Daily: 31st August 2010

By Nick
Good Morning!
…and incase I don’t see you, Good Afternoon, Good Evening & Good Night!
Now we have the formalities completed, I can introduce myself as Nick, and this is the Daily Post for the last day of August 2010. New Years Eve is just four months away; and those living in the northern hemisphere will be suffering the depths of winter. Fortunately for me I have left those cold climbs behind me for the sunshine of the UAE.
Speaking of which it is now only ten and a half weekends until my personal favorite race, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The concerts are yet to be announced, but the seats have nearly all sold out, so if you’re thinking of popping by, be sure to avoid missing out like I did last year.
Those of you in the UK have just enjoyed Bank Holiday Monday, which for our American readers is the equivalent of Labor Day, which you will be enjoying next week. That hasn’t stopped the F1 news flowing though so here is a quick roundup.
- The organizers of the Korean GP have released some photos of their race circuit, but the track itself is conspicuous by its absence (although you can see a slither of tarmac in one image)
- The latest Christine’s Rankings update is out and hot off the press, get in there quick to see whose moving and who’s shaking!
- Adam Cooper spotted a great banner some Massa Fans took to Spa, perhaps we that nickname will catch on?
- Sticking with nicknames, and Joe has given a great rundown of what some of the driver are called in the Pressroom, with ‘Cowboyashi’ being a personal favourite
- In Sidepodcast news, the illustrious Sidepodspa crew have parted company after what looked like an amazing weekend, and F1minute has returned with a great roundup of the Belgian Grand Prix
- Sebastian Vettel has come under quite a lot of criticism following his eventful race, Will Buxton has a written a good article about where he stands with this great quote: “In short, the man nicknamed Baby Schumi is acting a little bit too much like a baby, and little bit too much like Schumi.”
- But was it really his fault? The Red Bull has apparently been gaining an advantage though its flexibility this season, but this video seems to show it becoming completely unstable in the McLaren’s airflow seconds before the crash. Is Adrian Newey being too clever for his own good?
I hope you all have a great day. If you are reading this and lurking on the site without commenting, why not join the discussion? What better day than today, the day of my first daily post to jump in and get involved?
hullo new day. hello nick's daily.
yo
i hate having to walk past drunks to check in
i hate getting to my room and finding it full of others mess
i hate arriving at midnight so not settling as it will wake everyone up
i hate top bunks.
i knew all this in melb and booked this trip anyway :D
you're in a room of drunken strangers?
you could stay up all night and stay on the internet - i've done that plenty of times in hostels
Nick wrote a daily?! awesome! it's great! thanks Nick!
oh my god :(
he's ace. no arm-twisting required.
Hi Amy, sorry things are rubbish. You were so happy when I left you with Alistair :)
brilliant! :)
i will be happier tomorrow when i can run away from this place until its time to sleep again
This is possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen JOe write
:D

Finally finishing my IndyCar report - decided to leave a couple of days to sink in. I think I knocked out 7,000 this weekend alone
right, i cant figure out why my laptop thinks it;s now 5:55am.. but hey ho. time for me to sleep! night all! xx
Night Lou :)
night lou
A 13 year old rider was killed in one of the other motorcycle races at Indy this weekend:
nbcsports.msnbc.c…/38904181/from/ET
Never good when that happens but unfortunately inevitable
Aye - saw that. A tragic incident similar to what happened to Craig Jones at Brands in 2008
:(
yeah. You race long enough, it's going to happen eventually. I find it quite amazing that noone has been killed in F1 in such a long time. But it will happen again sometime, I'm sure.
Am getting the impression that the battery in my Macbook is on a downward spiarl
wassup chap?
The life is noticeably shorter - but when it runs dry, it has a horrible habit of cutting out rather than going to "sleep"
finished blogging Chicagoland - will link it when people are awake
:)
ahh yes. same.
Not bragging, but my word quota this weekend hit around 10,000 words this weekend
:O
brilliant
:D
failblog.files.wo…-81e53eb15d98.jpg
crazy fool :)
I swear, finishing that IndyCar post was hard...
i'll read in a bit. it took an hour to read pressdog's write up.
He does put a nice, light-hearted swing to it though. Sadly, only around 20,000 people were at it.
Hello. I made it home.
hi pat
phew!
did you sleep?
You must be knackered.
yes i slept or rather dozed for a good 40+ minutes at the place i stopped when i last commented. It helped a lot. So did a proper hot meal.
brain is mush now. Makes no sense spending so long at such speed yet taking so long.
right folks, i must sleep too - i have a 6.30 alarm
:(
night
Good night
we counted you all out and we've counted you all back in.
i'd call that a success.
see ya leigh.
Haven't heard that in donkey's years.
:)
You do know it comes from the Falklands War
i'm shattered, need to sit for a few mins before bed though. The Belgian drive was difficult and highly stressful. who knew brussels had more than one airport?
Not a clue.
yeah, but it's a classic "media studies" moment. how to tell the audience everything they need to know when the exact number was classified information.
an absolute genius piece of broadcasting, given the circumstances.
satnav gave me a choice so i used the one i'd heard of.
I had no idea that is was used for teaching.
Good plan
you drove from more hours than i've been awake today.
anyway, lesson learned for next time - book a late train and allow all day.
Just as we now know to get there Weds night so we can do pitwalk. Was happy to push on when going there. Coming back we were all shattered before we even left the campsite, Spa demands lots of walking which I largely enjoyed.. But it means we're all tired and with the resultant slipups and high tensions that causes..
going to rehydrate then sleep, see you tuesday night. unpacking can wait. No time to comment at work tmrw, busy busy
night pat.
Good night Pat. Enjoy your sleep
Hello, anyone awake ?
Morning Jordan, everyone.
Must rush off to lunch, but not without sharing this commercial. Beats the Canberra Milk Kid anytime. :D

Good morning!
What a lovely daily! (I will be more carefull next time)
This is really harsh on the poor donkeys, but this may be the maddest tweet i have ever seen:
twitter.com/7DAYS…tuses/22595667310
no, just take the train. It only took us 6h from Emma's doorstep to the paddock entrance at Spa.
i am out of the hostel. dont know where i am going though!
follow the smell of curry wurst?
i have gpsed the nearest station and now i need to work out how to buy a ticket and how to get to the zoo.
Morning all.
Panda!
Are you singing "Im going to the zoo ooo ooo"
Its unlikely but it might help you find the way?
Morning peeps
Christine/Mr C: Once I sync my phone to the iMac, I'll be able to send you some audio
I can't get near it yet, the vibration is too strong from Gavin's snoring ;)
Breakfast of champions, killer of hangovers
I have already ordered the sauce from Germany
We're getting audio?
SidepodSpa Chat
Oh cool.
i have found the train i need to be on but the ticket macines give me german options even when i press english. i wonder where i can find a person
There is curryworst sauce?i thought you just added curry powder and garlic to sausage meat?
you should point at the machine and say
"Achtung! "
"Das ist nicht so gut"
No, it's lovely* curry sauce on top
*Your mileage may vary
can you take a picture?
Buying train tickets, the Sidepodcast way :)
i have a ticket! now to find the train again. i have almost conquered alexanderplatz.
woo!
No wonder Kimi likes Rallying!
www.youtube.com/w…e=player_embedded
Marcus Gronhom talks so much
i am on a train hooray. germany has a lot less english than belgium.
I'm awake! Getting up ridiculously early for spa each day has had an effect of my sleeping patterns.
How is everyone this morning? it is kinda nice to wake up with no noise of rain on the roof..
Just talk english LOUDLY and they will understand you
More time to get photos organised! ;-)
Thats the best noise ever though!
ha! I soo just want to go back to sleep..
Hi diddly ho Lou.
noo the best noise ever is 24 f1 cars zooming up eau rouge! ;)
do i feel sorry....? Nup, still jealous :-)
go on, rub it in!
*waves* how are you Christine? Had a good week?
Fabulous. Three day weekends rule.
:) hehe you have been to the Melbourne gp though! I would so anything to go to that!
sorry shall save it for the blog posts :)
at least it doesnt rain there.
....oh, wait
ahh yes I forgot about the bank holiday. Awesome!
ha! loving it.
sounds like you all had a great time
was there any driver autograph spots?
:D
nope not really, Pamela and Amy said Melbourne is muccch better for that kinda thing.
thats a bit anoying. sounds like a harder place to "find" people
Awesome race though
Did everyone see the giant spider I caught last night?
mrschristine.post….com/giant-spider
#dontlooklou
wow i didnt know you had spiders like that in the UK
Thursday is really the day for drivers.. All will be revealed soon I'm sure..
aha!
*starts drumming fingers and waiting*
oh - Amy's not writing this is she?:D
Wow, did you give it a name?
is it one of those humoungus ones??? Like the ones that are big and black... The ones that come out and upset me late at night??
I named him Selwyn but decided not to keep him.
#nothingforloutosee
Christine: in terms of file size, what is ideal for you guys
I have 29 mins that I converted to mp3 at a high rate and it came up at 70mb. I've just run it through at a lower rate
What a brilliant spider name :)
heh no. I have started another sidepodspa wave to discuss the final details of any posts but there should be a few when people have uploaded piccys and things .
Probably for the best!
My old house here used to have loads of geckos in and around it . my new flat doesnt, i am going to have to go around with an ice cream box to catch one i think
#DontTellAlison
Ah.... Hi bassano on the iPad :)
It's now 28mb
I guess it depends. Quality is more important than file size, really.
