It's Sunday at last and we are about to embark on our first Grand Prix of 2010. It's pretty exciting, and not just because the Factbyte Factbox will be making it's race debut. It was an exciting if hectic experience covering qualifying, so let's see what we can achieve over a full race distance! Anyway, here are some other things we're talking about:
- With extra teams on the grid, it looks as though the FIA have had to change parc ferme quite considerably. Adam Cooper has a good insight into the F1 spy cameras that are now overlooking the cars. We thought maybe it was a little bit Big Brother.
- Will Buxton has some thoughts on the new section of the track, particularly pointing out that: "Quite apart from the fact that there simply isn’t enough track length between corners to allow anyone to have a decent stab at a passing move, the track width is so slim that you can barely fit two cars side by side." Bahrain Fail?
- As a sort of final word on the McLaren vent, Scarbs F1 has a great explanation of how it works. I was still a bit confused but as it happens, it doesn't seem to be as important now that the McLarens didn't qualify that far up the grid anyway.
That's all for now. I hope everyone enjoys the race, and as always, I'll see you in the comments.
I waited. And waited. Waited some more...
Go Lewis!
Evening :)
Hello. It's a new day
hello
I thought you were telling me I'd had a thread fail there but no :D
It's a super duper new day indeed!!
To reply to the Daily post...
I missed the FBFB conversation in the evening - are you sure you guys won't miss the race because you're busy looking for updates? Just a word of warning really because when I took blog notes last year I discovered I was just processing information and then a few hours later I had no recall.
Nope. You were in the right day and the rest of us were behind
christine's always done paper notes, she can multitask like a demon.
from my point of view, i like the live timing updates and mclaren data more than i like the cars. sad but true. qualifying was good today, as ever, but fp1, 2, 3 were quite dull and the race is almost certain to be.
at one point this year i might try and watch a whole race using just twitter :)
"Morning" everyone
I present to you all a video with Taku
:)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cxl4DB3C6nI
At least you won't have to look at THAT man
That could be interesting
:)
Do that for NASCAR!
i couldn't. ever tweet read "meh! danica".
The only way to watch NASCAR
With all the fanboys you could watch 4 hours of twitter and have no idea there was a race on
:)
A good skill to have.
I found FP1 and 2 to be dull and I don't plan to watch any more this season apart from with my actual eyes in person. I'm actually going the other way, I'm starting to ignore the data and trying to read things myself via what I see on the screen.
It has calmed down a bit now she's taking a break from it.
Should be interesting to see if there'll be any crossover viewers from NASCAR for Brazil - there's no Cup race this weekend
There won't be. They barely mentioned Indycar
Plus there's the current hassle of it being on a channel that only a small percentage of folks have.
Ok.. I didn't manage to get a pre-holiday haircut (boo) as the place that was open last Sat afternoon was closed this Sat pm. Kicking myself for not going before quali, now I'll have to fit it in at lunch on Mon/Tues.
Golf started badly and then improved so my score recoverd to something respectable. Dad gave me a slighly chavvy ring for my birthday, I don't wear rings, really nice thought but I'm not sure what to think of that. Gig was exceptional.
Sleep time.
There is that
btw, EJ Viso just tweeted:
This straight is worse than driving on snow. Is actually polished cement with dirt on top.
Aye - all through practice, the cars looked like they were driving on a wet surface. I read that Briscoe had a walk on it earlier and its a little better
Have a good race, will see you the other side. Hoping to commandeer Mum's laptop for timing but doubt I'll be commenting or anything. At least she's been persuaded to delay food until the flag falls.
have fun
good night
Back from breakfast with a random thought:
Jean Todt hasn't announced who the F1 Commissioner will be yet. What if... he's keeping the seat vacant for a certain 7-time world champion in case he decides to stop racing midseason?
It's unlikely, but possible. And very random. :)
What political interest would Shoo have in F1?
Before the race starts, I'm going on record as calling Vettel for the driver championship. Let's meet up in 19 races and see how it turns out...
Also, is Massa not the coolest cat in the paddock? That guy is a class act. He could single handedly turn me from my Ferrari hating ways. Possibly. Maybe.
I'd agree if only he was their best paid driver!
morning all :D I have woken and done my rounds and I have to say that photo of all the world champions is awesome. I just wish it had another Finn :(
Morning :)
I think they lost him somewhere. More than a week without any news. Very very strange.
Maybe he got confused and has come to Melbourne. I should go and find him.
Do that! Tell him he has a column to write.
if he was here, he'd be at Crown. I wonder if they'd let me in to knock on every door?
You could stand in the reception area and shout KIIIIIMMIIIIII!!!!! very very loudly? But better do that in the afternoon. He's asleep now and won't hear.
its 3pm, should I give him another hour or so?
at least :)
Some people would say a lot. ;)
:D
Evening everyone. Another sleepless night getting ready for the race.
Morning everyone :)
I dont think there is any chance todt would do that,
I suspect he will opt for someone a little more ....french
Heikki says good morning :D
http://tweetphoto.com/14357768
Hi all, just finished watching the replay of quali, its just not the same when I dont watch it live. btw, is anyone else still waiting/trying to get onto F1's live timing? I still havent received my registration email from yesterday!!! grrr
I dont know if the ad next to the picture is trying to tell us something? :P
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/short-heikki-jpg
heheh!
I received my registration e-mail pretty promptly on Friday afternoon. But goodness knows how many people requested it yesterday.
I registered again on Thursday and got the email in about 2 minutes, so I'm with you!
I tried to register again a couple of hours ago, but of course my email address has already been registered, cant login because my email has not been confirmed, I think I am officially in formula1.com limbo land :)
sorry to hear that Darren. Did you on a previous occasion cause trouble for Bernie in a business deal? ;)
I must have, probably my business deal didnt have enough zero's at the end :)
It's going to get up to 85 degrees Andronov over there at the circuit today. That's pretty warm.
The same has happened to me... luckily I have an alternative e mail address....
Nearly as hot (but not quite) as last year....
Being earlier by a month has helped....
Does Humidity effect the andronov scale?
I believe he has made a comment about not having enough dosh to attract the guys he's like....
It's a temperature scale not anything else so I guess not.
Errr no...
That would be Mr Vettel...
Less laps than both Ferraris and kerpow.....
isnt it based on perceived temperature?
The humidity here was really high the past few days so it seemed really hot, its the same temperature today, but because we have low humidity and a gentle breeze it seems much nicer ;)
He's not in Bahrain...
He's at home this weekend I believe....
Sour Grapes?
Hardly....
Better things to do than PR for Bahrain and who can blame him....
Well you make a good point... I'll have to have a think about that.
Last year's low humidity and gentle breeze in Bahrain translated to standing in front of a hairdrier being sand blasted....
Good for exfoliation though....
Sato has one sweet ride

trying to create a gmail account, you know the part of most registration pages now where you have to type the text as displayed in some very strange way. Well after a couple of attempts (and failing miserably) I tried to click the button so I could hear the text. So this is the text and this is the audio how is that any eaiser??? The Internet gods are out to get me today :D
Oops
text is here http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/gmail-registration-png
audio is here http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/gmail-mp3
I think I have just been contacted by aliens.
Spot the out of place guy...
Someone didn't tell Alfonso that it was a casual affair....
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/
As expected no Kimster or Nelson....
The excited thing about today is that even though they have all qualied we have no idea how this is relative to race pace.
As the season goes on we will get a better idea, but this will change from track to track.
Who will eat though their tyres and be in the pits early? who can one stop? will the red bulls brakes last? will car 3 have to retire for unknown reasons if it is well behind car 4 late in the race?
in front of
Maurice has some Newey words of wisdom....
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2010/mar/14/adrian-newey-red-bull-interview
He seems fairly chipper....
Oh dear Ferrari....
Massa engine change already....
Link to come....
Morning all.
Here's the story on Massa's engine...
http://www.f1technical.net/news/14397
I hope Fernando hasn't been prowling the garage at night....
this is an interesting conversation. I have no recall anyway so I actually find writing stuff down helps me process what's happening and gives me a fighting chance of remembering.
