Today marks the third day of the tennis championships at Wimbledon, and so far it’s been brilliant! Yesterday three high seeders found themselves packing up their racquets and waving goodbye to the grandstands for the last time this year as the smiley Marcos Baghdatis [24], Juan Carlos Ferrero [14],  and most shockingly of all Fernando Verdasco [8] were all defeated.

While Amy mourns the loss of two of her favourite players we should also remember those who did well. Serena was first up on centre court and won her match in straight sets, before heading over to join her sister to play a doubles match, which they also won. Goodness me, don’t you hate talented families! Other notable victories include Nadal’s brilliant match against Nishikori, Soderling’s speedy success against Ginepri, Tsonga, and of course Andy Murray’s triumph against Hajek. Okay so Andy was expected to win, but he has a lot of pressure on his shoulders. Murray will next play on Thursday, when the Queen comes to visit – yet more pressure!

So, we’ve had a quick look at some of the big winners and losers from yesterday, now let’s move onto today’s action. First up on centre court we’ll see Andy Roddick’s match against the French Michael Llodra, followed by Ekaterina Makarova’s as she takes on the strength of the second Williams sister Venus. Last up on centre court again is Djokovic, let’s hope for another interesting game from him! The action on the other courts promises to be just as good with Federer playing on court 1 today, following matches from both Hewitt and Kim Clijsters. Other notable players today include Davydenko, Justine Henin and Jelena Jankovic, so keep an eye out for results of their games too. More information about the scheduling of the matches can be found on the Wimbledon site.

While Andy isn’t playing until Thursday his brother, Jamie Murray, will be in action today in the doubles over on court 18. It must be very lonely on court 18, and Jamie is so lovely I think we should all get behind him and support him as the player of the day. He may have a new hairstyle, but don’t judge him for it, he seems very lovely. Gooo Jamie!

It's also worth mentioning the official Wimbledon iPod/iPhone/iPad app, it's perfect for catching up on news, finding the days schedule and even getting up to date scores from the ongoing matches!

With two very exciting opening days to the tournament, I can’t wait to see how today pans out. Will there be any surprise exits? Will we be able to keep up with all the matches? Will Djokovic’s match finish before the 11pm curfew? Who knows! Don’t you just love tennis!

:) I couldn't think what the poem reminded me of until I read the comment from David in Edinburgh - Baldrick's poem from Blackadder Goes Forth!

I just found this post I wrote last year about Wimbledon: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2009/06/23/how-to-keep-up-with-wimbledon/

  • Christine23/06/2010 at 10:25

In fact, I have written a new post instead: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/06/23/our-worst-year-ever-im-still-watching/

I kind of love this haiku from the BBC text:

Wimbledon is here. Murray is our only hope. Optimistic fools

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 11:33

I also love that Tom's twitter is as flowery as his live text

"Maybe the umpire will gravely intone the score from Port Elizabeth at the changeover, with A-Rod looking baffled and Venus indifferent"

@Wimbledon: John Isner has just broken @Wimbledon ace record. Has served up 52 v Mahut. Mahut no slouch either with 42 for the match. 400 points played.

I have done as instructed and followed A-Rod.

the thing I love about Andy is when he tweets things and gets funny replies he retweets them for us all to see. I liked the reply "why is she huggling Stifler?" to the picture of him and Serena, because seriously, they're pretty much identical.

Isner match now 4 hours 48 minutes old, the same length as the 2008 final. No signs of ending yet. That 5 hour 5 minute record could go :D

Do you mean games per person, or games in total?

well either way... cause.. after this game we've got a ladies match and then another mens singles before Jamie's match. He's last up on court 18. :(

so Amy.. as you're the tennis guru you'll know the answer to this...

Do the umpires travel to different countries with the players.. or do they stay put?.

like are these the same umpires that were at R.G for example?

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 16:23

Do the umpires travel to different countries with the players.. or do they stay put?.

This is Pascal Maria. I get the impression he is the HBIC of umpires.

This is Enric Molina. I think he is my favourite, he is awesome

This is Carlos Ramos. He is so smiley.

and this is Mo Lahyani. Apparently the players really like him because he makes good calls and is very friendly so yay for Mo.

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 16:32

oops I just realised I'm not paying attention and I'm no longer watching Roger because my TV has switched to Luczak since he's Australian. Time to stream me some Rogie.

  • lou23/06/2010 at 16:37

    hehehe bbc live text -

1727: Jamie is, of course, scheduled last on Court 18 for his doubles match with Jonathan Marray. Chin up, Jamie, Isner and Mahut are 29-29 and you always get a break in the 59th game. Then it's just a ladies' singles and men's singles, and you're on!

    and..

1732: And so it goes on... 30-30 now on Court 18. They'll need to come out and cut the grass in a minute.

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 16:37

I think if I go to sleep and then get up in 4 hours when the alarm goes off, this match would still be going.

if this match ever ends, watch the handshake. John is taller than everyone in the whole world.

