It all comes down to this, the big one, the final. The track designers have done some epic work, creating a challenging course that includes the sport's first ever corkscrew - dropping ten metres and turning 360 degrees. It's crazy. With Kyle Croxall taking an early lead in the standings but recent stumbles allowing American Cameron Naasz to take over the top spot, there is everything to skate for in this final of five fantastic events this year.
Crashed Ice, Quebec
Published by Christine Blachford on
Hullo!
Hi Lukeh.
hey all. drinking wine, ready for some crashed ice. how are we all?
Up from the football match I was at today. Depressed from the Scotland rugby score. Enjoying Sebring but someone has just hit a tyre wall really hard. Trying to figure out how I can watch Crashed Ice, Sebring and F1 quali (should it happen) at the same time
that is an insane challenge. even finland doesn't have that kind of bandwidth.
we're watching christine's team beat tony fernandes' on motd :)
Sebring and F1 are on TV. Unfortunately I only have one TV
I am amazed you two are still watching football. I thought you would lose interest
awake... for now. I fear my night time crashed ice sleeping conclusions will affect qualifying!
I only recognised that it was my match because I spotted Harry Redknapp off of Caterham videos. Not sure I am keeping up.
Remember, if you ever get stuck:
Person 1: Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
Person 2: What was Wenger thinking sending Walcott on that early?
Person 1: The thing about Arsenal is, they always try to walk it in!
tonight is the really good circuit isn't it?
It has a corkscrew!
i've never watched a football match where players warm up for one minute then hide in the changing rooms for 30, nor have i ever seen a match where the game is delayed until tomorrow because they'll all fall over in the rain.
it's not hard to see why it's popular.
Laguna Seca's chilly cousin
It was never offside. Unless the opposition scored in which case it was a mile offside.
In any situation where you want to dispute the refs judgement. He must be the only person in the ground who saw it that way.
If your team is bottom of the league by 45 points. If we could bring in 2 or 3 players we would not be in danger of relegation
uh oh, I am yawning already. Crashed Ice's curse of me falling asleep must not happen tonight!
you have 9 months to recover. 9 months.
I played in one in my teens where we stayed in the dressing room for 45 minutes because the local yobs wanted to use the pitch and were not happy our opponents had booked it. They conveyed their displeaure by lobbing rocks at the roof and door of the dressing room
!!
OK that corkscrew does look very cool
ooh, has it started, or are ya watching replays?
Onboard run at the bottom of the page

ahh cool. thought i was missing something.
More of a helter skelter than a corkscrew. Great track. I expect lots of people to get knocked over
Countdown is at 16 mins 30 ish
4 minutes till kick off
Right, Quebec now has my full attention. Come on, Scotty.
the feed has been running for a while with no commentary
oooooh it also splits into two!
I really like the end, too. An epic jump to finish, rather than just coasting to the end.
what a circuit! really long too
How? What?
there's a bit in the middle where there's like.. a little corridor. Hard to explain!

The track. I thought you meant the video. Totally baffled
One side is longer but easier, the other is shorter but harder, says the guy. They've done it before, I think, but here it just adds to the madness!
Scotty is in the first heat
THey have done it a few times. Most of the early ones we watched had a split
Ooh, I think we are go.
Women's quarter final first
ladies back in action
shortcut.
Close finish!
I made it! Evening everyone!
Hi chris
yamamoto is racing?
Skates first cleverness again.
I think a Canadian lady may win this one
That is how you use the shortcut
Corkscrew needs race driving technique. Slow in- fast out
so if the round of 64 is running late and f1 happens on time we should be able to see almost all of the round of 32.
So far, most of the girls have taken that shortcut.
In the last race the leader didn't and was easily passed. Looks like it is a no brainer unless you are in third or fourth and the leaders are tripping each other up in there
Ladies' semi-finals are set. Now moving to the men's round of 64.
Scott!
Hello. I have 3 streams running (this, Sebring, F1) so I'm getting confused.
how much bandwidth do you have?
Is it really a shortcut if everyone uses it?
I suppose not. So we have the natural line and a long cut.
That'll clear things up if you ask why Tom Kristensen is sliding down the pitlane in Melbourne
croxy makes it look easy.
It's about time too!
♥
That guy fell at the last hump! Gutted.
Yay for Scotty! ♥
de Paoli and Mels in the next heat
Poor dude!
Usually this would fail but new PC seems to be fine with it. I live 200m from the BT exchange. :)
:)
wow. best investment evah.
great on-board view!
Sebring is piped to TV via VGA cable. I'm alt-tabbing between here and Crashed Ice and Twitter. Sky is parked to the side somewhere. It's raining.
don't forget you can open sidepodcast in a new window and make it really thin.
Heat 3 has multiple Dallagos from Austria. Brothers I assume
Yay! The other brothers!
I found another bug by doing that. I take screenshot a sec
That is what I have to cope with the size of the Crashed Ice vid
ta.
One of the Dallagos was the one who wore a disguise last time, right?