Bonjour, I think it may be L'iPad ;)
just so people know this isn't me :)
I had a friend who used to keep a gecko as a pet. She called it Gizmo which I thought was so unoriginal.
I will chuck in a drop box now and send you a link when sync'd
You guys can choose
This is very confusing
oh goodness you are talking about giving I a name... God it must be big *hides*
Ah, I see what you mean now
[blushes]
You need to change to The Real Lou :)
Bassanooooooooo!!
That was me, btw
Was it a little one, ore one of the big ones which make the Gec---kooo noise.
They are huge i remember sleeping in bali with one directly above the bed, i was terrified it would drop or keep us up all night with its chanting
hehe, That was me! :P
It was only little. I held it a couple of times, but she was a bit fussy about it.
hehe if you didn't want to change the name you could always just give me the iPad....
Oh god.
Would have been easier.
yeah that was my thinking too.. :)
THE PANDA IS AWAKE
OMG!
Hi guys. Am a bit sad this morning. Really looking forward to going home and seeing everyone, and sleeping in my own bed, but am sad that my adventure is all over. I liked living on "normal" time.
Amy - I will try to find a Belgian restaurant in Melb for our post Singapore debrief dinner! And I will let you know once I book that flight to Malaysia for next year. Eeeekk. I can see a pattern emerging - go to GP with Amy, come back and book GP in another country!
Hehe, it's hard to work out who is being a bad influence on who :)
morniiiiiiing
haha. We may be egging each other on :D
Hullo everyone
Morning Leigh and Lukeh.
Hiya christine. How are you?
Yes, basic kit when you're friends with Amy :)
I'm not sure I book things so far ahead though!
Good, yourself?
Yay :)
I'm good thanks, lou's house is so nice but I'm sad I'm leaving her later today :(
:D
S'up?
Awww. It's okay though because leaving just means you get to come back.
I think there's a queue now? :)
Hi Leigh, Lukeh
Do you get some brownies for the trip home?
No but the memories, photos and good times make up for that :)
hi christine,
how are you?
No complaints, you?
Ohh, I dunno. I'd demand brownies :)
*looks at google reader in fear*
Her brownies are really, seriously yummy to be fair. Everyone who had them at Spa will definitely agree!
not too bad - a bit tired, but whatcha gonna do..?
i need to find some food but im lost in the zoo. oops.
Christine: I have emailed you 2 links for Sidepod chat
Please let me know if you need anything

True story
Morning! Bassano just made a wicked breakfast of chillied scrambled eggs with cheese, sliced tomatoes and toast with a lovely coffee :-)
So we are just chilling out before we go to the airport in 15 minutes...
With a side of mayo?
Morning Gavin
Yum!
I'm so Mayo'd out!
I see them, thanks.
:D
I think I've had enough Mayo for a while!

Does Mr C know there are two terminals at Gatwick?
He should probably check that out
The monorail doesn't operate between them any more :(
I think I'm hosting something on Wednesday at my house... Only my friends forgot to ask me.... I'm now stuck with arranging something I think. What a nice welcome home.
You could say no?
I feel really confused it's like I'm the only one that didn't know.... Now people are asking me what's happening?! I... Am so confused. It's like a goodbye thing for people before we go to uni I think... :/
but in actual answer to this... I think I might do... But they make it sound like I already knew and offered. This is so surreal.
Ahh, but they would say that, wouldn't they? ;)
hehehehe!
Franck ping: iheartfranck.com/…onwards-to-italy/
The calendar is different to the calendar set before the season? Superleague is crazy.
Last time I checked they hadn't even decided how or where the season was going to end.
Definitely driving around Europe, seeing a track and saying 'Yeah, that looks alright!'
kind of like knocking on a friend's door and hoping he's around to play football...
i am in a german kfc #predictable
Any gravy?
they have potato and gravy here. proper kfc!
Hmm.
What's the panda having?
Hello all, on the ferry with free wi-fi. Mowed Mum's lawn before I left & can't stop sneezing. Is lovely to see family & friends but am looking forward to being home.
Noticed there is a panda watch on Channel 5 at 6pm all week, don't know if you can view online but might be worth a look.
hi janna
My brother sent me a text about that too. I fear my reputation might be spreading :)
panda feeding time was 11.30 and at 11 he went and sat by the door. i think he was expecting them. sadly door was locked and i couldnt get him out.
Bah, stoopid zoo security procedures.
Is he back from the airport then?
Oooh Christine... Did you see Leo's hat?
http://yfrog.com/j12j5kj
Eeehehe.
Nice!
This petrol station has such normal stuff
I miss Belgian ones
OH MY GOD! Christian Horner is an.... Red Bull suck.
aww no strange music?
Booo Horner and his silly comments
www.autosport.com…port.php/id/86276
"Jenson, braking where he did, just took him completely by surprise. In trying to avoid him he got himself into a spin that ultimately collected Jenson in very, very difficult conditions"
Rrrrrrrrrrubbish, even the picture shows that part of the track was dry at that point
Yes ny comment was in reply to lukehs... before he wrote it.. lukeh being here is confusing for my commenting.
:)
Okaaay...
Afternoon lovely people.
hi rg
he mentioned the horner thing.. then i commented and then he commented it.. how confusing! :)
hi RG.
this could be a fun game. "christian horner is...BLANK"
...desperate to keep his job?
...funding the BBC pre/post race budget
...Made out of organic cheddar
:)
wouldn't he melt? http://www.f1technical.net/news/3122
hehe sorry.. gosh i've fallen out with the team so badly this weekend.
oh..
... determined to make me hate Red Bull.. and regret i bought a red bull hat.
ok now that i have done some walking, berlin is amazing.
It's a great city :)
Does cheese melt in water?
Sounds like its time for an experiment!
...keeping Vettel's smile locked in a safe
i a even kind of settled in my hostel. only complaint is there is no plug to plug stuff into other than the lamp one and i need the other lady in this room to leave so i can shift her bed to get to it.
What did the red bull wing do when vettel was following/ overtaking/ crashing into webber?
Just looked at the video with lukeh of the vettel webber crash and it looks the same... how is that safe? And how was it allowed to happen twice?
www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=aRMezk6neNE
I mentioned it the other day.
What's he said now?
it was NOT jensons fault. He was braking normally.
It's OK I've found it.
I agree. The conditions were a bit tricky, but Jenson was defending his line.
Exactly.
Boarding my flight to Dubai shortly. I have BBC forum and podcasts to keep me entertained.

Safe journey Pamela
I've just dropped Gavin off and arrived back at home
No more driving for over 20hrs, yayyy!
www.anvari.org/co…lon_Smithers.html
Are you stopping here?
Just seen that JK Rowling donated $15 million to a multiple sclerosis clinic in Scotland. That's a mighty donation, good on her.
see if you configure out what they are looking at! :)
No unfortunately. Onto KL then Melb. Just a few hours at the airport.
*stares at ceiling*
I wonder if she ticked the gift aid box?
Thanks. You deserve a driving break!
have a lovely flight Pamela, you're nearly In a world were you can have your normal Internet on your phone again :)
booo, it will be humid, dont go outside like i did yesterday!
Thanks Lou. Am very much looking forward to having internet wherever and whenever I want!
Also back in your bed, always a good feeling when you return. Plus your doggy!
byyyye pamela!
i found a plug behind the door. if anyone comes in i am getting whacked in the head.
You should email everyone and warn them
hehehe 3G is vital for us addicts :)
Oops, I mean cat for pamela...
#sorrypamela
ouch...
Got to go take lukeh to the station now :( I hate goodbyes
Bye Lukeh
ahhhhh.....
back from lunch - nicely filled
:)
Awe...
www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=QbN0g8-zbdY
Webber crashing into the back of Kovalainen would be a better starting point.
Vettel crashing into Webber was caused by the loose nut behind the wheel.
did that, couldn't find anything out of the ordinary.
eh? he turned the steering wheel into him.
that's who I was referring to
ooh :)
eh? he turned the steering wheel into him.
I think that may have been the joke...
He means it was like PEBKAC
tbh, I think people are barking up the wrong tree, it's the rear of the car that is out of control
lifted off the throttle and the EBD switched off perhaps? it was similar to Hamilton's off in free practice at Hockenheim
Another hour until I get to Worthing. Rail journeys go so much better with House on the ipod. Am so looking forward to my pc with Chrome. Can't get mother away from IE :(.
Hello!!!
Quick comment: I'm alive, I'm well, Corsica is sunny and the beach looks very tempting... ;-)
I'll be back at night...
Hi Guille, glad to hear you made it
Catch ya later
Lukeh is on his way home :(
Yaaaaaayy that guille make itvokay!
hi guille
you know Em made it onto the local news website.. well we all made it into the local paper last week (em even got the headline.. she's really famous now)
http://twitpic.com/2jyl5h
You know you've made it if you end up in the local paper
hahaha see'll be thrilled :)
There is a lot of photos to import.
I think there's about 1200+ and it's only 1.5 days worth!
i just had an awesome nap. now, to find a supermarket!
What happened to sleeping when you are dead?
ooh btw.. i had to create the spa account again.. it wasn't recognising it.. i've created it with the details you said.
