After an action-packed first weekend, we should expect nothing less from the second. First up we see the Carolina Panthers hosting the New Orleans Saints (1800 – Sky Sports) – can the interim to the interim head-coach of the Saints get a handle on nuances of running an offence? Then (2105 – Sky Sports) Washington Redskins at the St Louis Rams – will rookie QB RG3 start 2-0? Finally for the Sunday, we have the San Francisco 49ers playing the Detroit Lions (0120 – C4) – can Calvin Johnson overcome the ‘Madden-Curse’? Our last game of the weekend is on Monday night / Tuesday morning, and sees Atlanta Falcons against the Denver Broncos (0130 BBC (red-button / online) – if you want to watch Peyton Manning to turn gridiron into a game of chess, then this is the game for you.

Thanks to Will for the post. Means I really didn't forget to write one. Phew

    Game has kicked off

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 17:07

Saints are tearing the Panthers defence apart

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 17:09

    TD Saints. Way too easy

  • Noelinho16/09/2012 at 17:13

I'm in for the first hour of game one, and back an hour into the second game :-)

No worries. Unfortunately guests means that this game is out (but I can sit in the comments). I'm around properly for the next though.

okay, i'm here. yesterday's indycar has put me behind on coding, so nfl following is a bit constrained this weekend.

  • Noelinho16/09/2012 at 17:17

    No problem :-)

Lucky for you there are even more breaks in NFL than in IndyCar. Even with Sato driving.

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 17:17

I'm 'watching' via the play-by-play on the NFL app.

  • Mark16/09/2012 at 17:17

Oh, and, er, any streams going?

Fortunately I fell asleep soon after Will Power trashed his car and his championship chances

First Row Sports is your friend, though I'm on Sky Go.

There's an NFL app that works in Britain?

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 17:19

There's an NFL app that works in Britain?

yeah. 2 minute preview for free then you have to pay. 1 sec.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 17:19

I hope the Panthers offence is better than their defence because they just crumbled in the opening drive

NFL Game Pass lets fans living outside the United States watch live NFL games online. And now, with the NFL Game Pass app, you can see all the action on your favorite iOS device. Coaches Film with new Telestrator feature (iPad only), Condensed Games, Big Play Markers, scores, schedules, stats, and full play-by-play analysis are all available for live and on-demand games.

found it this week, am gonna give it a go.

  • Noelinho16/09/2012 at 17:22

Oh yeah, I know about that. There's one from last year that is now only available in the US :-(

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 17:22

    Touchdown Panthers

  • Mark16/09/2012 at 17:22

The Saints messed that up massively.

  • Noelinho16/09/2012 at 17:22

Guess I'll see that soon then...

is it any good? can airplay it to the telly, but £17.49 is pricey.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 17:24

    Game Center for this game

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 17:29

Looks like the Saints offence is quickly going to make up for giving away a touchdown

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 17:29

did you pay for a week or a season?

it's a free app, and only tells me what plays have been run - it's all text

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 17:30

ahh okay. am too busy to appreciate the paid one, but reckon i'll give it a shot for week 3.

Essentially GameCentre for your phone - hence 'watching'

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 17:34

ahh, interesting. saint vs. panthers is blocked in the uk. presumably because sky have the rights. so the app is perfect for everything except live commenting on sidepodcast :)

    First quarter over already

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 17:44

Doesn't your job have normal hours or something?

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 17:55

Another three points for the Saints. I am not hooked by this game. Switching between it and the Yankees game is not helping

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 17:57

Live broadcasts are blocked from GamePass, but they are available to watch in-app later in the week.

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 17:57

Doesn't your job have normal hours or something?

depends. this week, i have stuff to get done by monday lunchtime, and so long as it's done, it doesn't matter when.

meant to work all last night to keep today free, but then indycar happened. if i could master multitasking, i could do it all ;)

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 17:57

makes sense i guess. think i'll still try it next weekend though.

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 18:02

Yeah, I just use Sky Go, but if I had more money, GamePass is good value for money over the season. Doesn't include Playoffs though :-(

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 18:04

    FIGHT

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 18:04

Oh and a TD for the Panthers

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 18:05

does the £139.99 package? otherwise, what's plus about it?

  • Noelinho16/09/2012 at 18:13

Not sure. Certainly hasn't included it in the past. But a couple of weeks ago, it was cheaper, so maybe the late rights deals have changed things.