Plus, since I fell out of love with F1 a bit last year, stuff like this keeps it interesting for me. I don't mind not looking directly at those hideous cars :)
I dont know if it has been mentioned, but since there are a lot of fans of doctor Who, he has a game coming to the wii
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99122-Doctor-Who-Travels-Through-TARDIS-to-Wii
Morning peoples, are we all geared up for the race?
I wish it was here now :D
I wish i was there now!
They should swap sakhir for Dubai. our track has way more variations! http://www.trackpedia.com/mediawiki/images/6/69/Dubai_2.jpg
Or they could scrap Abu Dhabi ;)
No way, i would rather have the race there than dubai because its such an awesome place
#TraitorToMyCity
^ Is deluded
Yaaaaaaayyyyy it's race day!!!!!! Hi everyone :D
Morning everyone :)
Not sure if this has been mentioned, haven't seen it on many other sites.
http://en.espnf1.com/bahrain/motorsport/story/11176.html
Hey Lou
hi, how is cape town?
Brilliant
Ate crocodile kebabs yesterday, Cable Car up Table Mountain tomorrow!
Just back from Alice in Wonderland 3D. Was 'meh'
I finally have my UK proxy sorted - we will see how it holds up during the race
Catch up later during the race, see ya
awesome!! Can't wait to see you pics :)
me too, did you use the link that was posted yesterday or something else? I used yesterdays link and it worked well when I wanted to watch quali replay
oops, this was to Jeremy :)
Morning
Finally watching quali replay.
And Karun's replacement in the booth... Is Gary Anderson! Woooooot!
Hello All. 142 minutes to go.
morning
Morning
Morning Lukeh, Lou, Fionn, Nick, lurkers. :D
Has anyone else's twitter gone absolutely mental this morning?
Morning :)
I'm stupidly tired. This time of day doesn't agree with me.
Hey Alison.
I am LOVING this time of day. Just woke up from my nap. :)
Anyone know what the problem was with the Redbulls on Friday and Saturday morning?
is there going to be a parade lap today? morning BTW
Morning :)
No parade lap... I will be doing a radio show later though.
Yep same as yesterday
Practicing heavier runs? Vettel's immense at quali, no need to practice that :P
Giggles Radio! :D Usual time? Will it be all G?
From what I understand, they were doing race simulations mostly in FP.
http://twitter.com/InsideFerrari/status/10464129502
So that is both Ferrari's with new engines now.
Driveshaft for Webber in FP2. (Just went hunting)
I'm surprised they're allowed to change engines between quali and race with no penalty.
i don't understand how they both won't get grid penaltys for changing the engines?
i know. most odd.
They are one of the eight. Penalities come for engine 9 I believe?
Indeed, but the timing of the change is what I thought would incur a penalty.
I guess you can when your name begins with f and ends with errari.
Last year there were penalties applied for changing between quali and the race though.
At least we know they're not biased for Schumi. :D
i could have sworn that if you change your engine between quali and the race you get a 10 place grid drop? Or am I living in the past?
Remember the rules:
Red is Right
Oooooh no I remember. Was it if you changed between quali and the race, that engine couldn't be reused until Abu Dhabi? This was to prevent people using one low milage engine to qualify on.
Yes 4 to 6
This isnt that Ferrari though.
Look at it this way, Ferrari are an engine down already. that is good news for everyone else.
My twitter feed has stopped, at least I can read posts here for my pre-race news!!!
Hmmm... Nah, it doesn't mean anything either way. They'll be able to reuse that engine later on, so there's no real loss for them there.
surely the fia wouldn't be that obvious if they supported Ferrari??
It appears to have blown up. silly website.
they've been MUCH more obvious before. or at least that's what Steven would say. ;)
Nah the engine thing is definitely prejudice against rubens
#nowimjustbeingsilly
http://twitpic.com/18ik0r
Is it just me, or is Jessica starting to look like... well, Nicole?
:D
#confidential
Lou, look away!!!
Yeah I'm pretty sure it has to be only the last race it's used for.
I think from reading the tweets, they will use it in free practice.
Do you agree, though? ;)
You are absolutely correct Alison :)
Oh weird. Have they changed the rules?
I reckon by the end of the year Brundle will have confused them several times and Legard will have tried to correct him mid sentence and also get it wrong.
Not at all! I'm just protecting you from Lou seeing such an absurd statement :P
They can use it in FP1 & 2.
The event is FP3, Quali and the Race as far as engines are concerned.
Mine just woked up.
:D I blame the dress and the oversized glasses. :P
Ah I see :)
Here's the whole thing:
It does seem to be waking up. It knows the F1 is on soon, see
Nice to see Alison so knowledgeable about F1 now. We've done pretty darn well to educate her. :D
It was quite important to young Vettel's end of season as I remember :)
That Sauber is very... um, blank, for a race weekend. I thought they'd have more sponsors by now.
it's just you ;) she looks like jessica... No silly pop group to be seen :)
Indeed so. :D
It's all fine, everything is good. We just need more time, we had less time than that Lotus team y'know....
Hi and bye all.
Hey RG
See ya RG
True. Hey and see ya RG.
Hi guys just spotted an article in the Sunday Times about a online game called
www.secretlewis.com its a game where you help lewis find stolen artefacts around the world, sounds a bit weird but hey if your that big a Lewis fan you might want a look..
Enjoy the GP.
:D
morning/evening all
Looks like a Reebok publicity thing. They may be doing better than what Phillips did with Nico in Brazil last year.
hey
Missed quali due to wedding, but early for GP :D
On twitter @f1_girl has reminded me that there is no penalty for the first engine change per driver. I forgot all about the free engine change. It was stupid last year too.
AHH. That's the one.
as if those rules weren't confusing enough
what a beautiful day, early evening. looking out of the window, seeing nothing, I am in the clouds ... can focus on racing :-)
Hey Wolf.
Gary Anderson is in our booth now. He's keeping Alex on the sidelines for the most part. :D
me watching BBC, I will only turn the Star Sports thing if the stream fails. avoided them successfuly yesterday :-)
Ahhh. Gary does make the Star Sports commentary much better then previously though. :)
But yeah, I'll be watching the Beeb tonight as well. :D
If only. I ight have to pay for a VPN connection to the UK
Our friends from 2009 are still streaming, so I may not need to pay for a VPN just yet.
Hmmm, I wonder how long they will last through the race. Hope it works OK.
Aus TV seem to be spending more time with the hopeless local commentators and much less with the BBC crew
not that bad, costs same as one and half beer in a bar :-)
But i've already been out and spent that on the beer :D
that chnages the situation entirely :-)
not sure if anyone mentioned here - Chandhoks photo album:
http://picasaweb.google.com/kcpicturesandmedia
When does the BBC pre-show start, 30 minutes?
Morning.
Mrs. Goat is making pre-race pancakes ;)
Does anyone know what tyres each driver qualified on in Q3?
Yup, at 10 minutes past the hour.
I believe everyone is on softs except Sutil.
Morning :)
Everyone except Sutil is on softs.
thanks
Everyone except sutil on super duper softs. Sutil on the extra mediums ;)
That could make things very interesting
Thanks Alison. Where did you find that out?
so Sutil for podium unless he himself prefers gravel, rear of another car or a tyre wall
I watched the quali, the commentators mentioned it.
it was all over twitter yesterday after quali :-)
Well, Kimi isn't around to hit him
you have a much much better memory than me!! :)
I am going to interpret this photo as the boys are still friends and say 'yay!"
http://twitpic.com/18j44j
Ah which ones? I was listening to 5 Live.
Maybe I should be taking notes because I missed that one!
:D I had 5live on.
I just have ridiculous memory recall I think :P
Don't think so...
Alison is the next Steven Roy
I do remember penalties for gearbox swaps, but I'm not sure if anyone swapped engines between quali and race.
That would be VERY impressive for Alison. :D
Hahahaha erm no.
that piece of rope or what is it hanging from the tree does not do Heikki's looks any favours :-)
:D
jenson appears to be talking to thin air ...
Boo hoo...
Didnt the Sauber's blow them in Quali at one point?
It's OK, Kimi chases trees now
im sure there were engine swaps it's just the first one is free.
The fuel consumption thing will only be clear after today....
Whilst we have had some idea on tyre usage none of us really know how the fuel consumption will play out...
