Over the hump of the week and it's all downhill into the weekend from here. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm pretty much ready for another car to launch now. Oh, lucky us, there is one about to drop today.
- Toyota's TF109 is due to be launched online. Don't miss it, because it's bound to be... exciting? That's not the right word, is it?
- Elsewhere, Grandprix.com had some exlusives from Stefano Domenicali. He seemed to cover all topics, from KERS being a waste of resources, through simulators, to some positive talk about Kimi. All pretty interesting stuff, but what kind of a name is Wrooom! for an event anyway?
- Also, Alianora has written a long but excellent reviewof the Sporting Regulations for this season. It's worth every second of your time reading it. In fact, I might read it twice.
That's all for now. There's bound to be news floating around today, what with some new rear wings to call ugly. Of course, you are welcome to discuss anything else that comes to mind - that's what the daily post is for. I will see you in the comments.
I can't believe I'm the first one in here. And thanks for the compliment on the Sporting Regulations review.
i can't believe you are and didn't say "first". but thank you ;)
Come on! Go Lewis is ok isn't it? :-p
Steve Jobs is on holidays for a while due to illness. It's not F1 news, but I thought you'd like to know.
Thanks for that, Jeremy. I guess with it out in the open, Apple can announce such things. But all this makes me wonder: what is Apple's succession plan? Surely, given Steve's condition, they've put one together already?
No doubt years ago when he suffered a significant health scare. Possibly even before that as normal company policy. Your guess is as good as mine.
The public perception is of a company with a clear leader. The reality is, there is a very strong management team in place with many charismatic individuals ready to lead.
I'll do it if they ask nicely :-)
I heard the succession plan was to sell the whole thing to Microsoft
True, but whoever that successor is, he'll need to start getting more public exposure quickly. One of the key factors of Apple's success is how well it connects with the people, and Jobs built on his charisma to become popular, and therefore, make his brand more popular too.
Didn't they kinda do that in the 1990s already? Remember that eerie shot of Gates showing up on the livescreen at Macworld? While they did only sell half the stock, it kinda fizzled out.
Just seen on the news that Apple stock is falling fast already.
How do you embed images? img tags?
Either way, this is not the new ToyotaF1 car, infact it is their first. But I'm sure a few of the same styling cues will carry over to the one they dump on the world in a few hours.

No one likes hearing that things were worse than first thought.
you can't at the moment dave, but we're working on it.
ahh, if only they could keep the rear wing...
i'd be more concerned if jonny ive fell ill to be honest.
gmm have been listening to scott:

Morning everyone :) I'm guessing the Toyota will be launched at 11am? Just when I leave for my theory, bah! :P
Although you can probably understand I'm more worried about the theory than Toyota's launch ;)
take your mind off of things with this excellent video from axis:
http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2009/01/little-nrbugring.html
If you have Firefox the Text-to-Image add-on is mega useful. If people post a link to an image then it displays the image as if it was embedded.
good tip!
My bad... it was text-to-image, not linki, but linkification is still very useful for posted links :)
good luck Luke ;) i'm sure you'll be fine :)
Morning guys, less than an hour to go!
just sorting a new thread. are you following the whole thing online too?
Sure thing. Wouldn't miss a new car launch for the world :P
thanks :) lets go and get this theory over and done with. enjoy the launch guys!
Toro Rosso speculation ahoy!
The STR website no longer has a French version available, but does now have a Japanese one instead. Hmm...
Gosh!
That speculation might actually hold more water than anything most other websites would put up. Good observation, Dank!
http://www.websiteoutlook.com/www.sidepodcast.com
According to that, Sidepodcast is worth just over $6000. :P
i can’t believe you are and didn’t say “first”. but thank you {me - 27 comments ago}
Well, I suppose I did say "first", but I put it in a sentence compliant with English grammatical rules...
Mines worth nearly $1,500, with a daily pageview of 681 and advertising revenue of $2.51 per day.
Right... :-D
The STR website no longer has a French version available, but does now have a Japanese one instead. Hmm… {Dank - 4 comments ago}
Now that's suspicious. But I didn't even know STR had a French version of the site.