OK, cool
Was having WiFi issues that evening, makes sense that it didn'y work
Am watching pre-qualifying then am moving onto pre-race coverage on the iPlayer
oh pre-qualifying.... those were the days
:)
ahh that's my plan for tomorrow. :)
I need something to do whilst I import the hundreds of pics. I think I am multi tasking too much and it's being very slow
ahhh yes i need to import my pics too.. but am customising the Sidepodspa account first.
these photos you're importing are these just yours or the others too?
Okay, own up. Who planned back to back meetings this afternoon please? Not a fan.
Three-star Emily!
Not me... I don't have any this afternoon thank goodness. I had back to back meetings from 8:30 to 11:30 this morning though :(
:)
Silly idea.
Everyone's from Fri except yours I think plus a lot from Saturday
ahhhh blimey that is alot. have fun! ;)
I think everyone needs to pick their 10-15 favourites and upload to Flickr themselves. I might post a few others with permission after that
I really don't think we'll be going to Korea this year: adamcooperf1.com/…korean-gp-happen/
i need to go through mine. we should discuss on the wave, but i'm thinking albums for each day :)
Hey guys. Just landed into Copenhagen and i'm waiting for my bag. Then it's a very short train and walk home. Should be home in less than an hour :-)
I was chatting to @F1Photos about that
He reckons heir could be a closed race at Magny Cour, Paul Ricard or the Portuguese test track if Korea doesn't go ahead
I imagine we can put picks on he wave for discussion but remove them straight after to save the poor netbooks who may be accessing
I have to go to Maplin later. Mr C's favourite shop. Cable heaven.
Cool
Maplin is fab, I love it there too
Maplin? does it sell maps?
sounds like a great idea.
Electronic accessories
If by maps you mean GPS, yes, yes it does.
right, great. :)
:D
#nothere
Amy, Wolf, just in case you haven't seen the email, Kangaroo TV has just confirmed they will be at Monza.
booked it a few weeks back :D
how did you know?? :P
they sent me an email and they tweeted about it too :D
i got the email just today. boo. :P
I just tried to buy some cables but couldnt find what I needed. Silly Germany.
Now two people in my room keep talking to me and I dont want to talk back. Seriously considering booking a hotel and cancelling my hostel booking for Rome :D
I'm off to Maplin, what do you need? :)
Have arrived home *hugs Chrome*. All unpacked, cup of tea and relax :).
A week ago I was being "forced" to drink shots of sambuca #blamebassano ;)
You could ask them to join in the comments to communicate?
I need a power board to convert 1 euro plug into 4 so I dont have to sit behind a door to charge things :D
I'll keep an eye out!
Ooohh, iTunes has just finished downloading. F1 Minute!!! Yay
Hello everyone. In London paddington at the mo straining mcdonalds wifi and getting some om nom
Do Kathi, Emma, Pamela, Chris, and Pat have flickr?
you have only just got to Paddington? you didn't get the fast train though?..
Forced?
I rather think NOT :)
it left when I went through barrier, ironically I wasn't fast enough for the fast train
I don't. Don't have many pics though, so it's not really a problem...
hehe okay, any nice piccys you have or want uploading you can email me with, :)
Will do.
I'm glad McDonalds' small salt comes with chips on top...!
:D hehe.. it was only an extra half an hour wait.. it would have been quicker than the slow train ;)
i thought you didnt like chips?!
you guys confuse me sometimes.
I don't but I needed to get food to fill me up on the way home. Am tolerating these so I'm nice and full :) #weird
Although the BBQ sauce here makes then edible tbh, just absurdly salty
german kfc gave me mayo with my chips. What on earth Germany, you are not Belgium!
?! that makes sense.. lol
:D
All this talk of sauce is making me crave a Curry Wurst :(
ewwwwwww
Mayo on fries is wrong no matter what country you're in. Even Belgium.
now i am having grapes for dinner. mmmmm......fruit.
there is sooo much of it round here.
FRUIT!!!! omg i had so much fruit last night, om nom nom i had missed fruit..
I kind of want to cook something so i can have some meat without it coming with a side of chips but Im not sure this place has a kitchen.
I don't
awww i had tofu last night *hearts vegi food*
evenings in europe kind of drag without the spa crew :( #lonely
Good evening.
It is nice to have a big commenting screen on your own computer, with stable internet access.. although it isn't the same as only having a tiny mobile on 3G or a netbook that won't connect to the local wifi but actually being in the room with fellow SPCers...
I do but I haven't used in years because I switched to Picasa
awwww! miss you Amy!
:( must be really hard
Need to check the sidepodmap against your routeplan to see if anyone is nearby
Well this sucks. :( stupid trains and their stupid tickets
Also wasn't Rubens last f1 win in monza?
I need Pamela and her cutlery. I have some yoghurt to eat and no spoon *cry*
I am waiting for an hour or so then I am going to go for a walk just so I have something to do :D At least I am very central here, I cant get far without seeing something good.
No doubt you guys have already commented on the idea that Spa may alternate with Nurburgring....
I know which one I'd go to....
That's good.
Memory from Tuesday's Sidepodpubbing.
Mr C: and this is Emily, do you know her?
TM: are you @belugabeluga?
(rather stunned Emily): yes!
Mr C: well, clearly I am no longer needed here!
Honestly some journos are the end...
Well before the weekend Kimi mentioned that Seb was really the only current driver he is in contact with as they play badminton together... he also said that Seb was a nice guy...
This is now being construed as jumping to Vettel's defence.... when it was all said a long time before this weekend's debacle...
I accept he'd probably still say the same thing but I sooo dislike it when the press effectively twist someone's words to get a story....
The take home thing from the weekend regarding Vettel for me was that he's trying to be Kimi... but not getting the hang of it.
Martin Brundle: "How's the car looking?"
Sebastian Vettel: "It's blue with four black wheels."
The answer didn't quite fit the question and it was snapped back rather than delivered with Kimi's cutting sarcasm. It seemed so out of character for Vettel who's usually quite jokey.
Overly defensive and feeling the pressure.
hopefully talking to joe later this evening, any questions, just drop 'em here: sidepodcast.wikia…Questions_for_Joe
he used that line pre-season, worked much better then.
Hai :D
I'm home sweet home.
right, 8pm, time to go exploring germany by dark.
if kathi's around, i'm not going to be able to make tomorrow. apparently only managing 7 hours the whole of last week was a bit of a problem. there's being flexible and then there's just not bothering to turn up. #blamesidepodcast
if you're coming back through the uk in two weeks time though, yell now i'll make sure i'm free.
You are right it was a rather poor attempt at the sort of thing Kimi might say...
Kimi's comments sounded right for him in his devil may care way...
Labradors (like Vettel) who bounce around wanting everyone to like them, don't say such things so it will always sound wrong... even when the content is decent (this wasn't!)...
Thought he was more like a St Bernard!
drop.io/red_dog_r…/asset/vettel-jpg
I should be making dinner and unpacking but instead I am comment trawling. I haven't had stable comments since last Monday :)
*I am not trawling back to last Monday
Lightweight :)
I'm flying non-stop to Finland.
You two will just have to come to the rally next year ;)
We know you are really #sidepodaddiction
:) :)
I'll probably take a look at the race comments at some point.
wha! mind you.... super fast internet.
and FBFB. and the Indy one.
I do recommend the weekend's FBFB stuff, even if I say so myself. Some of our best work.
Nooo....
Blonde and bouncy...
St Bernards are lugubrious and steady...
and Giggles Radio and the daily's ;)
(hearts) fbfb.
I'll take a look soob
soon...
That sound more like Heikki - most of the interviews I have seen Vettel at this year he looks cross and very grumpy. St Bernards are incredible clumsy so he has that in common with them.
Good to see everybody is making it to where they are going.
Evening all
It looks like Sato and Danica have a new playmate for the next race. This is not going to help calm things down.
www.autosport.com…port.php/id/86294
A shame Kimi isn't in this year...
Just look at this hat...
Who dreamt that idea up?
Spa has been losing money I believe...
I'm too tired/lazy to do dinner so I'm thinking a takeaway. I love chips and sausages but I'm a little over-filled with it (apparently that's all they eat in Belgium?) so perhaps a Chinese.
The local chippy's Jumbo Sausage is calling me though, I'm wondering what the curry sauce is like..
:)
The surrounding towns must make bucket loads, I know the pubs I went to did ;)
Almost every circuit loses money on their GP. They can't take Spa off the calendar again. Bernie is after something else
You had that much fun?
There's a lot of talk about the noise still, a taxi driver had a really good conversation with us as he brought us back from our drink with champions :)
This is Spa's suggestion.. not Bernie's...
Oh yes!
I think I'm going to make a sub-set on Flickr entitled "Belgian Beers"
:D
Then I guess their contract is up for renewal and this is to let Bernie know they will not pay what he wants
The green one you twitpic'd looked vicious
Let's see how brave he is when Korea falls through
aren't they famous for being about the most alcoholic in the world?
It was mint, how can it be bad!
Also Cherry & Raspberry were both mighty
Nope
?They do drink a heck of a lot of beer though
I had a sip, it was lovely
Right guys, I need some advice.
Kebab, curry or Chinese?
They can be fairly strong.
Curry
sounds horrific
beyond horrific as to only exist in a parallel universe!
I guess in the run up to Korea we will have stories leaking of races in Russia, New York and Azerbaijan
Sushi...
8% on quite a few I bothered to check
Strong beer too. Leffe on the continent goes up to 12 which is about 16%!
Pass.
That's what I heard 13% or something like it!
silverstone got a discount and a long deal, why shouldn't spa?
