The first week of this year's French Open has been a battle for many of the top names. Both Williams sisters went out in the first round, whilst Federer, Murray and Djokovic have been losing sets all over the place. Azarenka also lost her match today, crashing out of the tournament. This second week looks set to provide plenty more entertainment as the field narrows and the matches get tougher. Keep an eye open for any surprises!

  • Lukeh03/06/2012 at 18:32

    tsonga finally wins a game!

  • Christine03/06/2012 at 18:36

Slightly better now, I thought he was going to give this set up for lost a minute or two ago.

  • Lukeh03/06/2012 at 18:50

    50 unforced errors each!

  • Christine03/06/2012 at 18:55

  • Lukeh03/06/2012 at 18:56

  • Christine03/06/2012 at 18:57

  • Lukeh03/06/2012 at 19:14

  • Christine03/06/2012 at 19:14

I don't think Tsonga is ever gonna break him in this game at this rate!

  • Lukeh03/06/2012 at 19:30

the momentum is right behind jo wilfred now, although surely its a matter of time before they call for bad light

  • Christine03/06/2012 at 19:36

Goodness knows what would happen if they don't get to finish.

  • Lukeh03/06/2012 at 19:36

    Listen to the boos!

  • Lukeh03/06/2012 at 19:37

    Good point!

  • Christine04/06/2012 at 09:39

Some good tennis on the cards today. Murray and Nadal in action, Sharapova and Li Na. Plus the end of the Tsonga match.

  • Christine04/06/2012 at 11:29

Wawrinka has broken back, so they are back on serve in the fifth set. Tricky for Tsonga.

  • Amy04/06/2012 at 11:39

ooh pleased i've made it in time to see the end of this match.

  • Amy04/06/2012 at 11:46

we need to introduce him to tennis warehouse's nike liquidation page

    http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/liqWANike.html

Considering I don't play tennis I've spent far too much money on this site over the years.

    She also screeches.

  • Mr C04/06/2012 at 13:04

noise i can live with. the need to line up her own feet when she remembers she has some, not so much.

  • Christine04/06/2012 at 13:06

    c'mon woman in pink!

Sharapova has the first set, soz.

  • Amy04/06/2012 at 14:48

the defending champion is very close to losing to someone who appears to be wearing safety goggles.

  • Amy04/06/2012 at 14:55

some strange returns from murray in that opening game.

  • Mr C04/06/2012 at 15:42

some strange returns from murray in that opening game.

surprised he's not on a more mainstream channel than itv4.

  • Lukeh04/06/2012 at 15:43

surprised he's not on a more mainstream channel than itv4.

itv4 doesn't even register on my freeview, thank goodness for tvcatchup.

Although that said I'm just grateful to have tennis on tv, seem to find it quite difficult to find coverage when it's not the opens

  • Lukeh04/06/2012 at 15:43

that serve was 201 k/mh, jesus!

  • Mr C04/06/2012 at 15:44

  • Mr C04/06/2012 at 15:45

    :)

  • Lukeh04/06/2012 at 15:46

also find it a bit odd that roland garros is the only open not to support hawkeye considering how accepted it is in tennis now

(compared to football especially who seem to get petrified at the thought of technology assisting it)

  • Lukeh04/06/2012 at 15:47

    best rally ever!

  • Mr C04/06/2012 at 15:50

    bad start.

  • Christine04/06/2012 at 16:02

What is Murray wearing? No wonder he's losing.

  • Christine04/06/2012 at 16:03

surprised he's not on a more mainstream channel than itv4.

I was staggered it was on ITV at all. Didn't have them pegged as a tennis channel.

  • Mr C04/06/2012 at 16:03

What is Murray wearing? No wonder he's losing.

i dunno but the other guy has a crocodile on his shirt... seems kinda childish.

  • Mr C04/06/2012 at 16:32

i must dash off but if the match is still going after the conference i shall be back :)

i can't see this one lasting long! see ya.

  • Christine04/06/2012 at 17:08

Guy just said that in the time it has taken Murray and Gasquet to get one set each, Nadal beat Monaco who is one of the better clay court players. 6-2 6-0 6-0.

Not betting against him for the title!

  • Christine04/06/2012 at 17:20

4-0 in this set for Murray so far. He's stepped it up a notch.

  • Lukeh04/06/2012 at 17:54

    hello again!

Looks like murray's back to his normal self.

  • Christine04/06/2012 at 17:57

It must be a bit weird for the other player when one of them changes his shirt. That guy was blue just now.

  • Lukeh04/06/2012 at 17:57

Was just about to ask if gasquet has changed his top

  • Christine04/06/2012 at 18:01

Was just about to ask if gasquet has changed his top

I don't know why he did, it hasn't brought him any luck.

  • Lukeh04/06/2012 at 18:03

I think andy just ran out the stadium to get that ball :)

  • Lukeh04/06/2012 at 18:04

@5livetennis agrees with what we just said: Excellent from Murray. Seemed to feed off the hostile atmosphere. After a terrible start, played some of his best tennis of the year.