To stop anyone using an engine just for quali :)
No trees attacked in Sweden or Mexico....
Not many trees about in Jordan...
or really how the tyre wear is with full tanks
Yeah I think we got to the bottom of it, no penalty but you can't use it again until the last race.
True. I think a corner attacked in Mexico
I am really upset at the official live timing now. My activation e-mail hasn't arrived, but I've just received the e-mail telling me to re-register. I have now tried... ...and the system not only won't let me, but won't tell me why.
The McLaren one still doesn't load. So it looks like I won't be able to have live timing at all this season :(
We can only really tell that by knowing how heavy the cars are.
he can do with just some slopes :-)
That's very odd. I registered just now. I got the email as soon as I registered. Maybe it's an issue with your email provider?
Try another e mail address Alianora... it worked for me...
heavy :-)
Try another e mail address Alianora... it worked for me... {Comment #217}
I did. It didn't work for me :(
Stange. Mine came through immediatly
It's a talent...
Yeah I had to use a second email address too
Maybe he is being haunted by Louise?
You have tried with two different addresses and neither worked?...
Poo....
Stange. Mine came through immediatly {Comment #220}
Well, I'm now completely sick of the FOM system treating me differently from other people as well as not doing what it claims to do for me in the first place...
I also had no probs with email, what was problem for me that login and password boxes on the screen were covered by LG ad, and there was no way to make them re-appear even after closing the ad. tried 4 different browsers. than suddenly, an hour later it fixed itself
What browser are you using, Alia? Maybe it's browser sensitive?
Try this if you need another address
http://10minutemail.com/10MinuteMail/index.html
just make sure you have your cookies to keep you logged in
Ah yes, I had issues with that advert.... I couldn't get to the links to open the timing page without going over it and having it pop up. Then the x in the corner is back at the top again..... It was like one of those buzzer wire games getting it open.
What browser are you using, Alia? Maybe it's browser sensitive? {Comment #227}
I'm using Firefox 3.6.
Ooooh that's genius!
Same as mine. Most odd. :(
It's not the browser then. I think it's the web site. It too me about 5 goes to recognise my email address
Wow - whoever thought of that is definitely a genius. Disposable email - that's a first!
and I bet it is biodegradable :-)
i would never haunt... oh you mean...
Hurrah! Using the electrodegradable e-mail worked! Maybe Yahoo! is so allergic to FOM e-mails that it doesn't even put them in the spam bin...
Yaaaaaay!!!
Humm, my yahoo email would not work either, managed ok with gmail account tho
Morning guys. How be we?
ooooo. Weird
Aussi pre-race starting. I'm hating the commentators already
So are we all going to use LCLT for the race?
:D
Definitely, gotta love the FBFB :)
yep, bring on BBC guys :)
So are we all going to use LCLT for the race? {Comment #243}
I'll be using TV for the race, so I'll disappear pretty soon...
Oh dear. Three of them now. MUTE
can't miss out on fbfb :)
I'm still a doohickey girl!
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/14/live-bahrain-2010-the-race/
The HRT cars are starting from the pits...
3 x useless = ??? :D
Who are they?
its still better than having cam mcconville!
Not much
I saw on twitter they're expected to be in the pits lots and the race will be a test session for them
I reeeally didn't like him. Greg Rust was a close second though.
TV guy
Ex- 500cc rider
Ex touring car driver.
All love Mark Webber apparently
aka Greg Rust, Daryl Beattie and Craig Baird
Craig Baird. Oh dear!
He is my favourite of the three solely because he's a Kiwi. Not that I've actually listened to what he has to say.
It's not so bad in mute, it's jsut three guys waving their arms around ;-)
Heh - you don't want to really!
oh no, bbc is buffering again, but James Allen is on my TV! Lose lose situation!
Morning folks - how goes stuff?
:)
These classic f1 cars look awesome. Looks like they had to shoehorn Mansell in!
Could someone please give the driver physio's the passes please? Some drivers for Brundle would be nice
Thoughts everyone?
Well... I get the feeling it's going to be a long year.
i fear you may be correct.
Should we talk Fantasy Racers in here?
263 points, of the scoring players in our league, I'm 15th last, 432nd overall
The race: 2 out of 5.
Not a great race aided by a poor new layout.
Shame for Vettel, but still a great drive by Alonso
Ha-haaaa
:D
2010 Bahrain Grand Prix (Rd 1) - http://formula1archive.blogspot.com/2010/03/2010-bahrain-grand-prix-sakhir-round-1.html
Wow - 237th out of 450 in Fantasy Racers
:/
Wow - opening lap in the IRL GP of Brazil - already a massive crash. Ugh....
Who's involved?
Is this the Sao Paolo street race?
Marco Andretti, he's under another car but okay. Taku crashed also
Milka gained an easy 5 spots
The more things change...
Is the Canadian ex-Ferrari F1 guy there?
Yep - Dixon, Castroneves, Sato, Andretti and Moraes. Moraes sitting on top of Andretti, but Dixon and Castro have made it back to the pits.
One lap into the season and he has crashed already. Is his car magnetic?
we can only hope so
Canadian ex-Ferrari?? Gilles?
Ooooh, Dixon out. Is Dario leading, then?
He's a crash magnet alright
Simona still the first lady driver in the race.
Sato, Moraies, Marco, HCN and one of the Target cars involved
Yep
What? Not Danica?
Who's she?
Danica is having an awful weekend. Qualified 22nd out of 24 - is currently 13th
I saw her in F-BMW, a very good driver. There are 4 girls in the race
Simons de Silvestro.
Should have won the Indy Lights title last year.
Should be SimonA
She's the Swiss-Miss (as they call her) and she's very good. She drove in Atlantics and not Lights
If you're not seeing it, it's on Indycar.com with radio commentary or Channelsurfing.net with just engine sounds
#fantasyracers
LCM Barato's stellar performance saw it come 11096th in the overall league and penultimate place in the F1 Rejects league. It scored 120 points, had a driver (Chandhok) who score negative points and only one driver (Kovalainen) scoring more than 50 points.
The school report says, "Must do better".
LCM Alfa was only saved from a similar fate by the inspired choice of Felipe Massa. He scored 179 points, which was 58.3% of the entire team's tally! Kubica at least managed to finish and between him, Senna and de la Rosa, the team dragged in 307 points - but still didn't make the top 10000 overall or the top 400 in Fantasy Racers.
LCM Fire Lizard had a middling race. Button and Hamilton performed well, bringing 159 and 179 points to the table respectively. The Force India drivers had more troubled races but even Sutil scored more points than any individual in LCM Alfa. LCM Fire Lizard attained 427 points to come 7524th in the overall league. It was 6th in the F1 Fanatics league.
LCM Dragons was slightly disappointing. Then again, the only difference between it and LCM Fire Lizard this race was that Massa was in instead of Button. As a result, it scored 70 more points. It's 207th in the Panda Raing 2010 league.
LCM Caro scored best of my teams. Having Alonso, Hamilton and Vettel in the same squad proved to be a good idea. So good that it got 637 points and stands 1595th in the overall league!
ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/14/no-refuelling-equals-zero-entertainment/
Hmmmm... thunderstorm in Brazil now - this a fun race
Just looked up at the feed on another screen and saw one car parked and lots of rain and assume the race had stopped but they are racing in the rain
Simona not even bothering to take the first corner. Goes straight on with her slick tyres.
No - they're under full course yellow because of a couple of spinners. The rain came very, very quickly
Red flag in Brazil
Is it a temporary or permanent stop? Who is winning?
Kubica has joined Trulli in Team Blame Sutil :)
http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?id=47971&PO=47971
Temporary. Rain has stopped. Looking for a restart in about 10 minutes
You want bad weather? Check out these storm pics from where I used to live: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/3443374/Southerly-buster-hits-Wellington
http://twitter.com/CroftyF1/
Crofty has some good thoughts BTW...
....and we are go again
Wrong thread. sorry
Vettel did not have an exhaust problem but a problem with the engine electrics. I guess that means a Renault rather than Red Bull problem
http://www.aut...s/report.php/id/82153
blimey, it was photoshopped!