Actually that's not true because I don't think he's the tallest player on the tour. He just has very gangly limbs which makes him look even taller than normal.

  • lou23/06/2010 at 16:54

  • lou23/06/2010 at 17:50

What time do they have to finish by?

well all action needs to finish by 11pm, but it will finish before then because it's not centre court so light will be an issue.

  • Marilene Riddle23/06/2010 at 17:50

yep, and sometimes they play doubles together :D

  • lou23/06/2010 at 17:51

Amy! i have another question for you, if they don't finish this match tonight for some odd reason, tomorrow will the winner still have to play the other match after this one finishes? or will it be delayed another day?

  • lou23/06/2010 at 17:52

Has this been the only match for 7 hours or so?

    7hours 40mins..

  • lou23/06/2010 at 17:58

  • lou23/06/2010 at 17:59

Gaaahh, them swapping courts has confused me who is who!! I hate it when they do that :(

they haven't swapped courts.. just ends ;)

but it' easy to get confused between the two.. Mahut is the one without the hat?... he's smaller too... apparently.

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:00

oh johnny, your body language upsets me. cheer up giant man!

    :D

  • Lukeh23/06/2010 at 18:00

usually I'll just refer to one as 'the one who is winning'

but not with these two, yeeeeesh.

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:01

but not with these two, yeeeeesh.

you know you can always tell them apart from who is serving ;)

  • RG23/06/2010 at 18:04

  • RG23/06/2010 at 18:06

  • Marilene Riddle23/06/2010 at 18:06

well, they had a sleep in the middle :D

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:07

well, they had a sleep in the middle :D

    it's a ridiculous match.

  • Christine23/06/2010 at 18:08

Well, the referee's office have just informed us that Isner's doubles match with Sam Querrey due on Court 10 has been cancelled for the day.

    Yes, he's kinda busy.

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 18:08

    Yes, he's kinda busy.

    :D

  • Lukeh23/06/2010 at 18:09

They should just put a big wall of polysteryne blocks on one side of the tennis pitch all with big numbers from 1-10 on them, and each player gets 3 serves, whicver block they hit is the points they get. Whoever gets highest qualifies.

If they STILL draw, then just put them both through and have 2 vs 1 matches

  • Christine23/06/2010 at 18:10

Wow, he really is tall! It looks like he's moving slowly, but that's just cos it only takes him two steps to cross the court.

  • RG23/06/2010 at 18:10

In copying football they should have an 'Ace Shootout', get an ace you score one point, if its returned you get 0. First to five or whatever wins.

  • Marilene Riddle23/06/2010 at 18:10

    Novak wins!!! :D

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 18:10

so if roger holds serve its another tie break. and i know that he sucks at those. but i need him to win it so his match ends.

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 18:11

In copying football they should have an 'Ace Shootout', get an ace you score one point, if its returned you get 0. First to five or whatever wins.

they could go 'hey, just for this match only, lets have a 5 set tie break'

  • Lukeh23/06/2010 at 18:12

Roger isn't doing very well. What he needs is a tie break

I am so looking forward to your Wimbledon post, there will be a whole new vocabulary.

  • Steven Roy23/06/2010 at 18:15

    Note to Mr C

I have just figured out why I am having a problem with the new olde comments preview box.

If you put a url in your comment then hit tab enter to post the comment it doesn't tab to the submit comment button it tabs to the url. Then when you hit enter it opens that url. Really confused me the first couple of times

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:16

wait.. did Djokovic win his match?

  • Lukeh23/06/2010 at 18:16

I find it insane that the crouchers just stand there when the ball comes at them at 50mph or something...

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 18:16

    mini break for roger

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:16

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:17

one dived out of the way earlier... :)

  • Lukeh23/06/2010 at 18:17

I am so looking forward to your Wimbledon post, there will be a whole new vocabulary.

I will try my best to make it understandable... but I am rubbish at the terminology.

  • Lukeh23/06/2010 at 18:17

    What's a croucher?

The crouching people behind the tennis players

  • Janna23/06/2010 at 18:17

    What's a croucher?

My guess is a line judge ;)

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 18:17

    mini break is gone. baaaaaah.

  • Marilene Riddle23/06/2010 at 18:17

wait.. did Djokovic win his match?

    You missed this:

    Novak wins!!! :D

    :P

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:17

    yes

    wohooo!

  • Lukeh23/06/2010 at 18:18

My guess is a line judge ;)

See, croucher makes more sense. #tennisterms

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:18

    You missed this:

    sorry, i'm watching 2 matches... i'm no amy :(

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 18:18

dear tie break. please do be stopping with the aces.

  • Lukeh23/06/2010 at 18:19

Their average serves are over 100 mph!

  • Steven Roy23/06/2010 at 18:19

Why don't they bring out a rule that if it gets to 20:20 you are both out or do rock paper scissors

  • Janna23/06/2010 at 18:19

See, croucher makes more sense. #tennisterms

Part of the fun is in the guessing. I started off thinking it was the ball boys/girls but amended my guess on the basis of further comments.

