After the RB5 hit the ground running yesterday, we're now ready to see it in action as the test in Jerez gets underway. In fact, we really do need to see it in action, as it got cut off after only 14 laps. Here's what we'll be looking out for:

  • A couple of teams will be heading out to the desert and favouring Bahrain over the European circuits. Toyota, BMW and Ferrari are the ones we know about, I wonder if anyone else will try and avoid the weather and join them?
  • Williams seem to be running with yet another new livery. There's a lack of sponsorship going on, and some more white on the car than the previous iteration. Will this be anything like the finished product or are they just teasing us?
  • Kathi left us with a great comment from Vettel, who's only summations from his brief ride in the RB5 were: "It's mostly blue and it goes round in circles." Love it. Will he be able to get any more track time today?
  • And of course, given our new found knowledge of KERS, we'll be watching ever so closely for any hints about the device on any teams that may be running it.

That should keep us going. I can't wait to see the car's in action again, hopefully the weather will hold for them. Let us know what you're up to, and I'll see you in the comments.

I think they are just teasing. If you were an F1 team, you'd want the attention too.

if red bull had just revealed the best livery ever i would, yes :)

On another note, Red Bull and especially Newey really are going old school with that rear wing. Case in point: http://www.autosport.com/gallery/picture_free.php/dir/1986spn1/image/l_20-2

And I bet a lot of people would struggle to identify the famous driver in that helmet

    yes i would.

  • Jeremy10/02/2009 at 01:05

What am I up to today? This is my second day off for the week, so I call it my Sunday.

Zoe is finally out of bed and we have just had an awesome conversation about the Large Hadron Collider and other similarly intelligent sounding things over breakfast. I am so lucky to be with someone so smart.

Valentines Day this Saturday people. Don't forget.

  • Jeremy10/02/2009 at 01:06

Berger? My first thought was Teo Fabi though. I have a terrible memory but sometimes it surprises me

His helmet looks strikingly similar to Jean-Christophe Boullions. But this phto is whaaay before his time. Fabi?

I'm guessing Fabi too. I think he was Berger's teammate that year.

  • Steven Roy10/02/2009 at 01:13

The helmet was Berger's before he switched to the more famous version. Teo Fabi had a similar pattern in the Italian colour green, white and red.

  • Ollie10/02/2009 at 01:15

Now that is interesting. I always knew Berger with the very dark blue (yes, it was very dark blue and not black) with red and white Austrain flag motif thing. Thanks Steven.

But I see green, white, and red on the side of his helmet. So shouldn't that be Fabi then?

The 1986 season is about to get started, methinks. The details should be somewhere on yesterday's Daily thread.

    Re: the Williams Livery.

As well as being told about the lighter colour of the new livery whilst I was at Williams, I was also told about sponsorship changes, most of which I'm sure you know anyway, but the chap reeled of a long list of names no longer to appear on the car, and a very short list of new names or increased coverage. Worrying times for Williams I'm sure.

Some big names gone included Inevo and Petrobas, not to mention most of the smaller brands like Hamleys that were all part of the Bauger group. I believe this is the last year of the AT&T contract as well. And don't bank (no pun intended) on RBS being around for much longer either!!

i like that explanation. i don't think it's very good for williams, but in terms of explaining how the credit crunch is affecting f1, that's genius :)

gooood spot! it is, a different shape, but you're right.

  • Scott Woodwiss10/02/2009 at 10:49

Either that or it's one of the battery packs a la what Ferrari's been trying. Mind you, if it is that's a heck of a load of wires stuffed into and around it.

  • me10/02/2009 at 10:49

    some times from bahrain:

    1. R. Kubica BMW Sauber F1.09 ---- 1:34.397

    2. F. Massa Ferrari F60 ---- 1:34.548 +0.151

    3. T. Glock Toyota TF109 ---- 1:35.324 +0.927

  • Jeremy10/02/2009 at 10:52

what the heck is that box at the front?

    piggyback ecu? :P

  • Scott Woodwiss10/02/2009 at 10:53

Hang on, we don’t know how fragile it is. Wait until raceday before we judge the cars!