The 18 world champions present in Bahrain were pulled together for a group photoshoot this afternoon. Unfortunately, it didn’t pan out as the organisers had hoped because Alain Prost and Michael Schumacher were late. They had to be shot separately and added to the shot using Photoshop.
http://www.attwilliams.com/news/view/1257
I knew it.
Thought it looked odd...
you did say. schumi is making a habit of being late.
...and williams still hate schumi.
To be honest, a bunch of them look like they've been photoshopped in.
I swear this is the 3rd time or so this weekend I've read about Schumi being late for something
Probably thinks he is the seven time world champion and everyone will wait for him cos he is Michael Schumacher.
I didn't realise the drivers were actually protesting on the grid regarding their physios not being allowed access, by not going on the grid as well...
is there a bbc forum replay anywhere, or do they not do that?
should be on the bbc f1 page
There's one on the BBCF1 page, as Leigh says
From Jake's Twitter
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00rr5sw/Formula_1_2010_The_Bahrain_Grand_Prix_Forum/ For those saying they missed the forum!
Thanks Janna and Lukeh :)
I am surprised those are the only two. Surtees looks like he is over-exposed, Mansell looks like he has been scaled down to fit the gap and Lauda looks like they could only find a waist up shot so they fitted him in where they could regardless how ridiculous it looks
The Champions photo was definitely altered... here's the original that James Allen didn't use
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/405/champions60.jpg
:D
He was half a second late finishing his quali lap
:)
ehehehe.
But there are proper racing legend in that photo who didn't cheat at all
doh!
noblef1: Sebastian Vettel's engine problem in Bahrain was caused by a faulty spark plug. He was mighty unlucky
Prost is in that pic
It is a very long time since I heard of a plug failing. Mind you until the latest burst of openness (Glasnost?) we probably wouldn't have been told
would that be renaults fault?
am home from my rehearsal :) that wasn't as long as i expected it to be. everyone have a nice afternoon?
You would think Williams could tell the difference between Prost who won a championship for them and Lauda who never raced for them. Prost is there and clearly Lauda not him was late and Lauda really was photoshopped in later in such a ridiculous manner.
Looks to me like they left a slot for Schumacher but completely forgot Lauda
Hiya :) yeah it's been fun. Giggles created a legendary moment that isn't worth spoiling unless you see it for yourself :D
Doubt it. Don't know who the plug supplier is. Champion, NGK ?? I don't see Renault making their own plugs. No-one even did that when the turbos were producing 1500 bhp in hand grenade specials for quali
How did the rehearsals go?
Bet you are glad it didn't take too long
oh wait, is that a stand in for scumi?
really really well. i think it's actually ready for the opening night. Shame we have rehearsals monday and tuesday till late. Only problem was a technical one, in that 'the chair' and the hatch weren't always lined up properly.. so we need to alter that tomorrow otherwise we'll have people getting really hurt as they fall.
i really am. it's fun, but i've got an interview tomorrow morning so i can do without being there till midnight.
Oooh, handy thats it's done for the evening then :)
This is the photoshopped pic and everyone is in the same place as the other pic with Lauda and Schumacher added
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/
Link should be http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/03/13/a-gallery-of-world-champions/ for anyone reading in future
but schumi is in both.
Red Bull don't mention the plug supplier in their info page
http://www.redbullracing.com/cs/Satellite/en_INT/001242807166675
If they want more reliable plugs I suggest they dump their current supplier and use Giggles
last call for voicemails about today's race, you has about 15mins to moan / celebrate.
I assume the Vader helmet had been put on someone else's head as a joke
that'd be lukeh :)
try this:
http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/wp-content/uploads/Picture-443.png
Forgot about them. Give me a couple of minutes to formulate something sensible that Christine doesn't need to spend all week editing.
i shoulda said:
+44 121 28 87225
I was confused because they shuffled HIM and Fittipaldi.
The only person missing is Lauda not Schumacher or Prost. Someone at Williams is confused
that is the worst picture i have ever seen of Jenson...
I shall do a bit of plugging before I'm busy for a while... if you didn't see it earlier, I have my own little grading system for the races reviewing the action. Please feel free to check it out :) http://gridwalktalk.wordpress.com/2010/03/14/bahrain-grand-prix-2010-ferrari-reign-supreme/
it sort of looks like someone else, like they got the tea boy to stand in for the man.
indeed. I can't imagine him accepting being at the back almost hidden away from the rest.
Phone message left - now off to get a shower and wash that race away
:)
cheers.
Will there be a live show today?
Not yet.
Trust me, when the live show returns, we'll make a big fuss about it.
Darn. You are not giving me an excess not to walk the dog in the rain....
Message left eventually
2 weeks (ish), chap.
ta.
Good evening. I now have a netbook. :) An HP with Win7
Snap! :P
Evening pat
Nice!
Since it is too late for a message (and I prefer to leave thoughts in written form anyway), here are my general thoughts.....
The Bahrain race was a big let down. I think the excessive field spread was due in equal parts to the no-refuelling and to the changes to the track layout.
I was expecting a small group of cars to pull away from the field but I had hoped they'd be able to use tyre strategy to make a race of it. In some respect every team was feeling their way a bit so I hope on a shorter track and with teams being a little less tentative as they grow more comfortable, the situation will improve a little. The main problem remains the same as the main problem in 2009 - the aero effect on the following car. Messing about with tyre stops isn't going to change that.
Too late to leave a message?
go for it, show delayed due to f1 minute recording :)
Cool :)
It was a nice early birthday present, since I'll be on holiday for the day itself.
we can read those out, or you still have chance to ring.
I'm terrible at speaking out loud, I stumble and get flustered. I'd like to expand my thoughts a bit and since I wasn't here earlier I was going to do that anyway, whether you use them or not. I may put them in a different thread.
no worries, go for it.
Sounds like a guest post to me!
I actually really enjoyed today. Sorry if that's controversial. Maybe that's partly down to my amazing predictioning success though which Nick is still trying to muscle in on :P
It might be wise to let him tbh. Then I can at least blame the inevitable downturn on him :D
That may be better actually, it is very much a blog post sort of thing.
I had no access to live timing because despite the app being available for my Nokia, it wouldn't accept the @ symbol, and I didn't have my netbook yet. Plus I had Legard.
Wow Alison. Stop being so controversial
;)
We definitely need a voicemail if it's positive!
My thoughts go with you pat. My internet and freeview were going all wrong today and luckily my net settled in the end with 5 live streaming. But in the time I had legard on he was driving me mental.
I knew I forgot to do something earlier :(
Do it, do it.
I don't have the time now. I'm about to head out.
I did check comments and twitter very briefly on my phone
Aaaargh what would I say??
NIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK help me!!!!
Boooo.
If Alonso wins again, I will do an extra long one ;)
Just say what you thought of the race, of how Vettel did, and if the result surprised you or not. Easy peasy. 0121 28 87225 :)
Deal :)
I wrote some notes for a voicemail I left and it ended up being positive
Right.
I somehow managed to get in every F1 session, every IRL session and every GP2 session (bar one). Time to go outside and refresh myself in the pub
Sent a VM ;)
*secretly hopes it will be forgotten about* ;)
Woooo!
You say he had nothing to do with your FR team and as soon as you are asked a question you are begging him for help. They want your opinion not his.
It probably will!
hehe well lets hope i remember :P
Who won the IRL race. I was watching it with the sound down listening to Giggles radio. I ended up very confused. At one point I said out loud "who is driving that?" and Giggles said John Mayer.
Will Power took Hunter-Reay on the second-last lap after Briscoe crashed out from the lead under pressure with 6 laps to go.
Fantastic race in the end.
looks like it was all smiles at mclaren this weekend..

Thanks!
Hellooo Peoples. I've been away from my computer today so couldn't live comment!
How did we all think the race was? The people i was with had mixed reactions....
Sorry RubberGoat
They'd be correct
We all thought it was one of the best races in recent memory. It had everything, trees, sand, urm... Jacques. Yep.
Aww, cheer up Jense!
I enjoyed the beginning and the end!
F1 Minute stuff:
http://www.f1minute.com/2010/03/14/14-mar-10-alonso-leads-a-ferrari-1-2-in-bahrain/
http://www.f1minute.com/2010/03/14/fernandos-first-for-ferrari/
This shows the difference in F1. While you are a competing world champion you get someone to push your hands in clay. When you won it 30 years ago you do it yourself because no-one needs to be nice to you any more

oh my this morning is certainly a struggle. More sleep please!
