Well, what a day for Mark Webber! Just as we thought everything was calming down, the poor guy hits the headlines for all the wrong reasons. However, there's plenty of other things up for discussion, so let's have a quick rundown:
- Supposedly, Bernie has said there won't be any French Grand Prix until 2011, as Euro Disney pulled out and he can't get his way with the Paris street race. What do you think about this? Should we have France on the calendar? Or does this just leave more room for Canada to return?
- As mentioned above and in this blog post, Webber was involved in an accident. We wish him well, of course, and a speedy recovery, but we'll post any updates in the comments here.
- We're asking for your feedback. Okay, this one is a blatant plug and not really an anticipated discussion topic for this thread. But it's worth pointing out. Let us know what you think about the shows we make.
- We've updated the header again, yet another great submission from Dirty Scarab. Let us know how you like this one, and don't forget if you're feeling artistic you can always submit your own.
- Also, Dank left a comment letting us know that a Baby DC had entered the world. Haven't seen this reported anywhere else yet, but congratulations to them, anyway!
As ever, feel free to discuss anything that is on your mind and don't be limited by what I've mentioned above. We'll be recording some shows later today, so don't forget to stay tuned for an up to date schedule.
Go Webber! It's a less cheeky way of saying...
first!
:P
awww. best first ever :)
Thank you! Good morning! :D
howdy.
just listening to fighting talk and there's a guy on this week who's obsessed by panda's... boy did he pick the wrong panel show.
If anyone mentions cupcakes you know that fighting talk are copying sidepodpanel
in fairness, we could hardly complain.
Considering how sensitive the BBC is to criticism now you never know what you could get away with.
i'll start spamming their forums now :)
sidepodspace update
The third spacewalk has just finished and both astronauts are bak in the airlock and plugging their suits into the mains. They managed to get more done than they were scheduled to.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. :P
Hahaha!
Ooooh, good on them! One more spacewalk left, right?
martinsomeoneorother just won this week's fighting talk, because... he mentioned a panda in his answer:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00fhp54/Fighting_Talk_22112008/
Yes. The final spacewalk is on Monday. The shuttle is scheduled to undock on Thursday and land Saturday.
Has Christine tapped in to their pinger?
well, they did replace colin with a female host this week.
My realtime issue has cropped up again. The last item it shows is my post about the spacewalk finishing. According to the bit at the bottom it has not polled for 13 minutes whereas before it was every 30ish seconds. Is there a cut out timer after which it stops polling?
nope. i found a bug though.
if you try and quote a previous quote, javascript goes bang and then the poller stops. you may be experiencing that issue, or something along those lines.
I quoted your quote of Scott's comment about needing a license for home brew. That may have been what triggered it.
can ya keep an eye on it pls? if we both have the same issue, it might be simple to solve.
Off-topic: YouTube Live rocks! So far, anyway. :)
Sure. If it helps I am still on my old XP machine and using Firefox which was downloaded in the last week so should be up to date.
Isn't it Kenny Dalgish's daughter this week? And it'll be Martin Kelner. Off of the city of Leeds. Haven't listened to FT yet this week.
ah-ha. i was listening, honest.
test
I tried quoting a quote to see what happened and my realtime made its next 3 polls on schedule. Must be some kind of intermittent fault or there is a deatil to it we don't understand yet.
ok, thanks you. sounds like it'll be a tricky one then :(
Is there any other kind?
ER, About Sidepodcastspace:
Does NASA still use the massive runway at Edwards AFB to land the Space Shuttle nowdays or has the landing rollout gotten shorter since the days of Challenger?
They have sevral possible landing sites. There are a few places that can land the shuttle. The primary is at Kennedy Space Centre Shuttle Landing facility, then Edwards or the White Sands Space Harbour in NM or they have options in Europe which are used if there are engine problems etc on take off when they can abort to Zaragoza in Spain, Moron(I know) in Spain or Istres in France. In principle they could use the European sites for a landing if the 3 US sites were unavailable. It just means a longer trip home on the back of the modified 747.
The extra cost is about 1 million dollars if they have to piggy back the shuttle from one side of US to the other. in the old days, they'd probably always try to save money, but now, they just get the thing down in the easiest way they can.