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 18:14

will have a play when i get chance. it's damn pricey, but a week wouldn't hurt ;)

  • Noelinho16/09/2012 at 18:15

Pricey, yes, but potentially 50p per game if you have enough time to watch everything!

  • Noelinho16/09/2012 at 18:16

Which is about 15p per hour of action!

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 18:16

Hi guys. I can't get this game at home without buying it, so I'm streaming it. Thanks for the links.

It has been a weird game. Saints strolled through the opening drive for a TD. Next time they got the ball inside their own ten Brees threw the ball straight to Pathers for them to get a TD.

Can't believe the Panthers are winning

Is this just generalized aggression? Why do they hate each other so much? Is there some particular rivalry I've missed?

I have no idea why but they already had one fight that fizzled out quickly but it just seems like there is sme kind of niggle involved

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 18:25

I have heard of a game of two halves but that was a half of two halves. Saints looked like they would dominate but finish the half 8 points down

  • Noelinho16/09/2012 at 18:45

  • Noelinho16/09/2012 at 18:49

Mr C, the plus subscription gives you offseason access to regular season games, no play offs games, though. I just double checked :-)

Panthers are just cutting through the Saints

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 18:54

    Nor me

me neither. I never realized how much I like the regional games, the easy to access, see how the local boys are doing games. It's so weird for me to stream an NFL game. Never done it before.

    13-28

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 19:09

Brees getting no protection and gets done for intentional grounding. 10 yard penalty and 4th down.

    Things can only get better

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 19:13

    ow.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 19:14

Great play by Carolina. In real trouble on their own 5 and with one play they make nearly 35 yards

Or a good time if you see a wall of Saints between you and where you want to go. :)

    Bye Mr C

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 19:21

I'm having my first cup of more traditional/non-herbal tea in a verrrry long time. I went with Rooibos with coconut milk and stevia to sweeten it. It's SO good. (coconut milk is made from coconuts, obviously, but doesn't taste like them. It's more like regular milk)

Coconut milk is made from coconuts. Really? Never would have figured that out.

I don't think I have ever tasted it. I have only ever seen it as it spilled on the ground when someone cut a coconut open

Cool, well I'm not going to catch any of the rest of the game, sadly. Hoping the Patriots get through the Arizona D in the second half too!

    Not going well

    19-9 down

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 19:33

How do you go from losing ten yards to almost gaining ten in the one play?

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 19:34

I guess it is a lot harder to milk a cocnut though. Especially in New England

Just getting them down from the palm trees is hard enough. That and finding palm trees.

But I went on a little excursion in Branford, CT a month or so ago and some fancy home owners in the Thimble Islands in CT have imported palm trees and planted them on their estates. Palm trees in Connecticut!

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 19:34

Love to see a QB ploughing through everyone for the TD

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 19:36

I can't imagine they are native. People say it is beacause of the Gulf Stream.

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 19:36

    I love that, too.

48 yard run by the Saints. They go 15 points down then respond with that

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 19:46

    ALMOST got it from Brees.

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 19:49

    <5 mins remaining?

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 19:49

Cool - I'm finding a stream, and just flicking down the play-by-play

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 19:53

I have it at 3:25 (all this time later)

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 19:53

Been thinking about it and this has to be the only game I have seen where a Qb had a ball stripped, picked it off the ground and threw a pass

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 19:53

Been thinking about it and this has to be the only game I have seen where a Qb had a ball stripped, picked it off the ground and threw a pass

I shall enjoy that on the highlights :)

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 19:54

Is it any wonder we have trouble with time zones

I can't remember seeing that before, either.

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 19:56

I can't remember seeing that before, either.

You'd think they'd be happy to recover the fumble.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 19:56

Brees throwing the ball aways to stop the clock before the two minite warning

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 19:57

Brees throwing the ball aways to stop the clock before the two minite warning

I seem now to be up to date then

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 19:57

You'd think they'd be happy to recover the fumble.

Normal practice would be to dive on the ball but to just casually pick it up and complete a pass. i don't know what to say about that

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 19:57

You'd think they'd be happy to recover the fumble.

    Yeah, Brees wasn't having it.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 19:58

Brees throwing the ball aways to stop the clock before the two minite warning

Two mistakes in one comment. Time to do more typing tests I think.

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 19:58

Normal practice would be to dive on the ball but to just casually pick it up and complete a pass. i don't know what to say about that

"oops. Wait, let me try that again." *throws ball*

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 19:58

    TD Saints

    Too little to late?