According to that, Sidepodcast is worth just over $6000 {Scott Woodwiss - 4 comments ago}
According to that, my blog doesn't exist and neither does the forum to which it is attached.
Today just keeps getting better and better for me!
Toyota release a 2009 which I actually think looks good
I passed the second stage of my telephone interview for Norwich Union and have a face-to-face interview next Thursday
I finished 4th at Portland in the rain in RLB IndyCar starting from 10th
AND our team AGR got a second Honda engine upgrade in a row!!!
I love today. Today is a good day! :D
Nice non-F1 video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpEnFwiqdx8
Would be cool if someone put together something like that that's F1-related.
Thatw as a great video, very interesting and surprising. An F1 would be amazing!
Get it right...
Aviva. :P
Other half used to work for them when we were Nofolk people. She then moved jobs to London.
Hmm. Buy out sidepodcast? Only 6k. I'll find that money somehow ;)
Isn't it that pointless 'Aviva' or something? Which I always thought was a drinks company.
What would you do with it?
Ah, see you're wrong. It's not officially Aviva until June ;)
BAT qualifying is done, but I want one question answered - I forgot to change tyres for qualifying after Istanbul, but how the hell did I still make the top 10?!?!?! :O
Ah, pass, do a MK Dons, make a franchise of it, bring in a famous ex-f1 driver, say Eddie Irvine, realise he is to good and he goes to Chequered Flag only to be sacked by Germany. Of course the podcast gods will be unhappy with the franchise, demote us to the last place, but we work our way to the top by building a new studio in York. Anger the good seasoned sidepodfolk, but bring in new fans. And of course, change the name to SP Slicks.
Woohoo, I did crap.
It's been Aviva for years... just not the public part of the company. The head office has been Aviva for at least 5 years I think.
Yeah I know, I'm just saying the Norwich Union part of Aviva doesn't change it's name officially until June.
BAT racer hates me. Comfortably fastest Q1 and Q2 then 9th in Q3 when it matters.
Like if this year's Dakar hasn't had yet enough drama and sudden changes, Sainz is out...
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/72807
love the explanation:
"Suddenly, a four-metre deep hole appeared in front of us"
what a mental race.
I hope the BAT racer people don't see that
Yeah, I love it :-) You don't get that kind of man/machine-vs-adversity too often...
The spirit is resumed in this phrase: "The Race Touareg was by and large okay, the engine was running", meaning, if it weren't by the doctor order we should have arrived to the end, doctors are so perfectionists...
didn't a 2CV do it!?!
:D
:D
it was on its roof? :D
That's a detail, they turned it up and it was again in its four wheels... Actually, he already ended upside-down in a sandy stage, before crossing to Chile. Some spectators helped them to put the car straight again an they only lost a couple of minutes...
It's the Dakar. Being on the roof is a minor irrelevance.
Just been given a copy of Racing Team Manager by a friend who hated it.
I can see why - it sucks...
what is it?
Anyone seen the ad for Microsoft's attempt at usurping Apple's Garageband? They are calling it Songsmith and this must rank as the worst commercial ever...
Cringeworthy Songsmith ad
If that actually makes anyone want to go out and buy it then they seriously need to see a doctor! ;)
OMG, had to turn that off, real quick. Too bad for words
F1 management sim. Sadly, half of the text in the game is still in german. Grrreat...
8O
They should make a modern Grand Prix Manager 2, or get Sports Interactive (creators of the brilliant Football manager series) to try and get some of the FIA license for an F1 management game
EA made F1 Manager with the FIA license whilst Sony had ti for the formula one Playstation series so why not? It'd be amazing. <3 management sims (so bad, I know...)
Oh.My.God.
That is hilarious. Apple must be really scared. NOT!
out of interest (and keep in mind i know nothing of this), what would separate a ps3 sim from something like batracer?
could've been worse, they could've dubbed it 'squirting'.
:|
A lot of things. On a managment sim you control everything, engines, technical staff, drivers etc. BATracer just focuses on set ups really.