I don't remember them
Bit fuzzy, but clipping
http://patwotton.posterous.com/comment-bug-in-ie-win8-betterthan
shoot! is chrome a temporary option?
Next heat
9 VAN WIJHE Rikard SWE
13 GUOLLA Daniel CAN
29 BOUVET-MORRISSETTE Guillaume CAN
55 CHOUINARD Jean-Guy CAN
it's a mutated version of alanis.
Fine in FF.
Alanis is in 2 heats time
That was an ambitious move!
cool. haven't managed to source a copy of IE10 yet :(
OMG! so close
No worries.
Hi all,. just got in, what round are we on?
I really like this course, I don't think I've seen one this long before. I've not see Quebec before.
4 GREEN Adam USA
34 ANDERSSON Mikael SWE
44 WITTY Tyler USA
71 VAN ROOSMALEN Bart NED
Aren't there multiple Wittys. I think it was one of them who wore the disguise?
Results under review?
Just started round of 64.
Thanks, glad I didn't miss too much, really looking forward to seeing this course
It's Twitty!
First thing they showed was the women's quarter finals so semis and final still to go
Are we going to comment on F1 Q2 here too, or are you making another thread for that? :)
hey gavin, qually 2 thread is here: http://sidepodcast.com/event/qualifying-australia-formula-1-world-championship-2013
Thanks MrC..! I was in the FBFB but saw this at the top of the live events list. :)
Alanis vs Niefy

2 PIHLAINEN Arttu FIN
36 GYSEL Pieter BEL
43 JOUTSENLAHTI Lari FIN
64 WANCHULAK Brad CAN
How did he do that, when he hasn't raced all year?? It's like he was floating.
What a guy!
It was a great performance right from the start
17 LAVROV Andrey RUS
20 HARVEY Hubert CAN
24 BEAUCHEMIN Robin CAN
76 LAUR Brent CAN
croxall's storming ahead
Nassz won his race
Ooh, that dude caught his skate on the wall and did a Massa-esque 360!
Ooh, looks like that's an injured skater. He leap-frogged over another skater and landed on his back in the wall. Ouch.
They're still huddled around the fallen skater. Worrying.
The timer thing is back, that must be a good sign.
I think they're also fixing the barrier. Got the stream muted, so not sure
Mm, I thought that could be it. Probably just being careful with the guy's back and getting him out without moving too much.
Normally they get up after 30 seconds but if he is still down after 6 minutes it must be a bit more serious
Paul doesn't look very happy about his weight
Alonso keeping his helmet on. Doors to manual
Wrong thread again
Scotty
Scotty wins
diPaoli second
8 DALLAGO Marco AUT
13 GUOLLA Daniel CAN
46 NAGATA Travis CAN
55 CHOUINARD Jean-Guy CAN
Yes!
Niefy time.
15 FISHER John CAN
23 NIEFNECKER Martin GER
34 ANDERSSON Mikael SWE
71 VAN ROOSMALEN Bart NED
Have we been watching this since 2010???
hey all. what did i miss?
I'm afraid so! http://sidepodcast.com/post/red-bull-crashed-ice-final
Fisher and Niefy go through. Niefy led the whole race apart from the little bit at the end
Unbelievable
5 WEDGE Derek SUI
12 DUGERDIL Tristan FRA
40 SCHMITT Pacome FRA
48 ANAKA Linden CAN
wedgy!
You'd think we'd know what we were talking about by now :)
That would mean knowing facts and we can't have that
R2 and Lavrov next
2 PIHLAINEN Arttu FIN
17 LAVROV Andrey RUS
43 JOUTSENLAHTI Lari FIN
76 LAUR Brent CAN
Wedgy saying the ice is really bad.
That works in his favour, doesn't it?
Go R2
Close for second!
Great race between the front two. R2 was absolutely perfect in the way he positioned himself
The other Croxall next
7 KLINTRUP Paavo FIN
10 CROXALL Kyle CAN
27 URBAN Michael CZE
47 BERGESON Andrew USA
Kyle has so much power
I guess if the ice is rough being heavy could be an advantage
Or maybe not
Championship leader Naasz.
3 NAASZ Cameron USA
16 HORST Adam CAN
41 RUEGGE Andreas SUI
79 TREMBLAY Paul CAN
Naasz goes out
Shock!
Ooh, he's peeved.
Difficulty out of the gate too?
That is a very polite way of saying it
6 MUELLER Kim SUI
11 JOUHKINMAINEN Miikka FIN
26 KOLC Lukas CZE
45 DUMOULIN Louis-Philippe CAN
Mueller face plants out of second
Finn and LPD go through
R2 admitting he's flippin' tired.
I wonder if they will have an uphill race through the corkscrew
This is R2's last race.
Awww.
bugger, i liked him :(
First quarter has Scotty
1 CROXALL Scott CAN
8 DALLAGO Marco AUT
13 GUOLLA Daniel CAN
19 DE PAOLI Jim SUI
I'm torn. I want Scotty to do well, but if he crashes out, I can go to bed :)
There are only 6 more races after this one
Yay! (boo)
heh
What was diPaoli thinking?