I won't be impressed until you have tried this beer in a squirrel
www.asylum.com/20…er-inside-a-squi/
Talk about preserving wildlife!
They should. All the tracks should be able to make a profit out of their race
I dread to think what my iPhone will be like when i get it out of its case after a week at Greenbelt. It survived an hour and a half in the helicopter field with TV Catchup, but did need charging *every day*. Twice in one day one time.
I love festivals!!
Drinking is not impressive
but the packaging is! did you not find the video hilarious?
I didn't watch it
"Every now and then I fall apart, and i need you now tonight, and i need you more than ever, and if you only hold me tight, you'll be holding on forever."
Do not judge me.
I have had little sleep, lots of hugs, time with a lot of friends and i now have a hat. A nice big one. And chocolate.
And that is my SidepodConfession.
What's yours?
Oh man, i just re-read that back.
*hides in the corner crying*
Glad to see you enjoyed it. :)
The 3rd and last wash of the day is nearly done
I didn't even bring that many clothes!
here is a quote if you are not brave enough
"a brew that is 55 percent alcohol by volume and carries a $765 price tag. It's called The End of History.
Oh, and did we mention that the bottles come in stuffed animals-like stuffed animals that were once alive? The 12 bottles have been made featuring seven dead stoats (a kind of weasel), four squirrels and one rabbit. James Watt, one of the two guys behind BrewDog, put it better than we ever could: "The impact of The End of History is a perfect conceptual marriage between taxidermy, art and craft brewing." Just like we've all been waiting for!
For those interested in the actual beer, it's a blond Belgian ale with touches of nettles and juniper berries -- and in order to achieve the brain-blasting alcohol content, it had to be created using extreme freezing techniques."
Looks like Spa sharing with the Nurburgring is not a new idea
www.crash.net/f1/…_nurburgring.html
Bravery, yes. That'd be the reason
I drank plenty of Belgian beer cos it was tasty.
I'm not interested in novelty anti-freeze, thanks all the same
i walked in a straight line and ended up at the reichstag. its preeeetty.
why are there so many people in London? *hides in corner*
Its not really a bear since most beer yeast kills itself around the 5% mark with stronger strains (e.g. those used in Belgian trappist ales) maxing out at about 12%.
Are you being a tourist?
I am one of 4 passengers on this train.
RAVE!!!!!!
I think London has some kind of people gravity. It just pulls people in
they're all trying to find giggle's house.
i am touristing by dark. not joining that queue though!
:D
Just listen for the music....
Easier to stalk than daylight I s'pose
Should you not have touristed in the day when you could see stuff
Isn't that what Google Image Search is for?
The Virtual Tourist...
No, not at all, it stems back to Hockenheim wanting to pull out but they seem to be on a stronger footing now
To be honest, it seems like a recycle of the original story and with Hockenheim not looking like standing aside...
Personaaly, I prefer to do it in person
You find so many good pubs that way :)
With or without Squirrels?...
:)
Yes but there seems little point walking the streets in the dark while looking at pictures of what you can't see in front of you.
I'd quite happily drink with one, just don't fancy drinking out of one
will the german police tell me off if i cross against the red ampelmann? i notice no one seems to do it.
Ask yourself this: "What would Kathi say?"
I think you know the answer
by day i was looking at pandas. lots of the touristy things are lit up all pretty at night.
Tell them you are foreign and didn't know any better if they do. That works in most countries
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU CAN NOT DO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Told ya :)
:P
You went to the zoo to get a panda for Christine?
You'll still get a stern telling off
:D
I do love that there are ampelmann shops. No one else loves their traffic lights that much.
Kathi was great at reminding us how Pedestrian crossings work in Europe ;)
How about out of a penguin?
www.youtube.com/w…e=player_embedded
oh its actually produced in Scotland!
You were trying to kill people!!!
Think that means it is worth trying it and saying you are an ignorant foreigner
I hope you aren't flying Ryanair...
The excess baggage will be massive...
Not if you do it right
i also found cake mix that was kathi brand. you wont convince me now that our kathi wasnt named after cake.
I can't help it. I'm Scottish. Walk first, look later.
The police stopped me once for crossing on my bike against the direction of traffic. We take traffic laws very very serious
Pat was, I should add :)
Oh, Jackie's been reviewing books and keeping quiet about it:

Senna Memorial
i finally worked out which way to look to make sure i am not about to get ran over. europe conquered!
Not much traffic?....
(Only kidding)...
Sounds more like American traffic laws
they'd shoot first :-P
I had no idea there was a Senna monument at Spa. Thanks
If you ever drive in a Scottish city, you need to be well aware that the people will just step out into the street. The key is to walk out without letting any of the cars know you've seen them. Otherwise they'll try and play chicken with you. I would try to keep a subtle eye out for total lunatic drivers though....
Just wait till you get back to Australia and have to reverse it again.
Big thanks to Emma for bringing Stormy

Darth Watching at Spa
Was he the cause of the red flag?
I think so :)
:D
Are you in central London? Picadilly at 6pm is a lot of people.
Reminds me of when I visited Germany and was told by our hosts that you could buy s-bahn tickets while in transit. You can in Hamburg you cannot in Dusseldorf so the ticket inspector shouted at me in German with threats of going to prison. I answered back in Afrikaans so he thought I was Dutchmen. His response was what do you expect from a #$%^& Dutchman so I got off just buying the ticket from him!
Its not that bad in America but in Germany they will certainly shout at you!
I can't help it if places don't mark their crossings properly :)
Travelling in Germany is hillarious. Once I was on a train and sadly a man on the train had a heart attack and died. The train was waiting in the next station for the attendance of medical staff. Some of the passengers basically tried to pick the man up and throw him onto the platform because he was causing the train to be delayed. I've never seen anything like it....
the inspectors in trains are crazy. They kick children off the train in the middle of nowhere.
Now don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't consider that 'hilarious'
It sounds like a sitcom...
John Cleese anyone?...
You could consider that "Black Forest Humour"?
if they don't have a valid ticket
Unbelievable
There are jobsworths everywhere unfortunately but that is shocking
Exactly
I should say the guard managed to talk them out of it. But they were fully prepared to go for it. I just can't imagine thinking the train running to timetable could ever be that important...
I think everyone guessed that. I am sure no-one thought that children were just randomly thrown off trains.
Not a German form of the Lottery then?....
That was my impression. Generally I hugely enjoyed the younger folk, but some older German seemed cantankerous. They were still the exceptions and most people were quite polite.
In USA when using buses you often have to have the exact change which is problem when you do not know the tariffs or systems. The first time I got caught it was a black bus driver and I said I was from Kenya, he not only did not charge me but after his shift took me around San Francisco on an eveing tour that most white folks will never have seen.
It's very easy to not have a valid ticket since they change the system so often so it's almost the same.
Bet he got in trouble for taking the bus out for a private tour :D
Everyone was nice in Trier when I was there for the rally the other week...
Noticeably the younger peeps spoke pretty good English but the older fraternity ... didn't...
That seems to be a disease in so many things. Change for no good reason.
He did not use the Bus - I went back to his home and he used his rather old Buick - I think I met more folk that evening than the rest of my four months in the USA. Other than US customs and airport security (being Kenyan) which was anal everyone was very very nice.
I was shouted at by an old German lady for about 10 minutes when I cleaned up a spillage in my car, put the tissue into a bag and tried to throw it in a general waste bin at the exit of a campsite. I wouldn't be surprised if she was still shouting about it. I've never seen anyone so animated about recycling.
In London (and Vigo) they have a single fare no matter where you want to go so you don't have to worry about it.
Did we know you are from Kenya? We were talking over the weekend about having reprentatives from almost every continent on Sidepodcast, and the list from Africa was quite short so it is good to add another name (even if you are elsewhere now). Just Antarctica to go.
#hides
You forget the penguins...
:D
Germans take their re-cycling very seriously - and in office they work under rather dark conditions rather than waste energy by switching lights on. You do not leave a light on in a German Office when you leave! I spent a year in Germany and got to really like their efficiency.
I recycle! But this was gross and sodden tissue is not recyclable here at any rate. It was literally one tissue soaked in fruit juice.
Kenyan living in South Africa - Industrial Ecologist but also do graphic design and web pages.
I love Germany. As a cyclist particularly. I've always found any supposed cycle routes to actually exist, be well maintained and well signposted with good accurate maps available. I could happily live there a happy bee. I'm not sure Nick would be a great fan of the move to Germany concept though....
I constantly turned the lights of in our mobile home, when I wasn't fishing empty bottle from the bin and berating Bassano about his driving or telling people off for leaving their shoes on. I'm surprised the others didn't leaave me in Belgium ..
Cool!
Would love to move to Germany - Finland hold a lot of fascination - especially the heavy metal scene and the natural scenery. I am trying to get time and funds to go to the Faroe Islands.
We would make quite a pair as that sounds like me - I blame it by being brought up by my German Grandmother.
You had sweets with Vodka inside :)
And the Black Death, which was an awesome beer chaser!
Another sidepodwedding?
Another?
My iPhone pics are more fun. I have a lot of pics of catch fences on my SLR
Good job we had directions
http://twitpic.com/2k19tm
They had recycling there? We kind of lumped all our rubbish in one bag.
:O :O :O
Uh-oh....
Christine and Mr C
Lou and Lukeh at Williams
It didn't help that we didn't have a bin for the first few days and then it appeared outside our door - in the rain
I want to know why Mr C didn't just go in the Renault simulator??