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 20:00

    Or maybe TD

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 20:02

Both offenses over 450 yards? wow.

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:02

    ... scoring review ...

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:03

    It is a TD....eventually

I'd like to see a better [read wider] camera angle.

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:04

I do love it how they describe that as a "1 yard TD-run"

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 20:04

I do love it how they describe that as a "1 yard TD-run"

    "leap" is more like it.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 20:04

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:05

    Ooooo-onside

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:06

Do they need to convert a 1st in order to run the clock down?

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 20:06

Sky trying to show two games at the same time. Their second game Redskins at Rams just kicked off

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 20:07

Do they need to convert a 1st in order to run the clock down?

    Yes because of timeouts

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 20:08

    For Noelinho

2 minutes to go in that game

    Cards' ball.

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:10

    Was that a pick?!

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 20:11

Can't believe Brees threw an interception with 30 seconds to save the game

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:11

Wow - I was expecting a HUGE drive for the score from Brees there

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 20:12

    Panthers win 35-27

    I bet no-one expected that

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 20:12

Wow. Seems a perfect ending to such back and forth game.

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:12

    So Sophmore-Slump there by Cam

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 20:12

Wow - I was expecting a HUGE drive for the score from Brees there

Me too. You have to take some risks in that situation but that one was very risky

These games a far better than I would've imagined - so many big stories

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:17

Hang on you write a post then switch horses mid stream

  • Kai16/09/2012 at 20:19

I'm watching the Giants beat Tampa Bay. They were tied with 1:24 to go, then a big run by Nicks and the Giants scored.

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:20

Hang on you write a post then switch horses mid stream

Haha - I was writing up the games for best viewing ;) But as I'm stream-hunting anyway, I'll watch San Diego.

Ohh no. The Chargers ran the WildCat :(

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:32

Come-on Norv - let Rivers make the plays!!

Should've stood. Didn't. TD on 3rd down instead

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:42

    Woah - Ravens lost... !!

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 20:53

    That'll be 2nd Chargers TD!

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 21:04

    Right, I'm back

    Hi there.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 21:12

I am half watching the Redskins-Rams game. The players are spoiling for a fight and the crowd are not at all happy.

I am not going to be around much for the next half hour to an hour though

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 21:19

Long, long TD pass by RG3 but I doubt I could watch a whole game with commentators constantly calling him Griffin the third. Every single time they say his name. His name is Griffin not Griffin the third

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 21:21

His name is Griffin not Griffin the third

They probably think he is triple-barrelled: Griffin-The-Third

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 21:21

He even has Griffin III on his shirt

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 21:22

He even has Griffin III on his shirt

He should wear number 3, or even III

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 21:22

Or better yet have Griffin, the number 3, and a little "rd" as a superscript

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 22:29

Redskins just intercepted Bradford in the ebdzone.

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 22:32

Would have retaken the lead with a TD there too.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 22:32

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 22:33

And Richardson ran for about 50 yards just a minute before! Waste opportunity.

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 22:35

Redskins blocked the punt from the 14 yard line. 1st down on the 24.

3rd TD of the night for Chargers' TE Rosario

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 22:42

Interesting couple of plays. Rams have the ball on the Redskins 5. A RB/Receiver went and stood at the back of the end zone but all of the Redskins ignored him. Easiest TD pass ever. Then they made the two point conversion

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 22:43

2013 we're adding a "i'm watching via http streaming, delay everything by a minute". i can only see it getting worse.

    heheh!

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 22:50

    Very accurate.

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 22:51

Maybe two minutes is safer? Or 90 seconds?

we timed it at about 40 secs, but the longer you watch, the farther out it gets (i think).

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 22:51

we timed it at about 40 secs, but the longer you watch, the farther out it gets (i think).

Oh no, buffering isn't an issue. But it is quite arbitrary as to how far behind you start.

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 22:52

Having a delay in the system would seriously harm any chances of you scoring any SPC-points

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 22:53

Oh no, buffering isn't an issue. But it is quite arbitrary as to how far behind you start.

interesting. it may not be possible to solve the issue then.

we know our live streams are 40 ish seconds off and the flash player is delayed to keep everyone in sync, but you can't do that when people have content on their actual tv's sadly.

