Surprise! Lukeh is a little tied up at the moment and thus I am here to bring you your daily post for Friday. Can I just say, TGI Friday has never been more appropriate? No time for complaining though. Last time I wrote a daily, I talked about the many sports we appear to be following, and today seems to be the day it all collides. F1, Le Mans and football. It's gonna be a busy one.

  • Starting with Le Mans, then. Autosport have a really good dedicated section of the site with all things endurance. I particularly enjoy the driver snaps as Anthony Davidson has access to the Peugeot garage. I'm sure you can guess who he finds.
  • In F1 news, Schumacher has decided that the rest of 2010 can be preparation for a better year next year. Firstly, how very pessimistic of him. He isn't normally one to give up in such a fashion, is he? Although having said that, that's probably the wrong description, because he's not giving up at all. 2011?? Oh dear.
  • The World Cup kicks off today, and I would like to point towards two blog posts about them. First is RG, who has predicted exactly what is going to happen throughout the entire tournament. Good old RG predictions. The other link is some self-promotion, a post on my personal blog. Are there any other bloggers in the know that we should be keeping an eye on?
  • Finally, good luck to all the people who are going bowling today or in the near future. It appears to be making a comeback as a popular pastime, so go on and hit some strikes... or something.

As I have been granted access to a daily post one day ahead of schedule, I would like to take this opportunity to abuse my power and wish a happy birthday to my mother for yesterday. That should do it for now, I will see you in the comments!

I feel inordinately happy, especially since I have also remembered that I don't have to wake up at 8am to catch first practise. Instead it'll be a lie-in - but not while I'm still too excited to sleep.

No no no no. Now I miss everything because I have to go to work....

It's just practice. Not something to worry too much about. Most of it is just us chatting, onscreen action tends to be a little slow

We could play Spot The Marmot though

  • Bassano10/06/2010 at 23:31

Record? ROFL. On what?? iplayer ftw....

Takes ages for it to appear sometimes

  • startledbunny10/06/2010 at 23:31

    good morning

i just read this on a weekly email from a gossip site which has no relation to f1 normally.(this means the facts within are dubious)

the name of the site is too rude to post here, i will in twitter though after

    Mike + Nico 4Ever?

The narrative of this year's F1 was supposed

to be about how long it would take for the

last two world champions, Jenson Button and

Lewis Hamilton (now both at McLaren), to fall

out. So far nothing. Red Bull saw the poor

    relationship between their two drivers

embarrassingly out in the open in Turkey. But

that's still nothing to the story at Mercedes.

A source at the German team claims Michael

Schumacher and Nico Rosberg only speak to each

other when the press is near. And at the first

race of the seaon Mercedes were the only team

to be allocated two buildings in the paddock.

So each driver could have his own.

    This could be fun.

  • Scott Woodwiss10/06/2010 at 23:31

I'm still creating my Driving playlist on Spotify, want to keep it to the same kind of songs I have at the moment, any suggestions?

  • Littlepurplegoth10/06/2010 at 23:38

It appears to be a sound rumour though... before the season even started Nico was suggesting that he was just hoping to be allowed to get on with his job.

  • me10/06/2010 at 23:38

Just out of curiosity, it is just for the opening game right?

yeah, maybe go up before then. just a place we can centralise discussion and ask questions is guess.

  • RG10/06/2010 at 23:38

    We'll see....

Canada is awesome. So awesome the awesomest team in the world had decided to win their only ever race there

  • me10/06/2010 at 23:40

I think he means, is it for the opening game or both of tomorrow's games?

oh. umm, both i hope. we'll need a lot of guest writers if we do one per game.

Am thinking of the Joe thing at Silverstone but am not staying and won't be able to drive back as there will be alkiehool

When is this? Andy mentioned it but wasn't very, um, specific. And I live 30 mins away.... (well, on the backroads)

  • Pat W11/06/2010 at 00:00

cats are good, unless you don't like cat litter, or molted fur, or scratched furniture.

(starting to wonder why i have cats now)

I find them to be selfish gits but each to their own ;)

That's why I like them. Dogs are too needy.

On a segue... Local reporting were showing Jacques Villeneuve and MSC at a local safety testing / road testing / car proving grounds. The meeting was to promote car safety and safety technologies.

During the wrap-up press conference, JV and MSC were at a press-question style table and a reporter asked.to the effect of "Michael, in regards to blind spot warning systems, if you had them in 1997, would you have been able to avoid the accident?"

You could see MSC turn from a light caramel to a solid plum in about 4 seconds. It was too funny!

I know a thing or two about resolution as well, having spent a few years calibrating a camera on board Hubble.