This dude was trying to steal an embedded camera
http://twitpic.com/2k1bcq
what renault simulator?
Exactly. If we'd brought the bin indoors it would have made the place messy, if we had left it outside and put rubbish in it, the wind would've knocked it over and blown it all over..
Can't beat him for trying.
Did he get it in the end?
At your amazing Renault day out? I'm sure there was mention of there being simulator action available. Maybe I imagined it...
We left him to it, it was pretty well secured by a lot of sealant
The officials were watching him as well as the previous camera a few feet away
I didn't like his chances
They would never have been allowed to put it on th boat
ooh, not the same thing. i want to go in a multi-axis simulator: sidepodcast.com/2…with-mark-webber/
renault had a tub with a screen perched on top of it.
he he - I did all the interior design of our new offices and in places they have laminate floors (computer lab) so I got all the wheels changed on the chairs for rubber ones so they will not scratch the floors. My students change their normal shoes for soft ones and I did not even have to tell them! Our lights are all automatic so you walk in and they come on so cannot control that! Oh yes and we have recycling including composting!
Legard vs Crofty from Lou_uk

The campsite restaurant had a funny idea as to what salad was.
http://twitpic.com/2k1chn
hehe. my argument is, we don't have kids, so our carbon footprint is tiny compared to most peoples. there should be points / money awarded to people with no children for all the good they do to the world.
You guys are trying to make electrons extinct!
I bet you your life style still would require four worlds to support. I drive a smart car, have no intention of having children, am mostly vegetarian, live in a block of flats on a former mine and still used 5 times more resources than the average person in India!
I think it's harsh to compare them so directly. You always need more direct description on a radio commentary as there's no other information available.
That would be some achievement. You would get a Nobel prize for that except you wouldn't exist and neither would it
You can watch the video and listen to Crofty
He did get much more animated towards the end but tbh it was a bit melodrama at that particular point I think. At the start, he was talking a lot more but, as I said, you need to get more in.
Amy, did you find Knut the Polar Bear?
there were 3 polar bears, i assume one was knut :D
If Legard was on Kangaroo TV, I would not have paid money to use it
What!...
You didn't get his autograph?...
People of Sidepodland with cameras: set the date, it can be very handy! :)
Good evening from the sunny beaches of western Corsica... ;-)
the panda was better. Today I did learn though that Giant Pandas are actually quite small.
¡Hola Guille!
mine is still set to melbourne time. But I didn't give you my photos anyway :D
I noticed that on your iPad that they were out of order!
Meanie
Hola!
I bet you wish it was raining just like Belgium ;)
Hey - you made it! Are you dry yet? How was the train?
mine asked me the first time I turned it on :-)
Hi Guille
How small?
ooohhhh yeaaaahhhhh... :P
actually it took the whole day of yesterday to get all my things dry. even the external hard drive had condensation on it!
up to 150 KG not that small and they can eat 84 KG of bamboo shoots a day!
At birth they are tiny!
the train ran flawlessly this time. I had one hour in Brussels to have dinner and by midnight I was in Paris
definitely not what I'd call giant. And the one Berlin has is 32 years old so I doubt he's still growing.
You should know this...
You've seen Christine's....
I am now home, phew
Hi Guille
Yay! Glad you finally made it :)
Good to hear :)
I think everyone is nearly where they are supposed to be
Hi guille and lukeh
hoooray almost everyone is where they belong!
Trains can be sooooooooo annoying
I finally remembered to do something about food, so I ordered Chinese after all. The sausage was calling but my stomach needs something rice-based.
Hullo sir, any news of Van der Vaart? Big signing is big if it happens.
I wimped out of my first attempt at a proper meal because the german menu scared me. I shall try again tomorrow :D
Did you consider a phrase book?
Lewis was playing the new F1 game at Spa!
www.facebook.com/…fbid=466117946412
Sooooooooo jealous.
wurst mit kartoffel, or pizza, or pasta... that's all I can remember :P
i know enough from my school days to say 'i dont speak german' and 'can you say it in english' but i'm nervous about actually trying it out. i'll get over that quickly though :D
Pepperoni pizza is yummy!
Most places probably have a copy of the menu in English stashed away if you ask for it.
Processing this many pics is convincing me to go for an iMac upgrade pretty soon
8GB or more of RAM is definitely sounding good right now
Just ask in English - that's what Mrs Goat does when her German runs out.
i assumed so. i was at the zoo too which is apparently one of the most visited in the world so they should cater for their tourists. although i think everyone else there was german, they all looked like vettel :D
thats what i did at the supermarket. i feel ignorant though!
As long as you try, people don't seem to mind I guess...
there is no way I'll be able to process my pictures before I get back home. 20Gb worth of images is no task for my netbook...
I have started. Sauber's livery is rubbish on photos!
Sadly, the iPad doesn't save the metadata for the imported pics :(
You have the comments to recommend stuff
i feel like i have to have schnitzel before i leave.
Look at the number of countries you are visiting. You can't learn the language for all of them
Wiener schnitzel is nice. You really won't have any trouble getting things translated for you in a place like Berlin.
ooh google tells me some of the best schnitzel is nearby. staying in the centre is handy. that big tv tower thing is at the end of this street so when i get lost i just look up at the sky then walk towards it.
Get it as far south (in Germany) as possible.
looks like ill have to make another trip :D
i hate that i dont have a tv, nole is struggling in his first round match, its in the 5th set! now that'd be an upset.
speaking of tennis, heikki watches it.

Is there not a Sports Bar?
there is probably one somewhere, the one just down the road wasnt playing tennis when i walked past 40 minutes ago. and i am in my pjs now and in bed so im following live scoring instead :D
I know shes on a plane but PAMELAAAA I FOUND SOMEWHERE BELGIAN FOR US TO GOOOOOO
www.belgianbeerca…rne.com/menus.htm
Do they turn the sprinklers on every 30 minutes to make it more authentic?
i have no idea what that means?
Hii all
I hope not. They have cherry beer though! No raspberry by the looks of it :(
Using them up at a fast rate of knots
[well, trying to, anyhow]
;)
Hullo
Oh wow you have to go there
guten tag
hello
we know now that the headping works even for people that has never heard of the comments (Bob...). I wouldn't be surprised if she gets the message... ;-)
It's guten abend now
Now I wanna go
I didn't try most of those beers
hi lou
hello
its daytime somewhere in the world :D
...still none the wiser. surely we're using less of stuff than most people?
we don't buy magazines, don't buy any dvd's or cd's or anything really requiring packaging other than food and drink.
:D
someone say something?
...
...
hi lou ;)
It's ok, the joke wasn't that funny back then anyway ;)
Hi Lou
This is true
It was demonstrated several times
Even threatening to headping brought forth positive results
I just bought loads of all three at Heathrow airport :P
ace, i feel better about not recycling already ;)
If you go to southern Germany you should try the Spätzle - a sort of German pasta - highly recommended. You can also try German dumplings called Klöße.
Did you get all the smellies you were after in Boots?
very true
Shh!
Kathi will hear you
#Classified
So... when's the Sidepodtrip to the Antipodes?
Yeah I did - airside. It was some medicines for my mate's new baby. I also got the smellies for Mrs. Goat who was quite happy...
but that was my point. she should be cool with us, our effect on the planet is tiny compared to most people.
I need to acheive the plans I have first
Malaysia has now popped onto the radar
Holiday first, GPs after
You haven't met Kathi yet & it shows ;)
The effect is cumulative. If you two don't do it then it doesn't really matter, if all the people without kids didn't do it then that's a lot of stuff in landfill that doesn't need to be there.
Not saying I'm perfect, particularly when the civic authorities don't help.
amy said to me at the airport that should couldn't figure out why we didn't put a pound aside everyday so we could afford to go to spa. i said "it isn't only about the money". :)
surely the benchmark is other people. so if everyone was given a rating (like on fridges), ours must be a better rating than someone with a big family, right? so the goal is just to get a better rating comparatively, if your rating is above the national average, where's the issue?
I thought the goal was reducing the resources we all use
yea but I can understand Kathi so easily having lived in Germany and being brought up in a more German than English environment (although English was the language spoken). Although where I stayed in Germany there were baths everyone always used the shower in the baths as being more resource efficient. It actually hurts or feels unnatural not to sort stuff out for recycling, to switch the monitor off and lights off when not in use in each room.
ultimately yes. but surely the worst offenders have to do more. so if you fly a lot you should have to recycle more to make up the deficit. if you spend all day behind a desk and rarely leave the house, you should be in credit.
I don't agree. Being more eco friendly than the average Joe wouldn't get us very far.
I'm just as guilty as the next person though
We could all do more, I am certain
I don't see why there has to be a benchmark, if you have a rating you have to have people peering over spectacles inspecting your stuff and whole departments of people in every council. Just put the tins in that box and the plastics in that box and get on with your day. The hardest part is remembering which day they come and grumbling that they don't come every week.
i can't fathom that at all, personally. in this country they're phasing out bright/useful/useable light bulbs with ones that are useless. so i'm stockpiling the good ones. i'd rather not exist that sit in the dark thinking i was doing some good. but maybe that's just me.
yes there is always something more you could do like more lift clubs etc. I drive a smart Fortwo cabriolet cos it is small and I feel less guilty, but actually if I was less selfish I would always drive with a normal car full of passengers - but actually that does not suit my life style and need for independence.
does that make a jot of difference? how do you know your carefully separated tins aren't going to landfill anyhow. they have to send a second truck around to pick up the tins over the normal rubbish. are your efforts offset by the second truck?
it all seems a pointless to me.
