trulli thinks drivers would spend too much time focused on pressing the right buttons if the FIA allowed them to use the DRS system in Monaco. Talking to Autosport, he said:

It is not a benefit and won't help you at all for overtaking, so I don't think there is any point to run it.

Jarno Trulli

Adam Parr is confident about Williams. He thinks the season has just started, and Williams can still bounce back.

We come here to win, but we've finished eighth, seventh and sixth in the last three years and I wanted to take another step. So fifth, minimum would be good. We are only three races in, this is a long season and it's not game over yet.

Adam Parr

Rubens Barrichello has been interviewed by F1's website journalists, who asked the Brazilian driver about his thoughts about the sport, in a fantasy way. He'd like F1 to race at Argentina and Rio, his fantasy teammate would be Ayrton Senna and, if he was a team boss, his perfect line up would be Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica. Do you want a read more?.

Yesterday Nicolas Hamilton, Lewis Hamilton's brother, survived a big crash in a testing session. He is OK, but he might not be able to race this weekend.

This weekend F3 Euroseries' drivers are competing at the Hockenheim circuit. The Spaniards drivers Roberto Merhi and Daniel Juncadella set the two fastest times of the first Qualifying (the one that decides driver's positions on the grid for the first race), while the German Marco Whittmann got the pole on the second Qualifying (relevant for the third race of the weekend). You can visit F3 Euroseries official website for more info.

So those are some of the highlights of the four-wheeled motorsports, but there's a MotoGP Grand Prix this weekend too!

Have a great day!

Another new daily writer, yay Marti!!

  • RG29/04/2011 at 23:11

This week's dailys is like the U18s being drafted into the first team to replace an injury hit squad and then beating the opposition 4-0.

    Good stuff Marti

  • Pat W29/04/2011 at 23:14

Great Daily, Marti! I like the fresh perspectives.

I'm hopeful for Williams, I really am.. but that's true of every year. Parr is right though, people keep writing them off but they keep improving their WCC position. 5th might be too optimistic though, 6th is more likely but I hope they go for it.

Trulli seems to be saying an awful lot lately about DRS..

  • Lukeh29/04/2011 at 23:14

What a fascinating fun rubens interview that is.

  • Steven Roy29/04/2011 at 23:17

    Great post Marti.

I didn't pay any attention to the wedding today but looking at the BBC pics I see the Queen and archbishop both wore the same colour. You would think they could have discussed it.

Adam Parr has to talk a good game. His neck is as much on the line as Sam Michael's.

  • Pat W29/04/2011 at 23:17

Okay, so I don't want to take the shine off the wonderful Daily it just came down to coincidental timing, so read that first.

But I have something I've been working on for much of the day.

I think that sounds about right, also I don't really understand the doubts about their future. Maybe it's just me being naive but I don't think Williams will be going out of f1 any time soon either

They ditched a promising driver for a sponsored one who has failed to shine so far [abeit in a terrible car]

They need to recreate the magic and bring in a lot of fresh blood, in my eyes

i would absolutely love to go to a GP this year but i realistically don't think i have the money. Am hoping i can make it to goodwood otherwise maybe no F1 cars for me this year *sobs*..next year though.. pick a place (not monaco or somewhere ridiculously expensive) and i'll give myself enough time to save.

    Kai wants to go

    To Goodwood, that is

I saw my first ad for it today, a massive LED billboard on the M4 with a Red Bull

  • lou29/04/2011 at 23:36

    Kai wants to go

to goodwood? i've seen her chatting about it. If i can find a place to stay (although i'm hoping i'll be a) driving and b) have a house in Farnham) i'll try get to Goodwood for at least 2 days. it's become my anual holiday and i'm not sure i could deal with not having my 4th year in a row there :)

My stranger (for my documentary project) took me to Chichester for the day, took us just under an hour. It's not ideal cause after 3 days at the festival i was knackered last year, however if i'm going for 3 days again i can afford to have a lie in each day.. kinda.