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 22:53

Having a delay in the system would seriously harm any chances of you scoring any SPC-points

    :)

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 22:54

we'll all be back in sync on c4, but i'll be commenting in sync to meself :) :)

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 22:56

interesting. it may not be possible to solve the issue then.

Well, I think you just pick a set time delay, and you live with it.

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 22:56

Any delay is better than none"

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 22:57

Any delay is better than none"

yeah. we gave up on live sky f1 races for this very reason. it's just not possible to play along.

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 22:57

yeah. we gave up on live sky f1 races for this very reason. it's just not possible to play along.

Yeah, but highlights are awful :(

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 22:58

... So you add delay where when you're live-broadcasting?

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 22:58

Yeah, but highlights are awful :(

i like em. better than having comments or twitter describe a pass, a lap before it happens at least.

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 22:59

i like em. better than having comments or twitter describe a pass, a lap before it happens at least.

I find that quite fun - you're getting another little commentary + begin directed to watch how the move actually starts to unfold.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 23:00

Surely if you delay the comments of people watching a stream then their comments are going to appear later in the stream to people watching TV. You are going to end up with a very mangled comment stream for anyone reading back later

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 23:00

Surely if you delay the comments of people watching a stream then their comments are going to appear later in the stream to people watching TV. You are going to end up with a very mangled comment stream for anyone reading back later

    Guessing it's a client-side option.

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 23:01

i like em. better than having comments or twitter describe a pass, a lap before it happens at least.

Yeah, I just turn Twitter off for Sky races.

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 23:01

... So you add delay where when you're live-broadcasting?

there are two ways to listen to sidepodcast live. on mobile devices such as android / iphone and on your desktop browser. desktops use flash player which adds about +10 seconds delay, while mobiles use http players which adds about 40 seconds. so flash is delayed on the desktop.

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 23:02

Surely if you delay the comments of people watching a stream then their comments are going to appear later in the stream to people watching TV. You are going to end up with a very mangled comment stream for anyone reading back later

there is that. i don't actually have a solution, it may not be possible. am just acutely aware of the problem and know it's only set to get worse and worse.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 23:03

I find that quite fun - you're getting another little commentary + begin directed to watch how the move actually starts to unfold.

I have always taken the view that if I have a delay and I am live commenting an event that it is inevitable people will comment before I see something. I have often been a minute behind other people and had them post comments that gave away something that was going to happen. People will comment as they see things and nothing can be done to change that. Nor should anything be done about it

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 23:03

there is that. i don't actually have a solution, it may not be possible. am just acutely aware of the problem and know it's only set to get worse and worse.

Why do you think it will get worse? Because of people using mobile devices for things more?

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 23:04

... so flash is delayed on the desktop.

    Ahha - I get ya - clever.

If I'm having to watch with a delay, then I'm usually just thankful that I've found a stream, so really don't mind it - I'd rather be part of the action, than not.

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 23:05

there is that. i don't actually have a solution, it may not be possible. am just acutely aware of the problem and know it's only set to get worse and worse.

Can see it would be quite feasible if intermittently checking for new content, guess it would be harder to do for push?

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 23:05

Why do you think it will get worse? Because of people using mobile devices for things more?

yeah, mobile usage is massive here this year. everyone is going to be watching live sports with a tablet on their lap soon.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 23:05

there is that. i don't actually have a solution, it may not be possible. am just acutely aware of the problem and know it's only set to get worse and worse.

I don't think there is an easy or even a possible solution. And as you say it will get worse. We are bound to end up with a range of systems with everything from near instanteous to 2 minute delays

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 23:08

    Great sack

  • Mr C16/09/2012 at 23:09

Can see it would be quite feasible if intermittently checking for new content, guess it would be harder to do for push?

    dunno yet. off-season job #1 i reckon.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 23:10

    OUCH!

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 23:10

Of course, the biggest problem with a massive punt like that is that your team-mates have to try and run all the way down the field!

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 23:11

    Ooft.

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 23:11

Of course, the biggest problem with a massive punt like that is that your team-mates have to try and run all the way down the field!

Nahh - as a punter you want it to go out of bounds inside the 10.

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 23:12

Nahh - as a punter you want it to go out of bounds inside the 10.

Yes, but when it doesn't, there can be a lot of space to run in to. They did a great job to cover there.

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 23:13

That was weird. Ended up on the Indycar page :-/

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 23:13

True, but I bet they get a breather before though ;)

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 23:29

A it unfair to penalise the guy retaliating and not the guy who set out to trigger it

Yeah, but the first guy was subtle. Second guy was an idiot about it.