I cycle everywhere.
I agree about the lightbulbs. THe energy efficient bulbs will be banned soon because apart from not being bright and giving people headaches they can't be recycled because of the materials used in them.
A lot of environmentally friendly stuff is anything but
Some places have reduced normal waste collection to every other week
I don't agree with it but in my block we have less general waste than we did 5 years ago
when the good one runs out, i'm gonna have to get a second fitting installed in every room to make up the difference. it's a bit daft.
We will all be using LEDs in 5 years anyway so the change to energy effificient bulbs is pointless.
It's like all the old car trade in schemes around the world to boost the economy. Perfectly good cars were destroyed and replaced with new cars. The environmental impact is huge. There are loads of perfectly serviceable cars around but still the 'environmentally concious' buy new small cars. What is more environmentally friendly - running an older, bigger car that produces more CO2 than a shiny new small one or having the new car built from scratch?
I've seen stuff that is not on the market yet that backs this up...
You need to look at the total product life span - the CFL also have mercury so safe disposal is problematic. LED light is coming on with service life 5 times that of CFL and have no hazardous stuff to dispose so are recycleable, but the lighting is somewhat harsh not suitable for all workplace situations.
*cries* i've been having one of those 'i miss everyone and don't want to go to uni' evenings..
infact non sidepodspa evenings are rubbish.
Well, those cars were already built and sitting in a parking lot. It should have taught car manufacturers to reduce their holding stock
The improvement in mpg shoyld have some benefits, however small
You'll be more certain to do it again though
This can happen, sort your photos out or something
true, but the fact i got a letter from my uni saying the last day i can move in is next Sunday.... gosh that's scary!! (plus the day of a GP... will have to move in earlier... like NEXT WEEK!) it kinda crept up on me :(
tis my plan for tomorrow :)
No idea. I do think it is better to reuse materials where viable. We already ship certain rubbish to China. Can't remember what it is now.
In this country we are running out of landfill space so it would be good to cut back on what goes into it. Not saying you should separate every last bottle or every scrap of food.
The automobile industry is interesting since you can argue that an old car are in some way more environmental friendly for it to run until it cannot therefore offset the need to manufacture a new unit. Actually cars are hugely recycleable so combining a long life span with good fuel efficiency is virtually the greenest way to go.
oohh.. where did the search function go on ye not so olde comments?!
Using them up at a fast rate of knots
...still none the wiser. surely we're using less of stuff than most people?
we don't buy magazines, don't buy any dvd's or cd's or anything really requiring packaging other than food and drink. {Comment #609}
Most people use a balance of protons and neutrons. Electricity requires a lot of electrons. Luckily electrons aren't destroyed in the process of use, they simply whizz round circuits...
You're gonna have such a blast!
Uni rocked. Set me up for life!
erm.. course
*is the most nervous she has been about anything*
*doesn't want to go*
nooooooo :(
It was a joke!
I'm pretty sure we've all got the post-holiday 'hangover'. Combined with pre-uni nerves I'm sure it is a bit strong.
to change now, maybe yes. But I've been using energy efficient bulbs for the last three years (the SAME bulbs), so I've already have offset the energy put into their fabrication...
There are two European directives that ban various things in electrical and electronic equipment including lead in solders. This despite the fact that there is not a shred of evidence linking lead from solder to leaching out of landfill or any other negative effect.
THe result of this is all the new solders have to be reflowed at 30-40C higher than conventional leaded solders. All the materials in contact with the solder had to be re-engineered to cope with the temperature.
The lead has been replaced mainly with tin and/or silver. Tin comes from alluvial deposits. Amongst the things done to extract tin are dreging a coral reef and blasting away chunks of Brazilian rain forest floor to extract the tin.
Silver is even better. The normal source of silver is its ore which is co-deposited with lead ore. So they still have to mine the lead ore and extract the silver and put the lead ore immediately to landfill.
You would not believe the amount of bull I have read about how environmentally friendly the new solders are.
Did you get any Belgian Beer at the terminal Pat?
That'd offset it a little ;)
100% agreed.
What about your catching up eith Emily and Naomi?
I wonder if we are using a lot less silver since Kodak saw it's business model go down the pan?
yeah we all ended up getting really emotional that i'm off to uni.. and they're both staying here.. (Nay's going to a local uni..)
Just remember that all first years are in the same boat. It's not like everyone else already knows each other & you're the only one that's new. You're a great person, you'll make good friends :)
Someone would have bought them eventually. Selling those meant more cars were built to replace perfectly good vehicles
Not when a new car had to be built to achieve it
I think the UK crushes all of its green glass and sends to Brazil for re-cycling into new green glass! I an not sure of the total environmental benefits. Reducing waste to landfill could be a huge benefit. So packaging that can be composted would be a good benefit. Others like bio-degradable plastic is horror if it gets mixed with plastic that is being re-cycled.
How did that happen? I remember when it was about ten weeks
ahh, yeah. have removed it cause it was making things a bit complicated and firefox was too
rubbishfirefoxy to properly filter hundreds of comments. it'll come back soon, but i figured it was essential.& don't forget that we'll all still be here too.
:)
#istilldoesntgetit
but...but.... the search function was awesome..
Just think of it like hosting sidepodpanel. Once you start it will be great. Think of all the toys they have
I didn't say it was a good one
aw thank you Janna, i'm just a person who hates change.. plus i'm sssooooo not ready i still have to buy pots and pans and things.. i may also need to buy a huuuuugggeeee Jenson poster..
Definitely
They can visit you
No one's ever ready
that is a good point.. plus i'm thinking the internet must be like... fast... right?.. so streaming video will be nice and easy..
In California the biggest source of lead pollution in the environment is the weights used to balance wheels! Lead is easily extractable therefore you can recycle. Tin and Nickel mining are really bad environmental hazards.
haha! except the thing being sidepodpanel didn't help me like.. learn how to survive alone and things :)
Uni internet should be superfast
i wasn't convinced anyone was using it, and wanted to bring new things in sooner (it was about 100 lines of code that needed revisiting). sorry. i've gone back to using browser search, am i missing something that it did better?
Are you staying in halls for your first year?
They should have stuff in the communal kitchen
I got a box of Hoegaarden and a 'gift box' of Chimay (two bottles with a glass). I was hanging around waiting for you guys but had to grab and run to the car after a while, I think that's what delayed us because there was a heck of a queue between shop and passport control.
I was really disappointed because there wasn't a huge selection of Belgian - I was hoping to pick up a random choice of bottles we hadn't tried but they didn't have many. I ought to have done it in the petrol station the other day. There were a LOT of British ales, some Guinness (normal not special stuff, and not that much price diff to UK as I recall), or cheap stubbies of local lager (which is quite nice, had some when Dad brought it back).
Carrefour or the Tesco Wine place may have been better options had there been time.
The 'big thing' seemed to be to buy 6 crates of wine for the price of 3, which I would have done had there been room in the car.
You will be fine. All the others are going to be lost but any time you are lonely you will have us
We'll just have to go to Belgium sooner rather than later then
other than the fact that i have no idea what browser search is... erm.. :)
You buy those once you move in. Like, on the day.
I couldn't believe it when I started reading up on it. It was like every day I would discover yet another horror story. But the EU, China and California amongst others have laws in place along the same lines
Google
ctrl+f i would guess.
yep
we have to bring our own though. Nay is gonna help me move in next week i think, then i'll come back home for the weekend and then stay up there first over freshers.. but that way it's all ready for me :)
How does that search the archives?
hehe. i'm talking about finding a comment on a page.
am gonna need serious positive vibes after this huge change :D.. but i think it helps i went to Spa.. cause now i have something to aim for. :)
it doesn't? am guessing you haven't even noticed which thing is missing...
commenter points for lou!
That's a filter and that's still there
#Confused
they will have a huge Jenson poster?..
But it was something you didn't think you could do and it worked out really well. This is just like the countdown to your exams. You just have to find a way to think positively about it. Every time you are in a situation where you are nervous about something new think of the other times you felt the same and it worked out OK.
woah! i had no idea! awesome! :)
yes... if your whole world revolves around doohickey it is ;)
DD never had it, I rarely used it on the main site
Case in point
It does
to me, that's easier than scrolling up to find the filter. but that might just be me.
damn you!!
:)
Goodnight!
Ctrl [or cmd] F is superb
see ya chap.
G'night Mr Goat
At least they don't speak foreign at uni
Yes. And hopefully the list of supermarkets on the satnav will be updated not to include the derelict ones.
It's going to be totally fine! Wear something with F1 on it and you'll get people talking to you straight away!
Apart from the exchange or overseas students
yeah it is easier.. cause you still get the whole conversation, many a time i've searched for something and had to remember the comment number in order to then go back and read the conversation.. i had no idea there was such a thing as a browser search.
Night
International students might ;)
Night Gavin
Hello lurker! ;)
ooh, bassano, can we share your... karaoke singing?
that's a good way of looking at it. I may also spend more time blogging if i feel lonely alot..
Only problem with Uni internet is that it can be heavily restricted, no torrenting, file sharing, websites considered to be 'naughty' or anything the Uni don't like. Plus everyone uses up the Megavideo allowance as soon as they wake up! :(
What!!!!
you... sent us a podcast... or at least tried to.