Dear BBC, Please put the forum up, I wanna watch.
Ta
It was linked to earlier.
Christine, I sent you an email. It seemed a bit less terrifying than skype recording. Dw if I spent too much time faffing :)
Oooh, fabulous! Thank you :)
dear Jon, http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00rr5sw/Formula_1_2010_The_Bahrain_Grand_Prix_Forum/
Yours sincerly, BBC
and if you want to use any of my comment feel free to lift the bits you want and to chop it around into normal English
I now realise I have Mr C's affliction of talking very fast.
oh they aren't putting it all on the iplayer now :(
BOOO
Thank you Mr Lukeh :)
It was never on iplayer before was it? Just on their website. I was surprised to see practice on iplayer the other day too.
BOO
yeah they are, i guess they want more use of it.
GR
it's not an affliction, it's called "being awesome" :)
Maybe I speak so fast to cover up the fact that what I'm saying is mainly rubbish. There's too much for people to process, they'll never know
#confidential
i'm just watching the f1 forum that i missed earlier... i'm sad that Jenson said no refuelling is easier for them :(
Really good voice/e-mail Alison, thank you :) I don't think you talk anywhere near as fast as Mr C, so you must have some idea what you're talking about! He's way more waffley.
Yeah that really wasn't the first try..... I did it the first time and it was a proper garble!
I like how there's different types of waffling - the smoothly spoken Alex waffle, quite slow in it's delivery but none the less interesting, then you have the Mr C waffle, which invents such words as jumpbling and herfdler.
Nerfherdler!
Oops, nerfherdler :) I know there was a bit missing!
My favourite thing about the jumpbling is Mr C's sheer disdain at himself.
WHAT'S A JUMPBLING??
We're about to start recording a show, and Mr C has to turn the comments off because he can't multi-task. I can say all kinds of mean things about him now.
We await the outtakes :P
He has to do it cos Christine listens at double speed
ahahahahah - http://twitpic.com/18m9sk - ahahahaha :D
I thought it was Nerf hurdler - someone hurdling nerfs
Make sure the FBFB doesn't tell him. Not sure I trust it
herding, rather than herdling. I don't know what a nerf is.
I meant Mr C's version. No idea either but I think people should hurdle them. Herding them is cruel.
Karun looks petrified!
The only nerf I know is this one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerf
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Wars_creatures#Nerf
"Nerfs are grumpy, antlered herbivores, resembling yaks, raised on many planets, including Alderaan, Gestron and Corellia, for their milk and meat. The average nerf is roughly half a meter long and well over a meter tall. They have long, dull horns protruding from the head."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerfherder
Twitter is interesting :)
Two people from my little town are on there, F1 fans both
On a HRT note, can someone explain why Chandhock was allowed to go into qualifying, there was alot of talk yesterday saying he had to complete 3 laps before qualifying otherwise he couldnt take part. MSA rules say its 3 laps in or before qualifying, so are FIA rules the same? or did they give him a special dispensation.
So why is Franchitti given a Scottish flag while the others use the union flag? Anyone know?
Manipe posted a tweet saying that according to a particular reg qualifying is regarded as practise. In club racing with no FP you have to do three quali laps so I guess F1 is the same. Not how I understood the F1 rules but Manipe was right and the bbc got it wrong
No Scottish racing driver would use that flag
A few years ago SParco (I think) sent out overalls to a group of Scottish drivers (DC, McNish, Franchitti, Cleland, the McRaes probably more) with the union flag on them. Every single one independently sent them back asking for it to be changed
So is the season over, are we resigned to a whole bunch of no-passing races?
Nah, there are the one off races like Australia, Brazil and wherever the rain decides to come down on.
I'm hoping the next one will be a race. I paid good money for tickets!
But in the official series listings?
No way. We are in for a great season.
It's the only decent thing for them to do.
They won't all be like this.
That's not what I expected from you! I hope you are right. Maybe it was just the Bahrain track.....
It has always annoyed me. They should be consistent. Either have a UK flag for all, or if the Scottish drivers want their flag the English should have theirs... it is senseless to mix them.
:D
I'm sure they could have them if they asked....
That's the spirit! Australia will be awesome!
I'm slightly worried that I don't have enough time to prepare for my holiday. I've got blogging to do, prep the laptop so I can watch/listen to stuff on the plane, washing, finish packing. in two evenings.
Are you off to see your sis?
A lot of the reason scottish people won't use the union jack is because it's commonly referred to as English.
I guess there's not so many racist undertones associated with being a proud Scot.
It's honestly never crossed my mind. Dosen't bother me at all. GB isn't a country, so if a scottish/english/welsh/irish person wants to have their own countries flag them im behind them!
I have wanted re-fuelling banned since it was first thought of. Actual wheel to wheel racing has not been as good as it should be for a very long time and during his tenure Max introduced a load of fake things like compulsory pit stops to artifically change positions and have fake overtakes of cars that are only temporarily on the same part of the track because one has pitted and the other hasn't and is 60-70kg lighter.
Now we are back to the situation where in the majority of cases to gain a position a driver has to pass the man in front and that is how it should be. The on track action was not good today because some moron changed the circuit layout.
I know all season people are going to point out the negatives as if the previous rules provided fabulous racing because people love the status quo
I don't think people will point it out because we've had fabulous racing before, they just want better racing.
I agree. The Scottish should decide what flag the English use ;)
Carl Fogarty always had an English flag on his bike. It is really their choice
How do big fat elephant cars get round anything though?
And all the pitstops are the generally same length so you cant really jump anyone in those
The problem I saw was that these cars, especially the top 8, are so close in speed, and so dependent on aero, that they just cannot overtake one another. Even with the supposed Mclaren speed advantage. Unless someone goes crazy with tyre strategy I can see a lot of processions.
I am!
I do prefer to have an English flag next to my name, you can see it in FR and racing series I drive, I wear English not British.
I don't really care at all. The only person I've met that would ever have an argument about my national identity is Nick. I really think people can wave whatever flag they like. If you feel British or English is no odds to me.
definitely!
Agreed! I change like the wind, which people do find amusing ;)
Funny tweet from during the IndyCar race
Lightning in the area. Great, as I'm the one who holds a stop sign attached to a long metal pole!
I really don't want to go into the history and the politics but the only reason Scotland is not an independent country is beacuse Scotland decided it needed a colony and rather cleverly chose Panama. Unfortunately it turned out to be a complete disaster and something like a quarter of Scotland's wealth was lost. Queen Anne of England saw this as an opportunity to stop all the feuding between the countries so she offered to give a chunk of money (bribe) to the Scottish barons who basically owned the country in return for them selling the country out.
I change depending on which sport I'm watching :)
The cars are narrower than they used to be. They need to sort out the aero out though to give us the kind of racing we deserve. Shooting Tilke would help too
You gotta see the headline on this page: http://www.pitflaps.co.uk
:D
I agree about the cars, but getting rid of refuelling without changing the cars (and without mandating atleast 2 stops) was never going to work
I picked a good time to give Sidepodcast a voicemail, eh? :D
LOL at the EJ caption
Can you think of a single thing this man could tell you that would be of any use to absolutely anyone?
They are not always all going to be on the same tyre strategy and they are not all always going to set their cars up the same. Some will set them up more for quali and other will take a hit in quali to get a better race set up. The trouble is if you have 8 slow corners following each other you get field spread
Change the cars yes, I won't ever agree to telling people they have to stop more than once, that's contrived.
Quite right to
swear alarm
I don't like it either but unless they change the cars they'll have too otherwise it'll just be boring
Oops!
Or: The original name for HRT?
Scuderia Hispania Innovation Team?
If you mandate two pit stops they are just going to wait for the stops rather than try to pass like before. We need tracks with longer, wider straight
That's part of the problem. I think they will always be pretty much the same
:D
I think two tyre compounds and one stop is contrived
Strangely mesmerising is this: http://premium1.uploadit.org/pingu666//jaime-wink.gif
In an ideal world we need wide tracks with longer straights, better cars and no refuelling. I'm saying as we currently have it.
also creepy...
where is that from?