    Do it

I cannot as it's my niece's wedding and she would be minus one usher and a fantastic uncle if I did

i will try my very best. i need to set aside money and things cause money is a bit complicated atm. but i think it's got to the stage where i'm not sure i can not go to goodwood.. even if it's just for one day (of course the day that JB goes) omg i miss the sound of an f1 car.

The decision makers may make these decisions but they reflect badly on their entire companies and thus their decisions come back to bite them (in theory, at least).

I always wondered what Labor Day [note spelling ;)]

Something about wearing white but I thought it was in the Autumn

  • Bassano30/04/2011 at 00:10

We have a network wide change blackout until Sunday morning because of the wedding (which means we can only make emergency changes to the network, servers, etc., just to minimize the chance of us blowing things up).

Our shops have a similar ethic this weekend on accepting dollars :D

  • jpancoast30/04/2011 at 00:10

I think it is because it's also Labour Day (which is fixed to the same date because of of the Haymarket Riot of Chicago on May 1 1886).

our Labor day is in september. Monday isn't a holiday over here, what holiday is it over there? May day?

Which means I can soon whip out one of my favorite jonathan coulton songs, "First of May"

  • Jordan F130/04/2011 at 00:10

I remember our tour person saying on the first day just to cross the road cos they'll only stop if you walk in front of them.

That sounds about right. Naples is the only place in the world where I've ever seen non-helpful flashing lights at major junctions at night.

I can only imagine it was a caution akin to "there is a junction here"

For some strange reason, I always believed that in Quebec City, "Arrete" means "Run over the English bugger trying to cross the road"....

  • Alianora La Canta30/04/2011 at 00:11

Oops - I got the spelling from the Big Issue because it's an internationally-recognised protest day, but since the USA invented it, its spelling probably should prevail ;)

Yeah, there are still some of us who wish we hadn't fought the war.

I am NOT one of them! ;)

    "AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

  • Bassano30/04/2011 at 00:32

OK, I figured it was something similar but wondered if it was related to a zoo trip causing such behaviour :D

Not specifically. The zoo was in the hallways, and in the classroom if I let it, which I didn't, of course.

Teachers come up with lots of interesting terms, to be sure. I'm sure I've heard others use it, but it may be that I've twisted the term/word. I guess I tend to do that.

Yeah, the kids were zoo-y, or zoo-ey, I guess. I've never written it before. They have a big 3 day trip starting Monday, and it got warm, and they are really feeling done with school when we have 2 MONTHs to go. ugh.

If they're not, then they just crash :)

  • Steven Roy30/04/2011 at 00:58

ooh. How? I've never learned this.

    They don't glide. They auto-rotate.

Helicopter pilots have to land them with the engine off as part of their test

  • Bassano30/04/2011 at 00:58

ooh. How? I've never learned this.

Point the nose down, the air will turn the rotors and help the descent

  • Bassano30/04/2011 at 00:58

    They don't glide. They auto-rotate.

    Ok, point taken

You can tell I'm not a props guy

  • Steven Roy30/04/2011 at 00:59

ooh. How? I've never learned this.

The rotor is wing shaped so as the helicopter drops like a stone the airflow over the rotor cause it to turn creating lift and slowing the rate of descent

  • Bassano30/04/2011 at 01:00

    They don't glide. They auto-rotate.

    Though technically, it is correct

make an unpowered flight, either in a glider or in an aircraft with engine failure.

Big deal....Everything can glide when launched from a catapult, evn an F-14....! (So says the USAF pilots. to the USN pilots....).

I have a mate who flies them and he has been nagging me for years to go up. I like engines. No way am I going to just hang about in the sky for hours.

He and a bunch of his flying mates went gliding in Spain. One of them hit a stork and ripped off one of his wings.

    Kai, Christine: what about ballooning?

I feel like ballooning would be one step above gliding because you have fire to play with but all are quite low down on the list of methods for travel.

That's true, But then there's me piloting in the front side, either screaming tht we are out of fuel... (Which is absolutly correct, gliders not having a fuel tank to begin with) or putting both my hands behind my head, while the glider is in level flight...

