Week 8 presents us with a quadruple-header of NFL action. The TNF game saw the Broncos powering through to beat the Chargers. In the early slot the Detroit Lions are playing the Falcons from Wembley (13:30 Sun – C4). This will kick off at 0930 of the East Coast of the States, and 0630 on the West – one for the die-hards on that side of the pond. Next an AFC North divisional matchup when the Baltimore Ravens play at the Cincinnati Bengals (17:00 Sun – Sky Sports). After that we have a battle of the 5-1 birdies; the Philadelphia Eagles play the Arizona Cardinals (20:25 Sun – Sky Sports) – a win will keep that team atop of the NFC. The late night offering pitches the Green Bay Packers against the New Orleans Saints (00:30 Mon – C4). The Saints have been slumping despite the talent on their roster, whereas the Packers are getting stronger with every game – likely ‘shootout o’clock’! Beware the time changes and the early start… lunchtime NFL everybody!!
NFL Week 8
Published by Will Davies on
Afternoon NFL fans... A mere 40minutes till kick off!
Who on earth are these awful singers?
little mix - I had it on mute
I'd also completely forgotten America doesn't change its own clocks this week. Explains why this game is 13.30 and not 14.30 as I'd expected...
I know there is a week difference, purely because of the NFL
I'm watching this on C4, but the coverage doesn't seem great so far. If it annoys me enough, I'll just switch to Gamepass.
I've managed to wrestle the TV, so I get a whole screen, rather than a 1/4 of a laptop :)
Here. We. Go!
Virgin box just decided to reboot *face palm*
TD Falcons!
Good start. Shame I have the Lions to win.
Likewise - although no Bush or Megatron will make things harder!
Dan from our Fantasy league is on the ground: https://twitter.com/danoftheavenue/status/526322504374435840
No Bush? Oh. Yeah. I'd change my pick with that knowledge!
I'll be at the third game.
'Boys at Jags - should be something special given how Dallas have started
3 TEs out as well, why did I pick the Lions again? ;) Ohh yeah, the defence
Nice return
TD Falcons""
That was a great fake. Tricked me too.
fumble
recovered
Bell definitely didn't want that ball.
Not at all - could see the brick wall in front of him
What were they saying about a viable franchise on London? I missed the start of it.
Something about timezones... he didn't seem too happy with having to work at 9am
That Falcon had has hands all over him for the whole route
Of all the reasons an NFL franchise would be difficult in London, that's really not a good one.
That's a very selfish reason not to expand the sport that pays his bills...
Wasn't that out of bounds?
For a start, games wouldn't need to be at this time. They could have them in the normal early slot, or maybe an hour before. Secondly, what does he think businesses travellers between the UK and the U.S. have to do when they travel?!
It was - just didn't hear it called as such
Lions defence looks to be getting weaker - Fairly is being helped off the field - knee bent painfully on collision with Suh
The comms called it in as we watched the side judge clearly signal it OOB.
Some return, that.
That's got to be offensive PI.
I don't like how those fouls offset. The offensive foul shouldn't count there.
*defensive
Amazing return, that he'd already got a flag for
(Stuck under a cat, shifted to mobile commenting)
DET 0-21 ATL at the half
C4 have the Man vs Food guy!
I'm in and out of comments at the moment. I may be more consistent for the next games. But I am around.
What was Marshall Faulk saying?
Joey Barton claims to be an NFL fan... Doesn't seem that way from what he's saying. Struggled just to name the teams.
Sorry, wasn't in the room at that point
He's just a face with a sideline pass
Again the commentators are rubbishing the surface - I think they're part of the NO campaign.
Good pocket presence from Stafford - kept that play alive for an absolute age - nothing came of the throw though
TD Lions - HUUUUGE bomb to Tate
Yep, completely vacant.
Lions looked to have forced ATL to punt, but an illegal contact penalty gifts the Falcons a 1st.
FUMBLE
The 1 Falcon under the pile comes out with the ball
Interception!
Apauling INT from Ryan - straight to the Lion, no Falcon even close.
Lions now at the 7
Even if Tate had caught that, it wasn't going anywhere.
That was an incredible catch
It was!
Not often you see a kneel, then a spike.
Delay of game means it's over, right?
Delay of game on a last second field goal???
Doesn't it mean a 10-second run off? Also, bad snap.
Where did the 4 seconds come from?
The clock was stopped after the spike.
The clock was at 4 seconds when the play cock ran out
gam clock not play clock
Did I say, I had the Lions down to win?!
What a way to win after being behind for the whole game. Would have been incredible to have lost because they didn't get the play off on time
It wasn't a ten second runoff because the clock was stopped. I got confused. Rules inside two minutes do get complicated sometimes.