Let me make this clear: if you have perfect eyesight, then at one foot away the iPhone 4’s pixels are resolved. The picture will look pixellated. If you have average eyesight, the picture will look just fine. So in a sense, both Jobs and Soneira are correct.

How much does a full sized Kovi-running-bare-chested-in-the-snow cut-out cost?

Ah now I don't know if the cutouts co does those just yet.. They do other drivers though...

I'm told that there was almost a fight in the staff room of the local M&S about who would get to take home the cutout of Lewis that they had been sent when the clothing range launched though. I'm also told that they are all suitably disapointed that Jenson isn't coming in on the same deal.....

Well this is the thing about the Danes. They're a very quiet kind of people. They don't try and excel, they're happy to be mediocre. Therefore the football team operates the same way.

They should qualify, they have the players, but they don't have the attitude to do it...

    So are Ferrari

Here in the paddock at the Montreal circuit, people are already working out how they can fit in watching some of the opening matches around the busy F1 schedule, nowhere more so than in the Ferrari camp, as one would expect from an Italian team with one Brazilian and one Spanish driver, thus representing three of the strongest football nations on the planet.

Franck will be in the #2 car at the start tomorrow. Story is about to go up on you-know-which WEBSITE

    YES!

What colour shoes did he have on today? It must be time for some red.

  • Pat W11/06/2010 at 11:34

Why does Le Mans have to have it's qualifying sessions at night?

New drivers have to be cleared as safe to run in traffic in the dark so they have a minimum number of laps to complete. 10 I think they said?

  • Stuart C11/06/2010 at 11:35

What colour shoes did he have on today?

Couldn't see, unfortunately. He was sitting behind the others.

Why does Le Mans have to have it's qualifying sessions at night?

Pure vindictiveness by the French – it's so that all the bars are shut by the time I knock off.

in my head i read it as mexicola, and decided it was meant to be.

Hi. Just popping by to see what's going on. Reading the comments I realise that being stuck in a hospital room with no way of watching the World Cup isn't such a bad place to be after all :)

I've been told I can go home tomorrow morning - my eye Is looking and feeling lots better but the Doctor wants to keep up the treatment for the rest of the day.

I guess so, another reason to feel I don't really need to be here, but on the other hand I am reasonably cheap and don't need much looking after.

I have an idea for the realtime page - can the current thread part of the page have a toggle that hides some of the post? I'm scrolling up and down to refresh. I am assuming I need to do this on my phone.

Well, that was a convivial lunch, if slightly incongruous – beef paprikash thing with pasta. Andy Priaulx popped over to say hello. They’re having a team strategy meeting before this afternoon’s press conference. Not sure if I’ll be doing that because I have Stefan Mucke and Tomas Enge Q&As to transcribe…

that is a very good question. last years was purple, and if I go for the same yarn again these are my options.

Not possible for me - the only team I had Massa in is LCM Alfa, which is only open to drivers whose names end in "A" and is thus a fixed team. In fact Felipe's the second best scorer of that team...

I can see a network doing it but charging an absolute fortune (like maybe tying it to a £50/month package deal) and therefore still not getting many takers.

don't see it happening. i understand why they've done it. it just neuters that one killer feature.

I understand too, they should reduce prices for those who want to limit their data

£35-40 per month is enough for an 18-24 month period

I can see a network doing it but charging an absolute fortune (like maybe tying it to a £50/month package deal) and therefore still not getting many takers.

could happen. it'd still be worth waiting until we got home and before uploading at that price.

it was the perfect storm on paper:

    1. record

    2. edit / produce

    3. upload

all from one device on the go. step 2 had always been missing, and the minute they introduce it, multitasking ensures data charges skyrocket. grr.

Would you believe my mobile phone provider only allows me 25MB of internet a month before it issues an excess usage fee? Especially amusing since it's a pay-as-you-go phone for everything except internet (which is normally 30p a day).

Sounds like an old deal, is it worth swicthing to a new plan?

It's less bother to stick to the current deal and accept that my phone has a few limitations that have a minor impact on me than to find another provider, mess around with getting the SIM to talk to a non-standard device (no provider has an iPaq in its standard handset list, so I need new data from the relevant provider's tech support whenever I switch providers) and then remember that phone calls home (the main purpose of the device) will cost twice as much because I and the "house mobile" would no longer be on the same provider.

Going to a monthly contract isn't an option because it would at least quadruple my phone bill (assuming a £10/month deal). Plus all the above problems unless I stay with my current provider (in which case lifting the block would be £15/month).