Hey buddy
Yes it is. It contrived to make the only real passes for the leaders in the race too.
On a Jaime-theme. What the bejesus is this all about? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cq9XW8tKDYE
I love the Japanese :D
wow. well.
oh.
just.
wow
BBC2 space bloke is doing the Saturn moon thing that I did on sidepodradio in answer to (RG's?) question
We need to head toward the ideal not hide behind pitstops and hope one day someone will change everything and make it right.
To me I am watching a sporting competition and not an entertainment and above all the sporting competition must be fair to the participants. There is no way a driver should ever take a position from another by any means other than passing him. Having a bunch of statisticians find an empty piece of track for their man to gain time on another is not racing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-UZOx0zjgg
And that is wrong. Make them race on the track
An F1 car power steering. Oh Joy
I suppose we have to wait for other tracks. But neither Webber or Button were able to do anything all race. They just sat there.
That track is pretty stupid. Hamilton struggled to get round Barrichello and he had a much faster car and fresh tyres.
You gotta wonder why they did it, and why they keep doing this? It seems like any idiot knows what makes a good track yet the guys who pay millions to make these circuits from scratch get it wrong every time.
Bahrain was OK before this year and then they had to go and ruin it... the only explanation is that they did it because it looked good on TV...
But that is what has happened for ages. The only difference is we didn't get Kobayashi pass someone who would finish 12 places ahead of him because he was 70kg lighter. Now that he has to race and deliver he failed
that's a good point. but at least his pass was entertaining.
i'll take fake over bordem if that's the choice.
My guess is they were worried about the slow cars being really slow and this way they would get lapped less often and had less chance of screwing up someone's race
He only failed because the, car failed on him..
Mr C!
Just wanted to say all the new race summary stuff on the blog is totally totally awesome. Well done to you and Christine.
Totally. Would be unfair to compare this season and last. He only had 11 laps
thanking you paul. am very pleased it worked, and that people found it useful. it took 12 months to make it happen, but it was worth the wait i hope.
I can't speak for everyone but the FBFB is mindblowing stuff. And now even in the usual mind = blown thing, it is just awesome, awesome work :)
But that is why the problems have existed so long.
(hugs)
i'm not sure i understand. i thought the problems exist because people in charge are basically stupid.
OK I will wait a couple of races before I condemn him as a failure
Fake was adding adjustable front wing flaps that do sweet FA for overtaking. Fake was reducing the rear wing size to reduce some of the downforce. Increase the mechanical grip, you increase the wake.
Because of all the race discussion it hasn't been mentioned but it is awesome
I can't imagine the work that goes in to the race notes and all... I'm really impressed.
Anything that allows for a centralised knowledge base during and after the action has to be awesome - no need for silly questions and a great reference guide for post race blogging!
May I ask everyone a question regarding today's race?
Oh dear :(
I'll just go home now. Everything I know was learned by asking stupid questions :P
Why do I keep defending Kobayashi, I don't even like him.
What difference is he to say, a Vettel who apparantly couldn't overtake to save his life?
Go for it!
If you could do that for GP2, F2, F3, WSR, GP3, FFord, FRenault and any other series you fancy....it would be appreciated ;)
:D
That's not true!!!
I love it, you hardly need to have twitter open anymore which saves on space :)
I said apparantly!
(I'm going write this as an entry to the blog during the week)
With the double-diffuser not being banned until next year, has the no-refuelling rule come in one year too early?
Hold on, aren't you the feeder series guy?
Nononono - I meant that I keep missing stuff and asking people here annoying questions - the FBFB really helped me take it all in today!
I think we can sort this out.
Answer 2 questions;
How many people did he overtake?
How many people overtook him?
Which number is bigger?
:D point proven :D :D
Especially useful when twitter is going to die....during a race....
Good timing, like!
I am but I'm rubbish knowing whats going on in a race!
*after it
Do you not think F1 killed twitter?
Ooh, good spot that man.
Yes, probably. Too many rule changes in too short a period. It's 2005/6 all over again.
It was dead houuuuurs before the F1 was on. Like, the early hours until 6pm or so until was stable.
I'm sure Gavin's head is about to explode having read that....
No, the diffuser ban is one year too late. Or two.
aha. am just messing
with your headWhat I mean is, wouldn't the two changes work better together?
Is your name Nick?
*checks the label in his clothes*
nope!
Probably. Anything to reduce aero is a good thing.
The diffuser ban is essential for making the other changes work.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU!!!!!!!!
hi, what did i miss?
He spoke bad about Brawn. Get him!
No he didn't!
Sorry what was that? I just had to pick my brains up off the floor...
BTW, your headping's awesome. Wish mine was as good.
That is the fundamental problem. If you look at the history of the problem you see that it started when aero got really sophisticated in the late 70s with ground effect so the banned sliding skirts and made the cars lethal, then they made a 6cm minimum ride height compulsory so everyone had cars that were lega in the pits but illegal on the track and still lethal. Then they banned turbos a couple of seasons after they became compulsory.
And they have gone on in that manner. making tweaks of the technical regs without dealing with the fundamental problem that cars with a wing on the nose will always struggle to pass each other unless they are extremely unsophisticated.
So rather than tackle the problem we have had fake pit stops, compulsory re-fuelling etc. We got narrower cars with more aero and less mechanical grip through grooved tyres and then after a dozen years we got less aero (at least in theory) and more mechanical grip through slicks. Two polar opposite solutions supposedly both going to give the same result. Almost the definition of moron and close enough to Einstein's definition of insanity.
At the same time we have gone for long, natural, fast tracks to mickey mouse nonsense like Valencia, Singapore etc.
Speaking of used-to-be-brawn, I think Nico is now my hero :D
@Lou,
I basically asked if the refuelling ban has come a year too early?
who, what? they aren't even a team.. how did they do something wrong?
alrighty then...
On the subject of silly questions did anyone consider that someone was the dreaded you know who to day?
In that case, stop bullying me! It's not allowed.
oooh, no. who?
haha have been attempting to put together a project for my uni interview tomorrow, i'm around.. just kinda working/lurking. I saw a comment appear, clicked on the tab and it was that one... headpings work in mysterious ways.
Vettel didn't finish 15th two seasons in a row in GP2
just a year too early? i'd say a life time too early.. stupid ban.
I propose a stupidity ban.
No because hopefully it will make them more aggressive when cutting aero next season
He was with DAMS who aren't the greatest team in the world. Come on, you know better than to completely judge someone on their Feeder record.
:)
i second this proposal.
But, I'm sure you've said it yourself, it doesn't matter about how they did in the feeder series.
I support anything that is stupid
I used to do race notes that looked like this (on the old site) after they'd been through editing (editing to make sentences longer and more readable). I'd started to cover IRL and GP2 in similar but shorter form, but I've dropped the whole idea because they took ages to write and I could never keep up.
Can the FIA ban themselves?
You'll be supporting the stupid looking new IRL cars then?
Did I?
I don't want to post here in case it is not so I will e-mail you. I have noticed the same thing a couple of times.
My problem is that I'm never around when the races are on, and i can never find a full race on the internet.
No, but Mosley tried many times.....
i agree with all of he above, but we can't reverse time. cars need a certain amount of space to sell sponsorship (wings), need to go faster than feeder series to remain relevant (engine) and circuits need to not kill drivers (tilke).
i kind of except it'll never be like it used to be, and because it can't, maybe it should just be entertaining.
Can we have a clue? ;)
e-mail sent
Nothing gets chosen for the IRL until the middle of May. There are different designs and manufacturers to choose from
ta.
I'm still trying to work out the question, there are too many you know whos.
I think they should all wear batman suits in them.
hehehe!
What a great time to make a choice and deflect attention from their biggest race of the year!
Anyone who finishes in a position one year with no experience and then the following year finsihes in exactly the same position despit having a year's experience is not a great driver. He had Toyota money and still couldn't get a great team? Tells you everything
I've been using torrents, but thanks to a nice discount I'll be doing less of that soon and recording to Sky+. Much less hassle and feels good to be a bit more above board.
My first thought too. To be honest I can't see them choosing the Delta Wing anyway
I think they want to announce it at the biggest race of the year when it will get noticed
What I have said is some drivers do great there but not in F1 and some do it the other way round but with most there is a continuation
I'm going to assume you are talking about GP2 here.