GPM2 can be downloaded here if anyone wants to try it, 2008 mod out I believe
http://www.gpm2world.com/
Official winners of the Weblog Awards if anyone
http://2008.weblogawards.org/news/the-2008-weblog-award-winners/
ace. cheers r.g. will do a post in bit.
i see. sounds involved!
There's a Mr C appreciation Society? Cool :) Is it on the wiki?
Talking of the wiki, I found Alianora's thread about renaming corners .. I think it'd be fun to name all the new Abu Dhabi corners after cocktails (and be totally non-PC)
No, I wrote a long, long, long, long post praising the guy.
Although there should be... ;)
Sounds good, could be a drinking game in that one!
'The Max Turn'
'The Cog Curves'
'Lewis is Rubbish corner'
That sorta stuff? ;)
hehe (oops is laughing at Lewis allowed?) :D
Yes.
what the.....?
I see no alternative.
hehehehehe PMSL :)
KISS - they're a band.
God that guy makes an absolute idiot of himself dunnhi
never seen that pic though.
I have and then I think that the guy on the right looks like a spaniel - every time! :)
You sound surprised? :P
it was a bit of a shock, i'll be honest with ya.
I saw the word 'kiss' in the tab bar when loading and was scared it would feature, that girl
you mean THAT woman?
Yes, THAT woman
I think he does (caps obligatory on that one)
Yes, THAT woman. There's a lot of lovey-dovey pictures of them on the Net, just a matter of searching for them.
I think we'll be fine. Thanks Journeyer :D
goodness, i come back after a hectic few days, and you guys are chatting about THAT woman :P
don't go troubling yourself now.
Try this one http://inlinethumb35.webshots.com/33954/2436613690102996238S425x425Q85.jpg
Dom started it.
I'm sure you talked about it in the Australia podcast?
lol :)
did your exams go ok R.G? (i take it they are finished now?)
oh.
It no workey
I must dig out a map of that track and see if any of the corners suggest a coctail name. Mind you it is a Tilkedrone so Zombie springs instantly mind. Shame that there is not a cocktail called stultifingly boring.
Methinks it wasn't discussed on Sidepodcast. It was discussed on F1 Rejects, though. They made fun of Kimi too, who also had a photo-op with the band.
i'm treating that as a blessing.
:D
I blame Steven.
Who doesn't? :D
I've still got some to go :( Mock Maths (cos I'm so clever I'm doing Fast Track), another Science and an ICT one which will be a walk in the park.
Other than that, first science was simple, french was nervous as hell, and my first maths mock was alright
Sorry I don't know how to do the link thing .. try this
http://inlinethumb35.webshots.com/33954/2436613690102996238S425×425Q85.jpg
Apparantly me when I said Dom
what you're doing seems fine? could try dropio though.
jpg doesn't exist or isn't available on this servers
&
error is 404
I wasn't hear when you started it
I did kinda come out of nowhere...
Evenin' :)
:( I'll try drop.io
Must hit the hay, early start tomorrow.
'night gang
Wow. Me uses Capital letters. You must really not like her :)
Someone managed to land an Airbus A320 on the Hudson river after a bird strike. On BBC2 news now
Failing that, Frop.io :D
The first one worked for me, Jackie.
I doubt that's called a landing
Really am off now
see ya sir.
Alright, Question Time has blared onto my television, so I think time to hit the hay. Metaphorically of course, cos hitting hay may actually hurt me, though never actually tried since I'm not close to a farm. But who knows, maybe a horse will chase after me and it'll all end in a pay day for drop.io/frop.io/laugh.io
God I do tend to waffle when I go to slepp, my god that Toyota is gorgeous, very sle...
even better.
Everyone got off in one piece. The local ferries of their own volition sailed over and started picking people off the wings which is where they went once they had evacuated
How did I end up third in qualifying (and my team-mate fourth)? I know Monaco is a relatively good track for me (I once won it in a Red Bull when I was account-sitting a couple of years back), but I feel this is not an adequete explanation. If that had happened in real F1, the medical centre would be full of fainting journalists because Force Indias simply don't lock out the second row of grids...
Blimey...
Just been given a copy of Racing Team Manager by a friend who hated it.