You might be able to stay with your current provider but switch to a different PAYG deal

There is only one PAYG tariff with this provider. I thought there was two (and that the second had the same limit but a different charge rate for calls and texts), but they must have withdrawn it.

so, a short high def clip recorded at the joe meetup was 750MB. let's say i trim the beginning and the end, that's still about 600MB.

and i could've done with uploaded half a dozen of them. so a couple of gb per event?

In practice I think Mr c might have missed a "feature" of the iPhone that Would have kiboshed his plans anyway. I have unlimited data now but I can't upload more than 1 minute of video over 3G. It makes you select the bit you want to send. The only way around it is live "much lower quality" ustreaming which isn't really what he wanted.

My iPaq can multi-task, but it can only have one standard internet connection open at a time* and only one window per browser (one comes pre-installed but it's possible to install others concurrently if you feel like it).

    * - It can have 1 x standard (GRPS), 1 x WIFI and 1 x Bluetooth connection running at once. In theory this means you can have three simultaneous internet connections but in practise other computers have to act as gateways between the phone and the internet on the non-standard connections.

My provider does the same. Internet charging is also done as a midnight cut-off, meaning if I am on the internet with it at the wrong part of the day, a 10-minute blog update could cost me 60p.

It's only 6 months with a possible 6 month follow up course if I want to get a professional certificate thingy.

But yeah. I want to see if I'm enjoying studying these kinds of subjects before I commit to doing something else full time. I can't afford to have another false start.

Bernie giving the teams some grief over garage advertising

Power play over the Pirelli deal it is thought

    Adam Cooper writes: here

  • Bassano11/06/2010 at 21:05

He [Bernie] also denied that there was any connection with the tyre negotiations: “It’s nothing to do with Pirelli. I hope Pirelli don’t get the contract, and Michelin don’t get it, and we can have Avon…”

    Pirelli it is then

Or a Pirelli/Michelin tyre war, probably with each company having to bring one compound at the start of the year which must cover all dry-weather circumstances...

I'm always on the look out for good ones. My favourite is probably the Eye TV app from Elgato because I use their tv tuner on my mac at home and can now watch live or recorded tv on my iphone or ipad anywhere I have WiFi or 3G. The network I use in Australia is fast enough for this.

surely you were curious to hear it?

  • Alison11/06/2010 at 22:33

Those edits are really good. I should really look at them more. I remember really liking the Spain one and then not remembering to look again.

Spa was good that year. Alonso forcing Hamilton as wide as possible. ;)

  • Pat W11/06/2010 at 22:45

to me that's been the only thing of interest this whole season. it's the main reason i'm even watching canada. hoping for a '07 replay :)

To me it was driver error (Vettel's), there was a gap and he got it wrong. I didn't understand all the comments that came after it, the team made a comment and suddenly people were inventing conspiracies... Way too early for that.

With that in mind, it felt like people were trying to overlay that on to McLaren and invent one there too...

  • Alianora La Canta11/06/2010 at 22:46

    Alia, can you explain weighted and non-weighted results? {Comment #745}

The survey results come in two columns.

The "non-weighted" results are the actual survey results.

The "weighted" results were put through the results of a viewing profile developed last year after some other survey based on audience data. The numbers are very different, which I believe is due to the factors explained early on in the entry (i.e. the people who are willing to spend 4 hours in front of a screen filling in a survey tend to have a certain amount of commitment to F1, which tends to be associated with avid fans who have followed the sport for a while).

However, if my explanation is not clear in the entry, that suggests I need to figure out a better explanation and then put it in. Otherwise most of the entry makes little sense.

  • James11/06/2010 at 22:46

I find him very boring to race but maybe he has a career in commentating

Lets hope he can be convinced to come and do some more for the BBC ;)

  • Alison11/06/2010 at 22:46

What struck me when I watched that accident was how quickly the marshall had the yellow flags out. He'd hardly gone offline and suddenly he's swapped out his green flag.

  • me11/06/2010 at 22:47

Spa was good that year. Alonso forcing Hamilton as wide as possible. ;)

that kind of thing. i'd like that from lew/but and vet/web for the rest of the season please.

  • James11/06/2010 at 22:48

what happened in canada in 07, other than Alonso going off at turn 1 half a dozen times?

I can still remember Martin Brundle on the gridwalk suggesting Alonso may try to make a move on Hamilton into turn 1.

Weighted in favour of ardent fans?

i think we will. and possibly between the 4 of them as well. Although I'd like to see Hamilton/Alonso go at it.

without it, i'm not looking forward to valencia :)

  • me11/06/2010 at 22:53

Weighted in favour of ardent fans?

    as alia says:

"Clearly those who fill in these sorts of surveys are the highly dedicated, long-term followers of the sport. As someone who has watched since 1993, I classify squarely into that category. "

  • Bassano11/06/2010 at 22:54

    as alia says:

    Yeah, I got that.