I think the rules must be written by the same people who complicate F1 rules
Had to run out, but caught the final drive - good comeback!!
Right, I'm on to Redzone now, will switch to a couple of games once it settles down. Probably Seattle and New England.
Bills lead, TD.
Titans lead, FG.
Patriots lead, TD. GRONK.
Cincinnati look more convincing in 5 minutes than in the whole match last week
Panthers lead 3-0.
Rams also lead.
Jets, down by 7, just got intercepted whilst targeting Percy Harvin.
Geno Smith got picked off again.
Ravens failed on 4th and goal.
Chaotic child, but I think I'm now following the action...
Geno Smith threw another pick.
Patriots fail on 4th and goal.
Fortunately for them, they're saved by a false start. They'll kick it.
Bills TD.
Pats FG. 10-0.
Good day to have the Bills' D
The last one was 1 yard from a pick 6.
Michael Vick ready to go!
awww man!
Jags chucked a pick 6.
That's not promising.
Chiefs TD. Charles.
1st quarter at Gillette – Brady: 1 incomplete. Cutler: 1 complete.
unprepared Geno, unprepared Vick...
Ivory TD.
Patriots just can't seem to get past the 1.
That's not Gronk!
Yeah, but you should be glad. The more they get the ball to Tim Wright, the more open Gronk will become.
Sammy Watkins just caught a pass for 84 yards. Tackled as he celebrates his "touchdown".
Jets have a wide receiver at DB.
rookie mistake
excellent, please say it's Harvin
I guess he thought he could beat DB. Trouble is, he wasn't racing a DB/ He was racing a wide receiver.
No, it's Saakim Hakim.
Bills TD.
TD Beras. Forte.
*Bears
Cheers, missed that
Gronk just passed 100 yards.
he is getting most of the targets on this drive it seems
Him and LaFell are getting a lot of work. Edelman has a drop on this drive.
Wilson picked off pretty much in the endzone.
TD GRONK.
Pats TD GRONK
It's coming back, for me.
It stood.
Rex Ryan's angry with the refs, probably because Vick fumbled the ball and lost it.
Gronk is carrying me this week
That sounded like a great return
Td pats
LaFell. That's his seventh reception today too.
And it's not even ht yet!....
Pats score!
Eh?!
Rob N fumble recovery
Comms are picking Vick;s reads apart.
Could we expect some Jimmy G time late in the game?
I'd think so.
Ivory TD.
Knile Davis kickoff return for a TD.
Revis int at the half
Flacco picked off.
Sanu is killing the Ravens' D.
Jets are 7 behind at the half.
Vikings and Buccs looking like a hard watch at the moment.
Texans TD. Foster.
fixed
I thought that's what I had written!
Vikings TD. Jennings.
Jags chuck another pick 6.
Who are they playing?
Dolphins. They are the only TDs in that game today.
Ahh yes
Gronk!
GRONK TD
My fantasy team have scored no points for about 90 minutes now.
My fantasy matchup could create a record for lowest combined score, the way it's going.
ouch - I have Gronk going off, but then Russell Wilson is on <5pts
lol - still a long time to go...
Gronk's in the locker room.
Done for the day? (not an injury?)
I'll find out.
Medical.
"@Patriots: Update from the Patriots bench: Rob Gronkowski left the game due to dehydration. His return is questionable. #CHIvsNE"...hmmmmmm
Texans TD. Foster again.
Harvin returns a kickoff to the 3. As in, the Jets' 3.
Percy Hahahavin
Bears pull a TD+2 back
Brady finally got his high 5! http://t.co/gRDEeg6lQN

Ravens lead! (if XP is good)
Seattle and Carolina have only 5 FGs between them.
Vick throws an interception to add to his two fumbles
TD Seahawks, inside two minutes.
Russell Wilson finally finds his form, TD Hawks
Sanu killing the Ravens again,
AJ Who?
I thought they were going to lose again. Before the season started I expected them to cruise through this season
Cam Newton gets flattened again. 4th and 25 now
Lots of little subtractons here and there seems to be taking their tole
TD Bengals.
Big turnaround from last week
Ravens score the game winning TD then get done for pass interference
Ouch.
That's two game-winning/losing plays wiped out this week.
Sorry. It was the Vikings not the Ravens. Ravens are stuggling to get out of their own red zone
Vikings going for a FG with 3 seconds on the clock to tie the game
No, it was the Ravens.
I am watching Red Zone and they keep jumping from match to match. Very confusing
Haha. It's still easier to follow than quad box!
They had a triple box on a few minutes ago
OVERTIME IN TAMPA!
Vikings win after forcing a fumble and running it back for a TD.