Lou made a really good point to me earlier questioning if he'll pull out of Queens this year to be in tip top shape for wimbledon and the olympics. Gonna be a busy summer for his back,

  • Lukeh04/06/2012 at 18:26

I still cant believe andy made that point!

  • Christine04/06/2012 at 18:28

I'm seeing blue shirt again. Confusing man.

Oh that reminds me. I was gonna share a wonderful bit of advice I heard from John McEnroe on Grand slam Tennis 2:

"Tennis is all about winning games, set and matches."

yes it is, john, yes it is.

  • Christine04/06/2012 at 19:01

yes it is, john, yes it is.

i have never ever heard that term said by anyone. sort it out commentators :D

someone should make it a personal challenge to say as many words as applicable on that list during a match

  • guille230605/06/2012 at 14:28

i would not be surprised if mr john del potro wins that match.

It's not the first time this year he starts winning a match against the "top 4", but he needs to keep that form throughout the whole game.

He's certainly recovered his pre-injury form, he now needs to do that extra bit that took him to be the US Open champion (we now he can ;) )

  • guille230605/06/2012 at 14:29

i would not be surprised if mr john del potro wins that match.

wow, no it's 4-1 and serving...

  • Lukeh05/06/2012 at 14:36

tsonga's making a lot of unforced errors already.

  • Lukeh05/06/2012 at 14:37

  • Lukeh05/06/2012 at 15:50

    fed two sets down now.

  • Lukeh05/06/2012 at 15:53

I'm afraid I shall be disappearing for a bit to watch nintendo's e3 conference, my bandwidth cries at the idea of handling too streams :)

Hopefully the tennis will still be on afterwards!

  • Christine05/06/2012 at 16:07

Missed the first two sets of Tsonga's match but it looks like we're all even anyways.

  • Christine05/06/2012 at 16:20

    Goooooo Jo!

  • Christine05/06/2012 at 16:34

Ooh, I think that's a trainer for Tsonga.

  • Christine05/06/2012 at 16:35

Something on the middle finger, it looks like. Blister, maybe.

  • Christine05/06/2012 at 16:52

Nole landed really weird on that one, hope he's not injured.

  • guille230605/06/2012 at 16:54

6-3 7-6 for Delpo. This looks good :)

now it's even, two set each one and all to play in the fifth...

  • Christine05/06/2012 at 16:54

now it's even, two set each one and all to play in the fifth...

Did I see right that the last one was a 6-0?

  • guille230605/06/2012 at 16:55

Did I see right that the last one was a 6-0?

yeah. But I'm just following through the live-scores, don't have TV so I don't know if there is some problem with Delpo or is just that Roger is back at being Roger...

  • Mr C05/06/2012 at 17:04

    impressive!

  • Christine05/06/2012 at 17:09

The crowd will not shut up! Even Tsonga has to wave at them cos he wants to play.

  • Mr C05/06/2012 at 17:22

    annnnd breathe...

  • guille230605/06/2012 at 17:25

    Blimey!

  • guille230605/06/2012 at 17:41

Never, ever, waste a double match point against Nole. He probably won't give you a second chance...

  • Christine05/06/2012 at 17:41

Argh, Tsonga has changed his shirt.

  • Christine05/06/2012 at 17:49

D'oh, Nole has broken in the fifth. I think he'll take it from here.

  • Lukeh05/06/2012 at 17:58

    hello again!

  • Lukeh05/06/2012 at 18:00

ohhh novak. stop being so good!

  • Christine05/06/2012 at 18:01

ohhh novak. stop being so good!

I have had to switch it off! Can't stand how close Jo was!

  • Lukeh05/06/2012 at 18:08

    poor tsonga (

  • Amy05/06/2012 at 23:21

    two close matches it seems!

It'd be nice for Roger to beat Nole in the semis again like last year but either way, the trophy is pretty much Rafas. Engrave it now.

  • Amy06/06/2012 at 13:27

maria sharapova is still making it look easy.

there were no tennis questions at our quiz night :( but we got a golf question right thanks to tennis :D

  • Amy06/06/2012 at 14:35

I am actually offended on Jenson's behalf that Tabitha Valls thinks he looks like Andy Murray

  • Amy06/06/2012 at 14:47

oh almagro, why are you so pants at tie breaks :(

  • Amy06/06/2012 at 15:44

  • Amy06/06/2012 at 16:34

    well that went fast.

    now come on ferrer!

  • Christine06/06/2012 at 18:50

I'm impressed Andy got as far as he did. He hasn't looked tip top.

  • Christine07/06/2012 at 12:29

    Boo, rain delays.

  • Amy07/06/2012 at 12:50

    Boo, rain delays.

I've been put in charge of ringing my friend to wake her up when Maria's match starts so I hope they start playing soon, otherwise I'll fall asleep myself!

  • Amy07/06/2012 at 12:57

Roland Garros says "What is your most memorable Grand Slam wet weather moment? Tweet us with tag #RGrain"

Kait replies "when the australian open... Oh no wait. They have a roof. Two, even."

she gets very fired up about roofs.