Well sure, it had a mechanical failure yesterday but even McLaren had reliability issues in 1999 yet they still won the championship that year.

    1. R. Kubica BMW Sauber F1.09 —- 1:34.397 2. F. Massa Ferrari F60 —- 1:34.548 +0.151 3. T. Glock Toyota TF109 —- 1:35.324 +0.927

I think basing it on combined performances, despite different circuits, the current pecking order is (in my opinion):

Red Bull, BMW, Ferrari, Toyota, McLaren, Williams, Renault

Yes yes, I know it's early days yet but I think we should definately start sizing up how everyone's doing compared to the rest of the field.

I want rFactor, Race 07, GT Legends and GTR Evolution. Maybe STCC: The Game as well.

  • Maverick10/02/2009 at 13:42

    GREEN stripes??

Way to go to ruin Red Bull's livery. The green stripes didn't even look good on the Honda last year never mind the liveries that it will clash with.

  • Christine10/02/2009 at 13:43

to make up for the exhaust thing:

    Bourdais looks proper geeky.

  • Mattw10/02/2009 at 13:46

another pic, problem is the cameraman is sat in the same position:

We can see that the exhausts are the same size, but the bodywork cutout on the right is larger.

No idea why - infact from memor, that section of bodywork looks different from the launch pics.

what the heck is that box at the front?

    (of the Renault)

    Radio transmitter?

he’s competing in the 12hrs of sebring for peugeot in march. alongside bourdais. how the heck is le seb going to fit all of this in?

No F1 testing this year remember...

Red Bull, BMW, Ferrari, Toyota, McLaren, Williams, Renault

Ah, but if the McLaren are just under a second off the new Red Bull, then that puts them closer to the BMW than Toyota are, so I suggest it should go:

Red Bull, BMW, Ferrari, McLaren, Toyota, Williams, Renault

That Renault time - oh dear. The car is going like it looks.

Dude, that's like buying the same game 5 times! Just get rFactor and if you look hard enough, you can get nearly all the cars listed above...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/02/2009 at 13:50

No idea why - infact from memor, that section of bodywork looks different from the launch pics.

I'm sure that's because of the angle of the picture. Look at the cutouts - the are cut out at an angle from the horizontal which makes one appear bigger than another from an angle.

Can somebody who knows photography have a look at the picture and give their opinion?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)10/02/2009 at 14:01

  • Lukeh10/02/2009 at 14:32

red bull have some kind of looney electronic pit board:

If it's not broke don't fix it. We've already seen electronic equipment go horribly wrong in the pitlane with ferrari that was unecessary, so i can't see the point in that.

  • Steven Roy10/02/2009 at 14:46

no wonder they have a fat nose:

I hope no-one spills brake fluid when they are topping it up in that Renault and I hope the electronics box doesn't overheat the brake fluid. Seems like unnecessary risks are being taken there to get weight forward.

  • Steven Roy10/02/2009 at 14:51

that must be some kind of anonomly right?

I would guess they are just being careful with the new cars in the wet although the downforce difference will be exacerabted in the wet so maybe.

There are usually private games run on BATracer recreating the real life seasons, including everyone taking the relative names of drivers in the team they're running with from that year.

Num num num, I have a roast beef sarnie :P

  • Mattw10/02/2009 at 15:03

red bull have some kind of looney electronic pit board:

Teams at Le Mans have been using electronic pit boards for years. Some teams even use a electric motor to swing the board out at the right moment.

Wondered how long it would take F1 to catch up.

Can somebody who knows photography have a look at the picture and give their opinion?

That would be me then? (me not 'me')

I am looking at how close the cut out get to the edge of the grey area. The one on the right looks to get closer than the one on the left.