A1gp race now on. You can get <a href="http://www.a1gp.com/about/promotion.aspx?id=31"free live video of the official site (with english audio), or just audio if you wish. i was not expecting that. and live timing. Safety car deployed on the first lap. So far, it's pretty good, but really weird to hear countries rather than drivers for each car - and the same problem as I have with week one of F1 - which car is which?
correct video link for a1gp if anyone is up and interested.
there is overtaking! each car has a certain number of power boosts during the race and the live timing keeps track of when drivers are using it (it changes colour) and tells you how many power boosts there are left. it's 45 or 60 hp i think.
live telemetry - for any team. just select the "dashboard" setting at the bottom of live timing. and you even get the position on track of every driver! perfect for when a team goes in the pits and you NEED to know where people are.
pit stops - strange - only the lollipop guy gets to go outside the garage to bring the car in. all the others have to stay in the garage until the car is stopped. less injuries perhaps? given pit strategies are slightly different to F1 - everyone comes in really within 1 or 3 laps of each other, I guess the pits lane can get pretty busy.
next race nz - bad time zone i guess again. even the drivers visors (at least one) advertise the date of the race (Jan 20).
a couple of familiar names: Andretti (USA), Karthikeyan (Ind)
in short - I liked it. my first a1gp in two or three years. I'm a fan. now. Maybe it's because I don't get a lot of motor sport here at the moment.?
Final Order and points [topical in F1 at the moment]: Ireland (15), Portugal (12), USA (10), Australia (8), Sth Africa(6), New Zealand(5), Brazil (4), Netherlands (3),China (2),Malaysia (1). Points upto tenth position, and a bonus point for the fastest lap.
Oh god I've never heard a pinger, arrow or HALLELUJIAH used so much.
Twas Kelly Dalglish btw.
Man it's been really snowing over here in Norwich! :D
Woke up and it was like being in the Arctic, cept you could still see the cars, and the houses, well you know what I mean.
Sooo, only three up for the panel today?
you say it like i'll know who she is.
ahh, v.interesting. fom will no doubt be very aware of that.
out of curiosity. ferrari make the engines, correct? so will they have a better understanding of how these things work when they arrive in melbourne?
As someone said last night she is the daughter of Kenny Daglish
correct - ferrari make the engines. and whoever make the radios should be "throttled". at least two drivers said that they didn't work. the Malaysian driver came in for a pit stop and the crew just looked at him - he heard the wrong teams "pit" instruction. so after 10 seconds of "I thought you called me in" vs "Why are you here, what's the problem?" he went back onto the track. great way to ruin a good finish in front of the home crowd.
Andretti (USA) may miss the next A1GP race in New Zealand, but said that Danika (sp?) might be having the drive. That will keep the BBC happy if that "girl" wins again :)
I think the 'boost' in A1GP is just a temporary increase in the rev limit and nothing technologically relevant to KERS etc.
I have just done a couple of news searches on Coulthard and his hypothetical sone and they are returning next to nothing. There are one or two forums and the odd news reference to his soon to be born son. I get the impression that a few people have jumped the gun on this one.
http://www.homeofsport.com/f1/news/item.aspx?id=23627
that's all i can find. no idea how reliable that site is though. they don't quote sidepodcast as a reference, so it could well be true :)
They haven't- http://www.dcmuseum.co.uk/ on the the right it says
'Breaking news!
David and Karen are now the proud parents of a wee baby boy.
His name is still to be decided but Baby DC arrived today (Friday November 21) at 1.30pm.
DCM would like to congratulate David and Karen on their new arrival and hope their bundle of joy is everything they've dreamed of.'
ahh, cheers lou.
no problem, i figure if anywhere is gonna know it's gonna be there.
was it dan who had the news first? autosport need to sign him up asap, they have no mention of it as yet.
Do DCM quote sidepodcast as a reference? I can't believe how little coverage this is getting.
someone outta tell gmm ;)
Maybe Keith should sign him up.
THe DCM is run by the family so you have to assume that is accurate. Well done Lou.
Ah, but now it's reached the most reliable source of information anywhere, it's just a matter of minutes.
who runs DC's own web site then?
No idea. I assume his PR people. MB2?
Danica Patrick! Hmmm... That'll make it a race definitely worth watching. Good on Marco today; he did well to get 3rd, even if much of it was down to Malaysia's Fairuz Fauzy pitting for no apparent reason. Ireland has taken the championship lead, thanks to Adam Carroll's 2 wins.