  • Bassano30/04/2011 at 01:07

    That seems horrible

I've never tried it but gliding, skydiving and flying is fun

  • Christine30/04/2011 at 01:09

I don't know what it is for me. I've flown a few times and I've been in a helicopter and all have been perfectly fine. But I have nightmares of planes just dropping out of the sky and when I see them flying above me it freaks me out.

I have no explanation for it.

Hot air balloons go directly over my place in the summer. I've waved and shouted hello to them, and they hear me, that's how close they are. It does seem very peaceful.

  • Christine30/04/2011 at 01:12

I'm very good at allaying flying fears, ask Kai

  • Steven Roy30/04/2011 at 01:12

Everyone has these kind of fears about something or other. As long as it has an engine and I am inside I am happy

  • Kai30/04/2011 at 01:12

    Simple physics, understanding is everything

  • Jordan F130/04/2011 at 01:14

Skydiving I can never figure out. Who wants to jump out of a perfectly airworthy airplane anyway ?

That is not just the pilot in me speaking either....

  • Christine30/04/2011 at 01:14

Nwxt Sidepod meeting, you and I should chat.

Definitely. Although, I know all about the fact that it's the safest way to travel and all that.

It's not a proper fear. I've probably watched too many films or something.

  • Bassano30/04/2011 at 01:14

Everyone has these kind of fears about something or other. As long as it has an engine and I am inside I am happy

They would need to give me valium

    Valium IV drip. :)

  • Kai30/04/2011 at 01:14

It's not a proper fear. I've probably watched too many films or something.

Yeah, my mind/imagination is the worst part of it.

  • Bassano30/04/2011 at 01:14

Imagine standing on a wicker basket with a 5000 foot drop. Horrible

    Wimps :D

  • Steven Roy30/04/2011 at 01:15

Having control of something seems better than leaving it to air flows :)

Feeling like you are in control even if you are not really makes everything less scary. Like a car on a track. You feel calm and in total control even just after you dropped the damn thing and stuck it in a barrier

  • Bassano30/04/2011 at 01:16

Skydiving I can never figure out. Who wants to jump out of a perfectly airworthy airplane anyway ?

That is not just the pilot in me speaking either....

Those 15-30 secs of freefall... simply amazing

  • Bassano30/04/2011 at 01:16

Definitely. Although, I know all about the fact that it's the safest way to travel and all that.

Yeah, statistics never set the mind at rest

  • Bassano30/04/2011 at 01:17

Those 15-30 secs of freefall... simply amazing

The hardest part is leaning forward out of the open door :D

  • Steven Roy30/04/2011 at 01:18

So you're not going gliding either?

I have had the chance to go gliding and turned it down. I used to work with a nutter who had hang gliders and microlights and turned down dozens of chances to fly with him. One of the other guys at work did fly with him once and the pilot said to him to check the engine at the back because it sounded funny. He looked over his shoulder and the little mail plane was very close behind heading straight for them.

I want engines and radar and stuff

  • jpancoast30/04/2011 at 01:18

Those 15-30 secs of freefall... simply amazing

my wife wants to skydive. I told her no. She then reminded me that I want to race cars. I've since dropped the subject, hoping it never comes up again :)

in all honesty, I would go skydiving if I could, but I probably can't (lung problems). I need to consult with a lung doctor type person to see if it's ok and it's not exactly high on my priorities right now :)

  • Kai30/04/2011 at 01:21

Feeling like you are in control even if you are not really makes everything less scary. Like a car on a track. You feel calm and in total control even just after you dropped the damn thing and stuck it in a barrier

Control is the key for me, or the illusion of it. We don't control anything on this planet, but we like to feel we do. If a balloon pilot said "just tell me if/when you want to land and we will", then I'd feel a lot better about it. But the wind would help him decide that.