Some times from Bahrain after a two hour delay for fog (so not exactly avoiding the weather):

    Massa - Ferrari - 1:33.656 - 38 laps

    Kubica - BMW Sauber - 1:34.397 - 49 laps

    Glock - Toyota - 1:34.589 - 39 laps

  • Maverick10/02/2009 at 15:21

Times from Jerez: McLaren and Renault look like they've packed up for the afternoon just as the times are dropping so I wouldn't read too much into McLaren's position. Renault on the other hand just look awful, even in the wet it was more than 4 secs off what the RB5 was doing.

    Buemi - Toro Rosso* - 1:19.660 (89 laps)

    Vettel - Red Bull - 1:22.177 (40 laps)

    Hulkenberg - Williams - 1:22.6749 (59 laps)

    Kovalainen - McLaren - 1:23.313 (42 laps)

    Piquet - Renault - 1:29.060 (13 laps)

Goodness me, this will get them into trouble with Alonso AND Ghosn. Or maybe their times just look awful because Alonso hadn;t driven the car yet?

  • me10/02/2009 at 15:31

    they have. from rf1pp:

"Once again today has been compromised by the weather and we have had a few technical issues to solve, which have limited our track time. The result is that we are stuck in the garage, rather than racking up the miles – Nelson has only managed 15 laps. It’s frustrating as track time is precious, but sometimes testing is like that."

what more can we ask :)

  • Journeyer10/02/2009 at 15:32

    what more can we ask

And right on cue. At least Piquet can be relieved that he isn't the problem... for now. :D

But this is dangerous for Renault. More problems equals less running time. Less running time equals less speed. Less speed equals more problems. Vicious spiral there.

  • me10/02/2009 at 15:33

But this is dangerous for Renault. More problems equals less running time. Less running time equals less speed. Less speed equals more problems. Vicious spiral there.

true enough. the weather is actually helping them in the sense that little could be learned in the morning anyways. better to have issues today, rather than the remaining three (which look to be dry).

    yup

English translation says that a car went off at Dry Sack, and they are indeed confirming it was Vettel. Either a driver error, or something broke in the car.

Newey must be hoping it's the former rather than the latter.

  • Maverick10/02/2009 at 16:06

Toyota made a final push in Bahrain, final times:

    1. Glock - Toyota - 1:33.501 - 82 laps

    2. Massa - Ferrari - 1:33.615 - 98 laps

    3. Kubica - BMW Sauber - 1:33.702 - 95 laps

  • me10/02/2009 at 16:06

that was fun. same time, same place tomorrow then?

  • Journeyer10/02/2009 at 16:07

Last 5 minutes. Will anyone else make a final push?

The answer is no. So Buemi tops the tables in a 2008 car, but it's Vettel who does the best among the 2009 cars. But that mechanical issue near the end would've worried him a bit.

BTW, I didn't know Jerez was the Spanish word for sherry. :)

  • Journeyer10/02/2009 at 16:08

    so i've created a drop:

and set the location. now if people look for drops while using their iphone at the circuit, they'll find that one.

kinda handy, but it doesn't really go far enough does it? i mean we would like to geolocate an asset, rather than a drop. so tag all the jerez pics and all the bahrain pics etc.

Autosport reporting Vettel stopped the car as a precaution due to a gearbox sensor failure.

I assume this means they asked him to stop because they were unable to monitor the gearbox so wouldn't have been aware of a problem, rather than having to stop because of a problem.

that's twice they've stopped a car due to supposed paranoia, it's getting a little suspicious isn't it?

  • RG10/02/2009 at 17:32

If anyone cares, their is Celebrity Karting on Sky Sports Xtra from the NIC.

There's also rugby on, so I might watch that.

    Giggles live commenting starts now!

  • Alex Andronov10/02/2009 at 17:47

Tonight I'm off to meet Bassano Clapper. One of the most secretive sidepodcasters there is!