Yup, that will do it
Why do you need the extra point in overtime?
erm...
Points difference to break a tie for a play off place??????????
But you're no longer in regulation, so I don't see why that's necessary.
It doesn't seem to make any sense but that was the only thing I could come up with
...because that's what always happens after a TD.
but not in overtime – usually, anyway!
*shrugs* :)
Steelers wearing hooped shirts from 1934
Bumble bees again?
Wasp kit is back.
Colts-Steelers is my game for this slot
Same for me, I think. Though I'll stick with Redzone too.
Colts in the redzone.
I may squeeze that into the bottom corner of my screen if things get interesting
I am not suprised the Cardinals couldn't defend that. I was sure an entirely different player had the ball
MASSIVE FAIL of a play from the Raiders on 4th down.
FG fake, do to pass formation, muff the snap, throw a pick and allow a big return.
Schaub was on as the holder?! And then threw the pick - Hahahahahaha...
1 word: Raiders
He's fallen a lot in a year.
On the season: 1 throw, 1 INT - painful reading
Touchdown Bees
Wind blew the Steelers' kickoff off it's tee
From Twitter: Quote of the day by a Raiders fan after fake field goal: "This is why people make fun of us."
Those stripes make Big Ben look thinner, but also even taller
Foster scored 35 points today.
Holey Fantasy Football Batman
Cleveland 6-0. That should be enough.
May as well not come out for the second quarter
Steelers score another TD
Steeler D with a TD
Philly-Arizona is immense.
I have the second-lowest Fantasy score of everyone this week, yet, I'm winning.
Steelers with another huge score!
Can't believe how badly the Colts are losing
Gronk confirmed at the presser that he did get dehydrated today.
TD for T Y
It makes me sad to see Thompkins making catches for Oakland
Roethlisberger just did the worst punt in history. Looked like he had never kicked a ball before
Whereas when Brady does it, they are very nice
Colts need to go 70 plus yards in 28 seconds. Now 25 yards in 20s
Brady's punts are legendary.
Colts in 2 plays have gone over 60 yards. 1st and goal from the 9. 12s to go and no time outs
I wanted Larry Fitzgerald in my team this week, but i had no space for him :-(
That 1 play = 14pts
Kelce - there's your space
But he had a matchup against the Rams.
But yes, it was between the two of them.
I always think that unless you have 2 super-studs, that playing a TE in a flex (unless forced) is a risk
...looks like you have it covered though
Wait, that's only half time?!
Larry's a risk though. He's hardly featured all year. I'm just stopping anyone else from having him :-)
Vikings win. I forgot that game was still going on
I find similar with VJax - he has good matchups and I still bench him... then he goes on and gets nothing. I'd like him to get traded by Tuesday ;)
Heh, it's not. It finished about an hour and a half ago :-)
Their defence scored the TD and no sign of the PAT
Perhaps they came to their senses and left it at 19-13 then.
I missed the end of it and it just appeared on screen. Red Zone s confusing
I have the same problem with Steven Jackson.
They did
Ohh yes, he's not very productive either - although last year I managed to get Dan to take him off my hands for DThomas - I mean what?!
And that's my problem. My three most inconsistent performers are Jackson, Fitzgerald and Watkins (but Watkins is a rookie, so that's not unexpected). They're the three highest scorers for me this week. But next week, they might score 5 points between them.
Roethlisberger is on target for a 600 yard passing game. Even the pre-NFL record is only 554
That is ridiculous!
Remember when the Steelers were a running team, "because that's how proper NFL teams play"?
Something along the lines of "strong D, run the ball, that is the AFC North way"
Ground and pound
Exactly that.
Another Steelers TD? I've lost count
Eagles player ran off the pitch and failed to stop before he body surfed through the Gatorade table. Gatorade everywhere
i need a gif of that!
No doubt there will be one soon
Your wish: https://vine.co/v/OMBU0VhTIYt
hahahahahahaaaaaaqaa!!
*hugs*
Can't stop watching!
It's amazing that doesn't happen more often
Fantastic pass to give Eagles the lead
Another fun NFL Vine: https://vine.co/v/Ohlx1PiieqL
madness!!
When I saw the Jets I thought you'd given up the Butt Fumble :D
I was just about to post that. Some players refuse to believe a play is ever over
Raiders got a first down. Thankfully, then they fumbled it.
If the Browns lose today, they'll be the first ever NFL team to lose consecutive games against 0-6 teams.
How long till Johnny Football is under centre for the Browns?
Err, they're only up by 3. Any other team apart from Tampa would be safe, but I think they need at least a couple more.
Browns on the 1. Get Johnny Football out.