  • Jordan F130/04/2011 at 01:21

I think a lot of people fears of flying are actually issues of control at heart. Try one of those introductory flights and aski the instructor if you could control the aircraft for a few minuts would really help get rid of those silly imaginations if you got to pilot a real airplane yourself Chrisitne.

Of course, the more basic the cockpit controls, the easier it is for you to understand it.

  • Steven Roy30/04/2011 at 01:21

You shouldn't feel the wind in a balloon because you are moving at the same speed as the air

  • Kai30/04/2011 at 01:24

I've been a passenger in a single engine Cessna-type plane several times and sat in the co-pilot's seat and helped the pilot watch for planes while we flew in between the clouds. There was definite beauty, and I trusted the pilot completely because I knew the hundreds of hours of flying time he put in, but it still made me nervous.

  • Steven Roy30/04/2011 at 01:25

Your body will feel the horizontal movement though

You will feel acceleration in all axes but it shouldn't be windy in the basket

That reminds me from my first issue of Panda Propaganda, have you figured out how to hunt down the Lock Ness Monste yet? Without a way of going underwater, it is going to be rather hard to find it, I think....

There's a very small zone where something is just scary enough, like a few rollercoasters for me, like Space Mountain in Disneyworld, Florida. It took 3 tries to actually get on the thing, but once I did I wanted to go again and again. But other rollercoasters I've been on have been too scary and too fast and made me sick. It's the Goldilocks theory of rollercoasters, I guess. It has to be just right.

I can kind of understand it with something you are just sitting there doing nothing on but not in a plane or a car or something you are controlling

Much the same thing. They must have radar for running on the surface and finding their way around before the days of satnav

Going to my first outdoor karting event tomorrow, wondering if this time I'll be scared :). We're going to try and qualify for the 70+mph karts for the next time we race there... Hopefully we can!

Too cold in Loch Ness for that. You need Arctic survival gear

You need either a 7 mm (1/4 inch thick wetsuit, or a Drysuit) for Northern Waters Steven. With those, especially the drysuit, people actually dive under the ice!

This place is supposed to have lots of grip. In contrast to one of the indoor places I race at most of the time, which is very slick, so it requires a lot more skill in keeping the kart pointed in the right direction.

  • Steven Roy30/04/2011 at 01:45

    Just you

    Pretty much

I didn't say that, you must've have one

20 maybe, when the apocolypse comes. But not one

  • Jordan F130/04/2011 at 02:20

Honestly, I can see how I can get "god" from mistyping "good", and switiching two letters because the later finger is a split second faster than the first, but three letters I have to stop and think to do...

You will find that Sidepodcast does that to you, Kai. I noticed that I have developed the habit of spelling the word "tire" from my correct Canadian spelling to the British "tyre", but I keep my Candian spelling if it is shared with the British spelling, so metres, litres and colours.

Yes. I have to rethink now about s's and z's, like in recognize/recognise. See? I get a red squiggle for the second one...oh, but you can't see that, in fact.

What really gets me about technical English is why is the thing that routes (Say it as in Route 66) packets of data to computers is called a ROUT - ER as a ROUT describles a bunch of soldiers fleeing from a battlefield for their lives in total panic and choas.

ROUTERS are designed to have a have a very logical way of figuring out which pack ofinformation goes where.

Imagine 100 - 150 cars from F1 to Indy to Nascar to anything you can imagine of all ages. Drivers from current F1, Indy, Nascar etc to all the legends of the sport.

There is a hill climb course that the cars go up. Some cruise up. Current F1 cars tend to do lots of wheelspinning and others really go for it. In addition to the hillclimb and static displays there is a rally stage running with some of the greatest rally drivers and cars in history.

Alex may have played it, they have mellowed but their initial stuff was great. Like early Strokes

  • Kai30/04/2011 at 04:34

I'm in between musical tastes right now, unsettled, not sure what to listen to. I go through these phases, and usually classic stuff helps me to settle, like this.

Your Time is Gonna Come, Led Zeppelin

But that's not hitting the spot these days.