I can see why - it sucks… {Flibster}
It wasn't released by Europress by any chance? Only I think I may have either its prequel or its sequel (probably sequel since nearly all of it made it into English and only some of the file names are German). It is confusingly known as F1 Manager, not to be confused with the much more realistic EA version that was released some years later.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=96M-L02JDEU
Airbus on the Hudson
I found Alianora’s thread about renaming corners .. I think it’d be fun to name all the new Abu Dhabi corners after cocktails {Jackie}
OK... ...does anyone have a definitive Abu Dhabi map I can play with? Though I may need some help with cocktail names since I've never drunk any - maybe there's a LetsDrinkIt.com site out there?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/lewis-jpg
http://www.formula1.com/races/in_detail/abu_dhabi_823/circuit_diagram.html
Abu Dhabi is not pretty
Other than that, first science was simple, french was nervous as hell, and my first maths mock was alright {R.G.}
Good luck with the remaining exams, R.G.!
my goodness. yuck.
Abu Dhabi diagram on wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Circuit_Yas-Island.svg
nice hat!
oh good god.
that track is gonna end the season?
the racing's gonna be terrible.
It looks like a gun pointing upwards
It looks like Phoenix or one of those US tracks from the 80s
maybe tilke has run out of ideas, and is looking to objects for inspiration?
So we need 20 cocktail names. Given Bernie's new found liking for odd start times I think Tequila Sunrise should be in there
I suppose given news storied in that area Sex on the Beach may or may not be appropriate
http://www.howtomixcocktails.com/cocktail/ take your pick
:D
And the first thing he saw was a gun?
suppose "ferrari" would be considered to be showing bias?
There's one called a Ferrari
Ferrari
1.0 fl. oz. of Amaretto
1.5 fl. oz. of Dry Vermouth
Ice
F1 related (loose;y) cocktails from another site
Cosmopolitan
Around the World
Screw driver
Singapore Sling
Sewer Rat - can't think who that would apply to
erm... he was watching a murder mystery on tv at the time?
:)
There's one called a "snow bunny" .. can you just imagine the commentary :)
Millionaire
Need for Speed - great cocktail name
http://www.cocktail.uk.com/db/viewCocktail.asp?ID=4343&t=Need+for+speed+ii&ty=cocktail+recipe
Shame that there is not a cocktail called stultifingly boring. {Steven Roy}
There's one called Hayride - will that do?
Either that or he was playing cluedo. :P
can we have a Truli choo choo?
I am not sure there is much hay in Abu Dhabi
If such a thing exists
They should just skip Abou Diaby GP and I've already suggested to Lou my plans to try and get plans authorised for the 'Luke's Street GP' to replace it. It;s an exciting street circuit, with no corners and my 3 bedroom bog standard terraced house as the fantastic pit complex for them to spend their time in and relax.
Donington? pffft.
hehe
I am not sure there is much hay in Abu Dhabi {Steven Roy - 4 comments ago}
True, but a hayride would be about as exciting if the Tilkedrome prediction comes true.
You guys maybe already know the testing dates but if not, here's a link http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/tests.php
OK let's have it then
Not F1 related but I have just found two sci-fi cocktails
Jedi mind trick and several versions of the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster
drinking enough of the first could make us think we're watching an awesome race?
I've done the corner re-naming and am dropioing the result.
Maybe that should be the plan for all Tilke races except Turkey. Pick a cocktail and keep drinking until you think you are enjoying it
Wow, that was quick :)
I look forward to Christine's preview show using those names
:D
Well, 'tis bedtime for me.
G'night all :)
see ya tomorrow jackie :)
Damn those asylum seekers
"The level of anger and frustration at the factory is unbelievable. We wonder whether Nick is doing the right thing by wearing two hats. The DTI will be keen to make sure that Honda find the best, most competitive buyer."
in fairness, we've been saying the same thing here and it's not our jobs on the line.
Anything the pilot can walk away from (or in this case, swim) is a landing :)
I wasn't sticking up for Nick Fry, just having a laugh about the Daily Mail. ;)
Maybe my joke wasn't so good. :(
ahh. that was waaay to subtle for me, sorry.
no, it's brilliantly sublime, i'm just not that smart!
;)