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:19

Their average serves are over 100 mph!

you need to watch more tennis...

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:20

Why don't they bring out a rule that if it gets to 20:20 you are both out or do rock paper scissors

this is an example as to why we need tie breaks in the last set..

  • Marilene Riddle23/06/2010 at 18:20

Their average serves are over 100 mph!

you need to watch more tennis...

    heehee

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 18:20

Why don't they bring out a rule that if it gets to 20:20 you are both out or do rock paper scissors

if they were going to do that they'd just have a tie break like on all the other sets. and that's no fun!

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 18:20

match point for rog. he won't do it.

  • RG23/06/2010 at 18:20

this is an example as to why we need tie breaks in the last set..

Surely if they went tie-break it would still be something like 203-202 though?

  • Marilene Riddle23/06/2010 at 18:21

match point for rog. he won't do it.

    He does it. :D

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 18:21

oh he did it! yay Roger! Under normal circumstances I would sleep now, but I can't miss tennis history!

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:22

Surely if they went tie-break it would still be something like 203-202 though?

    erm... no...

    Amy?..

  • Christine23/06/2010 at 18:22

oh he did it! yay Roger! Under normal circumstances I would sleep now, but I can't miss tennis history!

They'll probably still be going when you wake up.

I still think rock paper scissors makes more sense

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:22

oh he did it! yay Roger! Under normal circumstances I would sleep now, but I can't miss tennis history!

    :D hehehehe yyaaay for Federer!

Amy.. you should pull a sicky tomorrow...

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 18:23

    erm... no...

probably, no one is breaking. but at least they'd only have to win two points in a row, not two games.

  • Christine23/06/2010 at 18:23

I bet Mahut wins it. Isner is all annoyed now.

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 18:23

They'll probably still be going when you wake up.

that is possible, but what if they're not? fear of missing out!

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 18:24

Amy.. you should pull a sicky tomorrow...

I can't do that after writing on facebook that I'm watching tennis :D

  • Lukeh23/06/2010 at 18:24

I bet Mahut wins it. Isner is all annoyed now.

    Which one is which?

  • Christine23/06/2010 at 18:24

I bet Mahut wins it. Isner is all annoyed now.

    Which one is which?

Isner is the freakishly tall one.

  • lou23/06/2010 at 18:25

    Which one is which?

the smaller one without a hat..

  • Steven Roy23/06/2010 at 18:25

I bet Mahut wins it. Isner is all annoyed now.

    Which one is which?

  • Christine23/06/2010 at 19:02

    Woo break points!

    I still don't get them :(

Basically, it is easier to win points when you are serving. So if you score points when you're not serving, that leads to break points, and if you keep scoring points you win that game. Then you start scoring again so you have the advantage.

  • Amy23/06/2010 at 19:02

    I don't today :(

today I bring you what wiki says:

"A break point occurs if the receiver, not the server, has a chance to win the game in the next rally. Break points are of particular importance because serving is generally advantageous. A receiver who has two (score of 15-40) or three (score of love-40) consecutive chances to win the game has double break point or triple break point, respectively. If the receiver does, in fact, win their break point, the receiver is said to have converted their break point, but if the receiver fails to win their break point it is called a failure to convert."

  • lou23/06/2010 at 19:03

    I already wrote a novel of a comment :(

    okay... i find it.

    ...

'also, a break point is when you get to 40 points on your opponents serve. It means if you win the next point you’ve “broken serve”.

If the score is 30-40 that is one break point as you only have one chance to get the point because if the server gets the point it is deuce. This is why 15-40 is said to be two break points as you have 2 chances.

If you have Advantage in a deuce off the opponents serve that is also a break point as you will win the game if you win the next point. It took me ages to understand this '

I had 335 minutes 41 minutes ago. So now it should be 376 minutes (6 hours 16 minutes).

At least the crowd can stand up when they change ends, it's the umpire that's worrying me. Not sure he'll be able to walk at the end.

don't they have a light meter thingy court side, like they have in Cricket? They have a 5 light system.

    Everyone is watching!

  • Marilene Riddle23/06/2010 at 19:44

    (hearts)

It's 56 games all and darkness is falling. This, needless to say, is not a good development, because everybody knows that zombies like the dark. So far in this match they've been comparatively puny and manageable, only eating a few of the spectators in between bashing their serves.

But come night-fall the world is their oyster. They will play on, play on, right through until dawn. Perhaps they will even leave the court during the change-overs to munch on other people. Has Roger Federer left the grounds? Perhaps they will munch on him, hounding him down as he runs for his car, disembowelling him in the parking lot and leaving Wimbledon without its reigning champion. Maybe they will even eat the trophy too.

Growing darker, darker all the while.

  • Alianora La Canta23/06/2010 at 19:45
