We are well and truly into the 2009 season now, with launches and an official entry list to kick start the year. From a drought of F1 news, January has become a flood of teams and drivers talking up their chances for the coming season. We are pretty much recovered from Autosport now, and can start concentrating on what 2009 has to bring.

  • Of course, the first thing it has to offer is ugly cars. We all knew it was coming, and still there was the anticipation of what the first launched chassis would look like. Ferrari did the honours, and there you have it. That's what we're going to be looking at for the next 12 months. Share your thoughts, if you haven't already.
  • We also got the entry list from the FIA, which raised a few questions. There are two empty slots for the team formerly known as Honda. They haven't withdrawn their entry yet, which can only be a positive sign. There's also some wonderment over the numbering system, particularly at Ferrari. Who should be ahead, Kimi or Felipe?
  • Although we are recovered from the trade show, we're still sorting through the media we came home with. Pictures are beginning to filter through to the Sidepodcast Flickr account. Personally, I can't stay on there too long without fainting, but perhaps you will have more luck.

That's by no means an exhaustive list, there's always plenty going on in the comments. Dive right in with whatever is on your mind, and I'll see you in there.

This guy has the highres pictures of the F60 you've all been gagging for.

I had to download them to get rid of the JPEG artifacting that flickr brings. Once on my PC (legal?), they showed up clean and clear.

    Off-topic, in a mid-season F1 08 BAT game, I just came 3rd at Barcelona - in a Super Aguri! :D

Can you explain the mid-season concept to me please? Is it where people have fired their team-mates and you play a pickup game?

Yup, exactly that. When people are either put up for sacking or inactive for 3 days or more, their slots are opened up for anyone to jump in.

    It may corrupt them.

don't really have a lot of choice.

ubuntu sucks in so many ways, and i don't really want to go out and buy a copy of windows xp to replace it.

plus a beta version of a microsoft OS could hardly be any less stable than a released version, right?

Which bits don't you like then?

  • me13/01/2009 at 00:54

Which bits don’t you like then?

the day before we went to paris i did a normal "recommended update" thingy. a safe *ubuntu only* upgrade for security stuff and such.

arrived in paris, no 3g connection. got lost in paris :)

had no 3g connection upon return, and finally fixed it last week in time for the weekend. the problem...

some updated file had set the modem to be a usb storage device for no good reason. looked into it and the file is owned my some guy, somewhere and just gets bundled into the updates package. that's crazy. killing peripherals via a software update is MS territory cira 1999.

wasted hours and hours and hours fixing a problem i wouldn't have had if i was using windows.

  • me13/01/2009 at 00:59

Which bits don’t you like then?

additionally, they knowingly broke wifi with the intrepid release, but still called it stable. european wifi is still broken months after it's release.

it's an embarrassment and i'll happily say linux will never, ever make it onto the mainstream desktop, and it's nothing to do with nasty business practices from MS or anyone else.

  • Andy Taylor13/01/2009 at 01:02

wasted hours and hours and hours fixing a problem i wouldn’t have had if i was using windows.

well, you'd perhaps have wasted the same number of hours fixing a malware infection or something, but it can and still does happen to commercial software from time to time. Recently VMware users discovered that the programmers had left the timeout code in their flagship enterprise product. Result was anyone who powered off a virtual server was unable to start it up again until a patch was released.

I guess I am just happy in my OS X world :)

and on that note I'm off to bed. Night all.

Now about the upcoming season. The car does look bad, but not as awful as I feared. Actually, looking from over the car, I found it prettier than last year's car: http://www.blogdocapelli.com.br/2009/01/comparativo-f2008-x-f60/

Regarding the driver numbers, the brazilian press asked Luca Colajanni about it and he said that Massa would be #3 while Kimi will get #4. So an ammendment to that FIA's list is expected.

    Morning all,

In other news, I sent a link last night to a story on Autosport that MotoGP had switched from Donington to Silverstone. Apparently this requires Silverstone to have some layout changes due to the close proximity of walls towards the track.

It was also interesting to note that the deal has been done because (a) MotoGP have been unhappy with the Donington facilities (especially the paddock) for years and (b) now they have the F1, they will not want to focus so much on the MotoGP.

    Thoughts anyone?

"Suddenly, I felt my heart rate dropped and all of a sudden, my heart stopped beating completely. Everything has become black. At that time, I thought that is what we should feel when you are en route to the afterlife. I do not know how long I went, it was just a simple failure or a state of shock. I just know that my heart stopped beating. At least that's what I felt. "

Some of the allegations were ludicrous. He accused Ron of saying he had to wash his hands because he had been shaking hands with Arabs all day. Mansour Ojjeh has been his business partner for 20 odd years so he is hardly going to be racist against Arabs.