I'm trying to understand the 'weighting', seems a bit misleading to me

I suspect they are trying to get the survery to indicate what they want it to

  • Alianora La Canta11/06/2010 at 22:55

    Weighted in favour of ardent fans? {Comment #780}

The opposite. The non-weighted results had 66.8% of respondents having watched F1 for over 10 years, 84.2% watching more than 12 races last year, 85.4% watching races from beginning to end and just under 70% describing F1 as their favourite sport.

So the weighted results bring the casual viewers into play more - but there is a certain amount of imprecision due to how few of them responded to the survey (as if a 4-hour survey is going to attract hordes of spectators at the margins of F1 support).

  • me11/06/2010 at 22:55

I suspect they are trying to get the survery to indicate what they want it to

almost certainly. they are weighting the results back to account for fans who aren't dedicated enough to fill in surveys.

This years race only needs 1 overtake to be an improvement, there were none last year.

  • Bassano11/06/2010 at 22:56

almost certainly. they are weighting the results back to account for fans who aren't dedicated enough to fill in surveys.

  • Alison11/06/2010 at 22:56

almost certainly. they are weighting the results back to account for fans who aren't dedicated enough to fill in surveys.

    Agreed

  • Littlepurplegoth11/06/2010 at 22:58

Its pretty normal to have weighted and unweighted analysis' of info for surveys though - its about adjusting so that you get a balance of population. I tend to find that work where no weighting has taken place is more likely to suffer from indication bias (but then I spent a sorry amount of last year and this digging the bias out of others results to get a true picture, and not even for cash; so am maybe just a little, um, more of a results geek than your average lpg)

But if you're after the ardent fan, why would you not want to bias the results so as to attract them to you like moths to a flame??

  • Alianora La Canta11/06/2010 at 22:58

    Yeah, I got that.

I'm trying to understand the 'weighting', seems a bit misleading to me

    I suspect they are trying to get the survery to indicate what they want it to {Comment #783}

Possibly. However, the results they have seem to reveal their secrets relatively easily. The casual supporters have put such different answers to the dedicated ones that it is, for example, quite simple to work out which sort of viewer likes using phone apps the most. And therefore why F1 is doing particular things.

  • me11/06/2010 at 22:59

And one of the drivers in the incident saying: dig deeper guys, to the press

it's a hotbed of politics just ripe to explode. i cannot see them keeping a lid on it.

  • Alison11/06/2010 at 23:00

But if you're after the ardent fan, why would you not want to bias the results so as to attract them to you like moths to a flame??

But surely they want more people to watch. They figure they're stuck with the lot of you already :P Who cares what you think ;)

  • Bassano11/06/2010 at 23:00

it's a hotbed of politics just ripe to explode. i cannot see them keeping a lid on it.

That's just patronising! Anyways. They don't care about sport. They care about cash. How do they make people watch who don't already or who do so infrequently?

  • me11/06/2010 at 23:02

Are you all shocked it's not Alonso losing his rag?

i would hope he learnt something from 2007, so no. but we'll see.

  • Alianora La Canta11/06/2010 at 23:02

    Especially as they only listen to what they want to {Comment #792}

It was a point of principle. I wanted my opinion on official record, I wanted to record the process for posterity, so that's what I did.

    More overtaking, keep tracks like Spa & Silverstone {Comment #792}

Those come later in the survey.

  • Littlepurplegoth11/06/2010 at 23:03

But surely they want more people to watch. They figure they're stuck with the lot of you already :P Who cares what you think ;)

The ardent fan is more likely to utilise word of mouth to draw others in, which is a more cost effective (although potentially slower) way of growing your audience share. It also leads to a better long term retention rate, as there is a personal investment in starting your involvement.

  • Alison11/06/2010 at 23:03

Massa is not a threat, so no

I remember having awful arguments when he was formally announced about how he wasn't going to have a mental breakdown and there weren't a lot of people who agreed with me.

That's just patronising! Anyways. They don't care about sport. They care about cash. How do they make people watch who don't already or who do so infrequently?

Noi it's not, the more people who are passionate about the sport will have a greater understanding on why it's failing right now [though the last few races have been brilliant]

If the sport is exciting, the cash will follow as the sponsors trip up over themselves to come back

The world is returning to financial normality

  • me11/06/2010 at 23:04

    that's the one.