New ones don't, hence why it's a new old one. The trouble is that I've yet to see a smartphone that does everything I use my PDA for unless I'm willing to shell out a lot of money.

    Morning everyone :)

  • Alianora La Canta30/04/2011 at 10:57

Wow, what does it do that smartphones cant?

It allows the production of Word documents and Excel spreadsheets using a keyboard with all essential keys, view Powerpoint presentations, draw better than the program that comes with Windows (though not as well as GIMP, let alone paid-for drawing programs) due to the stylus, read two different formats of ebook and both produces and plays back video in a widely-recognised format (I don't think smartphones do that yet but that's the one feature I expect to happen in the near future out of this list). It can also do basic CAD, though I haven't seriously used that feature. Also, if you don't like any given feature, it's easy to get several alternatives, usually free.

All that and it also doesn't expect anything resembling an all-you-can-eat data package or a micro-SIM.

    Donington Historic at, er, Donington.

have you been since they rebuilt it?

That reminds me, Lou was asking this question a week or two ago to me but I'm still not totally sure, how did they recover the big hole and whatnot in the circuit? Obviously the track is operational again now with Touring Cars and the like on it but do they still have that giant hole in the middle or anything?

  • Pat W30/04/2011 at 11:49

have you been since they rebuilt it?

No, last I heard the middle was still a building site.

Got two chances to go this year, the other is WTCC/AutoGP but that's so close to Goodwood I might not have any money left after FoS. :)

I'm 70-30 towards Donington, the 6am alarm call is putting me off though.

Donington has historic touring cars, sportscars from 60s, 70s, and Group C sportscar from the 80s, Group B rally cars from the 80s,

Thruxton has a BTCC that isn't what it once was, lots of unknown names (to me) after the big names vanished, and support series struggling to fill grids.

That I think is a decision made.

    great daily marti!

just to add to the DRS conversation, here's some thought from manipe: http://www.manipef1.com/blog/articles/74/

A ban of any kind on the DRS in Monaco would be a blatant sanitisation of the true essence of Formula One racing – the challenge placed on the world's best drivers to steer a motor car around a track in the fastest possible way. The day that challenge is taken away is the day Formula One dies.

  • gnj30/04/2011 at 12:07

If that were true, they'd let the teams decide whether to refuel during the race, and which tyres for which stints to use.

Seems weird to me that she is so bothered. It must be more healthy to either have a friendly breakup where you still care about each other, or ignore them for the rest of your life.

Where's the sense in just following and criticising from a distance?

  • Lukeh30/04/2011 at 12:25

Where's the sense in just following and criticising from a distance?

even worse when you broadcast it on such a public platform too like twitter. If it still upsets her she's better off just not following him and just focusing on her career...

Seems weird to me that she is so bothered. It must be more healthy to either have a friendly breakup where you still care about each other, or ignore them for the rest of your life.

I only knew they had broken up because she tweets thinly veiled insults about him and what hes doing quite often, and they were blatant messages back when it actually happened which is why I'm kind of shocked every time someone doesn't know.

I've never seen him mention it at all on twitter. I definitely think in this case he's using it better than her :D

He didn't stick with any of Korea's deadlines, so I don't see any reason why things would be different now. Personally I'm expecting a decision (one way or the other) in about August - note that by the FIA's regulations, that would normally be enough time for a race due to happen in November.

Bernie's trying to box him into a corner by telling Bahrain they'll get an extension, he's testing Todt who would rather be consensual and have lots of dialogue behind the scenes. He wants Todt to back down, be interesting if he stands the FIA's ground and says 'No'.

Bernie will get that - not because he boxed Jean into a corner but because that's how Jean appears to run the FIA anyway. It makes Bernie feel powerful without impairing the FIA's power any further than it would limit itself if Bernie hadn't done anything.

A ban of any kind on the DRS in Monaco would be a blatant sanitisation of the true essence of Formula One racing – the challenge placed on the world's best drivers to steer a motor car around a track in the fastest possible way. The day that challenge is taken away is the day Formula One dies.