FOTA had the chance to ban them from F1 and blew it
They want to announce it at the 500 - a prototype may even do a lap at it, which may rule out the Delta Wing
It's not jjust about money for the big teams. They'll get alot of big money people coming to htem, they're oing to pick the best
Steven, could you write up what you'd do to Formula One. I've found your thoughts very intresting :D
Still think if they wanna make F1 more exciting they should play the Jive Bunny And The Mastermixer song that Giggles did today over the races
I am all in favour of giving them space and what's more big flat surfaces sposnsors will love but that cause drag and not downforce. THat way a following car will gain on a leading car
DO you want entertainment or do you want to know they are x percent fast than a car that is not in the race?
Circuits can be safe and good. Spa, Silverston, Monza etc By all means make them safer but there is no need to have ten corners per mile.
It will never be like it used to be but it should be changed so that drivers can race on the track and that is not impossible.
That would be unfair if the person concerned is not who I think/thought he may have been
Yes
The Deta wing is a joke
i think i just don't want to know the winner of the race 20 laps from the end, and certainly not on saturday. barring adverse weather, that's what we'll get in china and spain this year.
agreed.
Good.
I am sure I did that before and they have never changed very much
if they wanna make f1 exciting i think they should listen to the drivers/ fans more. I never want to hear that a rule change not only makes the races dull but has made f1 significantly easier for drivers... and they aren't happy about that.
i think the media built up this season (as usual) waaay too much, meaning (as usual) they set themselves up for a huge fall.
why? its new, innovative, it looks rediculous but it would work (potentially)
But where is the balance? You say you don't like stuff like MotoGP because there's too much overtaking... so how do we fix F1 so it has a few moves and is not a procession?
i think your ideas are mostly sound. the problem is they're quite long term solutions. whereas you could bring back refuelling for australia and the only side effect is people run around with half empty tanks.
worst case, we're where we were last year. right now we're much worse off.
Ah fair enough. I was just intrested to read it. i've only seen a couple of comments.
I listened to the start of the Indycar and what I found interesting was that they were discussing what the bloggers had said. F1 will never do this...
2008 was epic. That's completely what got me into f1. I only watched a few races from that season but it got me pretty hooked.
i definitely agree with that.
for me, 2005, 2006, 2008 are my favourite seasons.
Me too. 2005-2008 were brilliant.
croftie might, on a friday. i bet we could make that happen before the year is out.
That's why I want racing on track. Before you knew after the last pit stop who was going to win and often before that. At Monza in 1971 in a race that was the fastest GP for decades afterwards there were five cars in with a chance of winning going into the last corner. I want to head towards that rather than anything else.
And I spoke to one of the drivers in that race ;)
Overtaking has fallen since 2006. read into that what you will ;)
The only way the "pit stops" this year are going to alter something is if someone makes a complete mess of it.
Can't remember when I got hooked, but I think '97 is my favourite season
and there's less to make a mess of.
Why only on a Friday though? He said something about referring to some overtaking stats which he had misplaced, so I sent him some via twitter. He didn't even respond...
I'm sure Jacques Villeneuve would approve of that.
the mechanics themselves wont mess it up, it'll be a mechanic thing like a sticky wheel or wheel nut or broken gun.
1998 may have been my favourite season, but 2009 got very close.
But they already did. Both Mclarens jumped places because of stops.
bbc won't allow tweets or external discussion when they're on 5live radio. probably a charter thing. can only be done on redbutton/kangarootv
He said during free practice that he had no access to his own account in the box.
Because it does not take into consideration the behaviour of racing drivers. For their entire careers drivers have learned that if they can get their nose into a gpa they can make the rear fit in even though it is slightly wider. Give them a car where the rear which they can't see is twice as wide as the nose and all you will get is crashes.
Please bear in mind Marco Andretti would be driving one of these
AND TAKUMA SATO!
i don't mind that they wont talk about bloggers, but it would be nice for you the powers that be to listen to what is really wanted. I know this is a long standing argument, but hearing the drivers disappointment today is very sad. usually if a race is dull most drivers will say they had fun or whatever. last year fota showed they knew what is needed.. but by sticking with the fia nothing ever happened. i love f1 but when things happen like this it's pretty sad.
Lovely chatting to you lot as always, but unfortunately needs must. Sleep must. Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.
Night all! :D
Actually I was a Hill fan, but as a championship season '97 always stood out for me - and what a finish!!
;)
I sent it to 5LiveF1 and CroftyF1.
Point is, there is no reason why he can't do that in the race...
night tm, cheers for the vm.
Hey, Taku is awesome.
Night TM
some figures to back that up. http://www.cliptheapex.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=822#wrap
yes there is. they're not allowed.
Night dude!
I know nothing. I learned that JV won in 1997 the other day when we played guess the WDC. I know nothing more.... :P
I may write it up sometime but it will be a long read and I am not sure there would be a lot of interest in it
Ah, you did get it in time then. Did wonder! Night.
Says who? Why is it different to FP?
That's what I sent him...
yay, that's your challenge them mr c :P with him on twitter, it will be easier ;)
you know mark hughes will....
FP 1, 2 and 3 are not on terrestrial radio.
Show off
Oh you young'uns - so much too learn
;)
It has been dropping since the 60s
sent who?
will do our best. it seems like the next step and this evening i tweeted him a post.
So they can't read out tweets on Terrestrial Radio? Why can Radio shows do it then?
Crofty!
Gold star for history
Ah! I see.
Probably someone missing their stopping point
Oh yeah! I'm glad you're impressed :D
oo! well he did tweet that he'd be reading lots of twitter this evening :) yay for crofty :)
see: *Alison is Steven's understudy*
Forgot about him. He will probably arrive backwards anyway
not sure. last year we asked for a shoutout after fp3 for qually and the response was, ask us again before the next fp1 and we'll do it.
listen to all the broadcasts and there is a clear line between what goes out on the red button and what goes out to millions more people on the radio. i've no idea what the reason is, i'm sure it's a bbc mandate though, and not something just made up himself.
This is true. but 2006 was an improvement over 2005. since it has just fallen.
Night
sometimes you just get a good year, i wouldnt say the rules were any better, but i may be wrong
goodnight
So texts and messages on 606 are okay, and tweets aren't?
See, Formula 1 is much better now.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/awesomef1-wmv
I remember you saying that.
Probably against the BBC charter or something?
:D
I think my views on this are more Roebuck
Indeed. but the 09 regs didn't get anywhere near the 2006 level of overtaking.
i guess people tune in to listen to commentary not a discussion about gavin's stats.
606 is a different show.
Indeedy
It seems tweets are only okay on 'official' BBC accounts. Crofty's isn't. I don't know if you'd call 5LiveF1's official or not, I think it is [whatever the production people are called]. Whereas something like the Winter Olympics had a feed called @BBC_Winter_Sport or something.
:D
Oh man we used to play that song at school in our swing band. It's infectious.....
PING: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/14/f1-digest-2010-bahrain-gp/
but they didn't read out tweets during the olympic finals?
Another couple of weeks and I won;t be able to teach her anything. THe Force is stron in this one.
That's from Cool Running Lou
actually using Bahrain as an example, in 2006 there were 36 overtaking moves. compared to 16 in 2009.
http://www.cliptheapex.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=822#wrap
I meant the 606 message boards. But I see your point
christ!
They weren't my stats, they were from a site called "Clip The Apex"...
Mm. Now I am done, I never want to talk about the Bahrain GP again :)
I am off to bed, night all.
SEE! I would watch that!!
Night Christine
nicely timed with the smoke btw
Night Christine. Pretend it never happened ;-)
Night Christine
didn't mean to single you out, sorry. it's just not what people are tuning in for.
:)
All I can imagine is coming into turn 11 the cars kicking and dacing in tune to it.
i love that song.. even though i did break my wrist when dancing to it. :)
Night Christine
Night Mrs C
until next year? ;)
night Christine!
I can't remember if they did in the ski-cross qualifying, they talked about twitter but I wasn't paying attention to whether they were tweets. Not in the final though.
Night
I want to talk about the Bahrain GP of 2008 though, good times.
