It was the final day of testing today which saw some lopsided Ferrari cars, some Renault braces and Vettel on top once again. That was good stuff. Now we get to sit back and try and analyse everything we saw. It's going to be particularly difficult because everyone was running different strategies and we don't have any idea who was actually fast. Nevertheless, we will do our best.
Formula 1 related discussions:
- Bourdais seems to be pretty annoyed about the way his test went, he's now saying that it's going to come down to the money in the end.
- Sutil says he's not feeling threatened by Pedro de la Rosa, which is hardly a surprise because he finished last for the second day in a row.
- The Red Bulletin looks like it's on the way out. Boo.
- Also, how can we get Bernie on Sidepodquiz?
Non-Formula 1 related discussions:
- There's a new commenting feature available. Use it carefully, it's brand new and still in the alpha stage.
- We'd still quite like your nomination votes. It's still the nominations, people, imagine how much fun we'll have once it gets going.
Naturally, there is no reason to feel limited by what I have listed here. We want to hear what you've got to say about anything F1 and about the world in general. Get talking, and I'll see you in the comments.
there is a flaw in the new commenting feature - there's no way to start a new conversation. so this be what i'm doing.
or to put it another way...
first!
Hmm, I can't click on the word in italics. Another bug or is it just so i can't ask if you are going to moderate yourself for posting "first" in a new thread? :)
Makes more sense now that there are two active threads.
I just realised that anyone reading this later will have no idea what I am on about. Still never mind.
:)
that's a proper bug.
Ah OK :D
I got what ya meant. :P
I just looked at the realtime thing and it was 4 or 5 comments behind. I unchecked the 'Update real time feed' box and re-checked it and that brought up all the missing comments. It should have been updating all along.
I posted my previous comment using the lclt and the realtime page has updated immediately.
what happened there then?
good news is this works on the iPod whereas lclt doesn't.
Yossidlr has a video up now of action from yesterday at Barcelona :D
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=BpNW2QfrJl0
Also, how ironic is it that for that podcast community, the only nearest competition to us, a Formula 1 podcast, is a podcast on the environment :P
hey, we have pandas.
:D
Just the one panda?
we need more?
We have the 50 that the Chinese are lending us for our F1 team's factory and a bamboo forest on top of the French volcano.
beat that eco-mentalists.
Disneyland drops out of the race to host the French GP:
http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns20986.html
Another failed project for Prost, but more importantly, no French GP for a while. If we lose the British GP as well for 2010 (assuming Donington doesn't pull it off), that will leave us with quite an odd calendar.
Some more news, this time from Pitpass:
Both Sutil and now Fisichella have come out and said: My job is safe, I have a contract, Pedalo is no threat to us.
(Paraphrasing obviously. And they probably didn't say Pedalo.)
Do you think this is a case of 'he doth protest too much' or simply them trying to say 'stop scraping the barrel for news just because there isn't any'?
Also, Journeyer, we love sharing news stuff, but try not to quote more than a paragraph or too, or else we'll get in trouble :)
Whoops-ey-doodle. Hey, at least I cited them. But alright. :)
Um, as you said, PDLR is... well, slow. But how about PDR? :)
Hmmm... there is probably something to the Pedro angle, but his test times killed that off.
I guess they don't see either of them as a threat? They must be really confident in their contracts.
As they say, a contract is worth the paper it's written on. In other words, those can change at any time. I'm basing my confidence more on their test performances.
well, what's an f1 contract worth these days?
in truth though, he's old, he's slow and if i'm honest he's a bit of a cheater. can't see they have anything to worry about from that man.
That's awful! It was such a "Mickey-Mouse" track too! :P
that bike rider chap apparently is 3secs off the pace in italy today:
"Rossi, who won his eighth world title and sixth in the top Moto GP class in September, had stated prior to testing the Ferrari that he wanted to get within one second of the lap record."
"He still has a day and a half of testing to reach his objective."
http://tinyurl.com/rossiferraritest
:D
I love Bernie.
:D
Surely you could just use the old live commenting like me now?
He only did 30 laps. Mugello is a tricky circuit and not having sat in a single seater for a year it will take him a while to get down to a representative time.
sidepodspace
The astronauts doing today's spacewalk are being loaded into the airlock now so the spacewalk should start some time within the next hour. Any guesses as to what Heidi will throw overboard today?
i know you want one:

