This should be an interesting daily post considering I haven't a clue as to what has been going on, F1 or otherwise. I can't even remember when I last commented on Sidepodcast! This has to be the longest time that the doohicky has not been open on my computer but whilst I have work to do it will have to stay this way as much as I hate it!

  • In case you were not aware, Mr C has been making some changes to the homepage. All of which I have to say I really like even though now when I look at sites all I can think about and see is code, thanks to several weeks of staring at lines and lines of the stuff.
  • In some MFC news, Hulu have apparently shelved plans to launch in the UK with negotiations with British broadcasters falling through. I didn't realise Hulu wanted to come to the UK but I'm not surprised at the news after all the BBC have iPlayer and ITV have something similar.
  • Venezuela leader Hugo Chavez has joined twitter, joining a group of world leaders who are using twitter to share their thoughts. Of all the world leaders currently using twitter Barack Obama has the highest number of followers (approaching 4 million).
  • I didn't mention Doctor Who once in my post last week, so I think that needs to be put right; BlogtorWho have a video from last weeks confidential looking at the new computer outing, Doctor Who: The Adventure Games. I am really looking forward to playing this, the first episode, 'City Of The Daleks', will be released on June 5. During David Tennant's time as the Doctor the BBC site gave us videos on the 'Big Questions' relating (slightly) to the episode that had just aired. They have continued this with Matt Smith's Doctor and I have to say I love them, Matt and Karen are brilliant together!

I can only hope I manage to put something better together next week, this is the result of opening Google Reader and seeing what had happened recently. Last week I finished the post by stealing Christine's line of 'I shall see you in the comments', with the big stack of work I have to get through it is highly unlikely to happen any time soon! I do though hope you all have a good day, even if it is Thursday!

They were only offered September as part of the travel plans.

It's like one of those dotty pictures that if you squint at for long enough a picture of a boat appears... squint at the 2011 calendar long enough and you might see some logic to the travel plan. Maybe.

    Hahahah! Oh dear.

I have a feeling that when Jordon changed their livery to Buzzin' Hornets, it was a smokescreen for Benson & Hedges. Just a sneaky suspicion is all. ;)

  • Maverick29/04/2010 at 09:59

    Hahahah! Oh dear.

Does sound like it started on the letters page...

"This Sunday afternoon I was at a loose end as the bridge club was unfortunately cancelled at short notice. I therefore decided to sit down and watch some television. Switching on I discovered that the motor racing was on which I hadn't seen for years. It wasn't as good as the old days though, Stirling Moss wasn't even taking part. Before I knew it I was off down to the shops for a packet of cigarettes. The cause was those Italians and their red cars. Afterall, the site of the smoke billowing from Fernando Alonso's blown engine with that barcode design below it is enough to make anyone think of cigarettes."

  • Maverick29/04/2010 at 10:02

    Or...

"After watching the 1-2 victory by Ferrari this weekend I was suddenly possessed by the urge to have a cigarette. Followed shortly afterwards by facing a firing squad.

indeed, just reading a letter from steve: http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/

Bit of a bog standard thursday, have been a bit lazy today.

  • Lukeh29/04/2010 at 16:54

indeed, just reading a letter from steve: http://www.app...ws/thoughts-on-flash/

Interesting read and I find it hard to argue with Steve's position regarding flash. I like how Adobe feel mobile users are missing out of Flash games :)

What do you find easier to work with Mr C?

  • lou29/04/2010 at 16:54

ooo that was interesting. Nice to read about apple's reasons for not using flash, a few digs at adobe too lol

"although Mac OS X has been shipping for almost 10 years now, Adobe just adopted it fully (Cocoa) two weeks ago when they shipped CS5"

    unfortunate but true.

What do you find easier to work with Mr C?

i despise flash programming, i've only done a little but it is a hopeless case.

i've always felt the problem was, adobe are a design company, they just don't understand developers at all.

microsoft understand devs better than apple, but apple are still head and shoulders above adobe.

on windows it's been lovely for the past... well since forever. cs3/4 were terrible on a mac though.

it's not quite the same, but i have adobe fireworks on the mac and it crashes every time you shut the application. it's been doing that since i installed snow leopard and i understand photoshop does the same.

imagine if photoshop hung each time you quit?