DRS isn't about steering (especially not at Monaco where there are no corners fast enough to even think about trying to use it round a corner). It's about straight lines. At least with it taken away we might get overtaking battles in the last half of the race...

  • Mr C30/04/2011 at 14:15

I don't see the problem as a safety one - Manipe is quite right to criticise that notion. For me, it's partly down to the unusually large problems for everyone else in the likely event of people getting it wrong (a slight error will almost certainly cause a red flag, which spoils everyone's running) and partly because of the vastly increased probability of getting it wrong. I'd put a ban on DRS in Monaco in the same category as making it mandatory to use extreme wet-weather tyres for Safety Car starts - with the awareness that they're controversial for similar reasons despite that explanation.

  • Alianora La Canta30/04/2011 at 14:27

Also, the Chinese "phantom deployment" means that unlike DRS, the teams and drivers wouldn't even necessarily need to do anything wrong to cause inadvertent problems for everyone else.

  • Mr C30/04/2011 at 14:27

For me, it's partly down to the unusually large problems for everyone else in the likely event of people getting it wrong

if that was an issue though, you'd never let yamamoto near an f1 track. surely the superlicence sorts out the people who can drive, from those who cannot?

  • Mr C30/04/2011 at 14:28

if that was an issue though, you'd never let yamamoto near an f1 track. surely the superlicence sorts out the people who can drive, from those who cannot?

It doesn't. It sorts the people who have X achievements in lower formulae or who a committee think could get X achievements from those who can't. There's also an issue concerning scale of error needed - DRS tends to generate far more disproportionate consequences for slight errors than other things. While this is normally an asset at tracks where there's enough space for a wrecked car to be cleared under double-waved yellow flags, it's decidedly not so at Monaco, where everyone who drives correctly could easily find themselves losing a lot of time just because one or two other people missed the mark.

  • Mr C30/04/2011 at 14:33

kimi and sutil. no DRS involved.

i don't think the weekend will be significantly worse with DRS enabled. people run out of talent at all the wrong times, if anything it'll expose those with less to spare :)

  • Journeyer30/04/2011 at 14:38

faster-wearing tyres this year. we just might see a sequel of that.

true, but as Alia said, a crash here is more likely to affect everyone, not just those who crashed.

  • Alianora La Canta30/04/2011 at 14:38

kimi and sutil. no DRS involved.

Lack of engaged brain and no red flag involved. Of course, that was because Kimi's error pitched him into a straight line during the race - had he gone sideways or the accident occurred in practise/qualifying, there would probably have been a red flag.

But if Kimi had DRS engaged when he'd hit that bump, he'd have been going faster, had more kinetic energy outside of his control and therefore a) probably hit the bump less straight (pitching him into the wall instead of down the straight and theoretically across the chicane run-off) and b) been going faster on impact (meaning more and bigger bits spreading further - he might have missed Adrian by spearing into a wall, but the Ferrari was made of equally fragile bits), increasing the probability of Safety Car/red flag.

  • Jordan F130/04/2011 at 14:40

Morning from Bright Sunny Tundraland, everyone.....

Just lurtking in the moments until I could form an opionion on a couple of issues....

    1) DRS at Monaco, ==> You know, with cases in recent memory of our Absolute Best drivers in F1 crashing into each other following the safety car around the bend in the tunnel of Monaco, maybe it is a good thing that DRS is not palnned to be used.

Ultimately, the very last thing you need is a massive lose of downforce in Monaco, which is the basic function of reducing the angle of the rear wing. (DRS). The by product of this the decrease in drag, and voila, your car is faster....

    2) Bahrain ==> That's a tough one.

I guess ultimatly it is up to the individual to balance whether or not they have the integrity to actually go to Bahrain and try to change the politcial situation themselves or not. If not then no matter how good or rightous you feel you are still supporting evil by doing nothing.