The worrying thing about that is that honda may do an earthdreams version
am thinking we need to get christine to wear one and do a show in the dark :)

My driving style suits ugly cars - Jenson

Five drivers for two STR seats - Le Seb
Just to prove that ugly cars are nothing new I 'borrowed' a few pics of cars that were greeted with horror by previous generations. Have they grown on you or are they still ugly.
sidepodspace
The second spacewalk has just started. It is due to finish shortly after midnight GMT.
At the risk of making Lou angry, does that mean that Jenson's driving style is also "ugly"....
Since Lou is going to read this I will say that it is because his style compensates for the ugliness.
Maybe Honda needs a driver with a "ragged" style of driving the car, like JV, so that at worst, the cameras will have a hard time focusing on the car and resulting blur will be more pleasing to the viewer's eyes than these ugly cars!

oh sweet god thats ugly

very ugly

I have since add the ligier JS5 which for dairly obvious reasons was known as the teapot
- ugly
You are only saying that because you know Max's company built it.
Oh.sweet.god.
The Arrows A2 and Tyrrell 6-wheeler aren't too bad, the rest are ugly!
Good news everybody (I'm starting to talk like Prof. Farnsworth of Futurama)
http://www.itpro.co.uk/608484/bbc-to-live-stream-main-tv-channels
BBC are to show live streaming of their shows soon. Be able to watch F1 races now in deepest, darkest Britain. (Theres a joke here but I'm not gonna say it.)
I always liked the the Tyrrell P34 but the rest vary from ugly to just plain weird for the Ligier.
we can officially dispose of the tv then :)
Has anyone here posted their top 10 drivers yet? Here's mine:
1. Kubica
= Alonso
3. Hamilton
= Massa
5. Vettel
6. Trulli
7. Bourdais
8. Glock
9. Webber
10. Raikkonen
I put Kubica and Alonso joint 1st as they were the most consistent and won in bad machinery.
Hamilton and Massa - too close to call as both drove brilliantly one week and rubbish the next.
Vettel is next, and a bit lower down because he started the year poorly and he's a rookie
Trulli is next because he did well in an average car and kept the motivation up.
Bourdais next because he would have had a much better year if it wasn't for the bad luck and bad penalties given to him.
Glock next, a young hotshoe, fast and talented but had two of the year's biggest accidents.
Webber is next, flashes of brilliance but couldn't get the most out of a potentially race-winning car. Silverstone really was a bad race for him in my book.
Finally Kimi Raikkonen, who I mention purely because he had the talent to win the championship, and until he crashed drove brilliantly at Spa, but let himself down week after week. He is only here because we know he can do better.
Well, there's my Top 10 for 2008. Ladies and Gentlemen, start your arguments!
of the year? don't think so.
ten seems a lot though. let's give it a try...
- vettel
- kubica
- alonso
- heidfeld
- massa
- lewis
- rosberg
- kimi
- bourdais
- webber
If I was the other spacewalker today, I'd be staying well away from her. No wonder that NASA reports they are ahead of schedule - the other guy is to get back inside ASAP!FYI The spacewalk is still going but i haven't seen any outside pictures in the last five minutes (I just turned it on).
and now back to watching Gladiator on tv...
Today's italian lesson: Roma ha vinto! (Rome has won!)
re: top ten drivers
way to hard for me tonight. to decide which drivers drove well, based on how good there car was and only shown up by how good the other driver was. hypothetically if there was a team with two good drivers, but a bad car, we'd just assume there was a really good car and think the drivers had it easy. Too hard to separate drivers and their cars for me.
video of Rossi test - not sure if this works outside Italy but thought we could try.
24 Photos of rossi test
works for me, thanks.
without bothering to do any research whatsoever, i'm assuming 46 is his usual number?
love the effort they put in to the garage door.
re top ten drivers:
1. Massa
2. Hamilton
3. Alonso
4. Kubica
5. Vettel
6. Glock
7. Rosberg
8. Barrichello
9. Heidfeld
10. Kimi
Honorary mention to DC.. I'm gonna miss him!
Yeah that's his number. It looks like they wrote the number on with shaving cream.
I have a new definition for your dictionary :)
yuk-er-roo, adjective to describe how bad the new front wing on the 2009 spec cars is
Just testing the 'realtime' page using Epiphany.
All seems to work OK.
Edit: And the edit function works too. How cool.
I quite like the FW08 6 wheeler.
ooh fancy :)
yay!
i''l second that.
I like to call it, sleak.
That, and next time I'm on SPP with a related car question, best bet is not to be on my team.
planning ahead, i like it.
Hmmph ... not even been on an SPP show yet and there is rivalry! lol
haha. you're always welcome though.
sounds like you'll have to be on r.g's team to help make up for his points shortfall.
We seem to have a lack of volunteers for Sunday's sidepod panel. People can't be fed up with it already. Volunteers can sign up at the link below.
http://sidepodcast.wetpaint.com/page/Next+Week%27s+Panellists
do you think that's because we're planning on doing it earlier?
I don't know why it is. Since the show started there has never been a shortage of volunteers. I would assume that most of the regular panelists haven't visited the wiki for a few days. Either that or they want to make sure there is a slot for Kathi.
Hehe, right now you might think I am stupid, but if I go as a panelist on SPP you will KNOW I'm stupid :)
pah, you know that's not true.
Bernie Ecclestone divorce confirmed
http://www.crash.net/motorsport/f1/news/171954-0/bernie_ecclestone_divorce_confirmed.html
Most people think they will come across badly but everyone who does the show is there to enjoy it and no-one is there to put anyone else down. Look how nervous Lou was and how she thought she would struggle but she was really good. You should try it. It really is great fun. Besides if you are struggling for something to say there are people like Scott and me who can talk all day and fill the space.
Just catching up with the comments i've missed today
Tis good to know that things might be looking up for Honda... although what is said at the beginning of the season and what is said at the end is often very very different..
Am too tired to be angry ;)
Good answer :)