  • Noelinho (@Noelinho)16/09/2012 at 23:30

Well short, well wide. Predictable really.

  • Steven Roy16/09/2012 at 23:31

Yeah, but the first guy was subtle. Second guy was an idiot about it.

It's one of those things that annoyed me about round ball football as a kid that retaliation was seen as worse than someone cynically setting out to provoke it

  • Will^16/09/2012 at 23:31

I'm happy with that one: Chargers 38 - Titans 10 (final score)

start of last season he seemed out of his depth anchoring, but he grew into it.

nope. i guess they're not planning on having them. poor show compared to C4's excellence yesterday.

  • Noelinho18/09/2012 at 00:35

Sadly missed all of the C4 coverage yesterday. Really shouldn't be up for this. Have to be at work at 9am.

what if you're watching on a tablet, but commenting on a desktop? or vice-versa.

  • Steven Roy18/09/2012 at 00:58

I love watching him when he has the whole game in his hand. No-one like him. But this is ppainful

  • Steven Roy18/09/2012 at 01:00

The Falcons defence is pulling some very clever moves. They are absolutely on their game

  • Noelinho (from his bed)18/09/2012 at 01:00

ooh, you wanna delay desktop users? if someone has tv and is commenting on a desktop, you can't penalise them. it's gonna get messy.

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 01:02

I'm not watching the game, but I wanted to say I'm happy you guys are! *waves*

Well, would make it sync. But yeah, makes a mess for Freeview. But FreeSat will only be about 5 seconds out ;-)

  • Steven Roy18/09/2012 at 01:03

I'm not watching the game, but I wanted to say I'm happy you guys are! *waves*

I wish I wasn't watching. I had planned t be in bed an hour ago but I thought I would take the chance to see Manning with his new team. I think they need to practise together a little longer. In five years they will be good

  • Kai18/09/2012 at 01:05

Bad, bad time to do a false start

  • Steven Roy18/09/2012 at 01:09

  • Steven Roy18/09/2012 at 01:13

i haven't seen many games, but i've never seen anything like this. you sure you wanna sleep?

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 01:45

Beginning to think the interesting game isn't the teams, but is instead the officials trying to get control of the game back. Not looking good in anyone's eyes

Wow - 4 turnovers already?! And by the same guy!?

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 01:56

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 01:58

What film are they showing you on BBC? Come to think of it, surprised if they aren't just using the ESPN feed?

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:04

They've covered the logo, but I'm sure it's ESPN because the graphics are the same as last night, and they hadn't bothered then.

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 02:04

What film are they showing you on BBC? Come to think of it, surprised if they aren't just using the ESPN feed?

they've had a few vignettes when ads are on. showing historical stuff. that time was... the vikings going to the superbowl? we have US commentators though.

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:04

    yes! am learning too.

What I'm doing as well is I've got lined up an NFL podcast to play instead of the dull dull music

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:10

Part of the reason I'm up - I realised that I'd not actually watched any of the games that I'd set up right at the top ;)

    :)

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:13

Is Manning now operating like the Denver of last year - and he's waiting for Tebow time for a 4th quarter comeback

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:13

This is going to be the problem with the early season here. With the substitute officials, there is a risk players are going to try a lot of the illegal (ie potentially dangerous) hits

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 02:13

This is going to be the problem with the early season here. With the substitute officials, there is a risk players are going to try a lot of the illegal (ie potentially dangerous) hits

what's the reason for subs officials?

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:14

what's the reason for subs officials?

Wages (etc) dispute - instead of the refs striking as such, they've been locked out

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:14

what's the reason for subs officials?

Regulars are on strike. I forget why.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:15

Wages (etc) dispute - instead of the refs striking as such, they've been locked out

    Correct. I'm wrong

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 02:16

Wages (etc) dispute - instead of the refs striking as such, they've been locked out

    ahhh.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:20

    That was better.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:21

Payton might actually be able to pull something off here

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:22

Looks like the refs' deal ran out, and have been wanting more (money / conditions / ... ) - http://content.usatoday.com/communities/thehuddle/post/2012/05/contract-for-nfl-refs-expires-at-end-of-this-month/1#.UFfaWrJlSZh

A lot of that going on. Here's what's going on with hockey: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/16/nhl-lockout-2012-work-stoppage-hockey_n_1887536.html

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:25

Apparently the NFL one 'only' comes down do the short end of $20m.

