Welcome to Sunday. We are halfway through the weekend, and so far I've had a good one, have you? The World Cup is still going strong, but we are not all about football here at Sidepodcast. In fact, we shouldn't really be about football at all, so here are some of the other things that we're talking about:

  • Let's start with the most important thing - Mr C has been talking to Joe once again and they've come up with a fabulous podcast covering many, many topics. My favourite bit is about the driver at Renault. Good times!
  • Chandhok has gone and got himself a regular column on Reuters. As if we didn't love the chap enough as it is, he's written a round up of all the action from Canada from his point of view, plus given us the chance to comment on it. Lovely stuff. At the time of writing, there was only one comment though. I'm sure we can do better than that.
  • It is Superleague Formula day today, and I've noted that Franck Montagny qualified 12th. At least I think he did. It's hard to find the information on the official site and nowhere else seems to have it. So, our man is 12th, which is behind Bourdais. Boo! It will all be live streamed on the site, so if you're around and fancy watching a crazy motorsport race that doesn't make much sense, I highly recommend it.
  • In non-sporting news, yesterday's Doctor Who was quite an epic first part of a double episode series finale. I'll do no spoilers here, of course, but I have written my thoughts on the episode here, whilst Lukeh has got an excellent summary on his Doctor-dedicated blog here. Make sure you read them both and let us know what you thought of the episode (if you're a fan, that is!)

That should do it for now. Let us know how you're spending this fine Sunday, either outside if the weather is good, or tucked up indoors if it is not. Or maybe tucked up indoors even if the weather is good. There's no shame in that. Let us know, and I will see you in the comments.

Says it's an air show so I'm guessing it is a static display rather than testing. The photo before it is Rosberg Sr's car.

I despise the windows itunes updates. It's basically a popup box that works like this

Oh hello, I see you want to update itunes, that's great and all but here, have Safari, something else, and this and that and.. oh, you just want iTunes? Fine, I'll go MEGA SLOWLY THEN.

    mine goes something like,

"Ah so you want to update iTunes?"

Me: "Yes please, you keep annoying me with your pop up boxes"

"Ah yes we do that, but it's quick and easy so you may aswell"

    Me: "Ah well ok then"

"Installs quite slowly.....TA DA!!! oh wait i've deleted your entire collection of music"

    Me: "You've done what?!?"

"Ah yes, sorry about that. I'm not going to tell you that it's already saved as a library and wait for you to discover that yourself *sniggers*"

I have the longest 10 days I've ever worked coming up. I'm going to need a holiday by the time I get to go away!!

you should just keep bugging someone at work to give you holiday hours until they just give in and decide you need one to get you off their back :)

What time do I need to write the WC Post by, Mr. C?

"Installs quite slowly.....TA DA!!! oh wait i've deleted your entire collection of music"

It quite often deletes all my podcast settings when it updates which is much more annoying than it sounds.

Go on the internet, do some basic word processing, bit of spreadsheeting, watch iplayer and listen to my podcasts. I really don't need fancy functions but every computer I've ever owned ends up slowing down to the point you want to smash it against a wall.

  • Alison19/06/2010 at 23:45

I have a bad relationship with iTunes, I don't want that a program decides what to do with my music library. I just want a program to reproduce music, and organize it (but I want to organize it). Besides, it doesn't recognize half of the formats I have my music in...

  • me19/06/2010 at 23:47

ah-ha. in that case, i've corrected your original comment:

    ;)

  • Alison19/06/2010 at 23:48

ah-ha. in that case, i've corrected you original comment:

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for irrelevant functionality to be stripped out in return for a reasonable price. I don't want most of the stuff so I don't want to pay for it.

  • Jeremy19/06/2010 at 23:48

Just so you know, iTunes doesn't have to organize your folders of music for you. I forget where the option is to turn that off though :)

  • RubberGoat19/06/2010 at 23:49

"All I want is a computer that works, for a price I am willing to pay. I don't do anything fancy with it but for some reason no-one is able to provide me with one."

If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

I used to loathe that part of working in an appliance store - people expect the cheap stuff to be as good a quality as the expensive stuff and then shout at you when it isn't...

  • guille230619/06/2010 at 23:49

then I seriously think you should give linux a try (recommendation: Ubuntu). You don't seem to do anything particularly problematic for linux, so you'll be ok with it. It's cheap (free, and runs on any computer), and normally doesn't have the growing syndrome of windows

  • Bassano19/06/2010 at 23:49

"All I want is a computer that works, for a price I am willing to pay. I don't do anything fancy with it but for some reason no-one is able to provide me with one."