Hii Emma! Ah good idea! Find the F1 fans asap! :)
What song is it?
This we have to hear
The problem is that people have not fully understood the materials their using, where they come from, how they can be dismantled and then re-used.
Sorry but the Toyota Prius is anything but green - certainly most normal cars like a Ford Focus or a Nissan Micra are way greener if examined through a life cycle analysis.
A can of coke purchased in the UK is one of the most insane products when you look at where all the material is being sourced - I must try and find the analysis.
...?
There are lots of things you can do but remember everyone else feels the same even if they act like they don't
I am drunk... I think Alison has gone to sleep?
i don't wanna say, if we're allowed to share it? it's about 30 seconds.
Good point, plus lou's uni is actually quite a good uni, ours was basically anything goes because noone could be bothered to maintain it and keep an eye on downloads and bandwidth
Of me singing
I need to know more first
i take that as a yes..
Someone hasn't read last night's comments.
everybody and everything needs a rating, i swear.
i assumed you just sent the wrong file? we were expecting a group chat.
Go on then
*hides*
the only things i need to know..
-will i be able to live stream F1? - will i be able to download podcasts and things from itunes?
w00t!
Nope, I was having curry and then sleeping
Is this video or audio? If it is video of the club, I'm not on it am i?
People don't seem to understand energy conversion or that the CO2 figure should include the power station that is generating the electricity they use should be added in
I sent a chat, didn't I?
Two files via email to Christine
ALISON!!!!!!!!!!!
nope.
oh, don't know. not to me.
Do they do any form of engineering at your Uni? That's where they will all be. Plus, see if they have a karting club, you could see if they need a photographer for their events and it would be lots of good practice maybe?
Check your outbox just in case
Don't wake her, Nick probably wants to know how to make Supernoodles :)
People don't seem to understand energy conversion or that the CO2 figure should include the power station that is generating the electricity they use should be added in {Comment #745}
Probably because we don't have those figures to do the adding-in with...
There is video too. We need to see it
I live in dubai, i could order gourmet Chinese, but i dont think its the same :P
Good idea on the karting phots
The dropbox links are definitely SidepodChat
:D :D
Many unis here you actually have to pay for your downloads. Fortunately my own you do not but it is restrictive so any sites that have malware, proxy diverting, file sharing (Rapidshare etc), Torrents, streaming (last fm) are all off limits. Some place will not even allow you-tube, myspace, and social network sites.
I think she is asleep, waking english girls rarely ends well! :P
Did I email and when?
It's not in Toyota's interest to publish them because it kills their sales pitch
no worries, she's probably got it on her list. do you remember emailing me a menu?
oohhhh what a perfect idea!! there is a motoring Journalism course, which can offer work experience at woking... am hoping i'll team up with some people there.. if there is an F1 fan..
Apparently you snet something yesterday night. That disco clip maybe?
Neither will calling her English
I remember that. We were hoping you could put it in the comments and then they could choose our beer, but you were watching a film and the comments were talking about something else like grid penalties
You will not be the only f1 fan at uni!
Oh dear, I found it

Damn! My Uni just used to stop the websites opening and would put up a scary message saying that your attempt had been logged and that they were watching you. I can remember when they first started trying to block secure websites, they blocked MSN, bank websites and their own finance website - smoooooooth!
its the thought police!!!! run!!!
That was posting fail. it's been a long day
enjoy: sidepodcast.poste…ing-an-f1-podcast
Yes, we were having twitpic issues
This looks promising
It's audio only but from the same place
Crazy dutch people
ah-ha.
Probably because we don't have those figures to do the adding-in with...
It's not in Toyota's interest to publish them because it kills their sales pitch {Comment #761}
Not to mention it's not in the interests of anyone else who produces power at this point to give accurate figures because none of the power production methods are quite as green as claimed (the inaccuracies are pretty much matters of degree).
Otherwise the "conventional" rivals to Toyota would already have published accordingly.
Yeah, we hacked that in 11 days...
Make friends with the geeks :D
you're doing a number on the next sidepodradio.
:D :D hehehehe!!!!
Ah, yeah :D :D
The singing, I don't mind
Admitting I know the words... embarrassing
The way Gordon Murray is conceptualizing the future automobile is truely liberating. It takes an ex F1 car to design to produce the world's first truly ecologically-inspired private transport - how paradoxical is that. smart did go some of the way with their factory design and distribution management.
hehehe, I got her wearing an england shirt
#donttellalison
#confidential
Genius.
My uni used to just ask people who wanted internet to order their own and make them responsible for their own downloads. That may have changed since I graduated due to them centralising much of the student accommodation.
"They love it!" :D
It's one of those songs everyone knows the words to.
we all love a bit of John Denver ;)
I was on an all male engineering degree, we were the geeks ;) The first few they put up were easy, but the final one was done by some external company that had put some proper effort into it :(
Not a good Scot...
You should've seent he dance floor, they were going wild!
Gordon Murray seems to be taking a long time to produce anything
WHAT?
She is in trouble for that
I actually emailed that to a lot of people but had forgotten
Nice one!
(She is english)
#confidential
If Guille is still around... this is awesome - guille2306.poster…ous.com/eau-rouge
Definitely not
That's one place less in my 'Places to visit' list:
guille2306.poster…ous.com/eau-rouge
Time for bed. See you!
they did!
Yay!!
Night Guille
wow that was scary! sorry for linking to it before you posted it!! love it though! :) hehe!
Awesome stuff.
night Guille
And catch ya later.
Night Guille
As did I, it seems :)
Night Geeshe :)
I love that he put a sign for Eau Rouge.
good pic
Good night
Authentication is the normal for Internet usage here (part of the government legislation) and yes banking sites are off limits - they also have a complete record of your Internet use if they have the time to check up. I fought and got it changed but even email services like Gmail were banned but our guys will listen to your requests provided they are well motivated. On the side of the universities if you download copyright material they can be fined and the fines are huge so the Unis have to be careful themselves.
Guille's pics were superb
I was so disappointed I couldn't import Lou's pics into the iPad
they were jaw droppingly good.
i wasn't.. they are no where near as amazing as Guille's
awesome camera or awesome cameraman? if it's the former, i'm getting one :)
All the conceptual plans are ought, but I think the idea that a manufactured would buy the plans off the shelf is being slow to finalise.
see www.gordonmurrayd…esign.com/t25.php
Both
I want a Guille too
Saw that a while ago, looks stoopid
But so does the GWiz and people buy that
:D
hehe both. Even i liked the Canon
Ditto.
He's very good and his camera looked the business (not that I can tell one from another, but you know, to layman eyes..).
:)
"Explore the possibility of 2 vehicles travelling and overtaking in one conventional lane."
He is barking if he thinks that is going to happen
His camera is super awesome but even staring at it felt expensive.
He was running everywhere and wasn't afraid to climb up anything to get a good shot. In some ways i think General Admission is so much better for photos than Grandstand seats... i'm also pleased i didn't take many photos on race day though..i just enjoyed the race :)
It might get accepted but I thought the same - the GWiz is stupid - I could go int all of that but its accident rating should have been enough to have made it extinct - sadly this did not happen.
i think smart did producing in way something reasonably attractive considering the proportions are so weird.
Agreed on all counts
grandstand is awful for pics. but necessary to keep camera's dry.
In Spa, nothing stays dry. Not even the sky about the rain stays dry. It rains up in Spa!!
You just need a showercap and a hairband ;) Or a sexy little weatherproof camera like mine!
ahahahahaha you'd need to be in a covered grandstand.. :D
Joke as it assumes everyone is driving his designs - what about transport/service vehicles - sure lots of bluesky thinking but the knock down flatpack and final assembly close to point of sale are innovative aspects.
That worked a treat
I'm gonna look so odd buying hairbands before my next trip :)
oh.
...
...
why sit in an uncovered grandstand?
it is impossible to stay dry.. Pamela sat in a bin bag all of Saturday to keep dry.. she managed it until we were walking home and within 2 seconds we were all soaked, it rains to quickly and heavy in Spa that you don't have time to make sure you're all covered up before it tips it down..
#blamebassano
At Spa
Where it rains all the time
WHy build an uncovered grandstand at Spa where it rains all the time?
eeheheheheh!! :D
The view was closer to Eau Rouge
also a good point.
*shrugs*
it was the best grandstand position wise on Eau Rouge though.. would have been nice if it had been covered but we dealt with the rain :)
problem with a grandstand is all you pics look the same after lap 4.
I looked at the covered stand opposite us
I think there were 4 seats smack bang in the middle of it that remained dry
Sideways rain
Absolutely. It is tempting to do it on more of a budget next year, the Kangaroo means you don't have to be near a big screen. Great vantage points all over the GA areas, from the map I expected a lot of them to be awful and they really weren't
Plus it was slightly more affordable ;)
Which is why we moved about for different sessions
Some of my Friday clothes were still damp when I took them out of the case this evening.
would you not do a different race next year? monza or something?
better view
*not that i'm encouraging planning, btw.
I dunno
On lap 5 i had different blurry pics to lap 6, and lap 7 i had wet blurry pics, then sunny blurry pics, then...
true, however Friday and Saturday mornings = roaming time :) i think if i went again i'd do much more roaming and be more bold with my photos.. most are boring pan shots, but the ones i have in focus make me happy... F1 cars move sooooooo quickly!
yes! true.