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:25

    (a year)

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 02:25

    wow. pricey

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:26

    TD!

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:26

    And no challenges

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:26

But plays reviewed inside 2m warning - phew.

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 02:27

fans see what the people upstairs see in realtime?? f1 NEEDS that.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:27

TD indeed! Guess I'll stay up a while. :)

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:28

fans see what the people upstairs see in realtime?? f1 NEEDS that.

    New for this season.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:28

fans see what the people upstairs see in realtime?? f1 NEEDS that.

    Heehee

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:28

    wow. pricey

...but not for the NFL in the grand scheme - pennies.

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:29

Gold stars all round for those refs

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 02:29

Gold stars all round for those refs

    :)

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:30

Just about time for a fair-catch and a Hail Mary before the half.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:30

Nope, just a poor onside kick attempt

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:31

Nope, just a poor onside kick attempt

That was awful - all bouncy, but ran the clock out.

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 02:31

need to stretch me legs brb

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:32

If these are highlights of this weekend then that is great stuff :) Looks like the Big Plays

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:32

That was awful - all bouncy, but ran the clock out.

It's supposed to go ten yards and stop. Spectacular when it works, but rarely does

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:33

They showing you "Soundtracks" or something else?

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:33

It's supposed to go ten yards and stop. Spectacular when it works, but rarely does

Ohh yeah, but having the play alive for 6s rant he clock out. A normal onside might leave the receiving team with time to run a play.

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:33

They showing you "Soundtracks" or something else?

The Big Plays from the weekend.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:33

    Fair point

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:34

Sounds like the BBC is really embracing NFL and even adding their own touches to provide context to the audience. Sounds great!

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:35

This is a lot better from the Beeb - looks like they've been listening

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:36

Having said that, we're now on the music and boring visuals - still some way to go.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:37

Having said that, we're now on the music and boring visuals - still some way to go.

I'm watching an ad for - not kidding - a wireless lightbulb. Care to trade?

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:38

I'm watching an ad for - not kidding - a wireless lightbulb. Care to trade?

    Yup - we're back to a SoundFX feature :)

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:42

    Yup - we're back to a SoundFX feature :)

    . Alright. Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvqTUUPzIsk&feature=youtube_gdata_player

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:43

By the way, another blown call in the 2-minute drive last quarter

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 02:44

I'm watching an ad for - not kidding - a wireless lightbulb.

    wha?

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:44

That bulb is actually a good idea, but the add is 3x too long (and better than some ads that you can see)

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:45

    wha?

yes, you get sound effects features, and the US audience gets late night cheap cable TV adverts

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:45

By the way, another blown call in the 2-minute drive last quarter

    What / where?

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:46

That bulb is actually a good idea, but the add is 3x too long (and better than some ads that you can see)

yes, but you have to admit to having bought a wireless lightbulb

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 02:46

yes, but you have to admit to having bought a wireless lightbulb

    :)

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:46

    What / where?

the ten yards on the pass interference in the end zone was doled out to college rules.

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:47

yes, but you have to admit to having bought a wireless lightbulb

    Men-barrassing

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:49

That BBC logo being yellow keeps making me think they've thrown a flag

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:50

    Men-barrassing

Have to staple some Romex cable running to it for appearances

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:51

That BBC logo being yellow keeps making me think they've thrown a flag

Standard BBC Sport logo? Yes, that would be the right size and clor

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 02:51

Standard BBC Sport logo? Yes, that would be the right size and clor

Exactly. Black on yellow. And in the info bar at the bottom.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 02:59

    Officials again

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 02:59

That BBC logo being yellow keeps making me think they've thrown a flag

am i going crazy, or did someone literally throw a yellow flag onto the pitch?

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:00

am i going crazy, or did someone literally throw a yellow flag onto the pitch?

Yup, those are penalty flags. Each of the officials has one.

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:00

am i going crazy, or did someone literally throw a yellow flag onto the pitch?

That's what throwing a flag means - they generally do it around the spot of the penalty

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 03:00

:) I find that I start talking in Americanisms when watching / talking about NFL.

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 03:02

btw, i keep forgetting 5live have nlf commentary on sundays. please can someone remind me next weekend!

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:05

The Falcons look like the have a very good offensive playbook

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:05

:) I find that I start talking in Americanisms when watching / talking about NFL.