  • Alianora La Canta11/06/2010 at 23:06

    But if you're after the ardent fan, why would you not want to bias the results so as to attract them to you like moths to a flame?? {Comment #798}

Because, as the survey results seem to indicate, that takes time. 3-4 years appears to be the crucial timeframe, though that remains a data-backed hypothesis rather than a certainty.

  • Bassano11/06/2010 at 23:06

I remember having awful arguments when he was formally announced about how he wasn't going to have a mental breakdown and there weren't a lot of people who agreed with me.

He needs Rob, I'd love to see if Mr Smedley could drive it as well as he can coach it

He's the talented half of the duo

[ok, that's harsh, but you see my point]

  • Alison11/06/2010 at 23:07

But you don't even agree with each other.... Steven and Mr C could argue forever about refueling. And I'll leave Nick's views on well anything out of it.... There isn't one "ardent fan" viewpoint. Also lets not be naive, money comes before any of our desires or requirements.

  • me11/06/2010 at 23:07

i think it's a good combination. it didn't work with fissi and there's nothing wrong with him as a driver. if rob was that good, what happened?

  • Pat W11/06/2010 at 23:07

really? you have the team boss, bending over backwards to accommodate the opinion of nobody, who was blatantly biased against the innocent party. what the heck do you need?

The Hamilton/Alonso self-destruction at McLaren turned me off intra-team infighting for life. Negativity, paranoia, veiled threats, insults. No thank you.

  • Alison11/06/2010 at 23:08

He definitely is. Massa can be fast but he's a rubbish racer. I'm sure if you put him in the lead he can drive speedily but he'd never get past anyone.

100% agree. the surveys are a means to make the dedicated fan feel loved.

which is a good thing, because people like to feel loved.

fair enough. i don't think you can pass off what happened in turkey as people blowing things out of preparation, or finding things that don't exist. by all means ignore it, but it's something very much worth discussing.

They want more money. If the attendance figures are anything to go by (other indicators that may test this theory come later), there's still quite a bit of capacity to get us ardent fans to give the FOM (and other people associated with F1 such as circuit owners) more money...

Even if their motives were purely "more fans", then knowing the ardent profile means they've got a better idea of what indicators show that a casual fan has become an ardent one. That can be useful because different sorts of fan want different things.

The F60 wasn't as bad as people made out. No driver would have been able to start driving a car half through a season without have time to learn how the car handled. It would have been the same with any of the cars.

  • me11/06/2010 at 23:10

This is very true and may emerge later on if it turns out that there are polarised results in the next section (where things like the refuelling issue lurked on the survey).

i don't see the connection. the car was hopeless and massa had the measure of world champion kimi in the same car. exactly what is a bench mark if that isn't?

Considering what Kimi did in the car in the after Massa's accident, I would have loved to have seen Massa driving it. Ferrari would have finished a comfortable third.

THe car understeered. Massa liked that Kimi didn't. I predicted Alonso beating Massa and proving he is not as good as his reputation simply because Alonso likes the same kind of car as him

He won the championship because McLaren threw it away

The whole (Massa + Rob + F60) was greater than the sum of its parts (in other words, what Mr C said ;) ). A lot greater in the case of the car. That there was no testing time to enable Fisi and the F60 (which required the opposite traits to what Fisi had to be optimised, hence why Kimi went well on occasion) to gel properly didn't help either. (

He has rarely been consistent over a season either and never over a season where his team mate has put him under serious pressure

  • Alianora La Canta11/06/2010 at 23:22

He listened more than Badoer ever did if the radio exchanges were anything to go by. In fact the only complaint I saw Rob make about Fisi in the interviews he did at the end of 2009 was that he was too nice to everyone outside the car!

  • Bassano11/06/2010 at 23:23

I think Badoer drove round each race shouting to himself, "I can't believe they let me drive this thing"

That car required a certain very oversteery style. Massa had it. When Kimi felt there was something to aim for (which was less of the season than one might have hoped), he had it. It's a benchmark, but with a car that appears to be better driven in understeer mode (like this year's Ferrari), matters get a bit complicated.

This... silverstone with my lot is not going to happen any time soon.

(although I do wonder if there is a book in doing the circuit with children in tow... not one that would sell though rofl)

There could be such a book - but not until Bernie makes F1 cheap enough that circuit organisers can afford to make tickets cheaper!

Too true! DS1 says that he could learn everything he needs to from going to every race (and I suspect that home ed by formula one would be very doable, all that history, politics, languages and economics :-) ).

But he also says that he would need to go and see the cars up close to 'do physics'. He has a touching confidence in my ability to fix this :-)