No it's ok - I thought you misunderstood and thought I was plugging my blog.
I sent him a link to the article James linked to below, just to help him out as he mentioned overtaking stats and said that he's misplaced his.
Oops. I hope Lukeh didn't know this before.....
Night Mrs. C.
'09 was awesome too..*hides*
That was when robert Kubica became the pole on pole, getting his first pole in F1!
#thanksVivaF1
he knew i broke my wrist but not to this song :) heh
You had a school swing band
It was to that! What are the chances!
And BMW Sauber's first ever pole as well...
Oh yeah! They went touring to Barcelona but I wasn't allowed to go :(
why?
The Wesnesday quiz didn't specify that *runs*
Mine did too!!!!
But I didn't go, i forget why not in the end.
Night Christine
To be fair, I can't think of anything else that makes you want to dance vigorously enough to break bones.
Anyhoo folks,
I'm off to bed - it's been an intensely busy weekend and I have to become a drone again in the morning
"Break" dancing?
hehehehehehe
night leigh.
i was 11, and fell over :(... i'm still not sure if it was the falling over or the fainting after which broke my wrist... :) lol fun times :)
Niiight!
night
Night,
I had better hit the hay too - gotta be up in a few hours...
okay, Southampton have given me a time for my interview tomorrow, but no other info. They say they have a whole day planned... but i'm not sure if this means after my interview. :s
Its an interview day, will include an interview, campus tour, talk about the coruse etc.
I thought FR driver vaules were fixed this year but Gavin on his blog showed me they are not. Did everyone know this?
http://www.fantasyracers.com/game/drivervalues.php
laters chap.
Pretty much this
night
Good night all those who are leaving
I wouldn't worry about it now. I'm sure it's not that great :P We used to advertise a lot of things and I'll now happily say they were rubbish. Having delivered days like that, I'd say chatting to people informally is way more useful than any organised rubbish.
You have another interview. Well done
so turning up just before the time they have given me is advisable? Falmouth were awesome, they gave me a time and said what time it would be finished etc. Although as there were only 4 of us we could do what we liked...
ditto!
Before I leave, I did mention this in my introductory post too: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/02/25/fantasy-racers-2010-introduction
FTA:
A final note before the graphs is that Danny calculates the value of a driver before each race in a similar way – he has changed the system to something similar to PPM. Basically if a driver achieves a PPM less than that of the average for the entire field, his value is decreased.
This should be much better than last year’s system, which most people complained made it too much of a trading game – because the points calculations also included a popularity factor, which became a loophole which was easily exploited if you were dedicated enough to do so
And I'm off now - see ya tomorrow!
It works like the Beta 2010 version Danny let us try last year. The prices are fixed until cut-off and then Danny looks at the race results and through some genius algorithm decides which driver values should change how much in which direction and then fixes those values until the next cut-off and so on.
what time does it say your interview is?
i got interviews for all 4 of the unis. one tomorrow, one in two week and one in may.. busy busy busy :(
11:20. it seems late in the day to me.. but that could be cause i had to be at Falmouth for 9am..
no thats normal time, turn up for then,
Nah, I doubt there's stuff arranged before that. They won't have students out of bed for a tour at that kind of time.....
just to say;
I had 3 interview days, one was at 10.30,one 12.30 and another at 12, so even though its an "interview day" its not gong to last a whole day
yeah that's what i'm planning to do. means getting up super early still though...
I didn't play that game last year. Gives me hope that I can engineer an improvemnt though
Good
My faculty ran tours and stuff over lunch so they were accessible to morning and afternoon people. You got a tour and then everyone went for lunch at the union. Definitely not an all day thing though!
Have you checked already if you're team lost or gained value?
ah that's good news :) i have to be back at my school for 5 for a rehearsal (which they don't mind if i miss cause they realise uni comes first)
Scarbs explanation of the diffuser starter motor hole issue
http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2010/03/14/bahrain-diffuser-clarification/
I remember one of my interviews was at 5pm. That was a rubbish day.
good but exhausting. Friday ended with me in a huge mess, and very tired, upset, and stressed. Going to Southampton tomorrow is the last thing i need, but it has to be done...
3 interviews in a week.
check-mate
;)
The algorithm isn't genius at all. Danny told me that the formula
used is a guide - there's a certain amount of rounding to be applied
for the drivers value adjustments.
Basically he calculates a driver's points, figures out their PPM in the way I also calculate it, then compares it as a percentage to the average PPM.
Then he multiplies the value of the driver by that percentage, divides by 10 and then adds/subtracts that figure off the value for the next race...
Gained 0.5 million
you win.. lol but it was one of the most tiring weeks ever. plus with the musical i didn't get home till late most days.. bad times.
:(
gavin... sleep!
1.2 for me, i wish i'd bought Alonso now.
Oh Lou :( Look after yourself!
Better than school. Don't be stressed. Be happy that they have found someone with potential amongst all the dead beats they have interviewed
:(
It was important stuff! I blame Steven!
boo. actually in all seriousness that week really has messed me up, it was 3 weeks ago and im still feeling the effects. got quite ill from it
Hehe, but I will go. Good night everyone.
are you sure you're meant to be publicising it?
see ya kathi.
Me too. If I put him in the team for the next race I have to save money somewhere
Good night
Values change in WRC and IRL too. This is going to be complicated
Yes - Danny said it was OK. He specifically said I could publish any info he sent me or details from the website. He also said the formula is not secret.
Night guys - if you have any more questions drop me a line eh?
:) i'd rather not.. it's not a pretty picture atm ;) i'll be okay, second to last week of term coming up. By getting all upset my history teacher did give me a weeks extension on my huge coursework.. so that helps :) needless to say i can't wait till uni and i get to study photography :)
night :)
ahh, ok. i kinda figured it would be on his site if that was the case. do carry on.
I wish I'd done interviews, I remember looking around a couple of places but I don't remember actually discussing things :(
Lies!
You'll get through it all. I'll do my best to help make sure of that then you'll be in uni :D
From a FR perspective....You would have been better off getting Jose Maria Lopez for this race than Lucas di Grassi and Karun Chandhok who got -3 and -4 points.
Not really. It is a game. Look at the values on Thursday night, pick some drivers, see how many points you get, repeat.
And lost you money
Lou!!! I mean it now.....
ha! :P
No idea how long it's been like this but none of the related links to Joe's blog, James Allen, etc actually work on the BBC website
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jakehumphrey/2009/03/welcome_to_my_blog.html
It's the same on all the blogs, not just that page.
:) honestly i'll be alright. Things are just stressful at school, and to an extent at home. it's been a long old term. Having f1 back is awesome though :) come the easter hols i'll be okay.
Hmmmm Lukeh better be looking after you! I'll be cross.....
I am, I promise!
:)
:D
#conspiracy
worth a tweet to benson?
Have done!
good chap.
oooh, just realised i should be doing the daily today.
it might be a bit late.
Salo has a team mate with similar ability to make an impact
Hard to believe Marco was the innocent party in a first lap crash.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/82155
D'oh ;)
Time for sleep here. Night everyone!
Night!
night :)
Good night
I don't know what to do with myself! I've not been properly bored in ages :(
Sleep?
Go buy me a new printer cartridge?
NICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i would suggest watching the GP again.. but that would only make you slightly less bored.. not cure it all together.
Erm no thanks. I want to make proper plans for when Nick comes over but he's not booked flights yet and I'm a bit concerned he's going to choke when he sees how much it's about to cost....
:D
In that case your answer to boredom should be to get an insurance policy
Hah life insurance? Just hours before he had an accident.... Very suspicious!
He is not flying tomorrow.
I suppose panic buying an insurance policy after midnight is a bit suspicious
No but he promised to look at flights tomorrow. That's when he's going to choke! Actually he'll probably forget, that might make it a bit less suspicious.

5livef1: "his name is James you idiot!"
:D
I have surcommed to pressure, i've bought a dead cat
Morning, folks.
The March 15th daily thread is conspicuous by its absence.
it's my job and i was reading gp+, i best get on with it, sorry!
sssshhh!
#confidential.
Mr C is working on it. He only remembered an hour ago he was meant to be writing it.
...and then i promptly forgot.