Yep. That would certifiably drive me insane after a week. That's just madness, I get annoyed as it is with a program when it hangs after quitting anyways, but every single time...? Madness.

who's interest is it to do that though? it'll have to be a small company like panic.

microsoft want silverlight to power the web, adobe - flash and apple only care about apps. who else is there capable of making an IDE that good?

As far as I'm aware the reason that iTunes hasn't been ported on the mac is because they'd have to write a whole new emulator for the pc. They don't want to fork the codebase.

Well I don't know really. How do you measure productivity?

I am more productive without hinting because it doesn't drive me crazy. I'm more like a PM though. I am not really supposed to be coding all day. When I do code all day I do get things done and ship. I don't miss deadlines.

  • Alex Andronov29/04/2010 at 18:17

  • Alex Andronov29/04/2010 at 18:22

i can't fathom how you'd ever debug anything, but each to their own :)

I do like debugging helpers and things. I do have to use IDEs from time to time (I'm looking at you VBA)... But I guess I learned to program in dynamic languages when you had to use it to run it. So tend to code in print debugging code that gives me things to the screen and see the output. It was all you could do back in the day, and I'm stuck with it now (in my brain).

I haven't had to do any serious HTML debugging in awhile, and any javascript makes me want to castrate myself to end the pain, but Chrome's developer tools seem pretty cool.

I do use an IDE for SQL... And it's a huge time saver... But I never seem to use the debug feature in there or the crazy drawing thing with tables and lines *urgh* But I do use the immediate query result thing all the time. And messages and everything.

how do you debug a java app with print statements?

    System.out.println( "what I want to print" );

    Sheesh! ;)

there's also printStackTrace() for exceptions, most objects have a toString() method so you can print an object and it'll dump a lot of it's info.

To be honest, I've never really thought about it. My first language I really started with seriously was Perl about 15 - 20 years ago and it's just the way I've always done it.

i see. how bad can it be?

It does the job and as you say, it's free, so I can't complain with that. I just found over the past 3 years it has a fond relationship with crashing :P we did 99% of our coding in uni on it for the various languages we were studying and one day it would have been perfectly fine, the next day the plug ins wouldnt load, it'd require extra stuff to be downloaded, the libraries wouldnt get recognised etc...

From experience when it works it works. When it's having a bad day, it'll make sure you have one too

christine just found topgear is in HD on itunes.

if there's one tv show to showcase awesome cinematography in hd... well it's probably planet earth ...but top gear must be a close second.

is it wrong to buy a tv show for the pretty pictures, knowing you'll probably watch with the sound down?

  • Steven Roy29/04/2010 at 19:24

nope... not when it's awesome... i know what you mean by the awesome cinematography. However it depends on the episode, price and whether there is anything better in HD on itunes ;)

you'd be surprised, but there is bugger all. so far, i've bought planet earth, lost and... shooting stars. one of which didn't exactly tax the hd decoder.

itunes won't let you buy HD movies only rent them, so i'm on the lookout for showcase tv programmes.

  • Steven Roy29/04/2010 at 19:33

    You can. BBC HD channel.

Didn't realise they had that. Not a huge choice of programs and no Top Gear

  • me29/04/2010 at 19:34

    You can. BBC HD channel.

    two serious problems:

    a) iplayer is in flash, so kills the processor and ramps up the laptop heat

    b) it's not very high quality HD. better than SD, but nothing to write home about

  • me29/04/2010 at 19:35

Nice! Have you all heard of Yndi Halda? I mentioned them ages ago but have lost track of them myself, must see if they've done new stuff.

Btw how does Steve get that apparently authoritative voice from such a weedy body? Must be some sort of setting because he can't really talk like that. #hasafairlyweedybodyandwantsabettervoice