If you do go be aware that you might not even get a grave stone highlightting your integrity... Tough choice, but to make light I will share one story - one day I was really, really sick and a friend came over to visit. He was so shocked at my appeareance That he could not tell if I was going to die on the gallows or of the bug.I had

I told him that it him it depended on whether I embraced his principals or his girlfriend.....

  • Mr C30/04/2011 at 14:41

it makes no odds though really. he screwed up someone else's race due to making a mistake. that's motor racing.

And what of those of us who don't get to go to Bahrain whether we want to or not? Disagreeing with the regime is a lot better than doing nothing, as the Tunisian and Egyptian protesters discovered earlier this year.

That's also something the governors of motor racing seek to reduce - a certain amount of race demolition by proxy is inevitable but done to excess and it removes the racing from the equation. In the specific case of DRS, it could potentially become a question of who predicts when someone will hit the wrong button best (and plans qualifying appropriately).

i think the DRS is overrated. if the ban stays and we get an overtaking-fest at Monaco anyway, it should be dumped for 2012, no?

was it the best one ever? it was a VERY good race, yes, but not the best ever for me. i'd rank japan 2005, belgium 2000, and brazil 2008 over that race. we won't understand what works and what doesn't work until we can see each component work in isolation.

i also think DRS is overrated because many of that race's passes (including the race-winning one) did not happen at the DRS zone.

From 2009, I'd say "not KERS", but clearly it is too early to say whether it's DRS, tyres, both combined or some other factor...

it keeps cars closer together for turns 2,3,4 etc.

the race-winning pass happened somewhere in sector 2 - i doubt the DRS still has any effect after Turn 4.

also, given there's one turn in between the hairpin and the start-finish, the DRS effect is also greatly reduced by that point.

  • Journeyer30/04/2011 at 15:02

You don't have to be anywhere near a target provided you are in a position to either trigger some kind of consequence that a target does not want to happen, or be able to join part of a group that can trigger/help to trigger said consequences. Due to mass media and the internet, anyone with an internet connection can now do that to some extent to anyone else with an internet connection - or, indirectly, to anyone with an internet connection able to visit a kind of negative consequence a target cares about.

Indeed, in this post http://www.formula1.com/news/interviews/2011/4/11975.html from the daily he says The only thing probably that drivers don’t like - because you want to go fast - is the fact that the cars are heavy at the start of the race. So the refuelling pit stops were great - maybe not that safe, but then if you crash on a full tank that’s not the safest either. I think the cars were better to drive - and faster - with less fuel.

IndyCar racing in Sao Paulo on the anniversary of Senna's death could be quite emotional tomorrow, especially if a Brazilian wins. Marshall Pruett has a nice article.

Here in Barcelona we grow up speaking two languages: The Spanish and the Catalan. The second one is original from Catalonia (click to see the map).

Lots of people study other languages, but English it's the most common.

I learned all about Catalan when I went to Barcelona because everyone said that people would be nicer to me if I spoke that rather than Spanish.

In the end I just spoke English and everyone understood me anyway. I felt guilty about that :)

  • MartiV830/04/2011 at 18:27

Yes, we have a little feeling of independance and obviously Catalan is our original language, not Spanish, but we spoke and study both of them hehe.

In fact, there was a popular referendum about Catalonia's independance. In Barcelona the 'Yes' won with a 92% (20% of population voted). The referendum was not organized by the government.

Well, you went to the effort of learning it just in case it came in useful and that's the main thing. If everyone managed to communicate with you in English just fine, there's no need to feel guilty about your host country's reciprocal gesture.

Yes. Imola held one of the most tragical GP of the whole F1 history.

I think Max Mosley went to Roland's burial, instead of going to Ayrton's, because the whole motorsport big chiefs where going to Senna's one.

    Good decision.

After half million gallons of hydrogen were removed from the external fuel tank and the tank went through all the procedures to make sure there is not even a little hydrogen left behind because it is explosive work began on finding the cause of yesterday's heater failures. It took until 2 hours ago for the launch pad area to be cleared for people to work in and now technicians are entering the shuttle's aft compartment to diagnose the fault.