It would be nice to do another race elsewhere but planning is silly :)
Just like Scotland. I thought we had a patent on horizintal rain
i'd want to watch the race from a grandstand though i think...
Yeah, it never works ;)
I want to do melbourne!!!! it sounds awesome.
I have quite a lot of in focus photos of Yamamoto. His inability to go fast is good for something, yay!!
I could be tempted by the Nurburgring or Monza.
Spa was just that good though.
Only if they have a Beurb
do you think we could persuade bobbbb to come to a race with us?.. he could still charge us 5,50.. :)
They need rules to make them go slower so they are easy to photograph
Where do you fancy next?
Berb's still waiting for us to go to Spa town in his van
that must earn him some points?
Malaysia
i think it was partly the forest that i fell in love with... walking through it seeing the rising mist and just hearing the sound of engines was so so incredible..
Did anyone get a pic of his van?
Surely you get better photo ops during a race than practise/quali because you have cars running closer together and maybe trying overtakes
No, he doesn't deserve any for his inability to tell where the racing line is. Horrific driving at times.
I don't.. due to his stupidly dangerous and unpredictable lines through Pouhan.
#hetotallyshouldbebanned
And I mean really worrying. Lou and Gavin noticed it more than me but it was still noticeable.
I've just become a victim of how you guys spend so much time on this! I have done *nothing* since Kathi made me curious when I first sat down. Good to chat, but my bed is calling me. Niiight.
Welcome to the comments ;)
night emma.
ooh, i've done nothing since 10pm. must edit joe. come back soon emma!
He finished a lap down on all the new teams and even after Trulli had spun.
friendfeed.com/si…hehehe-bobbbbbbbb
yeah, but if i'm going as a fan i'm going to watch the race as a fan, with photos for all the other sessions... They'll be plenty of times to get race images when i'm an f1 photographer *i hope*
I hope you enjoyed your free time... ;) Night.
night Emma!! :)
Yeah, being up on Kemmel with the forest around you, plumes of mist rising from the trees in the distance (like this on Autosport but looking over at Stavelot or something) the Woopy Snack cabins just down the way, engines warming up... Magic.
Gotcha. :)
Night.
Goodnight. Well done to Kathi for creating another addict
You have a new Joe show?
:)
I just thought you would be photographing all the time
yup, i commented earlier. it's short one though, was a bit pushed for time i think. should have it up tomorrow.
I am no photographer but i really dislike that photo on the homepage of autosport of the red bull. It's like someone took their camera onto the magic roundabout and it's very disorientating!
Must have been before I arrived. I look forward to it
i spent most of Friday taking photos and i found it so hard to keep up with everything that was happening.. same with FP3. but watched Quali and the race from the grandstand and just enjoyed actually being at my first race and soaking up the atmosphere.I think i'd probably be different next time.
woah!! i love it!
Only from the inside I think
too blurry and wierd for me :(
He he
Night Emma. Staying away from all that paper, you hear! ;)
I gave up taking a camera with me to race meetings because I was a lousy photographer and I never knew what was happening in a race
i put friday down to the fact i had no kangaroo tv.. but saturday was better.. yet it was nice to be able to concentrate on the action.
right i'm off to sleep as i'm shattered. night all! xx
night lou!
night
Nighty night
Night Lou
Thanks for sorting the Flickr thing, I'll get some pics up there this week
Good night Lou
Its expressive - showing how Red Bull Racing despite having the fastest car is imploding on itself. No I do not like it much.
With that good night folks have to go to a sport science conference tomorrow.
And I have to go back to that godforbidden supermarket, so I'd better sleep too especially after all the train woes.
Night red dog, night everyone else
G'night Red Dog
Good night. Have fun at the conference
Bye people heading off to sleep
Night Lukeh
See ya Lukeh
ditto :)
Good Night to everyone who is off to sleep
hi everyone
just a short hello
hi Leigh
hi janna
hi
hi pat
Hey Leigh
hi bassano
nearly kudos to this guy
:)

who's on daily duty today, btw?
Gavin?
He's in bed
ahh, he may have forgotten.
So who is doing the Daily then?
well i could either do it in a bit, or i guess wait until gavin wakes up?
unless you're up for it?
Is Pat still here?
Not for long..
I think I will wait until I have something to report, actually......
this is a Danish/British collaboration and also looks like the most scary thing ever
www.bbc.co.uk/blo…re-no-dummi.shtml
This might be of interest to you (if you remember him). One of the old CART owners, Derrick Walker may finally be forming a new IndyCar team for either next year or 2012.
About time too, he's been on the sidelines for too long
He seemed to resign himself to Lights for ages - nice if he did come back
He was after the A1GP gig that Andretti got, in fact he might have had it beforehand.. not that it matters now.
I'm sleepy so this is an early night for me, yet more driving in the morning as I have to go to a meeting at the other site just as I did today. I want to have a break from driving now.
night pat
Much as I like the idea ofgoing into space this does not even slightly appeal to me
Night Pat
i'm going to sleep too - night all
Night Leigh
Night Leigh & Pat and everyone who remains, sleep now, comment with you all later.
Night Janna
Night to the folks leaving
We should have a roll call to see who is still around....
I may be asleep by the time it finishes :)
classic!
ok. hello jordan. anyone else?
and hello bassano
Hullo sir :)
Hi Jordan
Still here
hey steven. small crowd tonight :)
Sidepodspa mob are too tired to stay up late
outside = bad.
That's very true
Maplin's is outside
They have mail order
it has a roof?
Greetings, Bassano, me, and Steven....
Bassano, I have been thinking, would your recommend the 1977 movie The Deep as a movie worth watching for Mr. C ?
:)
Christine had to go there earlier
But you have to go outside to get there
It's been ages since I've seen it
I remember it being good, don't know how well it has held up to the test of time
Is that the one with Jacqueline Bisset?
It was on TV recently but I didn't watch it
Yes,. I have seen it but since the gal's name is also named "Jacqueline" I think I am more in the clear.....
true enough.
Steven Roy Is that the one with Jacqueline Bisset?
It was on TV recently but I didn't watch it
I was just thinking that since Christine is going after Nessie but does not to use a submarine this would be a decent film to show her what happens when a person goes underwater ==> Namely, their hair gets wet, unlike a submarine...
Yes
Loch Ness is kinda deep to scuba dive
Any Nessie sightings in the local copy, Steven ?
Haven't been any for a while
Details! But Christine does have few issues to work out for her Nessie-Hunting expedition, eh?
She is going to need a submarine and not a little baby one
Well, I guess you can not get a Lake Monster to jump straight into the air to touch a buoy or do backflips on command for a piece of fish, eh?
Submarines are way more #mfc than scuba
Maybe Christine will be able to find the Yellow Submarine that disappeared from Giggles's Sonar during his broadcast?
Hard to train an animal that is hard to find
Darn! Missed the first 14 minutes of a TV show called "The Real Jack the Ripper" looks like I am going to have to watch the 11:00 pm showing instead....
Morning guys.
EPIC link to start the day: the trailer for the Ayrton Senna movie!
www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=lY2Jr_7Ngyk
Wonder when the movie will be released
Clarkson said sometime in the autumn, no? Very excited, nonetheless. I hope it gets a wide release. Would love to watch that in the cinema.
If it is done properly the engine noise in a cinema should be great. I am not happy there is so much of his accident in the trailer though
Yuk. Looks like it is going to be a documentary on Senna. think I am going to give this movie a pass....
it is a bit startling so much of Imola 94 is in that trailer (both Senna and Barrichello's accidents). one hopes that there isn't so much of it in the actual movie.
what were you hoping for from the movie?
That it would never be made?
Night folks, sleep beckons
When you look at everything that happened in his life and career there is no reason for that accident to feature so much.
Good night Bassano
if done properly, a Senna movie would be good for the sport, I reckon. you never know with Hollywood, though.
night Bassano.
Just read now Adam C's Korea article. If it looks like it will be cancelled as it does now, I don't see how Korea can better its chances in the next 7 days.
And I wonder if there will indeed be a substitute race.
There have been rumours of Magny Cours and a few other places but who knows
From what I hear, Aragon has declined to be a substitute race. So we may end up with a French GP after all? I reckon Magny Cours and Paul Ricard are the top candidates.
Paul Ricard has no spectator facilities. Not even sure it has the right license any more.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was a closed (i.e. no spectator) race, given the short nature of it all. While that would be a minus point, it is owned by Bernie, so if he really wants to keep the same number of races this year, it's a quick and easy fix.
Bassano what were you hoping for from the movie?
That it would never be made?
Actually yes, I was hoping that it would never be mad. It is just a bad a decision as to make a movie about Michael Schumacher, honestly.
Night everyone. Jordan Broadcasting Service is signing off!
Night Jordan
Good night to anyone left around
morning!
Hangover
Where are you today?
(We should really have a map and plot you :) )
Ooh, we have the track layout for AUstin
It looks a little different, some elements of yas in there
www.statesman.com…ayout-890582.html
Erm good morning. Is it still Tuesday?
i am still in berlin, leave thusday night.
Readint though it seems like a lot of it is copied from other places!
Could be interesting if they did the Beckets part of the track on a steep decline
The Daily is so
GoodBad, its been left up there as an example! You know saying things like that is just volunteering yourself, right?
I can volenteer to headping gavin
GAAAAAAAAAAAAVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNN
My hero :)
It's okay, I've done it.