Di Pauli looked over his shoulder, saw competition coming, went faster, fell down. Better not to know!
:)
Go Niefy
5 WEDGE Derek SUI
12 DUGERDIL Tristan FRA
15 FISHER John CAN
23 NIEFNECKER Martin GER
How is Neify still in this? He must have remembered how to skate.
Wedgy blocking like crazy.
This course seems to suit the big powerful guys more than some of the recent tracks
That was a good one.
Next one could be better
2 PIHLAINEN Arttu FIN
10 CROXALL Kyle CAN
17 LAVROV Andrey RUS
27 URBAN Michael CZE
Crikey, yes!
That's right, it was Marco Dellago with the crazy glasses. Brilliant attitude to the sport, just loves being there.
R2 wins, Croxy second.
R2 looks like he means to go out winning. Tough job to race Kyle in the quarters, semis and the final though
11 JOUHKINMAINEN Miikka FIN
16 HORST Adam CAN
41 RUEGGE Andreas SUI
45 DUMOULIN Louis-Philippe CAN
LPD way last
semi finals / heat 1
1 CROXALL Scott CAN
5 WEDGE Derek SUI
19 DE PAOLI Jim SUI
23 NIEFNECKER Martin GER
I wonder if Niefy and Wedge can use team work to do anything about Scotty. Doubt it though
We must be due some more ladies racing soon.
You called that one
Everyone down
Woah, that was like wrestling!
There will be some epic bruises after that one.
I think the men have carved up the ice and the women are too light to cut through to the good ice underneath
Reverse helmet cam is odd looking but I think I like it
The leader lost a load of time by going the long way through the shortcut
men apparently running heated skates too (new thing).
What!?
Very high tech
Several Red Bull Crashed Ice athletes will be experimenting with battery-heated blades to increase their speed down the ice cross downhill track in Quebec City, a new device that some say could take the sport to the next level.
http://www.redbull.com/cs/Satellite/en_INT/Article/Hot-blades-to-carve-up-the-ice--021243328625196
You have to wonder how long they stay hot
I thought you meant like tyre warmers. On board heaters make a lot of sense
v.clever.
Stewards!
semi finals / heat 1
1 CROXALL Scott CAN
5 WEDGE Derek SUI
19 DE PAOLI Jim SUI
23 NIEFNECKER Martin GER
I wonder how much power it takes to get a sensible amount of heat into a blade when it is in freezing ambient temp and in contact with ice
more research required. just read it when i was looking for a stream.
Wedge from fourth to second in one move!
Wedge won it, Scotty second. Kyle looking on from the top.
Niefy needs lessons from R2 on positioning himself to stop people cruising past him
Think this is going to be a great final
semi finals / heat 2
2 PIHLAINEN Arttu FIN
10 CROXALL Kyle CAN
11 JOUHKINMAINEN Miikka FIN
16 HORST Adam CAN
Go R2
r2 so strong out of the gate. lost no speed at all.
Two races in a row Kyle has tried the long way and lost
someone pay R2 to compete. surely he can get enough sponsorship to make it worthwhile?
Hopefully over the summer he will change his mind about retiring
I imagine Red Bull is paying decent prize money for the top guys
wait, scot is in the final? how did that happen?
Because he's awesome.
Women's final first?
what's he doing that's stopping him from training then?
Well, he came first or second in each of his heats
oh right.
final
1 CROXALL Scott CAN
2 PIHLAINEN Arttu FIN
5 WEDGE Derek SUI
10 CROXALL Kyle CAN
Sounds more like time than money.
He is Finnish so probably drinking and driving sideways on ice at 100mph
#legend
brilliant ending.
Graceful finish!
Desforges went head first. Bad move
such a great course. wish i could've seen more of it.
All I ask is that he doesn't fall down.
best race everrrrr!!!!
I'll take that!! What a great race. Where was Kyle???
Glad R2 won in his last one
omg what a hero R2 is. flippin amazing.
Glad to see R2 win his last race.
Worst race I have ever seen Kyle do.
Awesome race!
best lineup, closest race, brilliant course. what more can we ask>
Someone needs to talk some sense into R2
You may not have seen as much as you'd like, but you saw the best bit :)
Did Scotty ever beat his brother before?
not so far as i know.
"My legs are like spaghetti"
Not in the same race. I remember Kyle going out in a quarter final or something and Scotty getting to the final
Wedge is the champion!
aww, he didn't know.
Excellent.
Wedge :)
Great to see the others looking genuinely happy
Standings: Wedge, Kyle, Naasz, Scott.
That is one ugly trophy
Been a brillo season, thanks for sharing it all with us, no matter what the timezone!
Thanks for providing the space for the comments :)
loved it. feel like death right now, but totally worth it.
same time next year?
Heck yeah!
Loved every minute. Just wish they were all in sensible time zones like this one
:)
gotta say good night. back at 5.
Good night. I will be up for another 45 minutes until Sebring finishes
We never did hear how the injured guy was