It does look like everyone agreed a deal though and the guy got a cheque to apologise and say nothing more about it.

Wow. Am impressed. Any recommendations so far?

Don't be impressed - I really have nothing else to do. :D

I've managed to watch a couple of films that I've never seen before which is nice.

Shawshank Redemption - superb. Morgan Freeman is possibly the best actor around at the moment.

Blade Runner - Masterpiece. The most influential SciFi film I can think of. *and watching it at the IMAX last night rocked!*

King Kon - 1933 version, preferably not the digitally coloured version. Still better than most current moster movies. Especially the Peter Jackson remake.

Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair - It's Volume 1 and 2 combined with a couple of deleted scenes to make a 4 hour long film. Much more violence *it's uncut...* but it's a much better film this way.

2001 A Space Odyssey - Some of the best practical special effects ever - very subtle.

  • Flibster13/01/2009 at 15:35

Oh yeah - it was the first time I'd watched Shawshank Redemption. Bluray isn't really stretched by it but it does look good.

Morgan Freeman is possibly the best actor around at the moment.

You're absolutely right iont that one.

My favourite movies are actually A unfinished life, Million Ddllar baby and the Shawshank redemption.

Although I am convinced him starring in them is only a coincidence.

    Back on topic.

The more I look at that Ferrari the less ugly it seems to become. After watching that on track video it even sort of starts to make sense.

It actually looks ok out there, although it does have a nasty look from certain angles.

By far not as good looking as any of their cars in the last decade or so.

  • Steven Roy13/01/2009 at 15:54

I was forced to watch the Life of Brian and in the end had to admit it was okay. I was supposed to watch the Holy Grail one but couldn’t get past the fact they were pretending to make clip clop horsey noises.

Life of Brian is OK??? The clip clop horsey noises were necessitated by having no bufget but they just work.

The Sting is one of my top ten faves.

I love The Sting. I have lost count of how often I have seen it.

That front wing still looks ridiculous to me.

When the last change was made and the cars were narrowed and the rear wings lowered etc they looked really odd. I don't remember them looking that ugly and unnatural though.

  • Christine13/01/2009 at 15:59

    Life of Brian is OK???

Thing is, I approached watching it already determined to hate it because I don't like being told what I should and shouldn't like.

So I admit it's okay, but it started from a negative, so that probably means it's really good.

ahh, cheers. no doubt he’ll say what christine said

Hm he probably said what they wrote but I'm not sure it was meant to sound as dramatic.

Life of Brian is the 146th greatest film of all time according to the IMDB list I'm using.

Not bad for a really cheap film - it's also definately one of my favourite comedies of all time.

It can be annoying. It probably just means your experimenting too much, but not enough to crash. (Trust me, I know about crashing after Barcelona)

Decrease it a little. If you testing on hards, and if the number of runs is high, don't put it over 65. You might want to put it at 63 to be safe. Softs should do at 68 or POSSIBLY 70.

  • Selidor13/01/2009 at 18:24

Blade Runner - Masterpiece. The most influential SciFi film I can think of. *and watching it at the IMAX last night rocked!*

Im so jealous! I saw it at the cinema when it was re-released in 2007 and despite being a only a medium sized screen, (i believe it was a 2K digital presentation) it improved the experience no end...one of the few films that demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible!

You do not have to use the same engine for three races in a row, for example, you can save them. So you could avoid using the same engine for Spa and Monza, both really tough tracks on engines. Also crucially, you can change engines after qualifying with no penalty this year. The trouble comes when you need a ninth engine…"

I had no idea I'd spent that much time staring at a screen... although the inclusion of pixar/ghibli and similar on that list helps (lol).

I think I may just have to blame C4 95 through to 97 when I had DD1 and ended up addicted to old films... except that I used to watch old films on wed. aft. at uni... (house was quiet and empty cos everyone else had lectures then) and, um, late night film 4 more recently...

The things I haven't seen are mainly those that only came out last year or the year before....

And there is a distinct lack of anything sci-fi or with cars in on that list!!

  • Steven Roy13/01/2009 at 19:02

I dream about a lot of things, like last night listening to the karting, I imagined myself being flipped by someone.

I listened to the karting podcast last night and one thing confused me. Mr C said he followed me and learned how to take the corners properly. I don't think I was happy with the way i was taking any corner on the track so he must have been adding a little something to whatever he learned from me. I also think the race director has things wrong if he things we were within a few tenths of a good time. I am certain that if we went back this week we would all easily go half a second faster.

    Regarding the driver numbers, the brazilian press asked Luca Colajanni about it and he said that Massa would be #3 while Kimi will get #4. So an ammendment to that FIA’s list is expected. {Felipe Leite - 127 comments ago}

That could be awkward. I don't think the FIA has an appeals mechanism for that, short of sacking and re-hiring the duo. I can see that going down a treat...