    True

The iPad does all of those things but it's really not a primary device.

Still, if you have an old 'puter you can use to back it up and for the occasional update...

  • me19/06/2010 at 23:49

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for irrelevant functionality to be stripped out in return for a reasonable price. I don't want most of the stuff so I don't want to pay for it.

so now you want a custom machine that fits your needs exactly? shouldn't that cost more, rather than less?

in windows world, the c**p you don't want actually subsidises the low price you are happy to pay. that's how it works isn't it?

For the things you described, yes. Things get a little bit messy when you try to do some other things, but basic home-office computing is pretty solid. But try it: download a 'Live CD' from Ubuntu's page, boot the computer with it and check it working in real life. If you don't want what you see or how it works, you just don't install it.

you should re-install windows every one year, that's my experience. It just grows, and grows, and...

not related to drivers, but to bad registry/programs/file management. at least that's for XP, I haven't used a windows machine as my primary computer since Vista came out.

    *lobs grenade, runs*

I saw that today. Quite funny :)

It's pretty much how we all reacted when we saw the iPad - duckface and starry eyes...

Did you guys see this Dilbert? http://dilbert.com/strips/comic/2010-06-18/

Please do this Alison. It would be awesome to learn from your experience

There is some truth in it but what no one hears is how good the resale value will be in 2 years.

My iMac could probaly sell for over 50% of it's original price

Does running bootcamp on your mac hamper its performance in the same way as the windows machine in the first place?

  • guille230620/06/2010 at 00:10

Well it worked before... some Linux versions just don't like wifi cards though ;)

it works. I have my eepc 1005 with Ubuntu on it. I just had to touch some things to make the mic work properly, but that's it

  • Jeremy20/06/2010 at 00:10

the advantage is, bootcamp requires a "clean" install of windows. so you don't get the cack pc world pre-load for you.

  • Jeremy20/06/2010 at 00:11

Does running bootcamp on your mac hamper its performance in the same way as the windows machine in the first place?

Windows is the problem, brand of hardware is much much less relevant to your problems

  • guille230620/06/2010 at 00:11

    Really really not tempted :D

you lose nothing by trying, just the time to download it ;-)

I see. I'm starting to do OU study and their resources won't work without bootcamp. I guess my hunk of junk will just have to live another day....

Well you could always switch to a Mac, format the PC and only use it for course work - you might find that with less usage it may run better...

  • Jeremy20/06/2010 at 00:14

    Yeah I checked. I knew I wasn't imagining it

"You will need internet access and a computer. If you have purchased a new Windows computer since 2002 it should meet your course computing requirements. Check our Technical Requirements section if your computer is older than this or is otherwise unusual. in that case the apple route is going to be very expensive. can i recommend a pillow for your desk instead?

I really don't know. Possibly it's to do with their electronic submission software. I know when I was at uni, people had a lot of problems using that and had to go use university pcs to submit a lot of work.

If it's just occasional, just to upload something, then probably a dual-boot is good solution. you don't need to live on windows the whole day, just boot from time to time and get back to apple or linux.

I would recommend you a virtual machine (that's what I do with the two programs I need that only run on windows), but I don't know if you would want to go trough it

It wouldn't be too strange if they have an electronic submission program that run only on windows. Not the smartest thing to do, but I have seen it, sadly.

  • Alison20/06/2010 at 00:38

They obviously have an attitude problem.... The first sentence of the relevant section starts "Of the few students who use a Mac"

From what I can see, there's nothing a mac would struggle with unless they send you software.

Beats me. Of course it may be in their interest to have a ball everyone complains about. If the ball was good no-one would mention it and if the view expressed is that this one is nowhere near as good as their normal balls people will buy their normal balls rather than anyone else's because they are so much better according to the experts. Of course I may just be cynical but this has been happening for many years

Sports mics are awesome. You need to try to see the film the NFL release of the superbowl each season. Utterly mndblowing. You can hear completely clearly all the discussion on the pitch and the quarterbacks calling the plays. Not just on the recent ones but on some going back 30 years or more

I'm going to get my dinner while watching Truth in 24. Have a nice night!

Enjoy it. I saw it a couple of nightsago. It's really good.