Congrats to David and Karen! Daddy DC... that should be interesting. :P
there was a reason - he heard on his radio the instructions of "pit", however somehow that was from another team! so he came in. and the crew just looked at him like when somebody gets the invitation for dinner wrong and comes on the wrong day.
and it's a boy. off to the go-kart track next weekend then :)
Home of Sport must have been early - the post time for their "Coulthard's a dad!" story was timed 12:11pm GMT and DCM (who should know if any site does) said the baby was only born at 1:30pm.
there was a reason - he heard on his radio the instructions of “pit”, however somehow that was from another team! so he came in. {Scott in Italy - 3 comments ago}
At least he's in good company - Mika Hakkinen allegedly did the same in Melbourne 1998, which indirectly resulted in the imfamous position switch with DC..
twins?
Maybe the first one was just the jaw but looked big enough to be a whole baby.
wait till they get to donington, it'll be:
"we have clearance, clarence. what's our vector, victor?"
and all the drivers will be heading for runway niner.
:D
What!?
With all the avgas in the atmosphere you could end up with a few illegal compounds in fuel tanks there.
Lesson learned: wait for the pits to call your name along with the word 'pit' or 'box'. :P
Donington's near East Midlands airport. :)
I have little to no idea about that track, but I'm sensing some apprehension? :)
It is right next to East midlands airport. It is so close that half of a runway had to be closed becausr the Moto GP people built a structure that interfered with the airspace required for take off.
You have been there. I saw the vid.
sidepodspace update.
Today is boring. The ten astronauts aboard the ISS have been given four hours off duty time. What are they foing to do with it??? It must be good because they are not showing any video of it.
I think most of the teams will now develop a plan like that - or learn to use pitboards like they used to do! I wonder if they test the radios at all. I think of the 6 or 7 drivers/teams I heard interviewed, two had no little to no radio at all, and one other had one way communication. technology is amazing....
I remember Prost had to sort out all McLaren's radio procedures when he went there. He was called in to the pits and a couple of corners before the pit entry he called to check everything was OK. 'No problem' was the message that was sent. Unfortunately all he heard was problem so he did not pit. By the next race the language to be used was defined.
Frankly I find it odd in this day and age people are still using words like pit or box that everyone knows and could use. Surely they should have some kind of confirmation code that no-one else can know. Box seahorse or something. That way you are always going to be right. It is not difficult and it is sooo obvious.
Go for a walk?
They only have three suits and two of them spent 7 hours going for a walk yesterday and one of them is back out tomorrow.
I suppose they could take the shuttle out and try to find Heidi's tool bag
i spy?
there's bound to be a bag of tools floating around out there somewhere.
something begining with e
Earth?
Your turn
I wonder if they have them books like when you go on a car journey. You have to tick the things when you've seen them.
Moon. Check.
ISS. Check.
In the pic in dropio is Jenson trying to do the Vulcan live long and prsoper thing with his hand?
Of course they all have laptops so they are maybe waiting for the show to start. I hope they comment and don't just lurk.
prosper.
Something beginning with S.
space?
stars
hehe i love that you guys are playing i spy :D
sun.
So what do you think they can see?
They are over central Russia in orbital night time. How can they see the sun? & I am not taking this too seriously
:D
riiight.
sea?
erm.. i'd like to say Saturn but it's probably too far away.. how about a satellite?
How about Sputnik! Yeah, it's not in space anymore... but it starts with S! :D
silliness?
You can see Saturn from the ground with your naked eye. You can just about make out little lumps where the rigs are iff all the angles are right. i used to work with a guy who did an astronomy course with the RAF. I would leave the building at night and find him looking at the sky. When I aked why he started pointing at things and saying that's Saturn and that's Venus etc. There is a nice piece of software you can get called starry night that shows you everything that is visible form any point on the earth and any time. I managed to get a free copy. It really is amazing what you can see if you know where to look.
erm....Sidepodcast!?!?!?
or Sidepodcake etc
omg your eyesight must be excellent.
funny though. I think they should play hide and go seek. That would keep them busy for minutes.
I meant silliness as a guess. I assume that word isn't what the spy could see.
In that case, may I try:
Spaceperson?
Anyone can see it. If the sun is in the right place it is quite bright and apparently big. It looks like a big star and somehow not quite circular.
I forgot it is Christine who set this so the answer must be space door.
Is that two words?
Or how about:
spanner (from the toolkit)?
:D
off to the other post....
Maybe it is hyphenated. i don't know it is Christine's word(s).
The real good eyesight test is to pick out the trinary star system that's located in one of the Ursa Major (The Big Bear or The Big Dipper). Mizar and Alcor you should see, but the real trick is to point out the third star....