I didn't think the FIA would let them either, since only Ferrari currently have permission to supply more than two teams. Either the Force India/Mercedes deal is already on the rocks or (much more likely) the rumour-mongers have yet another error on their list.

  • me13/01/2009 at 20:42

    re this regulation:

The rule forbidding any form of dangerous, erratic or excessively slow driving during Safety Cars has been re-numbered from 40.7 to 40.5. The old Article 40.6 (which concerned pit lane closures) has been deleted entirely.

so if the pitlane is no longer closed, does that mean the new safety car system (dashboard light etc), is going to happen this year?

    So, Toyota are doing a proper online launch. Still doesn’t really explain why they’ve stolen the Batman atmosphere though. {Christine - 37 comments ago}

Batman Begins has a reputation in the techier parts of film circles for having a really good viral campaign. Maybe Toyota wanted some of the vibe - or maybe they're just promoting the next Batman film.

No. This joining RLB business is not going well, but I am persisting - it took me nearly 10 months to join the Fisichella Forum and I'm not going to give up on RLB just because its forum supplier wouldn't let me in on the first go.

    so if the pitlane is no longer closed, does that mean the new safety car system (dashboard light etc), is going to happen this year? {me - 12 comments ago}

I'd say that was likely, though it's not actually written into the regulations. There may be more experimentation before a solution to Safety Cars is formalised.

I registered with ftLog, but then when I tried to log into RLB, ftLog claimed I hadn't registered. It seems to be ftLog rather than RLB itself that's playing up.

Have you subscribed to the RLB forums via ftlog? That might solve it.

Is there an FAQ somewhere you can consult as well?

I activated the account two days ago. I'm trying to do the step after that, which is to use the activated account to log into ftLog. The ftLog FAQ doesn't cover my problem (it assumes that once you've registered, you won't have any problems between registration and using the PM system) and the attached forum is in an unreadable colour scheme for me.

If the RLB forum has anything relevant, I won't be able to read it until I've got past the ftLog login hurdle because the posts have stopped resolving into a forum again.

  • Alianora La Canta13/01/2009 at 21:36

    Is there an option somewhere on the site to resend that e-mail? {Scott Woodwiss - 2 comments ago}

Yes. The question is whether it will work. Given what ftLog has done to me so far, I wouldn't put money on it.

    I have now re-sent the e-mail

  • Scott Woodwiss13/01/2009 at 21:38

That's OK, I can relay any advice they give to here.

I've just created an account on my other e-mail address to see if I get any kind of problems too.

I really liked this bit from James Allen's piece:

apparently Michael Schumacher had lunch at the Mugello test track with Felipe Massa, his manager Nicolas Todt, and test drivers Luca Badoer and Marc Gene. At the time, Kimi Raikkonen was asleep in a Lancia in the car park!

    A Lancia :)

Artistic license, I guess. It can't possibly be the new car because it's too close to the 2008 car in shape and there's too many flick-ups (even if the flick-ups resemble the launch version rather than the race version).

I wouldn't really call it an application. Everyone gets excepted really, it's just a matter of finding a drive. I wouldn't have thought you'd be able to do it right now since we're halfway through our current season. But you could post some report RPs to build your rep before you look for a drive next season.

Mel Brooks is a comedic genius in my mind. Even his not very good films are still funny. Dracula, Dead and loving it still makes me laugh.

I do think that The Producers is his best film, very closely followed by Silent Movie. I love that that only person who speaks is Marcel Marceau

Silent Movie is great - you know when Marcel Marceau died they held a minute's noise? :D

Flibster, I really like your movie selection :-)

Too bad that I don't have that good variety anywhere near me...

On the F60/Massa's video: have you noticed that Massa says that F60's KERS is actually working? Still testing it, but the KERS in that car is not just dead weight...

I don't think I have ever heard of silent movie. I must look out for it.

Don't forget History Of The World Part 1 but my favorite Mel Brooks movie is Blazing Saddles with Young Frankenstein a close 2nd Marty Feldman steals that movie.

Boy, I am away from the site a bit and everyone's taking about movies and some sort of racing going on with Super-Aguri and Honda in the mix....What gives?

"I am away from the action a little bit and everyone gets delusions of grandeur" - Han Solo, Return of the Jedi.

    only one Marx Brothers film

Shocking. Duck Soup and A Night At The Opera are all-time classics, although the hiss on the soundtracks are so bad that you miss half of Groucho's jokes.

The Producers is his best film

Ah yes. Haven't seen it for years. It's now banned from the house; I took Mrs C (my Mrs C, that is, not the Mrs C from round here) to the West End production and she hated it.

I knew 'me' caused problems but now Mrs C is problematic as well.