  • guille230620/06/2010 at 01:56

    i really must watch that.

yesterday I saw the first 10 min and decided that it needed my full attention, so tonight is the movie of the night :P

  • Steven Roy20/06/2010 at 01:59

    i really must watch that.

I really enjoyed it. Being a McNish fan helped of course since he hogs it a bit. It was really interesting when you got the occasional snippet of how the team worked, It's interesting the similarity between the drivers and the early astronauts. The fact that one guy may be in the car alone but one of his co-drivers is pushing the engineers to give him the right info etc. There are little bits that come straight out of The Right Stuff

  • me20/06/2010 at 02:00

There are little bits that come straight out of The Right Stuff

    ?

  • Steven Roy20/06/2010 at 02:04

The Right Stuff is about the original 7 Mercury astronauts. They spend a lot of time fighting with the engineers and flight controllers to make sure the astronaut on board gets the best treatment, information etc because they know that one day they will be the spam in the can and the other astronauts will be the only people fighting their corner.

It was quite interesting how similar it was with TK in the car and McNish bugging the engineer to make the best decisions

  • me20/06/2010 at 02:06

You can write anything that grabs you. As long as it has the key information of what games are on today and at what time, the rest is up to you :)

Motogp at the new silverstone. It seems to big for the bikes, they are getting lost ina all that space

It's no different to most of the tracks they go to...

    The Moto2 race was good...

The fact that Dani lost it yesterday and the practice this morning means that he's rather tentative...

That new section is excellent for them but it's making me think that

  • Lady Snowcat20/06/2010 at 12:36

Jorge is running away with the MotoGP.... and therefore the championship...

It says you can submit work as long as you have "open office" is that a commonly owned programme?

    http://sidepodcast.com/2010/06/20/daily-20th-june-2010/comments/#comment-816533 {Comment #144}

Yes. It's open source and free, I prefer it over Microsoft Office and it works on many different systems. You could write your coursework in Linux and then set up your dual-boot system such that you only needed the Windows bit to submit the finished article. I don't have Boot Camp but I used to dual-boot my PC and my Windows XP could read, copy from and paste to the drive with Windows 98 on it just fine.

Just read that. Looks like France have taken up the Dutch tradition of pressing the self destruct button in the middle of a tournament.

I didn't know the Dutch were in the habit of doing that, but there must be some serious mismanagement going on in the French camp if even I, a total football ignoramus, has noticed.

I think 1978 sums it up best. They made the 74 final and were definitely the best team in the world at that time. A number of their top players including Cruyff who was the best in the world decided they were not going to play. The team lost the 1978 final even with a depleted squad. Had the top players been there then winning it was a strong possibility.

Goodwood FOS is officially the best event ever... you can hire a Panasonic Lumix G2 camera for FREE!

The Panasonic event will allow visitors at the Festival to hire a Lumix G2 digital camera free of charge for a couple of hours to try to capture the best images of the day. There’ll be plenty to choose from so feel free to take as many photographs as you like. Whether your subject is the latest supercars of one of the many celebs or racing drivers who attends the festival, you’ll have plenty of space on your 2GB SD memory card

When you've finished with the camera, return it to one of the Lumix experts who will then take copies of your images. You get to keep the memory card and your photographs will be entered into a prize draw.

  • Steven Roy20/06/2010 at 19:34

THe report was quick but I don't buy it for a second. A safeety crew with an average of 20 years experience a head don't know how to pack a hose. A mistake under pressure I can understand but a mistake doing something routine when they have time to make it right is dodgy. You also have to ask why it wasn't obvious extinguishers were better than a hose 30 years ago.

interesting argument. but the purpose of the threads is to keep the daily free from football, for those who have no interest in the game. i guess.

We were talking about a bus ambushed by gunmen that somehow I'd failed to hear about before... I must have been in Dubai.

Well that was quite enjoyable, albeit with faults... NASCAR at Sears Point. Leader threw it away, silly.

    Well yeah..

He turned off his engine to save fuel under a yellow, which apparently they do often, coast along for a bit. But he did it going uphill and it wouldn't restart when he wanted it to. He lost 6 or 7 places, but then drove past them all to take his place at the front behind the safety car. Can't do that. Stupid error.

they switch off engines to save fuel? what?

  • Pat W20/06/2010 at 23:37

they switch off engines to save fuel? what?

I don't get it either. I always thought you use more restarting it than if you'd left it running