yay, if they show F1 that will be great (although i will probably still stick to watching the race on tv). The reason i say 'if' is because ITV have been offering a similar service this year, but only for some programs. It will probably be different cause it's the bbc and they are so much better than ITV. :)
1. Alonso
2. Massa
3. Vettel
4. Lewis
5. Kubica
6. Heidfeld
7. Kimi
8. Rubens
9. Webber
10.Rosberg
oh no i missed it :(
haha :D
even when the clocks ticking.
shurely shome mishtake?
if you're short of people i'll have another go (providing i make sure Skype is working ok)
Tis true, i was very very nervous, but once the first question was out of the way, i started to settle down a bit. It's really fun :) you should give it ago.
in that case, we are short of people :)
I'm lost... what have i done? *is very very tired after having had a very long day*
Erm... make this one provisional until I get the DVD.
1. Alonso
= Vettel
3. Kubica
4. Massa
5. Hamilton
6. Glock
7. Raikkonen
8. Barrichello
9. Bourdais
10. Trulli
lol, will put my name on the wiki then
i was expecting to see certain someone listed somewhere. even if it was a token 10th.
I notice the only people who were given the clock on Sunday were doctorvee and me. Anyone would think Christine was racist.
That may encourage Kathi to have a go if she is not the only girl on the show.
I expected him to be in the top three with his team mate in 7th or 8th
Hahaha! To be fair, for all her support for the man who's not there, she's a pretty objective evaluator.
oh lol... he's still me fav driver... he just hasn't done that great this year.. i was judging it on performance... lol if you asked me to judge them in terms of who i liked it would be a totally different story ;)
lol if i was feeling more awake i might have slipped him in somewhere, but i thought i would be fair and not so biased today ;)
Maybe he'd be on everyone's list if it was a top 11? ;)
lol most probably :)
Anyway, i'm off to get some sleep. night all x
I am glad that I am not the only one schoked to see a certain someone of Lou's top ten list. Considering that I factored in a baseline performance of how well the car should do before I start rating drivers, Lou would be happy to know that her certain someone made my top 10. My list is on tomorrow's diary entry.
*is not here as she should be asleep*
i feel bad he isn't in my list now... tbh I didn't really think a lot about him when deciding, shows you how tired i am. i may have to correct the list in the morning in today's thread...

If I could get my copy of Skype to acknowledge the internet, I'd sign up. Until then, I can't :(
i think we've said this before, but we are happy to phone you on a normal phone, be that mobly or landline.