  • Alex Andronov10/02/2009 at 17:48

I am in a train in London Bridge station waiting to depart. And in true sidepodcast style I am already late :)

  • Alex Andronov10/02/2009 at 17:50

And we're off. Our train is overtaking the one on the next platform which has stalled (or rather doesn't depart for 10 mins - trains Ed)

  • Alex Andronov10/02/2009 at 17:52

We are now pulling in to South Bermondsy. How very exciting!

  • Alex Andronov10/02/2009 at 17:55

No-one is here for this momentus occasion?

Oh well. We have now arrived at Queens Road Peckham. Only two stops to go.

  • Alex Andronov10/02/2009 at 17:56

Or is it only one stop? I mean the second stop is the one I get off at. Is that a stop in this sense? Who knows?

  • Christine10/02/2009 at 17:56

Oh well. We have now arrived at Queens Road Peckham. Only two stops to go.

Or is it only one stop? I mean the second stop is the one I get off at. Is that a stop in this sense? Who knows?

There is only one stop to go if you are getting off at the one after that. :)

  • Alex Andronov10/02/2009 at 17:57

    I’m here. It’s very exciting.

    Oh good :)

5 - 7 mins walk from train station

  • Alex Andronov10/02/2009 at 17:59

Thanks coach number three of four you've been a great help :) I'm here now!

  • Steven Roy10/02/2009 at 18:00

Some times I am a bit slow on the uptake. Steve Nichols who left McLaren to go to NASCAR ?? is American so ideally suited to a USF1 team. I can't believe it has taken me this long to remember.

Thanks Kathi. That means Paul di Resta is not doing DTM and McLaren/Mercedes have another program for him which is very interesting

  • Kathi10/02/2009 at 18:22

Thanks Kathi. That means Paul di Resta is not doing DTM and McLaren/Mercedes have another program for him which is very interesting

When they said the drive would go to either di Resta or Ralf did they know already that Schneider was going to retire?

I'm sorry I got the tenses all mixed up, but I hope it's still comprehensible.

  • Steven Roy10/02/2009 at 18:25

I’m sorry I got the tenses all mixed up, but I hope it’s still comprehensible.

    Your tenses are fine.

A few weeks ago Mercedes announced all their drivers for the new cars with one seat still vacant. They said that seat would be di Resta's unless he had a GP" or F1 program in which case Ralf would get moved up to a new car from a two year old car.

  • Steven Roy10/02/2009 at 18:28

    GP2 not GP"

  • me10/02/2009 at 18:31

  • Steven Roy10/02/2009 at 18:37

No idea. USF1? A years testing for USF1 in a year old McLaren?

  • Kathi10/02/2009 at 19:48

If you want to drive a F1 car, come to Finland in August. It costs 'only' €1850 for 4 laps. You can drive a Renault 2004, Arrows 2003, Jordan 2002.

  • Alex Andronov10/02/2009 at 19:49

Bassano and I may have had more than one pint!

    But he still doesn't know!

    Ah-ha! It reads:

There are a few companies on quite a few coutries that let you do it. There was one that for two seasons let you drive an F1 car round Spa but then they stopped.

  • Alex Andronov10/02/2009 at 20:11

It will be only worth a pork scratching in my opinion

We made the connection to Me's secret identity, and concluded that it was better not to know some things :)

  • Bassano Clapper10/02/2009 at 20:41

So, we are thinking of extending the SidePodcast drinking club but maybe only at a member at a time, what do you say Giggles?

And as for the Elderflower Spritzer, it's a good job he stayed off the Black Sambucca Chilli Mojitos

  • Bassano Clapper10/02/2009 at 20:48

By the way, I need to say two things before I forget. And I will forget before Sunday. The first is that PETN is an explosive (and part of a thesis I had to read).