Colts come away with the INT I believe
Browns TD. Game over.
...I mean tha Hoyer is obviously not lighting it up
His numbers are respectable though. So are Carr's on the other side.
Carr is a competent rookie
He's looking a lot better than his brother, who always suffered from being stuck in an expansion team.
This one is able to throw the ball away when nothing is on - which is a skill that Stafford has only gotten close to mastering this season.
TY Hilton racking up yards - I've just remembered that Wayne is out - that may be the reason
IND 22pts down and still going for the comeback
Bradshaw TD for IND
Great TD run by Bradshaw for the Colts. Looked like he was going to be stuck behind his own linemen then found a gap and disappeared
@C4NFL: Six straight games with 300 yards passing for Luck. Beating the Colts' record held by some bloke called Peyton.
FUMBLE - was he down though?
IND ball
Are you both watching a stream?
Darrius Heyward Bey with the fumble - enough said
Foles picked off.
I am - are we ahead or behind?
I've no idea. I'm on redzone, and all I'm getting is Arizona-Philly!
3rd 3:21 - where are you?
Yeah, I've just the Colts game on
3rd 2:40
TD Colts
EXTpt kicked...
...NOW!
TD Colts.
So I'm about a minute behind.
I'll make sure I slow my typing down and concentrate on spelling :)
When we switch to my site, I'm going to implement time controls, I think.
Oooo, sounds complicated
I'll try to include an offset for people like me who always end up behind.
I'm watching Sky
4 weeks! :)
Haha - counting down ;) Am I right in thinking the NFL will be the final comments on the site?
If you use websockets like on here, you can't do it, I don't think. Not without a lot of trickery. If you use (more inefficient) polling, it's dead easy. You just give the user the opportunity to set an offset in seconds.
I usually do a bit of work on it each week while I watch the NFL :-)
Because it's really just for our amusement, I can't justify very much time to spend on it, but it will work :-)
Doesn't have to be all singing and dancing, just functional :)
What is your current situation with half-screen mode? IIRC with Eurovision, the text entry was at the bottom, but the new comments appeared at the top (or vice versa)
it'll be awesome.
Yep, I'm building it from scratch again, but it's got everything apart from the ability to actually comment at the moment :-)
...because it'll be someone else's living room for a change? ;)
Haha - so it's in preseason mode?
@AroundTheNFL: Big Ben needs 109 yards in the fourth quarter to break Norm Van Brocklin's (554) single-game record.
it'll be like the pub got refurbished :)
Yeah, I did that because I wanted the most recent comments at the top, but it presents a number of other issues, so I'll probably stick with the traditional top-to-bottom, and have the comments form at the bottom too.
Cool, that's perfect for me - I only ever comment in half screen mode, with the football in the other half
"Somebody's turned it into a trendy wine-bar"
Well when you try it out, let me know how it works for you. Happy to change things around if it helps.
Probably more IKEA-style minimalism.
I think that is my only 'requirement', that I consciously know of.
Gotaha: Lots of neutrals, with a dash of blue and yellow here and there.
More like, "there's a few nuts and bolts missing" :-)
but some extras of other pieces thrown in there for good measure
fumble?....
IND ball
Funny seeing bees swarm over a football.
I tell you what would be useful with respect to delayed comments - the ability to select your delay, then easily turn it off and on. So we can have these conversations around the action, then those in fron can send their "TD" comments to appear in 40s time.
But then again I don't know how easy it is to do anything web-design based ;)
That didn't go so well for the Colts...
Everyone could comment as normal, but you'd set the delay before you'd see comments, so if you're 1 minute behind, you set the offset to 60 seconds. If I can make it work like that easily.
If that is the easiest way to do it, then that ;)
Andrew Luck was always going to struggle to argue that one.
He had no chsnce of making a case
Outrageous TD pass and catch for Arizona
What do they need to review?
There is nothing to review.
Nothing I can see. It's an automatic review
Yes, but they only announce the review when there's something to properly look at. Otherwise, it's a quick glance and continue.
TD Steelers
Foles threw a last second pass for the winning TD. It was caught but the receiver didn't get a foot down in the end zone
Cards win to remain top of the NFC
San Fran should be worried, I think.
Luck picked off.
Big Ben can go for the record if they really want...
Ben needs 25ish yards for the record
Go on then, what was his qbr?
150.6
His yards/attempt stopped him getting a perfect rating.
You need 12.5 yards/attempt for a perfect metric, he only had 10.65.
He just beat Brady (148.3).
Right, I'm off. Work tomorrow.
I think I'd fallen asleep before you came up with the answer
Pff. It's not like I was slow either!
Not at all, I was tired so ended up just listening to the last few plays in bed.