  • Amy07/06/2012 at 15:25

    errani is emotional

  • Christine09/06/2012 at 10:56

Totally lost track of the tennis over the last couple of days. Who do we have in the finals?

Nadal, Djokovic. Makes sense, Nadal for the win.

Sharapova, someone I never heard of. Maria for the win.

  • Mr C09/06/2012 at 13:41

was watching ITV4 as usual, but no, the women's final is on ITV1. doh!!!

  • Christine09/06/2012 at 13:41

was watching ITV4 as usual, but no, the women's final is on ITV1. doh!!!

We missed almost a whole set!

  • Christine09/06/2012 at 14:11

I don't know who this woman is or how she got to the final, but she's not troubling Sharapova at all.

If the Williams sisters aren't going to be any good anymore, who is left to challenge Maria?

  • Mr C09/06/2012 at 14:43

If the Williams sisters aren't going to be any good anymore, who is left to challenge Maria?

    over before it began.

  • Christine09/06/2012 at 15:04

Sharapova spoke a bit of French in her thank you. I like that.

  • Mr C09/06/2012 at 15:07

Sharapova spoke a bit of French in her thank you. I like that.

she still walks weird. but fine, that's impressive.

  • Amy09/06/2012 at 15:35

  • Christine10/06/2012 at 09:54

@5livetennis is getting a bit miffed that they don't start play early because apparently it is going to rain this afternoon. And tomorrow. And the next day.

  • Amy10/06/2012 at 12:55

  • Amy10/06/2012 at 13:11

with these two playing this match could take about 12 hours

  • Christine10/06/2012 at 13:16

with these two playing this match could take about 12 hours

I'd vaguely considered breaking out the FBFB, because it almost fits with F1, but with the potential for rain and delays, I decided against it!

  • Amy10/06/2012 at 13:17

I'd vaguely considered breaking out the FBFB, because it almost fits with F1, but with the potential for rain and delays, I decided against it!

probably a wise decision. plus theres always wimbledon in a few weeks time :D

  • Amy10/06/2012 at 13:27

It's not exactly a bad thing. (Except if you are needing to sleep!)

all this weirdly timed tennis and f1 would be fine if i actually got to take a public holiday on our public holiday tomorrow :D

but my office will be quiet so maybe i can sleep under my desk.

  • Christine10/06/2012 at 13:48

Novak picked things up a bit now, but still a break down.

  • Amy10/06/2012 at 13:54

  • Mr C10/06/2012 at 15:16

but its the middle of the niiiiiight ;)

  • Amy10/06/2012 at 15:18

well its fine at the moment so hopefully they get a move on :D

they'll have a roof by 2016. wooo, forever away.

hehehe they're all most as good at planning in advance as you Amy :)

  • Amy11/06/2012 at 11:40

they'll have a roof by 2016. wooo, forever away.

although the story i just read says

"Court Philippe Chatrier will be renovated as part of £275m euro (£239.9m) renovation plans."

Well done BBC, that makes absolute sense. £275m euro indeed.

  • Amy11/06/2012 at 11:40

i saw there werent so many big names going this year. They've upped the prices since last year too, which makes me sad. Depending on the weather forecast i may go for wednesday but my tennis buddy is on holiday and i dont fancy sitting in the rain alone. Hoping the final is called off until the monday again :)

  • Amy11/06/2012 at 11:43

    "save the balls!" says Rafa.

i see that due to the forecast today they've moved the start of play forward. thats smart.

  • lou11/06/2012 at 11:45

noooo! smart Queens people means less chance for discount tickets :(

  • Amy11/06/2012 at 11:45

if novak is smart he will bounce that ball a million times and get it as wet as he can :D

  • Amy11/06/2012 at 11:46

    double the unforced errors, ouch.

  • lou11/06/2012 at 11:47

Novak seems in a much better mood today.

  • Amy11/06/2012 at 11:48

  • lou11/06/2012 at 12:03

  • Christine11/06/2012 at 12:03

    What happened, what happened?

  • Amy11/06/2012 at 12:04

i bet they engrave his name on the trophy before they even start these days.

he makes the french open so boring :(

  • Amy11/06/2012 at 12:04

  • lou11/06/2012 at 12:05

he makes the french open so boring :(

:( at least he's happy about it. I can't stand when people win something and don't even smile. Novak must be sad tho, what a way to loose it :(

    time for the alonso song

i turned over for a bit of Queens and it's still raining, and doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon so BBC have put some stupid housing programe on. Time to get some work done then.

  • Amy11/06/2012 at 12:17

Rafas french a bit more wonky, he had to go into English to finish what he was trying to say.

I give him a C for that, learning it when you know Spanish must be easier than learning when you know Serbian.

  • lou11/06/2012 at 12:18

Rafas french a bit more wonky, he had to go into English to finish what he was trying to say.

aww bless him! if it was me it would all be in English.

  • Amy11/06/2012 at 12:19

  • Amy11/06/2012 at 12:23

first delayed final in 39 years. i guess i can forgive them, thats much better than the annual occurance at the US OPen.