    I just don't have a comeback for that. :)

    Other than I'm sorry.

  • Mr C18/09/2012 at 03:05

    Other than I'm sorry.

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:07

    Other than I'm sorry.

:) Just like referring to halftime as "The Half" - it's not a problem - I find it amusing

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:08

Matt Ryan has the old-school playbook out on the sidelines. Either that or he's reviewing Denver defensive formations.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:12

:) Just like referring to halftime as "The Half" - it's not a problem - I find it amusing

    We all have our quirks.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:13

Matt Ryan has the old-school playbook out on the sidelines. Either that or he's reviewing Denver defensive formations.

Truly, this could get ugly pretty quickly

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:13

Truly, this could get ugly pretty quickly

    Especially from the 6

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:14

I'm expecting a serious blitz - trying for a safety.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:14

I'm expecting a serious blitz - trying for a safety.

    ..or an interception

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:15

    ..or an interception

Yup or piling on the pressure forcing a mistake

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:15

Yup or piling on the pressure forcing a mistake

Almost had the safety on that one

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:17

Almost had the safety on that one

    Matt Ryan surviving that one

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:19

If nothing else, this drive is eating up a lot of time

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:22

    Nice coverage on that punt

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:23

    This. Could. Work.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:24

The game is still lost for the Broncos, of course. But there's an outside chance at retaining a little honor.

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:26

The game is still lost for the Broncos, of course. But there's an outside chance at retaining a little honor.

Not sure they can manage 3 back-to-back TD drives tonight, but maybe 1 and a FG.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:26

The game is still lost for the Broncos, of course. But there's an outside chance at retaining a little honor.

    ..or dignity.

    Whatever.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:27

Not sure they can manage 3 back-to-back TD drives tonight, but maybe 1 and a FG.

I should go check what the spread was supposed to be

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:27

    Whatever.

It read fine the first way - knew what you meant. #Consolation

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:28

It read fine the first way - knew what you meant. #Consolation

Ha! Works either way. My mental thesaurus wouldn't leave me alone.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:31

Seems like most folks had the Falcons by three points.

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:35

We'll not be seeing Manning doing any Brees / Brady dives over the top or Vick underneath.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:36

We'll not be seeing Manning doing any Brees / Brady dives over the top or Vick underneath.

    No, we shall not.

My cat just woke up and tried to say "hi" - but I stopped him this time.

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:43

Alex Smith is currently a metaphor for Peyton's night - caught with his pants down.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:43

My cat just woke up and tried to say "hi" - but I stopped him this time.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:45

Alex Smith is currently a metaphor for Peyton's night - caught with his pants down.

Yes, but he's starting to do that hurry up thing. Will it work this time?

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:46

Yes, but he's starting to do that hurry up thing. Will it work this time?

Not if he wastes plays running them into the pile

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:46

    ^^ Matt Ryan - oops

No worries. I wouldn't be able to get my own name right at 5am

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:47

Alex Smith was last night's late night name

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:47

Not if he wastes plays running them into the pile

    Yes, no, this isn't working

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:49

More pass-rush pressure rqd on the next play

Prob a minute or so ahead

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:53

    Yup. Sorry for the spolier

    Commenting > spoilers - I'm not bothered

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:53

Prob a minute or so ahead

I'd only just seen the 1st

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:54

I'd only just seen the 1st

Ok, perhaps a little more than a minute

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:56

Ok, at risk of another spoiler, Payton might be able to get within that 3-point spread

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:56

...if he gets a little luck

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:56

Ok, at risk of another spoiler, Payton might be able to get within that 3-point spread

    Lol - I'm not worried

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:57

Just refreshed my BBC online page, and gained back that minute.

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:58

    Go for it?

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:58

This is going to end up a little closer than I thought

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 03:58

    Go for it?

    Yup

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 03:59

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 04:10

Yup, we just had the handshakes on our screens here.

Yup game's up. Manning will rue those 1st 1/4 turnovers.

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 04:11

Falcons took 13 points off turnovers tonight

  • Will^18/09/2012 at 04:11

Interesting watch that. I'm a Chargers fan, so Broncos are divisional, and Falcons are next week.

  • ChrisS18/09/2012 at 04:12

Falcons took 13 points off turnovers tonight

Yes they did. That's it for me. Go get some sleep. Hope to maybe check in at week's end.