The second is that I didn't realise how bad it sounded until I said it out loud. It is genuinely referenced (mostly) on my site if you search. Perhaps the word "pub" would have been better, but like I said, I didn't realise until afterwards. Let's just say, the apostrophe is quite important.

I have made a choritzo, broccoli and courgette pasta dish and suddenly I turned to Katherine and said... "Oh no we have no cheese" she said... "Oh yeah that's right... I have some in my handbag!"

    That's my girl :)

  • Bassano Clapper10/02/2009 at 21:17

I have made a choritzo, broccoli and courgette pasta dish and suddenly I turned to Katherine and said… “Oh no we have no cheese” she said… “Oh yeah that’s right… I have some in my handbag!”

I'm more concerned that you made that it such a short time

Cheese in a handbag pales into insignificance

  • Ollie10/02/2009 at 21:17

I turned to Katherine and said… “Oh no we have no cheese” she said… “Oh yeah that’s right… I have some in my handbag!”

It's amazing what ladies keep in their handbags. Just astounding. :D

  • Alex Andronov10/02/2009 at 21:18

I am a speed chef! Takeaways have nothing on me!

(to be fair it took 15 mins)

  • Bassano Clapper10/02/2009 at 21:18

I didn’t realise until afterwards. Let’s just say, the apostrophe is quite important.

Ollie, which apostrophe are you referring to?

  • Alex Andronov10/02/2009 at 21:19

Bassano... Actually based on the reaction tonight... You could say one of the predictions we discussed has started already...

  • Bassano Clapper10/02/2009 at 21:19

(to be fair it took 15 mins)

And you didn't live comment it :D

By the way, I need to say two things before I forget. And I will forget before Sunday. The first is that PETN is an explosive (and part of a thesis I had to read).

you have got to be kidding.

The second is that I didn’t realise how bad it sounded until I said it out loud. It is genuinely referenced (mostly) on my site if you search. Perhaps the word “pub” would have been better, but like I said, I didn’t realise until afterwards. Let’s just say, the apostrophe is quite important.

    no chance.

  • Bassano Clapper10/02/2009 at 21:24

Well, I thought so but it would understandable if it were omitted from the roll call

  • Ollie10/02/2009 at 21:26

    no chance.

Is there a way of changing team names. Seriously, I really didn't notice until afterwards. I can't see a way of deleting or editing, but if you know of a way, please tell.

    ahhh, ok

It was a genuine "just add the word Inn and we're away." Didn't mean to cause a kerfuffle (although a small part of me did giggle at the thought of it being read out). If it isn't changed by tomorrow I'll contact Danny at the site.

Then do without it for the moment. It's hard to offer advice to someone who hasn't asked and probably doesn't want :P but what I've learned in life so far is that it is their problem until they specifically make it you problem (and then, it's still Steven's fault). Cheer up, concentrate on the ICT and give us a big smile. :) And you know the community is here to help with any Access queries. *shudder, Access, shudder*

Did you guys ever work out what the thing on the underside of the RB5’s nose was?

    Short version: it's a sensor.

Long version: it's a speed sensor. In fact one of these: http://www.corrsys-datron.com/Support/Data_Sheets/Datasheets-Sensors/cds-d_SFII-P-racing_e.pdf

Did you guys ever work out what the thing on the underside of the RB5’s nose was?

Some teams seem to run a laser ride height sensor there but this was a roughly tear drop shape so I guess it is being used as a flow conditioner as well.

  • Christine10/02/2009 at 23:09

You picked it, he was a slave to the live comments at the time

    I blame Steven.

haha i'm hoping my teacher will talk me through how to do it by doing it and me watching. lol or at least giving me a nice step by step guide. we haven't really been thought how to use access (only really in yr 9 which was about 3 years ago and it was basic stuff) so we've kinda get tought what we need as we go.

Good point, turn the discussion/lesson on it’s head with you realtime doohickey interactiveness

hehe that would be awesome. unfortunatly the school which runs ie6 doesn't like the doohickey, or even the main site. Only the lclt works. plus the ict technicians refused to unblock f1break the other day. i was not happy. I had nothing to do in that free and was gonna write a post. As it was i got dragged away to go help a teacher.

  • Bassano Clapper10/02/2009 at 23:20

What about ye olde comments type thing?

  • lou10/02/2009 at 23:23

What about ye olde comments type thing?

yeah i can kinda use them. but the site never has any layout/format or anything, it's just white with black writing. bit annoying. so i tend to use lclt cause it's quicker.

  • me10/02/2009 at 23:24

bit of an internal debate raging here at spc hq as to the merit of this:

    http://www.f1minute.com/category/f1-big-picture/

christine has always said, in fact insisted, that if the big picture is to sit on f1minute.com, it should be relevant to the content within the podcast. which seems fair enough.

today the the show was about testing:

    http://www.f1minute.com/2009/02/10/10-feb-09-glock-and-buemi-lead-day-1-of-testing/

so the pic should've been related. except i found a good picture of ron dennis after the podcast was done, and have been campaigning all evening to use that instead.

i finally won out, but i'm not sure the girl is at all impressed about it. anyhow, please take a look at the picture, if only so i feel it was worth the hassle.

apparantly ron's been in paris with lewis chatting about cars (what else). haven't seen it reported much elsewhere either, so, y'know stop reading this and go look... please?

Ron looks a little scary there. nice photo though.

It's an interesting picture of Ron. Very shallow depth of field - his right eye is in focus but his left is not.

  • Bassano Clapper10/02/2009 at 23:30

It depends on your criteria, I guess

For me, the big picture is relevant to the latest news

This one, is - kinda. But not to the F1M of the day. Personally I don't mind as long as the content is good

That's not to say it should be as oblique every day IMHO

    Ronspeak diverts the focus

    [good spot btw]

Long version: it’s a speed sensor. In fact one of these: http://www.corrsys-datron.com/Support/Data_Sheets/Datasheets-Sensors/cds-d_SFII-P-racing_e.pdf

    you found the actual sensor?

I agree. The choice of picture should sometimes be a bit less obvious - for example today you might expect a picture from the testing, but testing happens on multiple days. The picture of Ron is a one-off, so merits being used over testing pics.

yeah. it kinda felt mean to get you guys to gang up on the girl though.

No, I meant after the fact based on the merits of the post or supposition. How you guys react to that is how SPC evolves

ahh, yes. tis very true and the next time it comes up we can keep that in mind.

i guess christine's argument might be that she should have at least mentioned the ron story in the podcast, even if only briefly at the end.

  • Bassano Clapper10/02/2009 at 23:45

And I believe we would be (for the most part) fairly dismissive of your preferences and express our feelings when requested, not being based on 'taking sides'

    Again, see previous post

Sometimes, a picture does speak a thousand words and there is only a minute.

A relevant point though but I like Andy's comment earlier

    also v.true.

  • Bassano Clapper10/02/2009 at 23:51

No, matter. Is good that that it provokes discussion which makes it the place that it is

Must hit the sack, early bird tomorrow

    I hadn't realised DC's Museum closed in January, that's a shame.

I thought it was opening again. Seems a strange idea to close it as soon as he retires.

i'm not sure it's to do with D retiring, in fact from what i have read on the site, it looks like the lady who runs it can no longer continue to for personal reasons. So it's closed until further notice.

  • Alianora La Canta11/02/2009 at 01:15

    I hadn’t realised DC’s Museum closed in January, that’s a shame. {lou - comment #484}

It is a pity. It would have been a good place to visit. Explains why Autosport ended up getting the entire car collection for the duration of the show, but I hope someone is in a position to open the DC museum soon.

If anyone gets Aitch’s attention, can you persuade him to pin himself on the SidePodMap, please

It's been there for a few days now, Surrey BC Canada, although I'm not to keen about that pin placement.
